  • Median Differential Order Statistic Filters

    The purpose of our research is to get further improvement in the performance of order statistic filters. The basic idea found in our research is the use of a robust median estimator to obtain median differential order information which the classes of order statistic filter required in order to sort the input signal in the filter window. In order to give the motivation for using a median estimator in the classes of order statistic filters, we derive theorems characterizing the median filters and prove them theoretically using the characteristic that the order statistic filter has the performance for a monotonic signal equivalent with the FIR linear filter. As an application of median operation, we propose and investigate the Median Differential Order Statistic Filter to reduce impulsive noise as well as Gaussian noise and regard it as a subclass of the Order Statistic Filter. Moreover, we introduce the piecewise linear function in the Median Differential Order Statistic Filter to improve performance in terms of edge preservation. We call it the Piecewise Linear Median Differential Order Statistic Filter. The effectiveness of proposed filters is verified theoretically by computing the output Mean Square Error of the filters in parts of edge signals, impulsive noise, small amplitude noise and their combination. Computer simulations also show that the proposed filter can improve the performance in both noise (small-amplitude Gaussian noise and impulsive noise) reduction and edge preservation for one-dimensional signals.

  • Some Considerations of Transient Negative Photoconductivity in Silicon Doped with Gold

    After the intrinsic pulsed light illumination, a transient negative photoconductivity (TRANP) was observed in silicon doped with gold. The ambient temperature dependence of the TRANP-current was measured and compared with the simulated results obtained by solving rate equations. The temperature dependence of the peak value of the TRANP-current was in agreement with the simulated result. The activation energy of gold acceptor level obtained from the time constant in the recovery process was also consistent with the simulation. It was cleared from this result that the recovery process is dominated by the electron re-emission from gold acceptor level to the conduction band. It was concluded that the occurrence of the TRANP is well explained by using our model proposed before.

    This paper describes the structure and properties of superconductive small antennas with thin-film matching circuits. These circuits make it possible to realize small antennas, 38 mm20 mm16 mm in size. This is one quarter the length of our previously reported ceramic antennas. The actual gain of this antennas was -4.5 dBi at 470 MHz. This value is 5.5 dB higher than that of Cu antennas with exactly the same structure.

  • Performance Analysis of ATM Cell Multiplexer with MMPP Input

    This paper analyzes the performance of an ATM cell multiplexer with a two level MMPP input on a discrete-time basis. We approximated the input process as a simple MMPP model. We developed an MMPP/D/1/K queueing model for the ATM cell multiplexer, and employed an analytic approach for the evaluation of cell loss probability. We verified the accuracy of the results using computer simulation. We applied the above analytic method to connection admission control (CAC) of the ATM network. The resulting connection admission control scheme employs the concept of the "effective bandwidth" and table-look-up procedure. We confirmed through a computer simulation that the proposed connection admission control scheme outperforms the peak bandwidth allocation scheme with respect to link utilization.

    As the size and complexity of network increases, the distributed systems management (DSM) will be vital in order to improve the availability of network management, to reduce the complexity of network operations, and to provide the high reliability. In this paper, we (1) describe general requirements required for systems management in distributed environment, (2) introduce the basic structure of distributed network management system (DNMS) for efficient network management, and also especially illustrate the concrete design of system management application process which is an important element among them, (3) propose the connectionless CMIP to accomplish for effectively managing the distributed management system, and indicate its efficiency; this protocol is available to manage dynamically changing DSM environment, to negotiate among the managing systems, to handle the dynamic informations etc. Finally, (4) the behavior and software structure of a suggested management system during negotiation to execute the received request for implementation are presented.

    A ner trial of statistical evaluation for a nonstationary traffic flow and its traffic noise is proposed as a prediction method of its probability distribution function by considering the temporal change of distribution parameters especially from a structural viewpoint. First, a headway distribution of the nonstationary traffic flow passing through within a road segment is proposed on the basis of an Erlang distribution by reflecting a temporal change of its distribution parameters. Then, an initial phase density concerning with asynchronous counting method and the probability of counting n cars over a long time interval are derived from the above nonstationary expression of headway distribution. Thus, the statistics of noise intensity at an observation point has been predicted by combining the above probabilistic factors and deterministic factors related to noise propagation environment with use of a compound stochastic process model. Finally, te effectivenss of the proposed theory has been confirmed experimentally by applying it to the actual traffic flow on a highway.

  • Microwave Mixing Characteristics of Thin-Film YBCO Josephson Mixers at 77 K

    Thin-film YBCO Josephson junctions were successfully fabricated by a pulsed excimer laser ablation, and the mixing experiments in the microwave region (820 GHz) were carried out at the temperature of 77 K. The IF output maximum was obtained at the bias voltage midway between the zero and the first Shapiro steps for the fundamental mixing. For the 2nd harmocic mixing, the IF output maximum was obtained at a zero bias voltage, and the conversion efficiency was -14 dB at the microwave frequency of 18 GHz. These results strongly suggest that the fabricated thin-film Josephson junctions work well at the temperature of 77 K as detectors and mixers in the microwave regions (820 GHz).

    Sandwich-type Josephson junctions with the structure Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Ox/Bi2Sr2Cu1Oy/Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2Oz (BSCCO/BSCO/BSCCO), have been fabricated and their characterstics determined. The BSCO barrier layer, which is characterized by a crystal structure close to that of the BSCCO electrode layer, is a normal conductor at 4.2 K. Superconductor/normal-conductor/superconductor (S/N/S) type current-voltage characteristics are obtained with these junctions. Distinctive Shapiro steps are observed when they are exposed to microwave radiation. An oscillating behavior of each step in their I-V characteristics are confirmed for increased microwave power. The critical current, Ic, is found to be proportional to (1-T/Tc)2 in the neighborhood of Tc. These results coincide with the ones observed with conventional S/N/S junctions.

    Experimental results on the superconducting three-terminal devices Using Bi-system High-Tc Superconductors were reported. The VCJJ (Variabel critical-current-type Josephson junction devices) using the thermal effect (VCJJ) and a dual gate Josephson device of a new current-injection type are described. The basic technology and problems for high-Tc three-terminal devices are briefly discussed.

  • High Tc Superconducting Microwave Passive Components

    We have fabricated superconducting microwave passive components such as resonators, bandpass filters and delay lines with YBCO thin film conductors deposited on MgO substrates. Considerably high unloaded Q values of 12000 at 5.5 GHz was obtained with the YBCO microstrip resonator at 77 K, which indicated that the surface resistance of the YBCO thin film was 0.79 mΩ at that frequency and temperature. Excellent microwave properties were also demonstrated with the bandpass filter and the delay line. Considerably low insertion loss of about 1 dB was obtained with the 10 GHz YBCO bandpass filters at 77 K which have a various bandwidth from 0.5% to 10%. Also excellent microwave propagation was obtained with a 1.3 nsec YBCO coplanar delay line. Its insertion loss was less than 1 dB for the frequencies up to 4 GHz.

    This paper describes the properties of non-dispersive and dispersive delay lines fabricated using EuBaCuO superconducting films. The 24 cm long stripline non-dispersive delay line showed a very low loss of 0.3 dB/nsec at 77 K and 10 GHz, and no dispersion at a delay time of 2.3 nsec at frequencies below 20 GHz. The 14 cm long microstrip dispersive delay line with modal dispersion exhibited a relative delay time of approximately 120 psec in the 118 GHz frequency range. The 26 cm long stripline dispersive delay line with structural dispersion due to coupling provided a relative delay time of 230 psec in the above frequency range and roughly the same loss as a non-dispersive delay line.

    Low temperature experiments have been made to demonstrate the operation of LiNbO3 optical modulator with superconducting electrodes. The operation of the modulator for applied dc signals as well as microwave signals in the frequency range between 8 GHz and 12 GHz has been observed at temparatures as low as 4.2 K. The present results indicate a possibility of realizing high performance LiNbO3 optical modulators employing superconducting electrodes.

  • Wave Distribution Functions of Magnetospheric VLF Waves with Multiple Field Components: The Effect of the Polarization Model in the Integration Kernels on the Reconstruction of Wave Distribution Functions

    The wave distribution functions (WDFs) have been reconstructed by means of the maximum entropy inversion to the observed spectral matrix composed of the auto- and cross-power spectra among the three field components (Bx, By and Ez) in which the exactly right-handed circular polarization is taken in the integration kernels. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the properties of wave distribution functions reconstructed for wave sources whose central polarization is somewhat deviated from right-handed circular and to study (1) the WDF's by using the right-handed circular polarization in the kernels, (2) the effect of larger deviations for the polarization of elementary plane waves consituting the wave source, (3) the WDF's based on the elliptical polarization kernels and (4) the effect of limiting the number of eigenvalues. It is then found that changing the polarization model in the integration kernels would be helpful in finding out the polarization of the actually observed signals.

  • The Effect of Chemical Cleaning on Bulk Traps in Dry Gate Oxide

    The hole-trapping and electron-trapping characteristics in dry oxides following various chemical cleanings have been studied using the avalanche injection method. The results indicated that hole trap density was almost the same for the chemical cleanings. Electron traps with two capture cross sections, σ, were observed. Electron traps with σ210-17 cm2 were found to be independent of the chemical cleaning, while those with σ410-19 cm2 to depend on the cleaning. Comparison with previous works indicated that electron traps with larger σ were related to Si-OH bonds. The other electron trap showed the increasing trapping rate with increasing the current density injected into oxide. This was explained by trap generation due to electron injection. A correlation between the density of generated electron traps and the amount of Al contamination on surfaces before dry oxidation was observed.

  • Inductive Inferability for Formal Languages from Positive Data

    In this paper, we deal with inductive inference of an indexed family of recursive languages. We give two sufficient conditions for inductive inferability of an indexed family from positive data, each of which does not depend on the indexing of the family. We introduce two notions of finite cross property for a class of languages and a pair of finite tell-tales for a language. The former is a generalization of finite elasticity due to Wright and the latter consists of two finite sets of strings one of which is a finite tell-tale introduced by Angluin. The main theorem in this paper is that if any language of a class has a pair of finite tell-tales, then the class is inferable from positive data. Also, it is shown that any language of a class with finite cross property has a pair of finite tell-tales. Hence a class with finite cross property is inferable from positive data. Further-more, it is proved that a language has a finite tell-tale if and only if there does not exist any infinite cross sequence of languages contained in the language.

  • Runlength-Limited Codes which Turn Peak-Shift Errors into Unidirectional Byte Errors

    In this letter, we consider a magnetic or optical recording system employing a concatenated code that consists of a runlength-limited (d, k) block code as an inner code and a byte-error-correcting code as an outer code. (d, k) means that any two consecutive ones in the code bit stream are separated by at least d zeros and by at most k zeros. The minimum separation d and the maximum separation k are imposed in order to reduce intersymbol interference and extract clock control from the received bit stream, respectively. This letter recommends to use as the outer code a unidirectional-byte-error-correcting code instead of an ordinary byte-error-correcting code. If we devise the mapping of the code symbols of the outer code onto the codewords of the inner code, we may improve the error performance. Examples of the mappings are described.

  • Analogical Reasoning as a Form of Hypothetical Reasoning

    The meaning of analogical reasoning in locally stratified logic programs are described by generalized stable model (GSM) semantics. Although studies on the theoretical aspects of analogical reasoning have recently been on the increase, there have been few attempts to give declarative semantics for analogical reasoning. This paper takes notice of the fact that GSM semantics gives meaning to the effect that the negated predicates represent exceptional cases. We define predicates that denote unusual cases regarding analogical reasoning; for example, ab(x)p(x)g(x), where p(s), q(s), p(t) are given. We also add rules with negated occurrences of such predicates into the original program. In this way, analogical models for original programs are given in the form of GSMs of extended programs. A proof procedure for this semantics is presented. The main objective of this paper is not to construct a practical analogical reasoning system, but rather to present a framework for analyzing characteristics of analogical reasoning.

  • Lossless Image Compression by Two-Dimensional Linear Prediction with Variable Coefficients

    A lossless image compression method based on two-dimensional (2D) linear prediction with variable coefficients is proposed. This method employs a space varying autoregressive (AR) model. To achieve a higher compression ratio, the method introduces new ideas in three points: the level conversion, the fast recursive parameter estimation, and the switching method for coding table. The level conversion prevents an AR model from predicting gray-level which does not exist in an image. The fast recursive parameter estimation algorithm proposed here calculates varying coefficients of linear prediction at each pixel in shorter time than conventional one. For encoding, the mean square error between the predicted value and the true one is calculated in the local area. This value is used to switch the coding table at each pixel to adapt it to the local statistical characteristics of an image. By applying the proposed method to "Girl" and "Couple" of IEEE monochromatic standard images, the compression ratios of 100 : 46 and 100 : 44 have been achieved, respectively. These results are superior to the best results (100 : 61 and 100 : 57) obtained by the approach under JPEG recommendations.

    In general, a two-dimensional display is defined by two orthogonal unit vectors. In developing the display, discriminant analysis has a shortcoming that the extracted axes are not orthogonal in general. First, in order to overcome the shortcoming, we propose discriminant analysis which provides an orthonormal system in the transformed space. The transformation preserves the discriminatory ability in terms of the Fisher criterion. Second, we present a necessary and sufficient condition that discriminant analysis in the original space provides an orthonormal system. Finally, we investigate the relationship between orthogonal discriminant analysis and the Karhunen-Loeve expansion in the original space.

  • On Quality Improvement of Reconstructed Images in Diffraction Tomography

    This letter discusses the quality improvement of reconstructed images in diffraction tomography. An efficient iterative procedure based on the modified Newton-Kantorovich method and the Gerchberg-Papoulis algorithm is presented. The simulated results demonstrate the property of high-quality reconstruction even for cases where the first-order Born approximation fails.
