  • Multi-Code Multi-Carrier CDMA Modulation with Adaptive Bit-Loading for VDSL Modems

    This paper presents a new modulation scheme for Very-High Speed Digital Subscriber Lines (VDSL) modem, featuring a Multi-Code Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC2-CDMA) modulation. The system takes advantage from both the CDMA modulation and the Multi-Carrier transmission, and furthermore the channel throughput is increased adopting a multi-code approach. Starting from an overview of this novel scheme, encompassing the transmitter, channel and receiver description, a brief review of the equalization techniques is also considered and a proper bit-loading algorithm is derived to find out the achievable overall channel rate. The aim of this paper, besides introducing this novel scheme, is to demonstrate its suitability for a VDSL environment, where the achievable channel rate represents a real challenge. By means of a further optimisation, a general improvement of the system performance with respect to the standardized Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation is also demonstrated.

  • Further Results on Passification of Non-square Linear Systems Using an Input-Dimensional Compensator

    Passification of a non-square linear system is considered by using a parallel feedforward compensator (PFC) and a squaring gain matrix. In contrast to the previous result, a technical assumption is removed by modifying the structure of the PFC. As a result, the broader class of non-square systems can be made passive by the proposed design method. Using the static output feedback (SOF) algorithms, the input-dimensional PFC and the squaring matrix can be designed systematically. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by practical system examples in the control literature.

    A problem of estimating biopotential sources in the brain based on EEG signals observed on the scalp is known as an important inverse problem of electrophysiology. Usually there is no closed-form solution for this problem and it requires iterative techniques such as the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Considering the nonlinear properties of inverse problem, and signal to noise ratio inherent in EEG signals, a back propagation neural network has been recently proposed as a solution. In this paper, we investigated the properties of neural networks and its localization accuracy for single dipole source localization. Based on the results of extensive studies, we concluded the neural networks are highly feasible in single-source localization with a small number of electrodes (18 electrodes), also examined the usefulness of this method for clinical application with a case of epilepsy.

  • A Training Method of Average Voice Model for HMM-Based Speech Synthesis

    This paper describes a new training method of average voice model for speech synthesis in which arbitrary speaker's voice is generated based on speaker adaptation. When the amount of training data is limited, the distributions of average voice model often have bias depending on speaker and/or gender and this will degrade the quality of synthetic speech. In the proposed method, to reduce the influence of speaker dependence, we incorporate a context clustering technique called shared decision tree context clustering and speaker adaptive training into the training procedure of average voice model. From the results of subjective tests, we show that the average voice model trained using the proposed method generates more natural sounding speech than the conventional average voice model. Moreover, it is shown that voice characteristics and prosodic features of synthetic speech generated from the adapted model using the proposed method are closer to the target speaker than the conventional method.

  • Application of a Frequency Domain Processing Technique to the Simultaneous Equations Method

    This paper presents a frequency domain simultaneous equations method capable of automatically recovering noise reduction effect degraded by secondary path changes. The simultaneous equations method has been studied, first in time domain. Accordingly to the study, in the time domain, the simultaneous equations method requires an additional filter and a system identification circuit used for transforming the solution of the simultaneous equations into the coefficients of noise control filter, which increase the processing cost. To reduce the processing cost, this paper studies on the application of a frequency domain processing technique, the cross spectrum method, to the simultaneous equations method. By directly applying the equation defining the cross spectrum method to the solution, the additional filter becomes unnecessary. In addition, the system identification circuit is replaced with the inverse Fourier transform. Thereby, the processing cost drastically decreases. This paper also presents simulation results to confirm that the proposed method can automatically recover the noise reduction effect degraded by a path change and provides much higher convergence speed than that of the filtered-x NLMS algorithm with the perfectly modeled secondary path filter.

    A novel RF CMOS high Q-value active inductor is proposed in this work by using simple cascode RC feedback compensation technique. The performance of this active inductor has maximum Q-value about 1.2E6, inductance value from 3.5 nH to 4.5 nH and 3E-5Ω of minimum total equivalent loss, in the range of 1.2 GHz to 2 GHz.

    This paper investigates based on laboratory experiments the multiuser interference suppression effect of the coherent adaptive antenna array diversity (CAAAD) receiver employing an optical fiber feeder in the intermediate frequency (IF) stage, aiming at the practical use of adaptive antenna array beam forming techniques based on the W-CDMA air interface. We employed a configuration in which the optical fiber conversion, i.e., electrical-to-optical (E/O) conversion (vice versa (O/E)), is performed on a received signal amplified by an automatic gain control (AGC) amplifier in the IF stage, to abate the impact of the noise component generated by the E/O (O/E) converters. We first show by computer simulation the superiority of the optical fiber conversion in the IF stage to that in the radio frequency (RF) stage based on the achievable bit error rate (BER) performance. Furthermore, experimental results elucidate that the loss in the required transmit signal energy per bit-to-background noise power spectrum density ratio (Eb/N0) of the implemented CAAAD receiver at the average BER of 10-3 employing the optical fiber feeders in the IF stage compared to that with coaxial cables is within a mere 0.2 dB (six antennas, three users, two-path Rayleigh fading channel model, and the ratio of the target signal energy per bit-to-interference power spectrum density ratio (Eb/I0) of the desired user to that of the interfering users for fast transmission power control (TPC) is ΔEb/I0=-15 dB).

    This paper presents laboratory experimental results on the throughput performance when key techniques such as adaptive modulation and channel coding (AMC) and hybrid automatic repeat request (ARQ) with packet combining are employed by an implemented transceiver based on the High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) air interface in a multipath fading channel. In AMC operation, we applied four modulation and coding schemes (MCSs): MCS1 (QPSK data modulation with the channel coding rate of R = 1/2, hereafter simply referred to as QPSK with R = 1/2), MCS2 (QPSK with R = 3/4), MCS3 (16 QAM with R = 1/2), and MCS4 (16 QAM with R = 3/4). The results elucidate that a peak average throughput above 5.0 Mbps is achieved at the average received signal energy per chip-to-background noise power spectrum density ratio (Ec/N0) of more than approximately 20 dB in a one-path fading channel; nevertheless, the achievable peak throughput becomes approximately 2.9 (2.6) Mbps due to severe multipath interference (MPI) in a two-path fading channel where the average signal power of the second path is 6 (3) dB lower than that of the first path, assuming nine-code-channel multiplexing with the fading maximum Doppler frequency of fD = 5 Hz. Furthermore, we clarify that although the throughput performance employing Type-II hybrid ARQ (i.e., Incremental redundancy) is almost the same as that employing Type-I hybrid ARQ with packet combining (i.e., Chase combining) in a two-path fading channel, Incremental redundancy exhibits superiority over Chase combing in a one-path fading channel for a high Doppler frequency channel such as fD = 80 Hz.

  • Spatial Optical Signal Processing Beam Forming Network for 2-Dimensional Beam Steering

    In this paper, an optical signal processing beam forming network (BFN) for two-dimensional (2-D) beam steering is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Two lightwaves, called the signal and reference, are both Fourier transformed, combined, and then down-converted into RF signals using an optical heterodyne technique. A simple combination of orthogonal one-dimensional position scannings of the signal and reference lightwaves generates RF signals with phase distributions for 2-D beam steering. The system operation and optical losses are theoretically analyzed. Using graded index fiber (GIF) lensed single mode fibers (SMFs), total optical loss of the sampling fiber array is evaluated to be 4.5 dB from the fiber to fiber loss measurements. Using an experimental optical signal processing BFN at 25 GHz, 2-D beam steering is demonstrated at 0, 10, 20, and 30through the measured amplitudes and phases of RF signals for 16 position sets of the signal and reference fibers. The proposed method has the potential to provide ultra-fast beam scanning by utilizing optical switching technologies.

    This paper presents a new asynchronous multiplier. The original array structure is divided into two asymmetric arrays, called an upper array and a lower array. For the lower array, Left to Right scheme is applied to take advantage of a fast computation and low power consumption as well. Simulation results show that the proposed multiplier has 40% of performance improvement with a relatively lower power consumption. The multiplier has been implemented in a CMOS 0.35 µm technology and proved functionally correct.

    This paper describes a design of a Carry Propagation Free Adder/Subtracter (CPFA/S) VLSI using the Adiabatic Dynamic CMOS Logic (ADCL) circuit technology. Using a PSPICE simulator, energy dissipation of the ADCL 1 bit CPFA/S is compared with that of the CMOS 1 bit CPFA/S. As a result, energy dissipation of the proposed ADCL circuits is about 1/3 as high as that of the CMOS circuits. The transistors count, propagation-delay time and energy dissipation of the ADCL 4 bit CPFA/S are compared with those of the ADCL 4 bit Ripple Carry Adder/Subtracter (RCA/S). The transistors count and propagation-delay time are found to be reduced by 7.02% and 57.1%, respectively. Also, energy dissipation is found to be reduced by 78.4%. Circuit operation and performance are evaluated using a chain of the ADCL 1 bit CPFA/S fabricated in a 1.2 µm CMOS process. The experimental results show that addition and subtraction are operated with clock frequencies up to about 1 MHz. In addition, the total power dissipation of the ADCL 1 bit CPFA/S is 28.7 µW including the power supply.

    In this paper, we analyze wavelet-based coding in a rate-distortion (R-D) sense by using Laplacian and Markov models and verify the results with the performance of the typical embedded coders, EZW and SPIHT, and the non-embedded coder implemented here. Laplacian represents the probability density function (pdf) of wavelet coefficients and Markov statistical dependency within and among subbands. The models allow us to easily understand the behavior of a thresholding and quantization part and a lossless coding part and associate the embedded coders with the nonembedded coder, which is the point the paper approaches. The analytic results are shown to coincide well with the actual coding results.

  • Improved Phoneme-History-Dependent Search Method for Large-Vocabulary Continuous-Speech Recognition

    This paper presents an improved phoneme-history-dependent (PHD) search algorithm. This method is an optimum algorithm under the assumption that the starting time of a recognized word depends on only a few preceding phonemes (phoneme history). The computational cost and the number of recognition errors can be reduced if the phoneme-history-dependent search uses re-selection of the preceding word and an appropriate length of phoneme histories. These improvements increase the speed of decoding and help to ensure that the resulting word graph has the correct word sequence. In a 65k-word domain-independent Japanese read-speech dictation task and 1000-word spontaneous-speech airline-ticket-reservation task, the improved PHD search was 1.2-1.8 times faster than a traditional word-dependent search under the condition of equal word accuracy. The improved search reduced the number of errors by a maximum of 21% under the condition of equal processing time. The results also show that our search can generate more compact and accurate word graphs than those of the original PHD search method. In addition, we investigated the optimum length of the phoneme history in the search.

  • High Speed LAPS System for pH Image Using Line Scanning with a Chopping Wheel

    We propose a new detection method of a 2-dimensional pH image to measure the pH distribution of test materials by illuminating a frequency modulated light to LAPS using a chopping wheel. It could simultaneously measure signals in one line by applying a modulated light with a different frequency for each pixel, using a chopping wheel for modulating the frequency, and calculating an amplitude with respect to a frequency component by the light source. To test the proposed method, we implement a chopping wheel in consideration of a LAPS's characteristic, and reconstructed an image by frequency analysis using the implemented chopping wheel and 4 mm test pattern image. As a result, we verified that the proposed method using the chopping wheel was able to detect 30 times faster a 3030 pixels pH image having a PSNR more than 22 dB above the conventional method.

  • Fuzzy Direct Torque Control for Dual-Three-Phase Induction Motor

    In this paper, a novel direct torque control (DTC) for a dual-three-phase induction motor(DTPIM) is presented. A rule-based optimum selection scheme for the space voltage vector is proposed. A fast torque response with low ripples of torque and flux is achieved. To further reduce the ripple of torque and stator flux, a fuzzy logic estimator for the duty ratio is developed, so that the average effective voltage on the motor can be flexibly changed within the sampling period. The simulation results clearly demonstrate precise control of the stator flux and torque with the new DTC method and a better steady state performance with the proposed fuzzy logic technique.

  • Self-Organizing Neural Network-Based Analysis of Electrostatic Discharge for Electromagnetic Interference Assessment

    This paper describes an analysis of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) aspects of electrostatic discharge (ESD), which sometimes causes serious damage to electrical systems. To classify EMI-related properties resulting from ESD events, we used a self-organizing neural network, which can map high-dimensional data into simple geometric relationships on a low-dimensional display. Also, to clarify the effect of a high-speed moving discharge, we generated one-shot discharges repeatedly and measured the ESD current in the time domain to obtain its EMI-related characteristics of this phenomenon. Based on the measured data, we examined several differential properties of ESD waveforms including the maximum amplitude and energy level, and analyzed these multi-dimensional data using the self-organizing neural network scheme. The results showed that the high-speed moving discharges can increase the maximum amplitude, relative energy, and entropy of ESD events, and that the positioning of the EMI level of each ESD event can be effectively visualized in a two-dimensional space.

    In this paper, we first investigate the characteristics of movie contents over the Internet. As in the previous studies, we found the lognormal-distribution well fits the distribution of file size for the whole set of general movie contents. When we specifically focus on the subset that consists of movie trailers, however, it shows different distribution from the lognormal-distribution. Our analysis shows it is similar to an exponential-distribution. We here assume that movie trailers are one of the relevant contents for Contents Delivery Networks (CDN) or Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file exchange communities. We further studies the relationship between playing duration and file size for the movie trailers and we did not find any linear correlation among them. We next consider bandwidth requirements to retrieve movie trailer contents. Our objective is to make it possible for user to view the contents in real-time. Many previous studies investigate bandwidth requirement based only on the file size distribution. In this paper, we analyze the traffic design criteria for CDN or P2P by taking into account both of the results for the file size distribution and the relationship between playing duration and file size for movie trailers. Simulation studies reveal the impact for the bandwidth requirement.

  • Impedance Characteristic Analysis of an Axial Slot Antenna on a Sectoral Cylindrical Cavity Excited by a Probe Using Method of Moments

    This paper presents the analysis of the impedance characteristics of a sectoral cylindrical cavity-backed axial slot antenna excited by a probe. The integral equations are derived based on boundary conditions of the proposed structure and they are expressed in terms of dyadic Green functions and unknown current densities. The dyadic Green functions are obtained by using the eigenfunction expansion method together with application of scattering superposition techniques. The unknown current densities are solved by the Method of Moments. The input impedance is subsequently determined from the unknown electric current density at the probe. Numerical results of input impedance and return loss are demonstrated as functions of frequency for various parameters such as cavity length, cavity radius ratio, slot location in φ direction, slot length and probe length. Calculated results are validated by the measurements. At the operating frequency, it is found that the result is sufficiently accurate. The results from this study are very useful for the design of a sectoral cylindrical cavity-backed axial slot array antenna excited by a probe with omnidirectional beam radiation.

  • Robust Control with Adaptive Compensation Input for Linear Uncertain Systems

    This paper deals with a design problem of a robust controller which achieves not only robust stability but also a performance robustness for linear systems with structured uncertainties satisfying matching condition. The performance robustness means that comparing the transient behavior of the uncertain system with a desired one generated by the nominal system, the deterioration of control performance is suppressed. In this approach, the control law consists of a state feedback with the fixed gain designed by using the nominal system, a state feedback with an adaptive gain determined by a parameter adjustment law and a compensation input for the purpose of keeping transient behavior as closely as possible to the desirable one. We show the parameter adjustment law in order to guarantee robust stability and that the condition for the existence of the compensation input is equivalent to the Riccati equation for the standard linear quadratic control problem. Finally, numerical examples are presented.

  • A Server Selection Method in Content Delivery Networks

    Load balancing among multiple mirror servers located at distributed positions in the network is a key technique for content delivery services. For bandwidth allocated services, we consider how to select a suitable server from several candidates containing the same content at the time of a request. We propose limiting the candidates in advance and selecting a server from the limited set of servers in a round-robin fashion. The server sets that minimize the variance of the link load are derived using a greedy method for a given network topology and service demand. Through numerical evaluation, we demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to previous methods.
