To support video streaming over the current Internet, a media server usually needs to perform adaptive streaming in combination with congestion control. While existing streaming schemes are mainly designed for particular congestion algorithms and rate shaping techniques, this paper proposes a general buffer-driven adaptive streaming scheme based on control theory. Our scheme can be applied in combination with different congestion control algorithms and different rate shaping (and source coding) techniques. It is also amenable to analysis and easy to implement. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme gives satisfactory video quality under various Internet conditions while fully utilizing the available network bandwidth.

Transmission characteristics of a high permittivity NRD guide were investigated. A preferable operating mode of the high permittivity NRD guide was newly identified and the wide bandwidth and low loss nature of the millimeter-wave region were observed. Moreover, a technique for construction of a millimeter-wave antenna was developed based on the high permittivity NRD guide. The novelty of the present technique lies in the use of a simple radiator, which consists of a tapered dielectric strip of simple structure which has good compatibility with millimeter wave integrated circuits. Since this radiator has a broad radiation pattern, a new type of antenna compatible with millimeter-wave integrated circuits for marine radar use was fabricated by locating the radiator at the focal point of a cylindrical parabolic reflector. Suitable beam patterns with half-power beam widths of 4in the azimuth plane and 38in the elevation plane can be obtained at 35 GHz.

This paper describes an analytical method to estimate the amount of interference in multibeam non-geostationary satellite systems. The performance of CDMA is compared with that of FDMA (or TDMA) by employing the maximum acceptable number of users per cell in uplink as a measure. Numerical examples shows that the maximum acceptable number of users in FDMA (or TDMA) systems varies according to the altitude of the satellites, while the performance is insensitive to the altitude in CDMA systems. Then, it is found that the superior multiple access scheme depends on the altitude of the satellite.

      Page(s):
    344-351

This paper presents a beamspace-time transmit diversity scheme that uses a space-time block code (STBC) and a fixed multi-beam transmit array with low sidelobes for time-domain spreading orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing code-division multiplexing (OFDM-CDM) downlink transmission. The scheme assigns space-time-coded signals to a pair of neighboring beams via closed-loop beam selection. Time-domain spreading provides non-frequency selectivity in each spreading region, which makes it possible for multiple STBCs to share any beam and to be decoded after despreading. Simulation results demonstrated that multiple transmit beams and multiple receive antennas provide large beam gains and/or a high order of diversity gains. In addition, the proposed scheme spatially separates users by beam and thus alleviates multi-user interference.

This paper presents architecture design, FPGA implementation, and measurement results of a real-time signal processing circuit for WCDMA uplink baseband receiver. To enhance uplink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) performance, a four-element antenna array and a four-finger Rake combiner are integrated in the proposed receiver. Moreover, a low-complexity beamforming architecture using a correlator-based beam searcher, a decision-directed carrier synchronization loop, and a matched-filter based channel estimator is also designed. Simulations are based on the standard Doppler-fading scalar channel models provided by 3GPP and an extension to vector channel models that specify angle of arrival for each path is also made for beamformer simulation. Simulation and hardware emulation results show that the proposed architecture meets the specified requirements. In addition, this architecture, with its correlator-based beamformer weights, achieves such performance improvement with relatively low hardware complexity.

Adaptive beamforming, using the Conjugate Gradient Normal Equation Residual problem, is applied to a base station array, in the UTRA-TDD up-link. A Wideband Directional Channel Model is used, characterising specific micro-cell, street-type scenarios. These differ in the number of mobile terminals, grouped and placed along the street axis, and on their distances to the base station. Time- and angle-of-arrival spreads, and on-the-air interference content are the main parameters inherently varied and analysed. The average beamforming gain and signal-to-noise ratio are evaluated, also varying the number of array elements. The high number of arriving correlated and closely correlated signals, together with the composed nature of the correlation matrix in the algorithm's cost function, result in that other than the MMSE solutions may lead to the best interference suppression, for the tested scenarios. Among the several weighted interfering power components, the most relevant is due to the delayed signals from all the other links. The combination of the number of arriving orthogonal codes, time-of-arrival and angle-of-arrival spreads condition beamforming performance: the number of array elements affect performance, depending on the mobile terminal distance to the base station, and on the number of active links; for short distances and large number of users, larger time-of-arrival spread degrades beamformer performance, over the opposing effect of angle-of-arrival spread; the number of active users affects beamforming gain especially in the case that delay spreads are larger, i.e., for shorter mobile terminal distances to the base station.

Using eigenstructure approach to form interference canceler is very sensitive to pointing error, especially when the interference number is overestimated. This Letter presents an effective technique to correct the pointing error by the projection matrix of noise subspace. Based on the corrected steering angle, a proper blocking matrix of the eigenstructure interference canceler can be obtained to suppress the leakage of desired signal. Therefore, signal cancellation does not occur, even the interference number is overestimated in constructing the interference subspace.

In this paper, we propose a new resource management scheme for multiple video stream transmission in a wireless environment. The proposed scheme adaptively determines transmission parameters such as the number of assigned time slots, modulation format, and forward error correction (FEC) code rate according to the required bit rate and error sensitivity of the video stream as well as the channel state. The computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme drastically improves the image quality degradation due to channel errors.

A practical EB-testing-pad method, that enables higher observability of multilevel wiring LSIs without any increase of chip size, has been evaluated by using actual 0.25-µm SIMOX/CMOS devices. First, an 80k-gate logic LSI with testing pads was developed, and it was proved that observability improves from 17% to 87%. Next, two kinds of gate-chain TEGs (test element groups), with and without testing pads was developed to investigate the influence of testing pads on gate delay. It was found that the circuit delay increase due to the pads is very small, less than 2.7%. It was also found that capacitances from neighboring wires will increase only by at most 3% due to the testing pads. Thus, the testing pad method has been proved to be extremely effective in improving observability without any overhead in design.

This paper deals with a mathematical formulation of the scattering from a periodic surface with finite extent. In a previous paper the scattered wave was shown to be represented by an extended Floquet form by use of the periodic nature of the surface. This paper gives a new interpretation of the extended Floquet form, which is understood as a sum of diffraction beams with diffraction orders. Then, the power flow of each diffraction beam and the relative power of diffraction are introduced. Next, on the basis of a physical assumption such that the wave scattering takes place only from the corrugated part of the surface, the amplitude functions are represented by the sampling theorem with unknown sample sequence. From the Dirichlet boundary condition, an equation for the sample sequence is derived and solved numerically to calculate the scattering cross section and optical theorem. Discussions are given on a hypothesis such that the relative power of diffracted beam becomes almost independent of the width of surface corrugation.

A space-time (ST) receiver is proposed for multiple access interference (MAI) and narrowband interference (NBI) suppression, and multipath diversity reception in wireless multi-carrier CDMA communications incorporating antenna arrays. The scheme involves three stages. First, an adaptive matched filter is attached to each finger at each antenna to combat the MAI. Second, an adaptive beamformer is constructed for each finger which provides effective reception of the signal of interest (SOI) and suppression of time-varying NBI. Finally, beamformer output data from different fingers are combined to capture the signal multipath components coherently. The proposed ST receiver is shown to perform reliably under strong interference, and outperform the ST MMSE receiver with pilot symbols aided channel estimation.

For base station antenna array systems with time-division-duplex (TDD) mode, downlink channel responses are equal to uplink channel responses if the duplexing time is small, thus it is often believed that TDD mode simplies downlink beamforming problem as uplink weights can be applied for downlink directly. In this letter, we show that for TDD DS-CDMA systems, even though uplink and downlink channel responses are equal, optimal uplink weights are no longer equal to the optimal downlink ones due to asynchronous property in uplink and synchronous property in downlink, as well as different data rate traffic and QoS requirements. Computer simulations show that for asymmetric traffic, if uplink weights are used for downlink directly, downlink system capacity is less than 50% of that with optimal downlink weights.

This paper investigates the optimum adaptive antenna array beam forming (AAA-BF) configuration considering the diversity effect provided by transmit diversity (TD) in a multipath fading channel in the W-CDMA forward link. Computer simulation results show that the required transmit signal energy per bit-to-background noise power spectrum density ratio (Eb/N0) at the average block error rate (BLER) of 10-2 using AAA-BF coupled with TD is decreased by approximately 1.0 dB compared to that of AAA-BF assuming the identical number of total antennas when the capacity, i.e., the number of simultaneously accommodated users with the transmission power proportional to the symbol rate, normalized by processing gain, Pg, is below approximately 20%. However, we find that in an interference-limited channel, when the capacity normalized by Pg is above approximately 30%, AAA-BF employing all antennas accommodates a larger capacity compared to AAA-BF coupled with TD because of a sufficient interference suppression effect due to a much narrower beam width despite the absence of the antenna diversity effect. This paper also elucidates in a multi-cell model that AAA-BF employing all antennas can accommodate approximately 1.5 times more users with the average BLER of 10-2 and with the outage probability of 5%, compared to the case with AAA-BF coupled with TD, when the total number of antennas is 8.

We design a four-reflector offset antenna satisfying the cross-polarization elimination condition and the broadband characteristics condition which consists of one primary horn, three subreflectors and one main reflector. The cross-polarization elimination condition for the four-reflector offset antennas is expressed by the equations of hyperbolas with the coordinate axes of the reciprocal of equivalent focal lengths. The configurations of the reflector system are derived simply from the graphical representation because four-reflector offset antennas satisfying these relationships exist on the hyperbolas with the coordinate axes of the reciprocal of equivalent focal lengths. Furthermore, we clarified that the derived condition for having planar phase front applying the broadband characteristics condition is independent of frequency. An actual design example for the four-reflector offset antennas satisfying the cross-polarization elimination condition and the condition for having planar phase front, both of which are independent of frequency is shown. The design method using the graphical representation is simpler than that of the tri-reflector offset antennas.

In this paper, a rotman lens of multi-beam feed that can be applied to a car collision avoidance radar is designed using nonradiative dielectric (NRD) guide appropriate to the millimeter wave frequency. For the optimum condition, NRD guide at the transmission lines of input and output ports is designed to obtain low loss, small coupling between the transmission lines, and dominant mode operation. The rotman lens is also optimized so as to minimize sidelobe of array factor. To prevent beam pattern from being distorted, multiple-reflection from sidewall has been eliminated by corrugated sidewall.

Transmit beamforming is a promising way to increase the downlink capacity of wireless networks. Since all users are coupled via their radiation patterns, the beamforming vectors must be optimized along with power control. It is necessary to balance the signal-to-interference levels according to individual QoS requirements. This problem leads back to the minimization of the infinity-norm of a certain vector and has first been studied by Gerlach and Paulraj in [1]. It has been assumed that the optimum solution can be obtained by minimizing the 1-norm instead, thereby leading to a new problem, which is generally easier to handle. The analytical and numerical results in this paper, however, indicate that this conjecture is generally not valid. We characterize the case where the 1-norm solution also solves the infinity-norm problem. In particular, it is shown that for the special case of a 2-user scenario, both optimization problems are indeed equivalent and a closed-form solution can be given. The analytical results provide new insights into the problem of coupled downlink beamforming and offer a useful approach to the design of efficient and reliable algorithms.

We propose two novel blind LMS algorithms, called exponential step size LMS algorithms (ES-LMS), for adaptive array antennas with fast convergence speeds. Both of the proposed algorithms are much better at tracking signal sources than the conventional LMS algorithms. In addition, they require neither spatial knowledge nor reference signals since they use the finite symbol property of digital signal. Computer simulations verify performances of the two proposed algorithms.

A digital circuit technique is proposed to process directly bit-stream signals from analog-to-digital converters based on sigma-delta modulation. Newly developed adder and multiplier are fundamental circuit modules for the processing. Using the fundamental modules and up/down counters, other circuit modules such as divider and square root circuits are also realized. The signal processors built of the modules have advantages over multi-bit Nyquist rate processors in circuit scale by the following two distinct features: First, single-bit/multi-bit converters are not needed at the inputs of the processors because the arithmetic modules directly process bit-stream signals. Secondly, the arithmetic modules consist of small number of logic gates. As an application of the technique to digital signal processing for communications, a QPSK demodulator is presented. The demodulator is structured with 40% of logic gates consumed by an equivalent multi-bit demodulator.

The electronically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR) antenna is one kind of the parasitic elements based single-port output antennas with several variable reactances. It performs analog aerial beamforming and none of the signals on its passive elements can be observed. This fact and one that is more important--the nonlinear dependence of the output of the antenna from adjustable reactances--makes the problem substantially new and not resolvable by means of conventional adaptive array beamforming techniques. A novel approach based on stochastic approximation theory is proposed for the adaptive beamforming of the ESPAR antenna as a nonlinear spatial filter by variable parameters, thus forming both beam and nulls. Two learning rate schedule were examined about output SINR, stability, convergence, misadjustment, noise effect, bias term, etc., and the optimal one was proposed. Further development was traced. Our theoretic study, simulation results and performance analysis show that the ESPAR antenna can be controlled effectively, has strong potential for use in mobile terminals and seems to be very perspective.
