ARM chips with low energy consumption and low-cost investment have been rapidly applied to smart office and smart entertainment including cloud mobile phones and cloud games. This paper first summarizes key technologies and development status of the above scenarios including CPU, memory, IO hardware virtualization characteristics, ARM hypervisor and container, GPU virtualization, network virtualization, resource management and remote transmission technologies. Then, in view of the current lack of publicly referenced ARM cloud constructing solutions, this paper proposes and constructs an implementation framework for building an ARM cloud, and successively focuses on the formal definition of virtualization framework, Android container system and resource quota management methods, GPU virtualization based on API remoting and GPU pass-through, and the remote transmission technology. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed model and corresponding component implementation methods are effective, especially, the pass-through mode for virtualizing GPU resources has higher performance and higher parallelism.

High power dissipation during scan test often causes undue yield loss, especially for low-power circuits. One major reason is that the resulting IR-drop in shift mode may corrupt test data. A common approach to solving this problem is partial-shift, in which multiple scan chains are formed and only one group of scan chains is shifted at a time. However, existing partial-shift based methods suffer from two major problems: (1) their IR-drop estimation is not accurate enough or computationally too expensive to be done for each shift cycle; (2) partial-shift is hence applied to all shift cycles, resulting in long test time. This paper addresses these two problems with a novel IR-drop-aware scan shift method, featuring: (1) Cycle-based IR-Drop Estimation (CIDE) supported by a GPU-accelerated dynamic power simulator to quickly find potential shift cycles with excessive peak IR-drop; (2) a scan shift scheduling method that generates a scan chain grouping targeted for each considered shift cycle to reduce the impact on test time. Experiments on ITC'99 benchmark circuits show that: (1) the CIDE is computationally feasible; (2) the proposed scan shift schedule can achieve a global peak IR-drop reduction of up to 47%. Its scheduling efficiency is 58.4% higher than that of an existing typical method on average, which means our method has less test time.

GPUs have become the dominant computing units to meet the need of high performance in various computational fields. But the long operation latency causes the underutilization of on-chip computing resources, resulting in performance degradation when running parallel tasks on GPUs. A good warp scheduling strategy is an effective solution to hide latency and improve resource utilization. However, most current warp scheduling algorithms on GPUs ignore the ability of long operations to hide latency. In this paper, we propose a long-operation-first warp scheduling algorithm, LFWS, for GPU platforms. The LFWS filters warps in the ready state to a ready queue and updates the queue in time according to changes in the status of the warp. The LFWS divides the warps in the ready queue into long and short operation groups based on the type of operations in their instruction buffers, and it gives higher priority to the long-operating warp in the ready queue. This can effectively use the long operations to hide some of the latency from each other and enhance the system's ability to hide the latency. To verify the effectiveness of the LFWS, we implement the LFWS algorithm on a simulation platform GPGPU-Sim. Experiments are conducted over various CUDA applications to evaluate the performance of LFWS algorithm, compared with other five warp scheduling algorithms. The results show that the LFWS algorithm achieves an average performance improvement of 8.01% and 5.09%, respectively, over three traditional and two novel warp scheduling algorithms, effectively improving computational resource utilization on GPU.

This letter proposes a novel lightweight deep learning object detector named LW-YOLOv4-tiny, which incorporates the convolution block feature addition module (CBFAM). The novelty of LW-YOLOv4-tiny is the use of channel-wise convolution and element-wise addition in the CBFAM instead of utilizing the concatenation of different feature maps. The model size and computation requirement are reduced by up to 16.9 Mbytes, 5.4 billion FLOPs (BFLOPS), and 11.3 FPS, which is 31.9%, 22.8%, and 30% smaller and faster than the most recent version of YOLOv4-tiny. From the MSCOCO2017 and PASCAL VOC2012 benchmarks, LW-YOLOv4-tiny achieved 40.2% and 69.3% mAP, respectively.

The hardness of the syndrome decoding problem (SDP) is the primary evidence for the security of code-based cryptosystems, which are one of the finalists in a project to standardize post-quantum cryptography conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST-PQC). Information set decoding (ISD) is a general term for algorithms that solve SDP efficiently. In this paper, we conducted a concrete analysis of the time complexity of the latest ISD algorithms under the limitation of memory using the syndrome decoding estimator proposed by Esser et al. As a result, we present that theoretically nonoptimal ISDs, such as May-Meurer-Thomae (MMT) and May-Ozerov, have lower time complexity than other ISDs in some actual SDP instances. Based on these facts, we further studied the possibility of multiple parallelization for these ISDs and proposed the first GPU algorithm for MMT, the multiparallel MMT algorithm. In the experiments, we show that the multiparallel MMT algorithm is faster than existing ISD algorithms. In addition, we report the first successful attempts to solve the 510-, 530-, 540- and 550-dimensional SDP instances in the Decoding Challenge contest using the multiparallel MMT.

This letter conducts an in-depth empirical analysis of the influence of various query characteristics on the performance of modern GPU DBMSes. Our analysis reveals that, although they can efficiently process concurrent queries, the GPU DBMSes we consider still should address various performance concerns including n-way joins, aggregates, and selective scans.

The efficient implementation strategy for speeding up high-quality clustering algorithms is developed on the basis of general purpose graphic processing units (GPGPUs) in this work. Among various clustering algorithms, a sophisticated Gaussian mixture model (GMM) by estimating parameters through variational Bayesian (VB) mechanism is conducted due to its superior performances. Since the VB-GMM methodology is computation-hungry, the GPGPU is employed to carry out massive matrix-computations. To efficiently migrate the conventional CPU-oriented schemes of VB-GMM onto GPGPU platforms, an entire migration-flow with thirteen stages is presented in detail. The CPU-GPGPU co-operation scheme, execution re-order, and memory access optimization are proposed for optimizing the GPGPU utilization and maximizing the clustering speed. Five types of real-world applications along with relevant data-sets are introduced for the cross-validation. From the experimental results, the feasibility of implementing VB-GMM algorithm by GPGPU is verified with practical benefits. The proposed GPGPU migration achieves 192x speedup in maximum. Furthermore, it succeeded in identifying the proper number of clusters, which is hardly conducted by the EM-algotihm.

Since deep learning workloads perform a large number of matrix operations on training data, GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) are efficient especially for the training phase. A cluster of computers each of which equips multiple GPUs can significantly accelerate the deep learning workloads. More specifically, a back-propagation algorithm following a gradient descent approach is used for the training. Although the gradient computation is still a major bottleneck of the training, gradient aggregation and optimization impose both communication and computation overheads, which should also be reduced for further shortening the training time. To address this issue, in this paper, multiple GPUs are interconnected with a PCI Express (PCIe) over 10Gbit Ethernet (10GbE) technology. Since these remote GPUs are interconnected with network switches, gradient aggregation and optimizers (e.g., SGD, AdaGrad, Adam, and SMORMS3) are offloaded to FPGA-based 10GbE switches between remote GPUs; thus, the gradient aggregation and parameter optimization are completed in the network. The proposed FPGA-based 10GbE switches with the four optimizers are implemented on NetFPGA-SUME board. Their resource utilizations are increased by PEs for the optimizers, and they consume up to 56% of the resources. Evaluation results using four remote GPUs connected via the proposed FPGA-based switch demonstrate that these optimizers are accelerated by up to 3.0x and 1.25x compared to CPU and GPU implementations, respectively. Also, the gradient aggregation throughput by the FPGA-based switch achieves up to 98.3% of the 10GbE line rate.

In this letter we analyze the economic worth of GPU on analytical processing of GPU-accelerated database management systems (DBMSes). To this end, we conducted rigorous experiments with TPC-H across three popular GPU DBMSes. Consequently, we show that co-processing with CPU and GPU in the GPU DBMSes was cost-effective despite exposed concerns.

Like many processors, GPGPU suffers from memory wall. The traditional solution for this issue is to use efficient schedulers to hide long memory access latency or use data prefetch mech-anism to reduce the latency caused by data transfer. In this paper, we study the instruction fetch stage of GPU's pipeline and analyze the relationship between the capacity of GPU kernel and instruction miss rate. We improve the next line prefetch mechanism to fit the SIMT model of GPU and determine the optimal parameters of prefetch mechanism on GPU through experiments. The experimental result shows that the prefetch mechanism can achieve 12.17% performance improvement on average. Compared with the solution of enlarging I-Cache, prefetch mechanism has the advantages of more beneficiaries and lower cost.
AI (artificial intelligence) has grown at an overwhelming speed for the last decade, to the extent that it has become one of the mainstream tools that drive the advancements in science and technology. Meanwhile, the paradigm of edge computing has emerged as one of the foremost areas in which applications using the AI technology are being most actively researched, due to its potential benefits and impact on today's widespread networked computing environments. In this paper, we evaluate two major entry-level offerings in the state-of-the-art edge device technology, which highlight increased computing power and specialized hardware support for AI applications. We perform a set of deep learning benchmarks on the devices to measure their performance. By comparing the performance with other GPU (graphics processing unit) accelerated systems in different platforms, we assess the computational capability of the modern edge devices featuring a significant amount of hardware parallelism.

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are highly efficient architectures for parallel stencil code; however, the small device (i.e., GPU) memory capacity (several tens of GBs) necessitates the use of out-of-core computation to process excess data. Great programming effort is needed to manually implement efficient out-of-core stencil code. To relieve such programming burdens, directive-based frameworks emerged, such as the pipelined accelerator (PACC); however, they usually lack specific optimizations to reduce data transfer. In this paper, we extend PACC with two data-centric optimizations to address data transfer problems. The first is a direct-mapping scheme that eliminates host (i.e., CPU) buffers, which intermediate between the original data and device buffers. The second is a region-sharing scheme that significantly reduces host-to-device data transfer. The extended PACC was applied to an acoustic wave propagator, automatically extending the length of original serial code 2.3-fold to obtain the out-of-core code. Experimental results revealed that on a Tesla V100 GPU, the generated code ran 41.0, 22.1, and 3.6 times as fast as implementations based on Open Multi-Processing (OpenMP), Unified Memory, and the previous PACC, respectively. The generated code also demonstrated usefulness with small datasets that fit in the device capacity, running 1.3 times as fast as an in-core implementation.

The volume of digital information is growing at an extremely fast pace which, in turn, exacerbates the need of efficient mechanisms to find the presence of a pattern in an input text or a set of input strings. Combining the processing power of Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with matching algorithms seems a natural alternative to speedup the string-matching process. This work proposes a Parallel Rabin-Karp implementation (PRK) that encompasses a fast-parallel prefix-sums algorithm to maximize parallelization and accelerate the matching verification. Given an input text T of length n and p patterns of length m, the proposed implementation finds all occurrences of p in T in O(m+q+n/τ+nm/q) time, where q is a sufficiently large prime number and τ is the available number of threads. Sequential and parallel versions of the PRK have been implemented. Experiments have been executed on p≥1 patterns of length m comprising of m=10, 20, 30 characters which are compared against a text string of length n=227. The results show that the parallel implementation of the PRK algorithm on NVIDIA V100 GPU provides speedup surpassing 372 times when compared to the sequential implementation and speedup of 12.59 times against an OpenMP implementation running on a multi-core server with 128 threads. Compared to another prominent GPU implementation, the PRK implementation attained speedup surpassing 37 times.

Fast computation of singular value decomposition (SVD) is of great interest in various machine learning tasks. Recently, SVD methods based on randomized linear algebra have shown significant speedup in this regime. For processing large-scale data, computing systems with accelerators like GPUs have become the mainstream approach. In those systems, access to the input data dominates the overall process time; therefore, it is needed to design an out-of-core algorithm to dispatch the computation into accelerators. This paper proposes an accurate two-pass randomized SVD, named block randomized SVD (BRSVD), designed for matrices with a slow-decay singular spectrum that is often observed in image data. BRSVD fully utilizes the power of modern computing system architectures and efficiently processes large-scale data in a parallel and out-of-core fashion. Our experiments show that BRSVD effectively moves the performance bottleneck from data transfer to computation, so that outperforms existing randomized SVD methods in terms of speed with retaining similar accuracy.

Blockchain is a distributed ledger system composed of a P2P network and is used for a wide range of applications, such as international remittance, inter-individual transactions, and asset conservation. In Blockchain systems, tamper resistance is enhanced by the property of transaction that cannot be changed or deleted by everyone including the creator of the transaction. However, this property also becomes a problem that unintended transaction created by miss operation or secret key theft cannot be corrected later. Due to this problem, once an illegal transaction such as theft occurs, the damage will expand. To suppress the damage, we need countermeasures, such as detecting illegal transaction at high speed and correcting the transaction before approval. However, anomaly detection in the Blockchain at high speed is computationally heavy, because we need to repeat the detection process using various feature quantities and the feature extractions become overhead. In this paper, to accelerate anomaly detection, we propose to cache transaction information necessary for extracting feature in GPU device memory and perform both feature extraction and anomaly detection in the GPU. We also propose a conditional feature extraction method to reduce computation cost of anomaly detection. We employ anomaly detection using K-means algorithm based on the conditional features. When the number of users is one million and the number of transactions is 100 millions, our proposed method achieves 8.6 times faster than CPU processing method and 2.6 times faster than GPU processing method that does not perform feature extraction on the GPU. In addition, the conditional feature extraction method achieves 1.7 times faster than the unconditional method when the number of users satisfying a given condition is 200 thousands out of one million.

In this paper, we propose an acceleration method for the Held-Karp algorithm that solves the symmetric traveling salesman problem by dynamic programming. The proposed method achieves acceleration with two techniques. First, we locate data-independent subproblems so that the subproblems can be solved in parallel. Second, we reduce the number of subproblems by a meet in the middle (MITM) technique, which computes the optimal path from both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. We show theoretical analysis on the impact of MITM in terms of the time and space complexities. In experiments, we compared the proposed method with a previous method running on a single-core CPU. Experimental results show that the proposed method on an 8-core CPU was 9.5-10.5 times faster than the previous method on a single-core CPU. Moreover, the proposed method on a graphics processing unit (GPU) was 30-40 times faster than that on an 8-core CPU. As a side effect, the proposed method reduced the memory usage by 48%.

We propose a novel compositing pipeline and a dynamic load balancing technique for volume rendering which utilizes a two-layered group structure to achieve effective and scalable load balancing. The technique enables each process to render data from non-contiguous regions of the volume with minimal impact on the total render time. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique by performing a set of experiments on a modern GPU cluster. The experiments show that using the technique results in up to a 35.7% lower worst-case memory usage as compared to a dynamic k-d tree load balancing technique, whilst simultaneously achieving similar or higher render performance. The proposed technique was also able to lower the amount of transferred data during the load balancing stage by up to 72.2%. The technique has the potential to be used in many scenarios where other dynamic load balancing techniques have proved to be inadequate, such as during large-scale visualization.

Real-time 3D players tracking plays an important role in sports analysis, especially for the live services of sports broadcasting, which have a strict limitation on processing time. For these kinds of applications, 3D trajectories of players contribute to high-level game analysis such as tactic analysis and commercial applications such as TV contents. Thus real-time implementation for 3D players tracking is expected. In order to achieve real-time for 60fps videos with high accuracy, (that means the processing time should be less than 16.67ms per frame), the factors that limit the processing time of target algorithm include: 1) Large image area of each player. 2) Repeated processing of multiple players in multiple views. 3) Complex calculation of observation algorithm. To deal with the above challenges, this paper proposes a representative spatial selection and temporal combination based real-time implementation for multi-view volleyball players tracking on the GPU device. First, the representative spatial pixel selection, which detects the pixels that mostly represent one image region to scale down the image spatially, reduces the number of processing pixels. Second, the representative temporal likelihood combination shares observation calculation by using the temporal correlation between images so that the times of complex calculation is reduced. The experiments are based on videos of the Final and Semi-Final Game of 2014 Japan Inter High School Games of Men's Volleyball in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. On the GPU device GeForce GTX 1080Ti, the tracking system achieves real-time on 60fps videos and keeps the tracking accuracy higher than 97%.

The bulk execution of a sequential algorithm is to execute it for many different inputs in turn or at the same time. It is known that the bulk execution of an oblivious sequential algorithm can be implemented to run efficiently on a GPU. The bulk execution supports fine grained bitwise parallelism, allowing it to achieve high acceleration over a straightforward sequential computation. The main contribution of this work is to present a Bitwise Parallel Bulk Computation (BPBC) to accelerate the Smith-Waterman Algorithm (SWA) using the affine gap penalty. Thus, our idea is to convert this computation into a circuit simulation using the BPBC technique to compute multiple instances simultaneously. The proposed BPBC technique for the SWA has been implemented on the GPU and CPU. Experimental results show that the proposed BPBC for the SWA accelerates the computation by over 646 times as compared to a single CPU implementation and by 6.9 times as compared to a multi-core CPU implementation with 160 threads.
Since first introduced in 2008 with the 1.0 specification, OpenCL has steadily evolved over the decade to increase its support for heterogeneous parallel systems. In this paper, we accelerate stochastic simulation of biochemical reaction networks on modern GPUs (graphics processing units) by means of the OpenCL programming language. In implementing the OpenCL version of the stochastic simulation algorithm, we carefully apply its data-parallel execution model to optimize the performance provided by the underlying hardware parallelism of the modern GPUs. To evaluate our OpenCL implementation of the stochastic simulation algorithm, we perform a comparative analysis in terms of the performance using the CPU-based cluster implementation and the NVidia CUDA implementation. In addition to the initial report on the performance of OpenCL on GPUs, we also discuss applicability and programmability of OpenCL in the context of GPU-based scientific computing.
