  • Effect of Load-Balancing against Disaster Congestion with Actual Subscriber Extension Telephone Numbers

    We demonstrated that load balancing using actual subscriber extension numbers was practical and effective against traffic congestion after a disaster based on actual data. We investigated the ratios of the same subscriber extension numbers in each prefecture and found that most of them were located almost evenly all over the country without being concentrated in a particular area. The ratio of every number except for the fourth-last digit in the last group of four numbers in a telephone number was used almost equally and located almost evenly all over the country. Tolerance against overload in the last, second-, and third-last single digits stays close to that in the ideal situation if we assume that each session initiation protocol server has a capacity in accordance with the ratio of each number on every single digit in the last group of four numbers in Japan. Although tolerance against overload in double-, triple-, and quadruple-digit numbers does not stay close to that in the ideal situation, it still remains sufficiently high in the case of double- and triple-digit numbers. Although tolerance against overload in the quadruple-digit numbers becomes low, disaster congestion is still not likely to occur in almost half of the area of Japan (23 out of 47 prefectures).

  • Electromagnetic Interference Analysis Based on Total Harmonic Distortion Measurement in 900 MHz Cordless Telephones

    In this paper a new electromagnetic (EM) interference analysis is proposed using the total harmonic distortion (THD) measurement of the audio signal by the 900 MHz cordless telephones. The cordless telephone network in 900 MHz was built up to be weak in EM interference. 400 and 800 Hz of the sine-wave signal were used in transmitter (TX) system, and the receiver (RX) system was exposed to the EM interference. The THD value varies as the level of the exposed EM interference changes. The model of the cordless telephone also affects the THD value. By using fluctuation of the THD value depending on the amount of the exposure, the threshold value of the interference electric field strength was derived. Based on the derived threshold value of the electric field strength, validity of the regulation value for low power radio devices by CISPR 22 [CLASS B] and FCC is discussed.

  • Prioritized Call Admission Design for Providing Video Telephone Services in WCDMA Networks

    Video telephone service (VTS) is considered one of promising services provided in wideband CDMA (WCDMA) networks. Without a designated call admission policy, VTS calls are expected to suffer from relatively high probability of blocking since they normally have more stringent signal quality requirement than ordinary voice calls. In this letter, we consider a prioritized call admission design in order to reduce the blocking probability of VTS calls, which may encourage the users to access the newly-provided VTS in a more comfortable way. The VTS calls are given a priority by reserving a number of channel-processing equipments. With the reservation, the blocking probability of prioritized VTS calls can be reduced evidently. That of ordinary calls, however, is increasing instead. This letter provides a system model that counts the blocking probabilities of VTS and ordinary calls simultaneously, and numerically examines an adequate level of the prioritization for VTS calls. The results show that the prioritization level should be selected depending on received interference as well as bandwidth required for VTS.

  • Estimation of Degradation of Nickel-Cadmium Batteries for Cordless Telephones by a Discharge-Current-Pulse Technique

    We investigated the accuracy of nickel-cadmium (Ni/Cd) battery degradation estimation by measuring the capacity of over 400 used cordless-telephone batteries using a discharge-current-pulse technique. The capacity is calculated from the change in battery voltage after the current pulse is applied, using an equation that we developed. Battery degradation is represented by a percentage of the capacity based on the nominal one. To estimate the accuracy of the degradation estimation, we compare capacity Qe estimated from the current pulse with the capacity Qa measured by discharging the batteries. The Qe estimated from the current pulse was within a range of 20% of error indicated by (Qe-Qa) for 47% of the tested batteries. The Qe of 51% of the batteries, however, was underestimated and exceeded lower limit (-20%) of the error. One reason for the discrepancy could be that the equation is inadequate for estimating the capacity from the current pulse. On the other hand, the capacity Qe of 1% of the batteries was overestimated and exceeded upper limit (+20%) of the error. An internal short is probably the main reason for this.

    Lightning surges induced on subscriber lines in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is located in a tropical region, were observed at telecommunication centers. More than 100 surges per line were observed during a three-month period. Peak values, observed using a lightning surge counter, show that lightning surge current occurrences normalized by the number of thunderstorm days and number of subscriber lines closely agreed with data observed in temperate areas, e.g., Japan. Surge waveforms appearing at several points ranging from underground cable ducts to exchange equipment were observed using a wave memory system. The results show that lightning surge currents on the cables were larger than those on a wire, but the correlation between them was weak. Common and differential mode surge waveforms observed using the wave memory system were almost the same. These results will be useful in designing protection circuits for equipment used in tropical areas.

  • Realizing Highly Localized Exposure in Small Animals with Absorbing Material Covered Holder to Test Biological Effects of 1.5GHz Cellular Telephones

    In testing the possible biological effects of electromagnetic exposure from cellular telephones in small animals such as mice, it is essential to realize a highly localized head exposure as close as possible to that due to cellular telephones in humans. In this study, a 1.5GHz exposure setup was developed which has a highly localized specific absorption rate (SAR) of 2W/kg in the mouse brain and a low whole-body averaged SAR of 0.27W/kg. The low whole-body averaged SAR was realized by using a flexible magnetic sheet attachment on the mouse holder. Its validity has been carefully examined by both numerical simulation with an anatomically based mouse model and experimental simulation with a solid mouse phantom. Good agreement was obtained between the numerical and experimental results, which confirmed the effectiveness of the magnetic sheet attachment to the mouse holder.

  • A Novel Setup for Small Animal Exposure to Near Fields to Test Biological Effects of Cellular Telephones

    A novel in vivo exposure setup has been developed for testing the possible promoting effects of 1.5 GHz digital cellular phones on mouse skin carcinogenesis. The exposure setup has two main features: one is the employment of an electrically short monopole antenna with capacitive-loading, which supplies the ability to realize a highly localized peak SAR above 2 W/kg without any thermal stress for a mouse; the other is the use of a transparent absorber to allow real-time observation of both the exposure process as well as mouse activities during the exposure. Dosimetric analyses for the exposure setup have been carried out both numerically and experimentally. Good agreement was confirmed between the numerical and experimental results, thereby demonstrating the validity of the novel exposure setup.

  • Estimation of Current Distribution on Cellular Telephone Antennas Affected by Human Body Interaction

    This paper describes an estimation method for an antenna current distribution including the interaction between a cellular telephone antenna and a human body. In our experiments, current distributions on a half wavelength dipole antenna at 900 MHz are evaluated by measuring the magnetic field near the antenna, when a human head-sized phantom model is located near the dipole antenna. From the experiments, the antenna current around a feed point is confirmed to increase by 30% due to the interaction effect. This result shows that antennas of portable phones should be designed by considering the effect of a human presence for the development of the higher performance antenna, and our estimation method will contribute to optimizing the design of such antennas.

  • Low Loss Magnetic Plate Application for Increasing Radiation Efficiency of Cellular Telephones

    A low loss magnetic plate positioned near an antenna is proposed to increase radiation efficiency of cellular phones. This magnetic plate is used to control the nearby magnetic field around the cellular phone's antenna, and this field controlling is shown to be effective for the improvement of radiation efficiency and far-field pattern. As for the material design of the plate, a magnetic plate having high µr and low µr" (complex relative permeability: µr = µr - j µr") is found to be effective for achieving high performance. In our sample fabrication, a low loss magnetic sample with µr = 5.7 - j 0.7 at 900 MHz is realized. It is demonstrated that this low loss sample contributes to increased efficiency and improved far-field characteristics.

  • Recognition of Connected Digit Speech in Japanese Collected over the Telephone Network

    This paper describes experimental results on whole word HMM-based speech recognition of connected digits in Japanese with special focus on the training data size and the "sheep and goats" problem. The training data comprises 757000 digits uttered by 2000 speakers, while the testing data comprises 399000 digits uttered by 1700 speakers. The best word error rate for unknown length strings was 1.64% obtained using context dependent HMMs. The word error rate was measured for various subsets of the training data reduced both in the number of speakers (s) and the number of utterances per speakers (u). As a result, an empirical formula of s[{min(0.62s0.75, u)}0.74 + {max(0, u-0.62s0.75)}0.27] = D(Ew) was developed, where Ew and D(Ew) designate word error rate and effective data size, respectively. Analyses were conducted on several aspects of the low performance speakers accounting for the major part of recognition errors. Attempts were also made to improve their recognition performance. It was found that 33% of the low performance speakers are improved to the normal level by speaker clustering centered around each low performance speaker.

  • Head Tissue Heterogeneity Required in Computational Dosimetry for Portable Telephones

    The head tissue heterogeneity required in the spatial peak specific absorption rate (SAR) assessment for portable telephones was investigated by using the FDTD method in conjunction with an MRI-based human head model. The tissue heterogeneity of the head model was changed from one type of tissue to 17 types of tissue. The results showed that, at 900 MHz and 2 GHz, the homogeneous modeling results in an underestimate about 20% for the λ/2 monopole antenna portable telephones and an overestimate to the same extent for the λ/4 monopole or helical antenna portable telephones. A head model with a simple skin-fat-muscle-bone-brain structure seems to be sufficient to obtain a fairly accurate one-gram or ten-gram averaged spatial peak SAR value in computational dosimetry for portable telephone compliance.

    This paper reports on the development of an eyeglass-type infrared-controlled telephone communication interface for the disabled. This system is comprised of four major components: A) a headset; B) an infrared transmitting module; C) an infrared receiving/signal-processing module; and D) a main controller, the Intel-8951 microprocessor. The headset with a tongue-touch panel, a wireless earphone, and a wireless microphone. The infrared transmitting module utilizes a tongue touch panel via tongue-touch circuitry which is converted to an infrared beam and a low power laser (<0.1 mW) beam. The infrared receiving/signal-processing module, receives the infrared beam and fine tunes the unstable infrared beam into standard pulses which are used as control signals. The main controller is responsible for detecting the input signals from the infrared receiving/signal-processing module and verifying these signals with the mapping table in its memory. After the signal is verified, it is released to control the keys of the telephone interface. This design concept was mainly based on the idea that the use of an infrared remote module fastened to the eyeglasses could allow the convenient control of the dialing motion on the keys of a telephone's dialing-pad which are all modified with infrared receiving/signal-processing modules. The disabled are competent for some of work, such as a telephone operator. The increase of opportunity to do a job for the disabled would help them live independently.

  • Personal Communication Telephone New System for Digital Wireless Communication in Thailand

    By integrating three networks, namely, Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Personal Handy-Phone System (PHS) and Intelligent Network (IN) to work together as a Personal Communication Telephone (PCT) service to be offered in the Bangkok metropolis area, the PCT service enables the advent of three new concepts, first, using the same telephone number as that of the fixed line to become a "Personal Number," second, a cell coverage designed to cover larger areas than that of the PHS (by changing hand-out threshold level from 33 dBµV to 30 dBµV and hand-in threshold level from 30 dBµV to 25 dBµV) in order to reduce the muting time during the handover process and provide higher mobility at up to 60 kilometers per hour, and third, a technique of "2 carriers per area" to reduce "call drop." All these techniques will be described in this paper.

    A method is proposed for deriving a traffic characteristics model that can be used to forecast the traffic volume for intelligent telecommunication services. A sort of regression analysis with dummy variables is used to represent the service quantitatively and to construct the traffic characteristics model. Recursive least squares estimation, which is a special case of the Kalman filter, is applied to the traffic characteristics model to forecast the traffic volume. In the proposed modeling and forecasting, qualitative factors representing a certain service attribute are selected and using an information criterion, the model with the best fit is identified as the most suitable forecasting model. Numerical results using practical observation data showed that the proposed method produces an accurate forecast and is thus effective for practical use.

  • Efficient Hybrid Allocation of Processor Registers for Compiling Telephone Call Control Programs

    An efficient hybrid scheme has been developed for optimizing register allocation applicable to CISC and RISC processors, which is crucial for maximizing their execution speed. Graph-coloring at the function level is combined with a powerful local register assigner. This assigner uses accurate program flows and access patterns of variables, and optimizes a wider local range, called an extended basic-block (EBB), than other optimizing compilers. The EBB is a set of basic-blocks that constitute a tree-shaped control flow, which is suitable for the large nested branches that frequently appear in embedded system-control programs, such as those for telephone call processing. The coloring at the function level involves only the live-ranges of program variables that span EBBs. The interference graph is therefore very small even for large functions, so it can be constructed quickly. Instead of iterative live-range splitting or spilling, the unallocated live-ranges are optimized by the EBB-based register assigner, so neither load/store insertion nor code motion is needed. This facilitates generating reliable code and debug symbols. The information provided for the EBB-based assigner facilitates the priority-based heuristics, fine-grained interference checking, and deferred coloring, all of which increase the colorability. Using a thread-support package for CHILL as a sample program, performance measurement showed that local variables are successfully located in registers, and the reduction of static cycles is about 20-30%. Further improvements include using double registers and improving debuggability.

  • Reduction of Electromagnetic Absorption in the Human Head for Portable Telephones by a Ferrite Sheet Attachment

    From the standpoint of reducing the electromagnetic (EM) absorption in the human head for portable telephones, a ferrite sheet is proposed to use as a protection attachment between the antenna and the head. By using an anatomically based head model and a realistic portable telephone model, the effects of the ferrite sheet on both the reduction of EM absorption and antenna radiation pattern are numerically analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results show that a ferrite sheet can result in a reduction over 13% for the spatial peak SAR averaged over one gram of tissue relative to a degradation below 0.6 dB for the antenna radiation pattern.

    This paper describes novel techniques for analyzing power MOSFETs. Since the gate width of power MOSFETs is much larger than that of power MESFETs or HJFETs, an appropriate device design to suppress matching circuit losses is needed. These losses and the intrinsic device characteristics are analyzed employing the proposed techniques, which are based on large-signal simulations. Also, new formulas describing the dependence of saturated output power on gate width are derived to perform loss-minimized design. These techniques are applied to the design of power MOSFETs for GSM cellular telephones. As a result, an output power of 35.5 dBm with a power-added efficiency of 55% and a power gain of 10.5 dB at 900 MHz have been achieved.

  • FDTD Analysis of Electromagnetic Interaction between Portable Telephone and Human Head

    Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis is performed to evaluate the distributions of specific absorption rate (SAR) in a human head during use of a handheld portable telephone. A heterogeneous head model has been assumed which is comprised of 273 108 cubic cells 2.5 mm on a side, with the electrical properties of anatomical equivalents. A handset model has been assumed to be a metal box with either a quarter-wavelength monopole or a half-wavelength dipole operating at 900 MHz or 1.5 GHz. The maximum local SARs in the head are evaluated under various exposure conditions. The dependence of the maximum local SARs on the difference in the structures or parameters of the model, i.e. the distance between the antenna and the head, the heterogeneity of the head, the antenna type, the volume of the smoothing region of the local SAR value, skin electrical constants, and the presence or absence of auricles, are examined. It is shown that the heterogeneity of the head barely affect the maximum local SAR when the telephone is located sufficiently close to the head. It is also shown that the electrical constants of skin which has lower conductivity provide the lower maximum local SAR in the head while the maximum local SAR within the brain is not significantly affected. The auricle which lies in closest proximity to the antenna is shown to have significant effect on the maximum local SAR. It is suggested that the presence of the auricle enhances the maximum local SAR by a factor that is 1.7-2.4 larger than the model without auricles.

    The advantages of the use of directional antennas for portable telephones are demonstrated. They contribute to (1) reduction of power absorption into a head, (2) reduction of multi-path interference, and (3) power saving and increase of a battery life time. This paper compares directional and omni-directional antennas existing near the head of operator, in terms of radiation patterns with a head and the power absorbed into a head. It is pointed out that radiation patterns with a head are more or less directive for both types of antennas, while the power absorbed into a head is much smaller for directional antennas.

    When we use a telephone-handset, the frequency response of the telephone-earphone becomes degraded because of the leak through the slit between the ear and the earphone. Consequently, it is very important to establish the design method of the telephone-handset which reduces the effect of leak. No one has tried to design the telephone-handset to reduce the effect. We are the only ones to have proposed an automatic design method by nonlinear optimization techniques. However, this method gives only one set of the acoustic parameters aiming at a certain specific target frequency response, and therefore lacks flexibility in the actual design problem. On the other hand, the design method proposed in this paper, which uses Monte-Carlo method, gives an infinite number of sets of acoustic parameters that realize infinite frequency responses within the target allowable region. As these infinite number of sets become directly the design ranges of acoustic parameters, the proposed method has the flexibility that any set of the acoustic parameters belonging to the design ranges guarantees the corresponding response to be within the target allowable region, and at the same time reduces the effect of leak. This flexibility is advantageous to the actual design problem.
