In the millimeter-wave band, the series-fed array antenna is facing a problem of large transmission loss and narrow bandwidth by using a high-permittivity and large-loss-tangent material. In this paper, an air region is inserted in the half of the height in the LTCC waveguide of εr =6.6 and tanδ =0.013 to reduce the transmission loss. The reduction of the equivalent dielectric constant by the air insertion structure enhances both the gain and the bandwidth of the series-fed slot array. The transmission loss of the single-mode rectangular waveguide has been reduced to about 1/6 by using the partially-filled structure in the 60-GHz band. In a one-dimensional slot array, the total loss has also been reduced to about 1/7. And the 3 dB-down gain bandwidth has also been increased from 1.3 GHz to 2.3 GHz.

A novel speech feature generation-based acoustic model training method for robust speaker-independent speech recognition is proposed. For decades, speaker adaptation methods have been widely used. All of these adaptation methods need adaptation data. However, our proposed method aims to create speaker-independent acoustic models that cover not only known but also unknown speakers. We achieve this by adopting inverse maximum likelihood linear regression (MLLR) transformation-based feature generation, and then we train our models using these features. First we obtain MLLR transformation matrices from a limited number of existing speakers. Then we extract the bases of the MLLR transformation matrices using PCA. The distribution of the weight parameters to express the transformation matrices for the existing speakers are estimated. Next, we construct pseudo-speaker transformations by sampling the weight parameters from the distribution, and apply the transformation to the normalized features of the existing speaker to generate the features of the pseudo-speakers. Finally, using these features, we train the acoustic models. Evaluation results show that the acoustic models trained using our proposed method are robust for unknown speakers.

This paper presents a simple 3-D array configuration for high-resolution 2-D Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation. Planar array structures like Uniform Rectangular Array (URA) or Uniform Circular Array (UCA) often well estimate azimuth angle but cannot well estimate elevation angle because of short antenna aperture in elevation direction. One may put more number of array elements to improve elevation angle estimation accuracy, however it will require very large hardware and software cost. This paper presents a simple 3-D array structure for high-resolution 2-D DOA estimation only by modifying the height of some array elements in a planar array. Based on the analysis of Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) formulation and its dependency on the height of array elements, we develop a simple 3-D array structure which improves elevation angle estimation accuracy while preserving azimuth angle estimation accuracy.
We have previously proposed an indoor monitoring and security system with an array sensor. The array sensor has some advantages, such as low privacy concern, easy installation with low cost, and wide detection range. Our study is different from the previously proposed classification method for array sensor, which uses a threshold to classify only two states for intrusion detection: nothing and something happening. This paper describes a novel state classification method based on array signal processing with a machine learning algorithm. The proposed method uses eigenvector and eigenvalue spanning the signal subspace as features, obtained from the array sensor, and assisted by multiclass support vector machines (SVMs) to classify various states of a human being or an object. The experimental results show that our proposed method can provide high classification accuracy and robustness, which is very useful for monitoring and surveillance applications.

High-performance FFT processor is indispensable for real-time OFDM communication systems. This paper presents a CORDIC based design of variable-length FFT processor which can perform various FFT lengths of 64/128/256/512/1024/2048/4096/8192-point. The proposed FFT processor employs memory based architecture in which mixed radix 4/2 algorithm, pipelined CORDIC, and conflict-free parallel memory access scheme are exploited. Besides, the CORDIC rotation angles are generated internally based on the transform of butterfly counter, which eliminates the need of ROM making it memory-efficient. The proposed architecture has a lower hardware complexity because it is ROM-free and with no dedicated complex multiplier. We implemented the proposed FFT processor and verified it on FPGA development platform. Additionally, the processor is also synthesized in 0.18 µm technology, the core area of the processor is 3.47 mm2 and the maximum operating frequency can be up to 500 MHz. The proposed FFT processor is better trade off performance and hardware overhead, and it can meet the speed requirement of most modern OFDM system, such as IEEE 802.11n, WiMax, 3GPP-LTE and DVB-T/H.

A left-handed material with simple structure is proposed. The material is composed of periodic metal strips exhibiting both electric property and magnetic property. The dispersion relations and the transmission characteristics are confirmed experimentally. The main field pattern of guided mode in the material is similar to that of the plane wave, and a transmission characteristic with low reflection is obtained for an impedance matching region.
The mode-matching applications to scattering from circular and annular apertures in a thick perfectly conducting plane are reviewed. The Hankel and Weber transforms are utilized to solve the boundary-value problems of circular and annular apertures. Simple electrostatic problems are presented to illustrate the mode-matching method in terms of the Hankel and Weber transforms. Various types of Weber transform are discussed with boundary-value problems. Electromagnetic radiation and scattering from circular and annular aperture geometries are summarized. The utility of the mode-matching method in circular and annular aperture scattering is emphasized.

In this paper, we present the first results on the preimage resistance against step-reduced versions of ISO standard hash functions RIPEMD-128 and RIPEMD-160, which were designed as strengthened versions of RIPEMD. While preimage attacks on the first 33 steps and intermediate 35 steps of RIPEMD (48 steps in total) are known, no preimage attack exists on RIPEMD-128 (64 steps) or RIPEMD-160 (80 steps). This paper shows three variations of preimage attacks of RIPEMD-128; the first 33 steps, intermediate 35 steps, and the last 32 steps. Because of the large security margin, full RIPEMD-128 is still enough secure, however, it is interesting that the number of attacked steps for RIPEMD-128 reaches the same level as for RIPEMD. We also show that our approach can be applied to RIPEMD-160, and present preimage attacks on the first 30 steps and the last 31 steps.

In this paper, we propose a novel texture analysis method capable of estimating multiple primitives, which are elements repetitively arranged to compose a texture, in multi-structured textures. The approach is based on a texture description model that uses mathematical morphology, called the “Primitive, Grain, and Point Configuration (PGPC)” texture model. The estimation of primitives based on the PGPC texture model involves searching the optimal structuring element for primitives according to a size distribution function and a magnification. The proposed method achieves the following two improvements: (1) the simultaneous estimation of a multiple number of primitives in multi-structured textures with a ranking of primitives on the basis of their significance. and (2) the introduction of flexibility in the process of magnification to obtain a higher degree of fitness of large grains. With a computational combination of different primitives, the method provides an ordered priority to denote the significance of elements. The promising performance of the proposed method is experimentally shown by a comparison with conventional methods.

In this paper, we introduce a construction of 16-QAM sequences based on known binary sequences using multiple sequences, interleaved sequences and Gray mappings. Five kinds of binary sequences of period N are put into the construction to get five kinds of new 16-QAM sequences of period 4N. These resultant sequences have 5-level autocorrelation {0, ±8, ±8N}, where ±8N happens only once each. The distributions of the periodic autocorrelation are also given. These will provide more choices for many applications.

We propose a novel dynamic hierarchical optical path network architecture that achieves efficient optical fast circuit switching. In order to complete wavelength path setup/teardown efficiently, the proposed network adaptively manages waveband paths and bundles of optical paths, which provide virtual mesh connectivity between node pairs for wavelength paths. Numerical experiments show that operational and facility costs are significantly reduced by employing the adaptive virtual waveband connections.
In this letter, a timing synchronization scheme is proposed for cooperative WBAN which can be utilized in wireless medical telemetry systems. The approach efficiently exploits the cyclic structure of a presented preamble in order to effectively separate the superposition of cooperative signals. Then, each timing-offset and each channel parameter are estimated in the separated signal. The proposed scheme effectively recovers the original data based on the timing-offset estimates and the channel estimates. The simulation results reveal the excellent performance of the suggested method in terms of MSE and PER.
This paper proposes an asymptotic method for calculating the received intensity of multi-path millimeter waves transmitted over an undulating surface. This method is a generalization of the asymptotic method that the authors previously derived, based on a quartic phase function approximation, from the physical optics integral expression of the received intensity. The applicability of the previous method is limited to ratios of transmission distance (D) to surface undulation wavelength (λs) of roughly less than 2. This is because the method is based on a quartic phase function approximation. In this paper, this limitation is resolved through this method's generalization, which is achieved by incorporating a technique for calculating the diffraction integral with a higher-degree phase function by using the steepest descent technique with a procedure for systematically identifying the active saddles of the phase function. Numerical examples demonstrate that the proposed asymptotic method can attain calculation accuracy comparable with the physical optics method, even in the case of large D/λs values.

This paper presents a compact metal plate lens antenna for evaluating a wave absorber placed on ceiling of the ETC gate. The focal distance of the lens was derived to be 129 cm by the geometrical optics procedure. By arranging the lens in front of a horn antenna, the gain and beamwidth characteristics were improved from 18 dBi to 26 dBi and from 22 degrees to 7 degrees, respectively. Then the antenna characteristics were evaluated when the distance between the antenna and the lens was changed in order to miniaturize the lens antenna. As the result, the changes in beamwidth were held to within 1 dB when the lens came close to the horn antenna. Scattering, phase and electric field intensity of electromagnetic wave were evaluated to clarify the foundation of the given characteristics. It was found that the field intensity for the miniaturized lens antenna is stronger than that for GO designed one though the phase uniformity is worse. The distance between the horn antenna and lens can be reduced to 80 cm. The absorption characteristics for the arranged absorbers which have different absorptions were measured, and it was shown that the proposed method was suitable for specifying the deteriorated absorber in the ETC system.

This paper proposes a virtual layered successive detector with adaptive transmit signal phase rotation for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) that enables high speed communication even in downlinks of wireless communication systems. It is shown that the detection performance is degraded when the eigenvalue of a virtual channel becomes close to the power of the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). Therefore, adaptive transmit signal phase rotation is introduced for the detector to improve the transmission performance. For the transmit phase rotation, three techniques to search the rotation angles are proposed, which can reduce the feedback information from the receiver to the transmitter. Among the three proposed techniques, the technique called “iterative variable step step search” is shown to achieve the best performance. Actually, it is confirmed by computer simulation that the variable step search makes the detector attain about 17 dB of a gain at the bit error rate (BER) of 10-5 in 42 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems.

A novel method for automatically creating an optimum direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation algorithm for a given radio environment using a genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. DOA estimation algorithms are generally described by parameters and operators. The performance of a DOA estimation algorithm is evaluated using root mean square error (RMSE) through computer simulations. A GA searches for the combination of parameters and operators that gives the lowest RMSE. Because a GA can treat only bit strings, Polish notation is used to convert bit strings into a DOA estimation algorithm. A computer simulation showed that the proposed method can create a new angle spectrum function. The created angle spectrum function has higher resolution than the Capon method.

It is an essential preprocess to resolve analysis problems originated from multi-meaning mathematical symbols. We first define twelve equation classes based on chapter information of mathematics textbooks and then conduct various experiments. Experimental results show an accuracy of 94.75%, by employing the feature combination of tags, operators, strings, and “identifier & operator” bigram.

This paper investigates the use of cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS) to detect primary user (PU) signals during spectrum sharing between the PU and the secondary user (SU). In particular, we employ a variant of CSS (which achieves space diversity), called weighted gain combining CSS (W-CSS), which has the potential to achieve increased diversity gain and enhance detection performance. In a typical W-CSS system, the SU needs to obtain the PU signal power information in order to set the proper weight value. However, as it is hard for the SU to ascertain whether the PU is present or absent, this is difficult to obtain. To address this problem, a PU signal power estimation algorithm is introduced. In addition, we also analyze the statistics of the estimator and derive the detection probability of the W-CSS when the PU signal power estimation algorithm is applied. The analysis and related simulation results reveal that the detection probability of the proposed W-CSS under time-variant Rayleigh fading asymptotically approaches the detection probability in an additive white Gaussian noise channel as the number of antennas is increased. This also follows results from our Monte Carlo simulations, showing that multiple antenna elements could suppress the effect of Rayleigh fading. In short, the accuracy of the estimation algorithm is affected by channel variation (especially in the case of fast Rayleigh fading). Hence, to address this problem, we employ multiple antenna elements with a square-law combining energy detector in the W-CSS.

Analytical expressions of the spatial invariance region in the data space are given. Using these results, we can determine the spatial invariance region in the data set and the imaging area. After that, we give a data blocking scheme for raw data focusing. Numerical simulation verifies the results of this paper.

Three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction techniques employed by airborne radars are essential for object recognition in scenarios where optically vision is blurry, and are required for the monitoring of disasters and coast-guard patrols. There have been reports on 3-D reconstruction methods that exploit the layover appearing in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imagery, which are suitable for the recognition of artificial targets such as buildings, aircraft or ships. However, existing methods assume only a point target or the aggregate of point targets, and most require the tracking of the multiple points over sequential ISAR images. In the case of a solid object with a continuous boundary, such as a wire or polyhedral structure, the positioning accuracy of such methods is severely degraded owing to scattering centers continuously shifting on the target surface with changes in the rotation angle. To overcome this difficulty, this paper extends the original Range Points Migration (RPM) method to the ISAR observation model, where a double mono-static model with two transmitting and receiving antennas is introduced to suppress cross-range ambiguity. The results of numerical simulation and experimental validation demonstrate that the extended RPM method has a distinct advantage for accurate 3-D imaging, even for non-point targets.
