Honeycomb structures are widely used in aerospace industry because of the lightweight and durable properties they provide. Here we propose to use a honeycomb core as the wave guiding structure in Radial Line Slot Antennas (RLSAs). This paper quantifies the propagation characteristics, especially the loss due to the honeycomb. At 32GHz, by choosing the proper cell size, both good isotropy and reasonably low effective dielectric constants are realized with the honeycomb as a spacer in a radial line waveguide. To estimate the material loss factor, several methods are compared and a factor of about 0.014∼0.018dB/mm is predicted and measured. A fabricated 90cm diameter honeycomb RLSA suffers about a 3.5∼5dB loss, which coincides with the estimates using the predicted loss factor.

A ladder lottery, known as the “Amidakuji” in Japan, is a network with n vertical lines and many horizontal lines each of which connects two consecutive vertical lines. Each ladder lottery corresponds to a permutation. Ladder lotteries are frequently used as natural models in many areas. Given a permutation π, an algorithm to enumerate all ladder lotteries of π with the minimum number of horizontal lines is known. In this paper, given a permutation π and an integer k, we design an algorithm to enumerate all ladder lotteries of π with exactly k horizontal lines.

A 16×16-element corporate-feed waveguide slot array antenna in the 60-GHz band is designed to achieve broadband reflection and high antenna efficiency. The sub-arrays consisting of 2×2-elements are designed to improve the reflection bandwidth by implementing lower Q and triple resonance. The designed antenna is fabricated by diffusion bonding of thin copper plates. A wide reflection bandwidth with VSWR less than 2.0 is obtained over 21.5%, 13.2GHz (54.7-67.8GHz). The measured gain is 32.6dBi and the corresponding antenna efficiency is 76.5%. The broad bandwidth of more than 31.5-dBi gain is realized over 19.2%, 11.9GHz (56.1-68.0GHz). The gain in bandwidth covers the whole of the license-free 60-GHz band (57-66GHz).

MIL-STD-188-220 standard specifies protocols for narrowband and voice-based tactical communication devices. However, the future tactical communication devices require broadband services for accurate command and control. In this letter, the enhancement for MIL-STD-188-220-based systems is proposed for use over wideband channels. Unlike the operation defined in the standard, transmissions in Bump-Slots uses P-Persistence method and give the higher p to stations experiencing longer delays. The proposed method is extensively evaluated and the performance enhancements are proved.

As a promising lamination-loss-free fabrication technique, diffusion bonding of etched thin metal plates is used to realize double-layer waveguide slot antennas. Alternating-phase feed is adopted in this paper to reduce the number of laminated plates to simplify fabrication as well as to reduce cost. A 20 × 20-element double-layer waveguide slot antenna with a bottom partially-corporate feed circuit is designed for 39GHz band operation as an example. The adjacent radiating waveguides as well as the 2 × 2 sub-arrays fed in an alternating-phase manner eliminate the need for complete electrical contact in the top layer. However, the feed circuit in the bottom layer has to be completely diffusion-bonded. These two layers are simply assembled by screws. An antenna laminated by only diffusion bonding is also fabricated and evaluated for comparison. The comparison proved that the simply fabricated antenna is comparable in performance to the fully diffusion-bonded one.

Two channel correlation estimation (CCE) schemes exploiting pilots are presented for an OFDM system with a comb-type pilot pattern under the assumption that there exist virtual subcarriers in the OFDM block. Whereas the first scheme is designed based on the conventional regularized-least square (LS) approach, the second scheme is designed by a newly devised technique based on LS. As the second scheme removes the necessity of computing the matrix inverse by making the minimum eigenvalue of the inversed matrix positive, it leads to reduced implementation complexity and improved performance. It is shown by simulation that the proposed CCE schemes substantially enhance the mean equare error and symbol error rate performances of the MMSE based channel estimation by providing more accurate channel correlation information.

A point-to-point fixed wireless access (FWA) system with a maximum throughput of 1Gbps has been developed in the 39GHz band. A double-layer plate-laminated waveguide slot array antenna is successfully realized with specific considerations of practical application. The antenna is designed so as to hold the VSWR under 1.5. The antenna input as well as feeding network is configured to reduce the antenna profile as well as the antenna weight. In addition, integrating the antenna into a wireless terminal is taken into account. A shielding wall, whose effectiveness is experimentally demonstrated, is set in the middle of the wireless terminal to achieve the spatial isolation of more than 65dB between two antennas on the H-plane. 30 test antennas are fabricated by diffusion bonding of thin metal plates, to investigate the tolerance and mass-productivity of this process. An aluminum antenna, which has the advantages of light weight and anti-aging, is also fabricated and evaluated with an eye to the future.

Light weight RLSAs with a honeycomb-type parallel plate are promising candidates for satellite antennas. However, the design of slot lengths and positions in honeycomb RLSAs consisting of a core, skin and adhesive layers involves time-consuming EM analysis. In this paper, an equivalent double layer model is devised for fast slot coupling analysis by the Method of moments (MoM) together with a simplified array design procedure. A fabricated antenna with a diameter of 900mm demonstrates the high directivity of 48.3dBi and a gain of 44.6dBi at 32GHz, with the reflection below -15dB. This antenna weighs only 1.16kg.

This paper contributes to k-error linear complexity of some generalized cyclotomic binary sequences of length 2pm and pm constructed in recent years. By defining related reference sequences, we find that these sequences possess very low k-error linear complexity for some certain values of the parameter k even though they have high linear complexity. Moreover, we point out that (p-1)-tuple distributions of all these sequences are not span. Thus they should be selected carefully for use in stream cipher systems.

A directional lapped orthogonal transform (DirLOT) is an orthonormal transform of which basis is allowed to be anisotropic with the symmetric, real-valued and compact-support property. Due to its directional property, DirLOT is superior to the existing separable transforms such as DCT and DWT in expressing diagonal edges and textures. The goal of this paper is to enhance the ability of DirLOT further. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel image restoration technique using multiple DirLOTs. This paper generalizes an image denoising technique in [1], and expands the application of multiple DirLOTs by introducing linear degradation operator P. The idea is to use multiple DirLOTs to construct a redundant dictionary. More precisely, the redundant dictionary is constructed as a union of symmetric orthonormal discrete wavelet transforms generated by DirLOTs. To select atoms fitting a target image from the dictionary, we formulate an image restoration problem as an l1-regularized least square problem, which can efficiently be solved by the iterative-shrinkage/thresholding algorithm (ISTA). The proposed technique is beneficial in expressing multiple directions of edges/textures. Simulation results show that the proposed technique significantly outperforms the non-subsampled Haar wavelet transform for deblurring, super-resolution, and inpainting.

Gopalan, Klivans, and Zuckerman proposed a list-decoding algorithm for Reed-Muller codes. Their algorithm works up to a given list-decoding radius. Dumer, Kabatiansky, and Tavernier improved the complexity of the algorithm for binary Reed-Muller codes by using the well-known Plotkin construction. In this study, we propose a list-decoding algorithm for non-binary Reed-Muller codes as a generalization of Dumer et al.'s algorithm. Our algorithm is based on a generalized Plotkin construction, and is more suitable for parallel computation than the algorithm of Gopalan et al. Since the list-decoding algorithms of Gopalan et al., Dumer et al., and ours can be applied to more general codes than Reed-Muller codes, we give a condition for codes under which these list-decoding algorithms works.

This paper proposes an enhanced feature detection method for the OFDM signals of digital TV (DTV) standards, namely Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) and Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting-Terrestrial (ISDB-T). The proposed method exploits property of time-domain sliding correlation results of DTV signals with the pilots that are inserted into OFDM symbols. Some correlation outputs are much larger than the remaining outputs and are called correlation peaks here, and, the distance between their positions in the correlation output sequence keep constant regardless of the received DTV timings. The proposed method then derives sensing test statistic with improved SNR by aggregating the correlation peaks based on their positions. Performance of the proposed method is evaluated by both computer simulation and hardware implementation. Simulation results for DVB-T detection verify that compared to the optimal conventional sensing method, the proposed method achieves superior sensing performance. It reduces sampling time by about 25% for the same sensing performance while increasing computational complexity by around 0.0001%. Hardware performance further verifies that the proposed method is able to accurately detect ISDB-T at the low SNR of -14.5 dB by employing 8 OFDM symbol durations of samples.

An accurate and rapid synchronization scheme is a prerequisite for achieving high-quality multimedia transmission for wireless handheld terminals, e.g. China multimedia mobile broadcasting (CMMB) system. In this paper, an efficient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) timing synchronization scheme, which is robust to the doubly selective fading channel, is proposed for CMMB system. TS timing is derived by performing an inverse sliding correlation (ISC) between the segmented Sync sequences in the Beacon, which possesses the inverse conjugate symmetry (ICS) characteristic. The ISC can provide sufficient correlative gain even in the ultra low signal noise ratio (SNR) scenarios. Moreover, a fast fine symbol timing method based on the auto-correlation property of Sync sequence is also presented. According to the detection strategy for the significant channel taps, the specific information about channel profile can be obtained. The advantages of the proposed timing scheme over the traditional ones have been demonstrated through both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations.

  • F-DSA: A Fast Dynamic Slot Assignment Protocol for Ad Hoc Networks

    3902-3905

In this letter, we propose a fast dynamic slot assignment (F-DSA) protocol to reduce timeslot access delay of a newly arrived node in ad hoc networks. As there is no central coordinator, a newly arrived node needs separate negotiation with all the neighboring nodes for assigning slots to itself. Thus, it may result in network join delay and this becomes an obstacle for nodes to dynamically join and leave networks. In order to deal with this issue better, F-DSA simplifies the slot assignment process. It provides frequent opportunities to assign slots by using mini-slots to share control packets in a short time. Numerical analysis and extensive simulation show that F-DSA can significantly reduce the timeslot access delay compared with other existing slot assignment protocols. In addition, we investigate the effect of the mini-slot overhead on the performance.

This paper proposes an efficient broadcast scheme based on traffic density measurement to mitigate broadcast storms in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs). In a VANET, the number of vehicles that rebroadcasts a message is closely related with the collision ratio of the message, so a well-designed broadcast scheme should consider traffic density when rebroadcasting a message. The proposed scheme introduces a traffic density measurement scheme and broadcast scheme for VANET. It is based on the slotted p-persistence scheme, but the rebroadcast procedure is enhanced and the rebroadcast probability p is controlled dynamically according to the estimated traffic density. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms existing schemes in terms of the end-to-end delay and collision ratio.
