    This paper introduces the water ring scan method especially designed for the scalable video coding schemes such as fine granularity scalabilities (FGS) on the basis of MPEG-4 part-2 and the H.264. The proposed scanning method can improve the subjective quality of the decoded video by most-preferentially encoding, transmitting and decoding the image information of the region of interest. From the various simulation results of FGS coding schemes with MPEG-4 part 2 and H.264, the proposed scanning method can improve the subjective picture quality about 0.5 dB 3.5 dB better than the widely used raster scan order, especially on the region of interest, without significant loss of the quality in the left-over region.

    Optimum wideband beam pattern synthesis methods are usually sensitive to antenna elements gain, phase and position errors. In this letter, these errors are taken into account in a constraint optimization process, and a generalized diagonal loading algorithm is obtained. Computer simulations indicate the robustness of this new method.

    This paper reports the strength of a pseudorandom number generator MUGI, which was published as a stream cipher by Hitachi, Ltd. in 2001, against linear cryptanalysis. MUGI is one of the recommended ciphers of CRYPTREC, which is a project for the e-Government in Japan. It has two internal states called state and buffer, which are updated by a linear function λ and a non-linear function ρ. The non-linear function ρ and the linear function λ have already been analyzed, independently. In this paper, whole MUGI is analyzed by truncated linear cryptanalysis. The analysis of λ function is based on the state variables method. The result is combined to the result of the analysis of ρ function to make a trellis diagram. Viterbi search is conducted on the diagram to find the best possible linear path under 64-bit truncated linear cryptanalysis. As the result, the upper bound of the maximum linear characteristic probability is estimated as less than 2-138. Therefore, MUGI is secure against linear cryptanalysis.

    We have proposed and experimentally demonstrated a novel WDM-PON downstream optical link. It is composed of a wavelength-locked FP-LD with a spectrally-sliced FP-LD as an external-injection optical source and operated as directly-modulating in a downstream-traffic transmitter. The downstream transmissions at 622 Mbps and 2.5 Gbps were performed for four channels over 25 km. The proposed WDM-PON downstream transmitter can be expanded up to eight channels by controlling an external-injection optical source of a spectrally-sliced FP-LD. Also, the transmitter has facility of multi-channel selection by controlling temperature. We verified the potential of the transmitter in WDM-PON optical link.

  • Optimal Replication Algorithm for Scalable Streaming Media in Content Delivery Networks

    CDN (Content Delivery Networks) improves end-user performance by replicating web contents on a group of geographically distributed servers. However, repeatedly keeping the entire replica of the original objects into many content servers consumes too much server resource. This problem becomes more serious for the large-sized objects such as streaming media, e.g. high quality video. In this paper, we therefore propose an efficient replication method for layered video streams in CDN, which can reduce user response delays and storage costs simultaneously. Based on an analytical formulation of the cooperative replication of layers and segments of each video stream, we derive a replication algorithm which solves next three problems quantitatively. (1) How many servers should be selected to replicate a given video stream? (2) For a single video stream, how many layers and segments should be stored in a given server? (3) After selecting a group of servers for each video stream, how do we allocate the replication priority (i.e. order) to each server? Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm efficiently resolves the above problems and provides much better performance than conventional methods.

  • A High Time-Resolution Traffic Monitoring System

    This innovative traffic-monitoring-system makes it possible to observe data-communication traffic on an oscilloscope-style display. It provides an efficient way of evaluating streaming-data quality. The monitoring system has a high time-resolution traffic value sampling function and a real-time data representation/recording mechanism that operate in synchrony. The user can directly evaluate the traffic shape with the monitoring system. In this paper, after describing the concept of the traffic monitoring system, we will describe a prototype built with programmable network equipment called A-BOX. We will then review a performance evaluation and other experimental results to prove that our monitoring system is suitable for video streaming.

    In this paper, we propose an autonomously distributed QoS control method for MPEG video streaming in a wide area network. The capacity of the links and the characteristics of video streams change dynamically. However, managing the condition of all the links and streams in the network is difficult. In the proposed method, the routers in the network monitor the conditions of the links and streams locally and control the transmission rate of the stream server. Picture-quality oriented fairness is achieved by reducing the transmission rate of the streams with the higher PSNR in the bottleneck link. The computer simulation results show that the proposed method can be applied to a wide area network.

    In this paper, we propose an MPEG-2 TS encryption and decryption scheme which can support MPEG-2 TS streaming, and a key management scheme which can provide secure delivery of the key used to encrypt MPEG-2 TS from the package server to DRM clients in a secure manner. The key management scheme protects the key not only from purchasers but also among the other principals who manage the distribution servers and license servers. The proposed scheme can protect from attacks over a network since a pre-encrypted MPEG-2 TS is sent by a streaming server and only DRM clients can decrypt the streamed MPEG-2 TS. An MPEG-2 TS streaming server can send the encrypted stream without modifying it and degrading its performance because MPEG-2 TS is encrypted but compliant to the MPEG-2 TS format. The processing time to decrypt a streamed MPEG-2 TS in client systems is minimized to guarantee the quality of streaming.

    In this paper, we term multimedia streaming application traffic "stream flows" and the other usual application traffic "non-stream flows." Many problems occur when both flows are aggregated on a shared link because the different TCP and UDP behaviors cause negative interactions. One way to solve these problems is to isolate stream and non-stream flows to different classes. However, it is difficult to determine the bandwidth allocation for each class and dynamic bandwidth allocation schemes are hard to implement on large scale networks. We therefore propose a dynamic class assignment method that maintains the QoS and that has a higher scalability than dynamic bandwidth allocation schemes. It is workable on Diffserv AF PHB. The outline is as follows. We classify non-stream flows into four classes and dynamically assign stream flows to the classes, taking the conditions and characteristics of the classes into consideration. On assigning classes to stream flows, we map them to a higher drop precedence than non-stream flows not to degrade the QoS of them, based on the assumption that occasional packets being dropped do not create serious problems for them. In this paper, we first discuss our classification of non-stream flows, and present the characteristics of non-stream flows in each class. We then discuss our drop precedence mapping. After this, we propose an algorithm for our method of dynamic class assignment and provide some simulation results where it could provide constant qualities with stream and non-stream flows, adapting to changing traffic.

  • A Novel Prefilter-Type Beamformer Robust to Directional Error

    Some conventional beamformers require the direction of the desired signal. The performance of such beamformers can substantially be degraded even in the presence of small error on the directional information. In this letter, we propose a prefilter-type beamforming scheme robust to directional error by employing a simple compensator. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified by computer simulation.

    In packet networks including the Internet and commercial 3G wireless bearers, the network states that a streaming media application experiences are not known a priori and exhibit time-varying characteristics. For such dynamic environments, network-adaptive techniques are essential to efficiently deliver video data. In this paper, we propose a frame-based optimal scheduling algorithm which incorporates a MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) framework for adapting to varying network loss rate. The optimal transmission schedule is determined such that effective frame-rate is maximized at playback. Also, for multiple packets per frame, frame-based selection of delivery order greatly reduces computational complexity for a server scheduler when compared with packet-based scheduling techniques. In addition, by dynamically estimating instantaneous packet loss probability, the proposed scheduler performs network-adaptive transmission for streaming video over time-varying packet networks. Simulation results for test video sequence show that the proposed scheduling algorithm outperforms conventional ARQ-based schemes from a view point of reconstructed video quality as well as playable frame-rate. In particular, the proposed scheduling algorithm exhibits significant improvements of frame-rate over highly lossy channels.

    We have proposed and theoretically verified a 2R (reshaping and regeneration) limiter circuit using continuous wave (CW) holding beam for cross-gain modulation (XGM) wavelength converter, through simulation. The gain clamping effect of semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), which is caused by CW holding beam injected into SOA, was used to obtain the accurate optical gain and phase conditions for SOA's in 2R limiter circuit. XGM wavelength converter with the proposed 2R limiter circuit provides higher extinction ratio (ER) as well as more enhanced operation speed than any other wavelength converter. Our numerical results show that after the wavelength-converted signal from XGM wavelength converter passed the 2R limiter circuit, it was re-inverted with the improved ER of 30 dB at 5 Gb/s. In case of high-speed operation, great enhancement to decrease power penalty of about 12 dB was shown at 10 Gb/s.

    Recently, dielectric lens antennas are paid attentions in ITS applications. Many lens shape designing methods were already developed. And electrical performances were estimated through a ray tracing method. Here, arbitral lens shapes were expressed by a system of power series. In the case of ray tracing, time-consuming three-coordinate root-finder programs were needed to find intersection points of rays on the lens surfaces. In order to calculate complicated structures such as zoned lenses and complicated rays such as multiple reflections between lens surfaces, simple ray tracing methods are requested. In this paper, a simple ray tracing method that utilizes directly designed discrete points of lens surfaces is developed. In this method, a refracted ray is automatically determined for a given incident ray. As for an intersecting point of a lens surface for an outgoing ray, the nearest point to the refracted vector is found out by employing a simple searching procedure. This method is time-saving compared to the previous three-coordinate root-finding program. Through calculated results of focal points and radiation patterns in wide angle beam steering, effectiveness of a developed method is ensured. Application of the developed ray tracing method of complicated multiple reflections are studied. Reflecting points are found out speedily by the same searching procedure. A calculated example of doubly reflected rays is obtained. Through comparing calculated and measured results of wide angle radiation patterns, effectiveness of a developed method is ensured.

  • Synchronized Mobile Multicast Support for Real-Time Multimedia Services

    In this paper, we propose the Synchronized Mobile Multicast (SMM) scheme for the real-time multimedia service to achieve three most important characteristics that the traditional Home Subscription (HS) and Remote Subscription (RS) mobile schemes cannot support. First, the SMM scheme supports the scalable one-to-many and many-to-many synchronized multimedia multicast on mobile IP networks to achieves seamless playback of continuous media streams even when both the mobile sender and receivers handoff simultaneously. Second, it analyzes the minimal buffer requirements of the mobile sender, the core router, the foreign agents and the mobile receivers in the multicast tree and formulates the initial playback delay within a handoff Guarantee Region (GR). Further, combined with the fine granularity scalability (FGS) encoding approach in the MPEG-4 standard, the SMM scheme achieves superior multimedia QoS guarantees and unlimited numbers of handoffs of the mobile sender and receivers only at the cost of degraded video quality for a short period after handoff with minimal extra bandwidth.

    Integrated implementation of RF front-end components has been shown to posses many benefits. Furthermore, it presents a new way of approaching RF design. This paper will discuss the recent developments by the author's group in the field of RF front-end technology. This will include stand-alone RF front-end components such as a self-heterodyne mixer as well as more functional front-end circuitry such as digital beamformer arrays, retrodirective arrays and an array error calibration scheme.

  • Nonlinear Wave Propagation for a Parametric Loudspeaker

    A directional audible sound can be generated by amplitude-modulated (AM) into ultrasound wave from a parametric array. To synthesize audio signals produced by the self-demodulation effect of the AM sound wave, a quasi-linear analytical solution, which describes the nonlinear wave propagation, is developed for fast numerical evaluation. The radiated sound field is expressed as the superposition of Gaussian Beams. Numerical results are presented for a rectangular parametric loudspeaker, which are in good agreement with the experimental data published previously.

  • An Enhanced SAIDA: Stream Authentication with High Verification Probability and Low Computation Cost

    In this letter, we present an efficient stream authentication scheme that is an improvement of SAIDA. It is shown that under the same communication overhead its verification probability is higher than that of SAIDA. Moreover, its computation cost is lower than that of SAIDA.

    This paper proposes the joint beamforming space-time block coding (JBSTBC) scheme for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems. To enhance the order of spatial diversity in presence of deteriorate fading correlations as well as inter-substream interferences, the proposed JBSTBC method employs joint eigen-beamforming technique together with the block-ordered layered detector (BOLD) for MIMO-STBC. In order to confirm the superiority of the proposed JBSTBC method, computer simulations are conducted in highly correlated fading situations while providing detailed mathematical derivations for clarifying functionality of the proposed scheme.

    In this paper, we propose a set of broadcast streaming protocols designed for unidirectional radio channels. Considering the limited size and implementation overhead on a mobile terminal, the proposed protocol set is almost compliant with the current mobile streaming protocols, i.e. 3GPP PSS (Packet-switched Streaming Service), except for that the proposed protocols are designed to work on a unidirectional downlink channel. This protocol set enables flexible layout rendering by SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) in combination with SDP (Session Description Protocol), and reliable and synchronized static media (including still image and text) delivery by RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) carousel. We present the prototype of this protocol set and measure its performance of video quality and waiting time for video presentation through a W-CDMA radio channel emulator and header compression nodes. From the experimental results, we show 1) trade-off between video quality and waiting time, 2) advantage and disadvantage of header compression, 3) effectiveness of synchronized transmission of SDP, SMIL, and I-frames of video objects, and 4) reliability of RTP-carousel. This protocol set is applicable to 3G MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service) streaming service.

  • The Impact of Smart Antenna Characteristics on Network Throughput and Channel Model BER: A Review

    Unlike most of the previous work for smart antennas that covered each area individually (antenna-array design, signal processing and communications algorithms and network throughput), this paper may be considered as a review of comprehensive effort on smart antennas that examines and integrates antenna array design, the development of signal processing algorithms (for angle of arrival estimation and adaptive beamforming), strategies for combating fading, and the impact on the network throughput. In particular, this study considers problems dealing with the impact of the antenna design on the network throughput. In addition, fading channels and tradeoffs between diversity combining and adaptive beamforming are examined as well as channel coding to improve the system performance.
