High-performance computing (HPC) has penetrated into various research fields, yet the increase in computing power is limited by conventional electrical interconnections. The proposed architecture, NEST, exploits wavelength routing in arrayed waveguide grating routers (AWGRs) to achieve a scalable, low-latency, and high-throughput network. For the intra pod and inter pod communication, the symmetrical topology of NEST reduces the network diameter, which leads to an increase in latency performance. Moreover, the proposed architecture enables exponential growth of network size. Simulation results demonstrate that NEST shows 36% latency improvement and 30% throughput improvement over the dragonfly on an average.

This paper reports a novel 3D topology optimization method based on the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method for a dielectric lens antenna. To obtain an optimal lens with smooth boundary, we apply normalized Gaussian networks (NGnet) to 3D topology optimization. Using the proposed method, the dielectric lens with desired radiation characteristics can be designed. As an example of the optimization using the proposed method, the width of the main beam is minimized assuming spatial symmetry. In the optimization, the lens is assumed to be loaded on the aperture of a waveguide slot antenna and is smaller compared with the wavelength. It is shown that the optimized lens has narrower beamwidth of the main beam than that of the conventional lens.

This paper proposes the mesh-topology based wireless-powered communication network (MT-WPCN), which consists of a hybrid-access point (H-AP) and nodes. The H-AP broadcasts energy to all nodes by wireless, and the nodes harvest the energy and then communicate with other nodes including the H-AP. For the communication in the MT-WPCN, we propose the harvest-then-transceive protocol to ensure that the nodes can harvest energy from the H-AP and transmit information selectively to the H-AP or other nodes, which is not supported in most protocols proposed for the conventional WPCN. In the proposed protocol, we consider that the energy harvesting can be interrupted at nodes, since the nodes cannot harvest energy during transmission or reception. We also consider that the harvested energy is consumed by the reception of information from other nodes. In addition, the energy reservation model is required to guarantee the QoS, which reserves the infimum energy to receive information reliably by the transmission power control. Under these considerations, first, we design the half harvest-then-transceive protocol, which indicates that a node transmits information only to other nodes which do not transmit information yet, for investing the effect of the energy harvesting interruption. Secondly, we also design the full harvest-then-transceive protocol for the information exchange among nodes and compatibility with the conventional star-topology based WPCN, which indicates that a node can transmit information to any network unit, i.e., the H-AP and all nodes. We study the sum-throughput maximization in the MT-WPCN based on the half and full harvest-then-transceive protocols, respectively. Furthermore, the amount of harvested energy is analytically compared according to the energy harvesting interruption in the protocols. Simulation results show that the proposed MT-WPCN outperforms the conventional star-topology based WPCN in terms of the sum-throughput maximization, when wireless information transmission among nodes occurs frequently.

Software-defined networking (SDN) has emerged as a promising approach to enable network innovation, which can provide network virtualization through a hypervisor plane to share the same cloud datacenter network among multiple virtual networks. While, this attractive approach may bring some new problem that leads to more susceptible to the failure of network component because of the separated control and forwarding planes. The centralized control and virtual network sharing the same physical network are becoming fragile and prone to failure if the topology of virtual network and the control path is not properly designed. Thus, how to map virtual network into physical datacenter network in virtualized SDN while guaranteeing the survivability against the failure of physical component is extremely important and should fully consider more influence factors on the survivability of virtual network. In this paper, combining VN with SDN, a topology-aware survivable virtual network embedding approach is proposed to improve the survivability of virtual network by an enhanced virtual controller embedding strategy to optimize the placement selection of virtual network without using any backup resources. The strategy explicitly takes account of the network delay and the number of disjoint path between virtual controller and virtual switch to minimize the expected percentage of control path loss with survivable factor. Extensive experimental evaluations have been conducted and the results verify that the proposed technology has improved the survivability and network delay while keeping the other within reasonable bounds.

Peer-to-peer overlay networks can easily achieve a large-scale content sharing system on the Internet. Although unstructured peer-to-peer networks are suitable for finding entire partial-match content, flooding-based search is an inefficient way to obtain target content. When the shared content is semantically specified by a great number of attributes, it is difficult to derive the semantic similarity of peers beforehand. This means that content search methods relying on interest-based locality are more advantageous than those based on the semantic similarity of peers. Existing search methods that exploit interest-based locality organize multiple peer groups, in each of which peers with common interests are densely connected using short-cut links. However, content searches among multiple peer groups are still inefficient when the number of incident links at each peer is limited due to the capacity of the peer. This paper proposes a novel content search method that exploits interest-based locality. The proposed method can organize an efficient peer-to-peer network similar to the semantic small-world random graph, which can be organized by the existing methods based on the semantic similarity of peers. In the proposed method, topology transformation based on local link replacement maintains the numbers of incident links at all the peers. Simulation results confirm that the proposed method can achieve a significantly higher ratio of obtainable partial-match content than existing methods that organize peer groups.

The exchanged hypercube, denoted by EH(s,t), is a graph obtained by systematically removing edges from the corresponding hypercube, while preserving many of the hypercube's attractive properties. Moreover, ring-connected topology is one of the most promising topologies in Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. Let Rn denote a ring-connected topology. In this paper, we address the routing and wavelength assignment problem for implementing the EH(s,t) communication pattern on Rn, where n=s+t+1. We design an embedding scheme. Based on the embedding scheme, a near-optimal wavelength assignment algorithm using 2s+t-2+⌊2t/3⌋ wavelengths is proposed. We also show that the wavelength assignment algorithm uses no more than an additional 25 percent of (or ⌊2t-1/3⌋) wavelengths, compared to the optimal wavelength assignment algorithm.

End-to-end network latency has become an important issue for parallel application on large-scale high performance computing (HPC) systems. It has been reported that randomly-connected inter-switch networks can lower the end-to-end network latency. This latency reduction is established in exchange for a large amount of routing information. That is, minimal routing on irregular networks is achieved by using routing tables for all destinations in the networks. In this work, a novel distributed routing method called LOREN (Layout-Oriented Routing with Entries for Neighbors) to achieve low-latency with a small routing table is proposed for irregular networks whose link length is limited. The routing tables contain both physically and topologically nearby neighbor nodes to ensure livelock-freedom and a small number of hops between nodes. Experimental results show that LOREN reduces the average latencies by 5.8% and improves the network throughput by up to 62% compared with a conventional compact routing method. Moreover, the number of required routing table entries is reduced by up to 91%, which improves scalability and flexibility for implementation.

A number of battery-driven sensor nodes are deployed to operate a wireless sensor network, and many routing protocols have been proposed to reduce energy consumption for data communications in the networks. We have proposed a new routing policy which employs a nearest-neighbor forwarding based on hop progress. Our proposed routing method has a topology parameter named forwarding angle to determine which node to connect with as a next-hop, and is compared with other existing policies to clarify the best topology for energy efficiency. In this paper, we also formulate the energy budget for networks with the routing policy by means of stochastic-geometric analysis on hop-count distributions for random planar networks. The formulation enables us to tell how much energy is required for all nodes in the network to forward sensed data in a pre-deployment phase. Simulation results show that the optimal topology varies according to node density in the network. Direct communication to the sink is superior for a small-sized network, and the multihop routing is more effective as the network becomes sparser. Evaluation results also demonstrate that our energy formulation can well approximate the energy budget, especially for small networks with a small forwarding angle. Discussion on the error with a large forwarding angle is then made with a geographical metric. It is finally clarified that our analytical expressions can obtain the optimal forwarding angle which yields the best energy efficiency for the routing policy when the network is moderately dense.

This paper describes, for the first time, an experimental study on the layout design considerations of GaAs HBT MMIC switchable-amplifier-chain-based power amplifiers (SWPAs) for CDMA handsets. The transient response of the quiescent current and output power (Pout) in GaAs HBT power amplifiers that consist of a main chain and a sub-chain is often affected by a thermal coupling between power stages and their bias circuits in the same chain or a thermal coupling between power stages and/or their bias circuits in different chains. In particular, excessively strong thermal coupling inside the MMIC SWPA causes failure in 3GPP-compliant inner loop power control tests. An experimental study reveals that both the preheating in the main/sub-chains and appropriate thermal coupling inside the main chain are very effective in reducing the turn-on delay for the two-parallel-amplifier-chain topology; for example, i) the sub-power stage is arranged near the main power stage, ii) the sub-driver stage is placed near the main driver stage and iii) the main driver bias circuit is placed near the main power stage and the sub-power stage. The SWPA operating in Band 9 (1749.9 to 1784.9 MHz), which was designed and fabricated from the foregoing considerations, shows a remarkable improvement in the Pout turn-on delay: a reduced power level error of 0.74 dB from turn-off to turn-on in the sub-amplifier chain and a reduced power level error of over 0.30 dB from turn-off to turn-on in the main amplifier chain. The main RF power measurements conducted with a 3.4-V supply voltage and a Band 9 WCDMA HSDPA modulated signal are as follows. The SWPA delivers a Pout of 28.5 dBm, a power gain (Gp) of 28 dB, and a PAE of 39% while restricting the ACLR1 to less than -40 dBc in the main amplifier chain. In the sub-amplifier chain, 17 dBm of Pout, 23.5 dB of Gp, and 27% of PAE are obtained at the same ACLR1 level.

Particle swarm optimizer network (PSON) is one of the multi-swarm PSOs. In PSON, a population is divided into multiple sub-PSOs, each of which searches a solution space independently. Although PSON has a good solving performance, it may be trapped into a local optimum solution. In this paper, we introduce into PSON a dynamic stochastic network topology called “PSON with stochastic connection” (PSON-SC). In PSON-SC, each sub-PSO can be connected to the global best (gbest) information memory and refer to gbest stochastically. We show clearly herein that the diversity of PSON-SC is higher than that of PSON, while confirming the effectiveness of PSON-SC by many numerical simulations.

Recently, the Static Heterogeneous Particle Swarm Optimization (SHPSO) has been studied by more and more researchers. In SHPSO, the different search behaviours assigned to particles during initialization do not change during the search process. As a consequence of this, the inappropriate population size of exploratory particles could leave the SHPSO with great difficulties of escaping local optima. This motivated our attempt to improve the performance of SHPSO by introducing the dynamic heterogeneity. The self-adaptive heterogeneity is able to alter its heterogeneous structure according to some events caused by the behaviour of the swarm. The proposed triggering events are confirmed by keeping track of the frequency of the unchanged global best position (pg) for a number of iterations. This information is then used to select a new heterogeneous structure when pg is considered stagnant. According to the different types of heterogeneity, DHPSO-d and DHPSO-p are proposed in this paper. In, particles dynamically use different rules for updating their position when the triggering events are confirmed. In DHPSO-p, a global gbest model and a pairwise connection model are automatically selected by the triggering configuration. In order to investigate the scalability of and DHPSO-p, a series of experiments with four state-of-the-art algorithms are performed on ten well-known optimization problems. The scalability analysis of and DHPSO-p reveals that the dynamic self-adaptive heterogeneous structure is able to address the exploration-exploitation trade-off problem in PSO, and provide the excellent optimal solution of a problem simultaneously.

Geocast communication provides efficient group communication services to distribute information to terminals that exist in some geographical domain. For various services which use geocast communication, ad hoc network is useful as network structure. Ad hoc networks are a kind of self-organing network where terminals communicate directly with each other without network infrastructure. For ad hoc networks, terminal power saving is an important issue, because terminals are driven by the battery powered system. One approach for this issue is reducing the radio transmission range of each terminal, but it degrades reachability of user data for each terminal. In this paper, we propose a design method for radio transmission range using the target problem to improve both terminal power saving and reachability for geocast communication in an ad hoc network. Moreover, we evaluate the proposed method considering both routing protocols and media access control protocols, and clarify the applicability of the proposed method to communication protocols.

In this paper, we give a formalization of the behavior of the Content-Centric Networking (CCN) protocol with parameterizing content managements. CCN is a communications architecture that is based on the names of contents, rather than on addresses. In the protocol used in CCN, each node sends packets to the nodes that are connected to it, which communicate with further nodes that are connected to them. This kind of behaviors prevents formalizing the CCN protocol as end-to-end communications. In our previous work, we formalized the CCN protocol using the proof assistant Coq. However, in this model, each node in the network can store any number of contents. The storage for each node is usually limited and the node may drop some of the contents due to its filled storage. The model proposed in this paper permits a node to have its own content management method, and still keeps the temporal properties that are also valid in the previous model. To demonstrate difference between these models, we give a specification that is valid in the previous model but invalid in the proposed model, called orthogonality. Since it is generally invalid in CCN, the proposed model is more precise than the previous one.

In the paradigm of network coding, when the network topology information cannot be utilized completely, random linear network coding (RLNC) is proposed as a feasible coding scheme. But since RLNC neither considers the global network topology nor coordinates codings between different nodes, it may not achieve the best possible performance of network coding. Hence, the performance analysis of RLNC is very important for both theoretical research and practical applications. Motivated by a fact that different network topology information can be available for different network communication problems, we study and obtain several upper and lower bounds on the failure probability at sink nodes depending on different network topology information in this paper, which is also the kernel to discuss some other types of network failure probabilities. In addition, we show that the obtained upper bounds are tight, the obtained lower bound is asymptotically tight, and we give the worst cases for different scenarios.

The growth of the size of the routing tables limits the scalability of the conventional IP routing. As scalable routing schemes for large-scale networks are highly demanded, this paper proposes and evaluates an efficient geometric routing scheme and related low-cost node design applicable to large-scale networks. The approach guarantees that greedy forwarding on derived coordinates will result in successful packet delivery to every destination in the network by relying on coordinates deduced from a spanning tree of the network. The efficiency of the proposed scheme is measured in terms of routing quality (stretch) and size of the coordinates. The cost of the proposed router is quantified in terms of area complexity of the hardware design and all the evaluations involve comparison with a state-of-the-art approach with virtual coordinates in the hyperbolic plane. Extensive simulations assess the proposal in large topologies consisting of up to 100K nodes. Experiments show that the scheme has stretch properties comparable to geometric routing in the hyperbolic plane, while enabling a more efficient hardware design, and scaling considerably better in terms of storage requirements for coordinate representation. These attractive properties make the scheme promising for routing in large networks.

In tree-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs), multihop sensor nodes require a longer time frame to send sensed data to a sink node as the number of hops increases. The time taken for delivery of sensed data becomes a critical issue when a large WSN is deployed. This paper proposes a new data collection scheme with rapid data delivery that utilizes the so-called mobile agent technique. The proposed scheme achieves high data collection efficiency while not relying on route optimization unlike conventional data collection techniques. Simulation results show that the larger the size or the maximum hops of the network, the more effective the proposed scheme becomes. Effectiveness of the proposed scheme is also confirmed through field experiments with actual sensor devices.

This paper investigates the consensus problem of heterogeneous uncertain multi-agent systems with jointly connected topology, where the considered systems are composed of linear first-order, second-order dynamics and nonlinear Euler-Lagrange (EL) dynamics. The consensus protocol is designed to converge the position and velocity states of the linear and nonlinear heterogeneous multi-agent systems under joint connected topology, and then the adaptive consensus protocol is also proposed for heterogeneous multi-agent systems with unknown parameters in the EL dynamics under jointly connected topology. Stability analysis for piecewise continuous functions induced by the jointly connection is presented based on Lyapunov function and Cauchy's convergence criteria. Finally, some simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) defines Internet Protocol (IP) mobility which does not depend on centralized manipulation. DMM leads to the abatement of non-optimal routing, a single point of failure, and scalability problems appearing in centralized Mobility Management (MM). The fact that most DMM schemes are in the proposal phase and non-existence of a standardization, urge to investigate the proposed schemes thoroughly to confirm their capabilities and thereby, to determine the best candidate practice for DMM. This paper examines five novel DMM proposals discussed in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) using router-level Internet Service Provider (ISP) topologies of Sprint (USA), Tiscali (Europe), Telstra (AUS), and Exodus (USA), as user mobility within an ISP network is considered the most realistic and recurrent user movement in the modern scope. Results reflect behavioral differences of schemes depending on the network. ISPs closer to the Internet core with high density of Point of Presences (PoPs) such as Sprint show poorer outcome when centralized anchors/controllers are employed while Proxy Mobile IP (PMIP) based enhancements offer higher reliability. In contrast, smaller ISPs that reside farther away from the Internet core yield better performance with SDN-Based and Address Delegation schemes. Although the PMIP-Based DMM schemes perform better during handover, their outturn is trivialized due to higher latency in the data plane. In contrast, the Address Delegation and SDN-Based schemes have excessive cost and latency in performing handover due to routing table updates, but perform better in data plane, suggesting that control/data plane split may best address the optimal routing.

String-topology multi-hop network is often selected as an analysis object because it is one of the fundamental network topologies. The purpose of this paper is to establish expression for end-to-end delay for IEEE 802.11 string-topology multi-hop networks. For obtaining the analytical expression, the effects of frame collisions and carrier-sensing effect from other nodes under the non-saturated condition are obtained for each node in the network. For expressing the properties in non-saturated condition, a new parameter, which is frame-existence probability, is defined. The end-to-end delay of a string-topology multi-hop network can be derived as the sum of the transmission delays in the network flow. The analytical predictions agree with simulation results well, which show validity of the obtained analytical expressions.
