  • Prioritization of Lane-Specific Traffic Jam Detection for Automotive Navigation Framework Utilizing Suddenness Index and Automatic Threshold Determination

    Car navigation systems provide traffic jam information. In this study, we attempt to provide more detailed traffic jam information that considers the lane in which a traffic jam is in. This makes it possible for users to avoid long waits in queued traffic going toward an unintended destination. Lane-specific traffic jam detection utilizes image processing, which incurs long processing time and high cost. To reduce these, we propose a “suddenness index (SI)” to categorize candidate areas as sudden or periodic. Sudden traffic jams are prioritized as they may lead to accidents. This technology aggregates the number of connected cars for each mesh on a map and quantifies the degree of deviation from the ordinary state. In this paper, we evaluate the proposed method using actual global positioning system (GPS) data and found that the proposed index can cover 100% of sudden lane-specific traffic jams while excluding 82.2% of traffic jam candidates. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of time savings by integrating the proposed method into a demonstration framework. In addition, we improved the proposed method's ability to automatically determine the SI threshold to select the appropriate traffic jam candidates to avoid manual parameter settings.

    QoS of applications is essential for content providers, and it is required to improve the end-to-end communication quality from a content provider to users. Generally, a content provider's data center network is connected to multiple ASes and has multiple egress paths to reach the content user's network. However, on the Internet, the communication quality of network paths outside of the provider's administrative domain is a black box, so multiple egress paths cannot be quantitatively compared. In addition, it is impossible to determine a unique egress path within a network domain because the parameters that affect the QoS of the content are different for each network. We propose a “Performance Aware Egress Path Discovery” method to improve QoS for content providers. The proposed method uses two techniques: Egress Peer Engineering with Segment Routing over IPv6 and Passive End-to-End Measurement. The method is superior in that it allows various metrics depending on the type of content and can be used for measurements without affecting existing systems. To evaluate our method, we deployed the Performance Aware Egress Path Discovery System in an existing content provider network and conducted experiments to provide production services. Our findings from the experiment show that, in this network, 15.9% of users can expect a 30Mbps throughput improvement, and 13.7% of users can expect a 10ms RTT improvement.

    An approach to dedicated computers is discussed in this study as a possibility for portable, low-cost, and low-power consumption high-performance computing technologies. Particularly, dataflow architecture dedicated computer of the finite integration technique (FIT) for 2D magnetostatic field simulation is considered for use in industrial applications. The dataflow architecture circuit of the BiCG-Stab matrix solver of the FIT matrix calculation is designed by the very high-speed integrated circuit hardware description language (VHDL). The operation of the dedicated computer's designed circuit is considered by VHDL logic circuit simulation.

    In this work, we propose a new automatic speech recognition (ASR) system based on feature learning and an end-to-end training procedure for air traffic control (ATC) systems. The proposed model integrates the feature learning block, recurrent neural network (RNN), and connectionist temporal classification loss to build an end-to-end ASR model. Facing the complex environments of ATC speech, instead of the handcrafted features, a learning block is designed to extract informative features from raw waveforms for acoustic modeling. Both the SincNet and 1D convolution blocks are applied to process the raw waveforms, whose outputs are concatenated to the RNN layers for the temporal modeling. Thanks to the ability to learn representations from raw waveforms, the proposed model can be optimized in a complete end-to-end manner, i.e., from waveform to text. Finally, the multilingual issue in the ATC domain is also considered to achieve the ASR task by constructing a combined vocabulary of Chinese characters and English letters. The proposed approach is validated on a multilingual real-world corpus (ATCSpeech), and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms other baselines, achieving a 6.9% character error rate.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic there was a rapid shift to emergency remote teaching practices and online tools for education have already gained further attention. While eLearning initiatives are developed and its implementation at scale are widely discussed, this research focuses on the utilization of data which can be logged in such eLearning systems. We demonstrate the need and potential of utilizing learning logs to create services supporting sustainable quality improvement of education. Learning and Evidence Analytics Framework (LEAF), is the overarching technology framework with affordances to adopt evidence-based practices for education. It aims to promote learning for all by introducing data-driven services for personalized approaches.

    Aiming at the problem of spatial focus regions distribution dispersion and dislocation in feature pyramid networks and insufficient feature dependency acquisition in both spatial and channel dimensions, this paper proposes a spatial-temporal aggregated shuffle attention for video instance segmentation (STASA-VIS). First, an mixed subsampling (MS) module to embed activating features from the low-level target area of feature pyramid into the high-level is designed, so as to aggregate spatial information on target area. Taking advantage of the coherent information in video frames, STASA-VIS uses the first ones of every 5 video frames as the key-frames and then propagates the keyframe feature maps of the pyramid layers forward in the time domain, and fuses with the non-keyframe mixed subsampled features to achieve time-domain consistent feature aggregation. Finally, STASA-VIS embeds shuffle attention in the backbone to capture the pixel-level pairwise relationship and dimensional dependencies among the channels and reduce the computation. Experimental results show that the segmentation accuracy of STASA-VIS reaches 41.2%, and the test speed reaches 34FPS, which is better than the state-of-the-art one stage video instance segmentation (VIS) methods in accuracy and achieves real-time segmentation.

    This paper describes a novel low-latency 4K 60 fps HEVC (high efficiency video coding)/H.265 multi-channel encoding system with content-aware bitrate control for live streaming. Adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming techniques, such as MPEG-DASH (dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP) and HLS (HTTP live streaming), spread widely on Internet video streaming. Live content has increased with the expansion of streaming services, which has led to demands for traffic reduction and low latency. To reduce network traffic, we propose content-aware dynamic and seamless bitrate control that supports multi-channel real-time encoding for ABR, including 4K 60 fps video. Our method further supports chunked packaging transfer to provide low-latency streaming. We adopt a hybrid architecture consisting of hardware and software processing. The system consists of multiple 4K HEVC encoder LSIs that each LSI can encode 4K 60 fps or up to high-definition (HD) ×4 videos efficiently with the proposed bitrate control method. The software takes the packaging process according to the various streaming protocol. Experimental results indicate that our method reduces encoding bitrates obtained with constant bitrate encoding by as much as 56.7%, and the streaming latency over MPEG-DASH is 1.77 seconds.

    In 2015, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation started to provide information on aircraft flying over Japan, called CARATS Open Data, and to promote research on aviation systems actively. The airspace is divided into sectors, which are used for limiting air traffic to control safely and efficiently. Since the demand for air transportation is increasing, new optimization techniques and efficient control have been required to predict and resolve demand-capacity imbalances in the airspace. In this paper, we aim to construct mathematical models of the inter-sector air traffic flow from CARATS Open Data. In addition, we develop methods to predict future sector demand. Accuracy of the prediction is evaluated by comparison between predicted sector demand and the actual data.

    To accommodate an increasing amount of traffic efficiently, elastic optical networks (EON) that can use optical spectrum resources flexibly have been studied. We implement multi-path routing in case we cannot allocate the spectrum with single-path routing. However, multi-path routing requires more guard bands to avoid interference between two adjacent optical paths when compared with single-path routing in EON. A multi-path routing algorithm with traffic grooming technology has been proposed. The researchers assumed that a uniform modulation level was adopted, and so they did not consider the impact of path length on the resources needed. In this paper, we propose a multi-path routing method with traffic grooming considering path lengths. Our proposed method establishes an optical multi-path considering path length, fiber utilization, and the use of traffic grooming. Simulations show we can decrease the call-blocking probability by approximately 24.8% in NSFNET. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of traffic grooming and the improvement in the utilization ratio of optical spectrum resources.

    This paper reports on the ambipolar conduction for the λ-Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) field effect transistor (FET) with 450, 400 and 250 base pair experimentally and theoretically. It was found that the drain current of the p-type DNA/Si FET increased as the ratio of the guanine-cytosine (GC) pair increased and that of the n-type DNA/Si FET decreased as the ratio of the adenine-thymine (AT) pair decreased, and the ratio of the GC pair and AT pair was controlled by the total number of the base pair. In addition, it was found that the hole conduction mechanism of the 400 bp DNA/Si FET was polaron hopping and its activation energy was 0.13eV. By considering the electron affinity of the adenine, thymine, guanine, and cytosine, the ambipolar characteristics of the DNA/Si FET was understood. The holes are injected to the guanine base for the negative gate voltage, and the electrons are injected to the adenine, thymine, and cytosine for the positive gate voltage.

    Feature representation is a key component of most visual tracking algorithms. It is difficult to deal with complex appearance changes with low-level hand-crafted features due to weak representation capacities of such features. In this paper, we propose a novel tracking algorithm through combining a joint dictionary pair learning with convolutional neural networks (CNN). We utilize CNN model that is trained on ImageNet-Vid to extract target features. The CNN includes three convolutional layers and two fully connected layers. A dictionary pair learning follows the second fully connected layer. The joint dictionary pair is learned upon extracted deep features by the trained CNN model. The temporal variations of target appearances are learned in the dictionary learning. We use the learned dictionaries to encode target candidates. A linear combination of atoms in the learned dictionary is used to represent target candidates. Extensive experimental evaluations on OTB2015 demonstrate the superior performances against SOTA trackers.

    Traditional safety analysis techniques have shown difficulties in incorporating dynamically changing structures of CPSs (Cyber-Physical Systems). STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis), one of the widely used, needs to unfold and arrange all hidden structures before beginning a full-fledged analysis. This paper proposes an intermediate model “Information Unfolding Model (IUM)” and a process “Information Unfolding Process (IUP)” to unfold dynamic structures which are hidden in CPSs and so help analysts construct control structures in STPA thoroughly.

    This paper proposes a fast and scalable traffic monitoring system called Fast xFlow Proxy. For efficiently provisioning and operating networks, xFlow such as IPFIX and NetFlow is a promising technology for visualizing the detailed traffic matrix in a network. However, internet protocol (IP) packets in a large carrier network are encapsulated with various outer headers, e.g., layer 2 tunneling protocol (L2TP) or multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) labels. As native xFlow technologies are applied to the outer header, the desired inner information cannot be visualized. From this motivation, we propose Fast xFlow Proxy, which explores the complicated carrier's packet, extracts inner information properly, and relays the inner information to a general flow collector. Fast xFlow Proxy should be able to handle various packet processing operations possible (e.g., header analysis, header elimination, and statistics) at a wire rate. To realize the processing speed needed, we implement Fast xFlow Proxy using the data plane development kit (DPDK) and field-programmable gate array (FPGA). By optimizing deployment of processes between DPDK and FPGA, Fast xFlow Proxy achieves wire rate processing. From evaluations, we can achieve over 20 Gbps performance by using a single server and 100 Gbps performance by using scale-out architecture. We also show that this performance is sufficiently practical for monitoring a nationwide carrier network.

    Autonomous driving technology is currently attracting a lot of attention as a technology that will play a role in the next generation of mobility. For autonomous driving in urban areas, it is necessary to recognize various information. Especially, the recognition of traffic lights is important in crossing intersections. In this paper, traffic light recognition technology developed by the authors was evaluated using onboard sensor data during autonomous driving in the Tokyo waterfront area as an example of traffic light recognition technology. Based on the results, it was found that traffic lights could be recognized with an accuracy of approximately 99% to carry out the decision making for intersection approaching. However, from the evaluation results, it was also confirmed that traffic light recognition became difficult under situations involving occlusion by other object, background assimilation, nighttime conditions, and backlight by sunlight. It was also confirmed that these effects are mostly temporary, and do not significantly affect decision-making to enter intersections as a result of utilizing information from multiple traffic lights installed at an intersection. On the other hand, it is expected that recognition with current onboard cameras will become technically difficult during situations in which not all traffic lights are visually recognizable due to the effects of back or front light by sunlight when stopped at the stop line of an intersection. This paper summarizes these results and presents the necessity of appropriate traffic light installation on the assumption of recognition by onboard cameras.

  • A Study on Gain Enhanced Leaf-Shaped Bow-Tie Slot Array Antenna within Quasi-Millimeter Wave Band

    In this paper, a linear array of 4 leaf-shaped bowtie slot antennas is proposed for use in quasi-millimeter wave band. The slot antennas array is designed to operate at 28GHz frequency band. The leaf-shaped bowtie slot antenna is a type of self-complementary antenna with low profile and low cost of fabrication. The proposed antenna structure offers improvement in radiation pattern, gain, and -10dB impedance bandwidth. Through out of this paper radiation pattern, actual gain, and -10dB impedance bandwidth are evaluated by Finite Different Time Domain (FDTD) simulation. Antenna characteristics are analyzed in the frequency range of 27GHz to 29GHz. To improve antenna characteristics such as actual gain and -10dB impedance bandwidth, a dielectric superstrate layer with relative permittivity of 10.2 is placed on top of ground plane of the slot antennas array. Three antenna structures are introduced and compared. With two layers of dielectric superstrate on top of the antennas ground plane, analysis results show that -10dB impedance bandwidth occupies the frequency range of 27.17GHz to 28.39GHz. Therefore, the operational impedance bandwidth is 1.22GHz. Maximum actual gain of the slot antennas array with two dielectric superstrate layers is 20.49dBi and -3dB gain bandwidth occupies the frequency range of 27.02GHz to 28.57GHz. To validate the analysis results, prototype of the designed slot antennas array is fabricated. Characteristics of the slot antennas array are measured and compared with the analysis results.

    Controlled optimization of phases (COP) is a core implementation in the future intelligent traffic signal system (I-SIG), which has been deployed and tested in countries including the U.S. and China. In such a system design, optimal signal control depends on dynamic traffic situation awareness via connected vehicles. Unfortunately, I-SIG suffers data spoofing from any hacked vehicle; in particular, the spoofing of the last vehicle can break the system and cause severe traffic congestion. Specifically, coordinated attacks on multiple intersections may even bring cascading failure of the road traffic network. To mitigate this security issue, a blockchain-based multi-intersection joint defense mechanism upon COP planning is designed. The major contributions of this paper are the following. 1) A blockchain network constituted by road-side units at multiple intersections, which are originally distributed and decentralized, is proposed to obtain accurate and reliable spoofing detection. 2) COP-oriented smart contract is implemented and utilized to ensure the credibility of spoofing vehicle detection. Thus, an I-SIG can automatically execute a signal planning scheme according to traffic information without spoofing data. Security analysis for the data spoofing attack is carried out to demonstrate the security. Meanwhile, experiments on the simulation platform VISSIM and Hyperledger Fabric show the efficiency and practicality of the blockchain-based defense mechanism.

  • Classifying Near-Miss Traffic Incidents through Video, Sensor, and Object Features

    Front video and sensor data captured by vehicle-mounted event recorders are used for not only traffic accident evidence but also safe-driving education as near-miss traffic incident data. However, most event recorder (ER) data shows only regular driving events. To utilize near-miss data for safe-driving education, we need to be able to easily and rapidly locate the appropriate data from large amounts of ER data through labels attached to the scenes/events of interest. This paper proposes a method that can automatically identify near-misses with objects such as pedestrians and bicycles by processing the ER data. The proposed method extracts two deep feature representations that consider car status and the environment surrounding the car. The first feature representation is generated by considering the temporal transitions of car status. The second one can extract the positional relationship between the car and surrounding objects by processing object detection results. Experiments on actual ER data demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately identify and tag near-miss events.

    The solution of the ordinary kernel ridge regression, based on the squared loss function and the squared norm-based regularizer, can be easily interpreted as a stochastic linear estimator by considering the autocorrelation prior for an unknown true function. As is well known, a stochastic affine estimator is one of the simplest extensions of the stochastic linear estimator. However, its corresponding kernel regression problem is not revealed so far. In this paper, we give a formulation of the kernel regression problem, whose solution is reduced to a stochastic affine estimator, and also give interpretations of the formulation.

    Utilization data (a kind of incomplete data) is defined as the fraction of a fixed period in which the system is busy. In computer systems, utilization data is very common and easily observable, such as CPU utilization. Unlike inter-arrival times and waiting times, it is more significant to consider the parameter estimation of transaction-based systems with utilization data. In our previous work [7], a novel parameter estimation method using utilization data for an Mt/M/1/K queueing system was presented to estimate the parameters of a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Since NHPP is classified as a simple counting process, it may not fit actual arrival streams very well. As a generalization of NHPP, Markovian arrival process (MAP) takes account of the dependency between consecutive arrivals and is often used to model complex, bursty, and correlated traffic streams. In this paper, we concentrate on the parameter estimation of an MAP/M/1/K queueing system using utilization data. In particular, the parameters are estimated by using maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method. Numerical experiments on real utilization data validate the proposed approach and evaluate the effective traffic intensity of the arrival stream of MAP/M/1/K queueing system. Besides, three kinds of utilization datasets are created from a simulation to assess the effects of observed time intervals on both estimation accuracy and computational cost. The numerical results show that MAP-based approach outperforms the exiting method in terms of both the estimation accuracy and computational cost.
