Decimation and interpolation methods are utilized in image coding for low bit rate image coding. However, the decimation filter (prefilter) and the interpolation filter (postfilter) are irreversible with each other since the prefilter is a wide matrix (a matrix whose number of columns are larger than that of rows) and the postfilter is a tall one (a matrix whose number of rows are larger than that of columns). There will be some distortions in the reconstructed image even without any compression. The method of interpolation-dependent image downsampling (IDID) was used to tackle the problem of producing optimized downsampling images, which led to the optimized prefilter of a given postfilter. We propose integrating the IDID with time-domain lapped transforms (TDLTs) to improve image coding performance.

In our algorithm, the update rule of MP algorithm is employed to reduce the number of least square calculations and the refining strategy is introduced to further improve its performance. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the OMP algorithm with significantly lower complexity.

This paper investigates power allocation and outage performance for the MIMO full duplex relaying (MFDR) based on orthogonal space-time block Codes (OSTBC) in cognitive radio systems. OSTBC transmission is used as a simple way to obtain multi-antenna diversity gain. Cognitive MFDR systems offer the advantage not only of increasing spectral efficiency by spectrum sharing but also of extending the coverage through the use of relays. In cognitive MFDR systems, the primary user experiences interference from the secondary source and relay simultaneously due to the full duplexing. What is therefore needed is a way to optimize the transmission powers at the secondary source and relay. Therefore, we propose an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme based on minimizing the outage probability in cognitive MFDR systems. We then analyze the outage probability of the secondary user in the noise-limited and interference-limited environments under Nakagami-m fading channels. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve performance improvement in terms of outage probability.

The effect of transceiver impairments (consisting of frequency offset, phase noise and doubly-selective channel) is a key factor for determining performance of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system since the transceiver impairments trigger intercarrier interference (ICI). These impairments are well known and have been investigated separately in the past. However, these impairments usually arise concurrently and should be jointly considered from the perspectives of both receiver design and system evaluation. In this research, impact of these impairments on an OFDM system is jointly analyzed and the result degenerates to the special case where only a specific impairment is present. A mitigation method aided by segment-by-segment time-domain interpolation (STI) is then proposed following the analysis. STI is general, and its weights can be specified according to the interpolation method and system requirements. Computer simulation is used to validate the analysis and to compare the performance of the proposed method with those of other proposals.

An optical flip-flop circuit with a single semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) using two orthogonal polarization states is proposed. The optical set / reset input and output signals are at a single wavelength. The flip-flop circuit consists of an SOA, a polarization combiner, a polarization splitter, two directional couplers, and two phase shifters. No continuous light source is required to operate the circuit. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the operation performance. Polarization dependence in SOA is considered in the analysis at a single wavelength operation, and numerically simulated results are presented. We confirm that the flip-flop circuit with a feedback-loop length of 15~mm can be operated at switching time of around 3~ns by 1~ns set / reset pulses. The flip-flop performance is discussed from viewpoints of transient overshoot and contrast at the steady on-off states.

In this invited paper, software defined network (SDN)-based approaches for future cost-effective optical mobile backhaul (MBH) networks are discussed, focusing on key principles, throughput optimization and dynamic service provisioning as its use cases. We propose a novel physical-layer aware throughput optimization algorithm that confirms > 100Mb/s end-to-end per-cell throughputs with ≥2.5Gb/s optical links deployed at legacy cell sites. We also demonstrate the first optical line terminal (OLT)-side optical Nyquist filtering of legacy 10G on-off-keying (OOK) signals, enabling dynamic >10Gb/s Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiple Access (OFDMA) λ-overlays for MBH over passive optical network (PON) with 40-km transmission distances and 1:128 splitting ratios, without any ONU-side equipment upgrades. The software defined flexible optical access network architecture described in this paper is thus highly promising for future MBH networks.

In this paper, we consider decouple-and-forward (DCF) relaying, where the relay encodes and amplifies decoupled data using orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBCs), to achieve the maximum diversity gain of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying. Since the channel status of all antennas is generally unknown and time-varying for cooperation in multi-antenna multiple-relay systems, we investigate an opportunistic relaying scheme for DCF relaying to harness distributed antennas and minimize the cooperation overheads by not using the global channel state information (CSI). In addition, for realistic wireless channels which have spatial fading correlation due to closely-spaced antenna configurations and poor scattering environments, we analyze the exact and lower bound on the symbol error probability (SEP) of the opportunistic DCF relaying over spatially correlated MIMO Rayleigh fading channels. Numerical results show that, even in the presence of spatial fading correlation, the proposed opportunistic relaying scheme is efficient and achieves additional performance gain with low overhead.

In this letter, the orthogonal projection (OP) estimation of the direction of arrival (DOA) and direction of departure (DOD) of multiple targets for bistatic multiple-input multiple-output radars is addressed. First, a two-dimensional direction finding estimator based on OP technique with automatic pairing is developed. Second, this letter also presents a modified reduced-dimension estimator by utilizing the characteristic of Kronecker product, which only performs two one-dimensional angle estimates. Furthermore, the DOA and DOD pairing is given automatically. Finally, simulation results are presented to verify the efficiency of the proposed estimators.

With the distributed data mining technique having been widely used in a variety of fields, the privacy preserving issue of sensitive data has attracted more and more attention in recent years. Our major concern over privacy preserving in distributed data mining is the accuracy of the data mining results while privacy preserving is ensured. Corresponding to the horizontally partitioned data, this paper presents a new hybrid algorithm for privacy preserving distributed data mining. The main idea of the algorithm is to combine the method of random orthogonal matrix transformation with the proposed secure multi-party protocol of matrix product to achieve zero loss of accuracy in most data mining implementations.

Multiple access (MA) technology is of most importance for beyond long term evolution (LTE) system. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) utilizing power domain and advanced receiver has been considered as a candidate MA technology recently. In this paper, power assignment method, which plays a key role in performance of NOMA, is investigated. The power assignment on the basis of maximizing geometric mean user throughput requires exhaustive search and thus has an unacceptable computational complexity for practical systems. To solve this problem, a novel power assignment method is proposed by exploiting tree search and characteristic of serial interference cancellation (SIC) receiver. The proposed method achieves the same performance as the exhaustive search while greatly reduces the computational complexity. On the basis of the proposed power assignment method, the performance of NOMA is investigated by link-level and system-level simulations in order to provide insight into suitability of using NOMA for future MA. Simulation results verify effectiveness of the proposed power assignment method and show NOMA is a very promising MA technology for beyond LTE system.

Combining the strong anti-interference advantages of OFDM technology and the time-frequency analysis features of fractional Fourier transform (FFT), we apply OFDM as the coding modulation technology for digital watermarking. Based on the Arnold scrambling and OFDM coding, an innovative DFRFT digital watermarking algorithm is proposed. First, the watermark information is subjected to the Arnold scrambling encryption and OFDM coding transform. Then it is embedded into the FFT domain amplitude. The three parameters of scrambling iterations number, t, FFT order, p, and the watermark information embedded position, L, are used as keys, so that the algorithm has high safety. A simulation shows that the algorithm is highly robust against noise, filtering, compression, and other general attacks. The algorithm not only has strong security, but also makes a good balance between invisibility and robustness. But the possibility of using OFDM technique in robust image watermarking has drawn a very little attention.

Empirical simulations show that POMP outperforms the existing sparse signal recovery algorithms including OMP, compressive sampling matching pursuit (CoSaMP), and linear programming (LP) in terms of the exact recovery ratio (ERR) for the sparse pattern and the mean-squared error (MSE) between the estimated signal and the original signal.

Lattice-reduction (LR) technique has been adopted to improve the performance and reduce the complexity in MIMO data detection. This paper presents an improved quantization scheme for LR aided MIMO detection based on Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. For the LR aided detection, the quantization step applies the simple rounding operation, which often leads to the quantization errors. Meanwhile, these errors may result in the detection errors. Hence the purpose of the proposed detection is to further solve the problem of degrading the performance due to the quantization errors in the signal estimation. In this paper, the proposed quantization scheme decreases the quantization errors using a simple tree search with a threshold function. Through the analysis and the simulation results, we observe that the proposed detection can achieve the nearly optimal performance with very low complexity, and require a little additional complexity compared to the conventional LR-MMSE detection in the high Eb/N0 region. Furthermore, this quantization error reduction scheme is also efficient even for the high modulation order.

It is shown that the performance of PL receiver outperforms that of conventional maximal ratio combining receiver.

Orthogonal arrays have important applications in statistics and computer science, as well as in coding theory. In this letter, a new construction method of symmetric orthogonal arrays of strength t is proposed, which is a concatenation of two orthogonal partitions according to a latin square. As far as we know, this is a new construction of symmetric orthogonal arrays of strength t, where t is a given integer. Based on the different latin squares, we also study the enumeration problem of orthogonal partitions, and a lower bound on the count of orthogonal partitions is derived.

This paper presents a modified orthogonal fractal super-resolution (OFSR) method to improve the visual quality of an image along sharp edges. Although the OFSR method constructs a high-quality high-resolution image from a low-resolution counterpart, there are ringing artifacts observed along sharp edges which make the visual quality relatively low with respect to the numerical quantity. These artifacts are mainly caused by unnecessarily exaggerated pixel contrast along sharp edges within a range block. We restrict each contracted pixel value in a range block to a value between the minimum and maximum of its domain block pixel values. We also extend the domain block of the contraction function and find a better domain block using the range block mean. At the final step of the iteration, we adjust each pixel in the range block so that the range block mean and the corresponding pixel value of the low-resolution image are equal. According to our experimental results, the proposed method improves the visual quality along sharp edges and shows higher levels of numerical quantity than the OFSR method.

This letter presents an effective direction of arrival (DOA) estimator that is based on the orthogonal projection (OP) technique. When an OP matrix is attained, the proposed estimator, which dispenses with spatial smoothing (SS) preprocessing, can form the maximizing orthogonality for a single snapshot. Since this technique does not need to perform eigen-decomposition while maintaining better DOA estimates, it also has real-time DOA estimation capability. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the efficiency of this method.

Time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) has higher spectral efficiency than the standard cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) OFDM by replacing the random CP with the known training sequence (TS), which could be also used for synchronization and channel estimation. However, TDS-OFDM requires suffers from performance loss over fading channels due to the iterative interference cancellation has to be used to remove the mutual interferences between the TS and the useful data. To solve this problem, the novel TS based OFDM transmission scheme, referred to as the unified time-frequency OFDM (UTF-OFDM), is proposed in which the time-domain TS and the frequency-domain pilots are carefully designed to naturally avoid the interference from the TS to the data without any reconstruction. The proposed UTF-OFDM based flexible frame structure supports effective channel estimation and reliable channel equalization, while imposing a significantly lower complexity than the TDS-OFDM system at the cost of a slightly reduced spectral efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed UTF-OFDM substantially outperforms the existing TDS-OFDM, in terms of the system's achievable bit error rate.

Compensation for the nonlinear systems represented by polynomials involves polynomial inverse. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed that gives the baseband polynomial inverse with a limited order. The algorithm employs orthogonal basis that is predetermined from the distribution of input signal and finds the coefficients of the inverse polynomial to minimize the mean square error. Compared with the well established p-th order inverse method, the proposed method can suppress the distortions better including higher order distortions. It is also extended to obtain memory polynomial inverse through a feedback-configured structure. Both numerical simulations and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can provide good performance for compensating the nonlinear systems represented by baseband polynomials.
