  • A Study on Channel Estimation Using Two-Dimensional Interpolation Filters for Mobile Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting

    This paper presents discussion about channel fluctuation on channel estimation in digital terrestrial television broadcasting. This channel estimation uses a two-dimensional (2D) filter. In our previous work, only a structure of a lattice is considered for generation of nonrectangular 2D filter. We investigate generation of nonrectangular 2D filter with adaptive method, because we should refer to not only a lattice but also channel conditions. From the computer simulations, we show that bit error rate of the proposed filter is improved compared to that of the filter depending on only lattices.

  • A Lightweight Radial Line Slot Antenna with Honeycomb Structure for Space Use

    A lightweight and high gain planar antenna for space use is realized with radial waveguide slotted array and honeycomb structure with the weight of 1.16 kg and the diameter of 920.5 mm. The slot coupling is analyzed by method of moments considering the hybrid mode in the multi-layer waveguide structure. The propagation constant of the honeycomb structure is measured and the low-loss property is obtained at the frequency range of 8 GHz. The fabricated RLSA is measured and the reflection is around -10 dB in 8 GHz band. The measured aperture fields agree with the calculation in the radial direction. In the azimuthal direction, on the other hand, the fields show ripples of 6 dB and 60 degree. The gain of 35.9 dBi with the efficiency of 58.7% is obtained at 8.6 GHz.

    This paper presents a target location estimation method that can use a pair of leaky coaxial cables to determine the 2D coordinates of the target. Since convention location techniques using leaky coaxial cables can find a target location along the cable in 1D, they have been unable to locate it in 2D planes. The proposed method enables us to estimate target on a 2D plane using; 1) a beam-forming technique and 2) a reconstruction technique based on Hough transform. Leaky coaxial cables are equipped with numerous slots at regular interval, which can be utilized as antenna arrays that acts both as transmitters and receivers. By completely exploiting this specific characteristic of leaky coaxial cables, we carried out an antenna array analysis that performs in a beam-forming fashion. Simulation and experimental results support the effectiveness of the proposed target location method.

    The conventional AOA estimation schemes assume multiple antennas, which usually causes high-cost estimation systems. Moreover, the schemes are very vulnerable to multi-path interferences. In this letter, a novel scheme is proposed for the efficient AOA estimation. The scheme is based on cyclic pilot symbols, which guarantees the use of a single antenna and the robustness over multi-path interferences.

    In this paper, a frequency transformation for designing polyphase transfer functions is proposed. A modification to the bilinear LP-LP transformation, which assigns both stopband edges on negative frequency range whereas passband edges are on positive one, results polyphase transfer functions. Design examples show validity of the proposed method.

    Cognitive Radios (CRs) are expected to perform more significant role in the view of efficient utilization of the spectrum resources in the future wireless communication networks. In this paper, a cognitive radio coexisting with cellular systems is proposed. In the case that a cellular system adopts Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) as a multiplexing scheme, the proposed CR terminals communicate in local area on uplink channels of the cellular system with transmission powers that don't interfere with base stations of the cellular system. Alternatively, in the case that a cellular system adopts Time Division Duplex (TDD), the CR terminals communicate on uplink slots of the cellular system. However if mobile terminals in the cellular system are near the CR network, uplink signals from the mobile terminals may interfere with the CR communications. In order to avoid interference from the mobile terminals, the CR terminal performs carrier sense during a beginning part of uplink slot, and only when the level of detected signal is below a threshold, then the CR terminal transmits a signal during the remained period of the uplink slot. In this paper, both the single carrier CR network that uses one frequency channel of the cellular system and the multicarrier CR network that uses multiple frequency channels of the cellular system are considered. The probabilities of successful CR communications, the average throughputs of the CR communications according to the positions of the CR network, and the interference levels from cognitive radio network to base stations of the cellular system are evaluated in the computer simulation then the effectiveness of the proposed network is clarified.

    In this paper, an inverse S-shaped slotted ground structure (S-SGS) is proposed and analyzed. The S-SGS generates dual attenuation poles that can be easily controlled by its structure parameters. The equivalent circuit of the S-SGS consists of lumped elements that can be extracted from the measured S parameters. Moreover, several S-SGS cells are applied to form a miniaturized lowpass filter (LPF), which has a smaller area and a wider stopband in comparison to previous works.

  • Beam Scan of the Millimeter Wave Radiation from a Waveguide Slot Array Antenna Using a Ferrite

    This letter describes a millimeter wave slot array antenna using a rectangular waveguide and a ferrite. The radiation direction of the leaky wave from the slot array can be scanned by applying a dc bias magnetic field parallel to the ferrite. The radiation pattern of a prototype antenna has been measured at 40 GHz. The main beam direction changes from 10 to 3 degree by the bias magnetic field of 0.73 T.

    We recorded time series data of calls of Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica; Nihon-Ama-Gaeru) and examined the dynamics of the experimentally observed data not only through linear time series analysis such as power spectra but also through nonlinear time series analysis such as reconstruction of orbits with delay coordinates and different kinds of recurrence plots, namely the conventional recurrence plot (RP), the iso-directional recurrence plot (IDRP), and the iso-directional neighbors plot (IDNP). The results show that a single frog called nearly periodically, and a pair of frogs called nearly periodically but alternately in almost anti-phase synchronization with little overlap through mutual interaction. The fundamental frequency of the calls of a single frog during the interactive calling between two frogs was smaller than when the same frog first called alone. We also used the recurrence plots to study nonlinear and nonstationary determinism in the transition of the calling behavior. Moreover, we quantified the determinism of the nonlinear and nonstationary dynamics with indices of the ratio R of the number of points in IDNP to that in RP and the percentage PD of contiguous points forming diagonal lines in RP by the recurrence quantification analysis (RQA). Finally, we discuss a possibility of mathematical modeling of the calling behavior and a possible biological meaning of the call alternation.

    In this paper, CPW-fed slot antennas using loading metallic strips and a widened tuning stub (CPW-FSLW) which provides wideband operation on the flat, a Λ-shape reflector with horizontal plate that prevents the back radiation and provides the uni-directional radiation are investigated. We observe that the size and shape of the reflector have significant impact on the impedance matching and radiation patterns. By fabricating the CPW-FSLW on the Λ-shape reflector with horizontal plate structure, noticeable enhancements in both radiation pattern and bandwidth are achieved. The antennas are verified both through numerical simulations and also measurements of the experimental prototypes and these confirm the good performance antennas. It is found that the proposed antenna can deliver a measured impedance bandwidth of 64% from 1.6 to 3.1 GHz for VSWR ≤ 2. The antennas are designed to have wideband operation suitable for applications in GSM1800, GSM1900, PCS, IMT-2000 and WLAN bands.

  • Switched-Beam Slot Antenna over Electromagnetic Band-Gap Reflector

    This paper presents the switched-beam slot antenna over the electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) reflector. This antenna is composed of two slot elements fed with a phase difference and the EBG reflector, which is used in order to realize a low profile structure. The radiation characteristics of this antenna are calculated using the FDTD method. Calculations show that the height of the antenna using the EBG reflector is 60 % lower than that of the antenna using a perfect electric conductor (PEC) reflector. The radiation characteristics at the center of the operating frequency band in the EBG reflector are equivalent to that in the PEC reflector. It is shown that the tilt angle of the main beam in the elevation plane varies with the operating frequency, and the variation in the case of the EBG reflector is caused by its frequency-dependent reflection phase. Moreover, the radiation pattern of the fabricated antenna is measured. The results demonstrate that the low profile design can be achieved by using the EBG reflector, and reveal the influence of the EBG reflector on the antenna efficiency.

    In this letter we introduce new generalized cyclotomic sequences of order two and length pq firstly, then we determine the linear complexity and autocorrelation values of these sequences. Our results show that these sequences are rather good from the linear complexity viewpoint.

  • Radiation Properties of Multiband Circular MSA with Half-Ring Slots

    Novel multiband circular microstrip antennas (C-MSAs) with multiple half-ring slots are presented in this paper. Two antenna-feeding systems, i.e. an embedded L-probe beneath the patch and a coplanar circular arc- shaped probe (T-probe), are used to feed the C-MSA with multiple half-ring slots. The embedded L-probe is used to excite the C-MSA with a double-layer dielectric substrate due to its tremendous performance to provide a wideband impedance matching. The coplanar T-probe is proposed to realize an excellent multiband C-MSA in a single-layer structure. The C-MSA with four half-ring slots fed by the embedded L-probe exhibits satisfactory radiation characteristics. Five frequencies with broadside radiation patterns and gains of at least 5.0 dBi are obtained. It is also confirmed by simulation that resonant frequency and gain can be easily controlled to meet the desired frequency requirements. Moreover, the C-MSA with three half-ring slots fed by the coplanar T-probe presents satisfactory performance over the four observed frequencies with good return losses (-10 dB reference). Broadside radiation patterns with acceptable cross-polarization level and gains in the range of 3.0-7.0 dBi are obtained. Couplings between the C-MSA and the coplanar T-probe have an important contribution to obtain good return losses. It can be controlled by adjusting the distance between them and the arc angle of the coplanar T-probe appropriately. Experiments of both types of antenna were conducted to verify the simulation results and good agreements are confirmed. Due to the performances, these two C-MSAs are considered to be an effective model as a multiband planar antenna.

  • An Alternating-Phase Fed Single-Layer Slotted Waveguide Array with a Sector Shaped Beam for Millimeter-Wave Radar Applications

    This paper presents design of an alternating-phase fed single-layer slotted waveguide array for a sector shaped beam in the E-plane radiation pattern. A sector beam pattern is very effective for radar applications for detecting obstacles in a certain angular range without mechanical or electronic scanning. The sector shaped beam with 13 degree beam width is synthesized by a cascade of T-junctions in the feed waveguide which excite the radiating waveguides with a longitudinal shunt slot array. In order to realize the required excitation distribution of the radiating waveguides for the sector shaped beam, 30 T-junctions with symmetrical arrangement are designed by tuning a width of the coupling window, an offset of the window, and a width of the feed waveguide cascaded to the subsequent T-junction, respectively. Design and measurement are performed in 60 GHz band. The prototype antenna assembles easily; the slotted plate is just tacked on the groove feed structure and is fixed by screws at the periphery, which is the key advantage of the alternating-phase fed arrays. The measured sector pattern with low sidelobe level agrees well with the predicted one. Validity of the sector beam design as well as the performance of the alternating-phase fed array is confirmed by the measurement.

  • Compact and Broadband Circularly Polarized Microstrip Antenna with Ring-Slot on Ground Plane

    For a microstrip antenna (MSA) with a ring-shaped slot on formed on the ground plane, downsizing the microstrip patch and expanding the circularly polarized bandwidth have been achieved successfully. The dimensions of the patch are 6.8 mm7.4 mm and the minimum axial ratio (AR) of 0.6 dB is obtained at 6.1 GHz. In addition, its AR is less than 3 dB at the relative bandwidth of 3.5%. The bandwidth of the proposed MSA is twice that of conventional single-feeding circularly polarized MSAs; however, its size is only half that of conventional MSAs.

  • Performance Evaluation of SAGE Algorithm for Channel Estimation and Data Detection Using Superimposed Training in MIMO System

    Recently, the superimposed pilot channel estimation has attracted attention for wireless communications, where the pilot symbol sequence is superimposed on a data symbol sequence and transmitted together, and thus there is no drop in information rate. In the superimposed pilot channel estimation, the receiver correlates the received symbol sequence with the pilot symbol sequence, and obtains the channel estimate. However, the correlation between the pilot symbol sequence and the data symbol sequence deteriorates the channel estimation accuracy. In particular, the channel estimation accuracy of the superimposed pilot channel estimation scheme is significantly deteriorated in MIMO systems, because the pilot symbol power of each transmit antenna to the total transmit power of all transmit antennas becomes smaller as the number of transmit antennas increases. On the other hand, it has been well known that the SAGE algorithm is an effective method for channel estimation and data detection. This algorithm is particularly effective in MIMO systems, because the operation of this algorithm can cancel the interference from other transmit antennas. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the SAGE algorithm for channel estimation and data detection using superimposed pilot channel estimation in MIMO systems. From the results of computer simulations, we show that the system using the SAGE algorithm with superimposed training can achieve the good BER performances by using the SAGE algorithm with iteration.

  • Identification of ARMA Speech Models Using an Effective Representation of Voice Source

    A two-stage least square identification method is proposed for estimating ARMA (autoregressive moving average) coefficients from speech signals. A pulse-train like input sequence is often employed to account for the source effects in estimating vocal tract parameters of voiced speech. Due to glottal and radiation effects, the pulse train, however, does not represent the effective voice source. The authors have already proposed a simple but effective model of voice source for estimating AR (autoregressive) coefficients. This letter extends our approach to ARMA analysis to wider varieties of speech sounds including nasal vowels and consonants. Analysis results on both synthetic and natural nasal speech are presented to demonstrate the analysis ability of the method.

    This paper contributes to a new generalized cyclotomic sequences of order two with respect to p1e1p2e2… ptet. The emphasis is on the linear complexity and autocorrelation of new prime-square sequences and two-prime sequences, two special cases of these generalized cyclotomic sequences. Our method is based on their characteristic polynomials. Results show that these sequences possess good linear complexity. Under certain conditions, the autocorrelation functions of new prime-square sequences and two-prime sequences may be three-valued.

    In this paper, the authors propose a circularly polarized printed antenna combining a slot array antenna and a patch antenna, with dual-band operation. The proposed antenna has good isolation performance, is compact, and has simple configuration. This antenna is composed of two parts, a patch antenna (for Rx) on the top, and a slot array antenna (for Tx) on the bottom, respectively. The element layout is such that the lower radiation element is not hidden by the upper one for wide observation angle. Hence, both radiation elements can naturally radiate the targeted polarization. Both slot array and patch antenna are fed by electromagnetically coupled microstrip line feed. With such a configuration, it is possible to efficiently obtain good isolation characteristics for both frequency bands. Furthermore, this antenna can be easily composed and it is not necessary to use any feeding pin or via hole. The target of this antenna is mobile communications applications such as mobile satellite communications, base-station of wireless LAN, etc. Here, the design techniques are discussed and the numerical and experimental analyses are presented.

    Sequences with good correlation properties are widely used in engineering applications, especially in the area of communications. Among the known sequences, cyclotomic families have the optimal autocorrelation property. In this paper, we decide the cross-correlation function of the known cyclotomic sequences completely. Moreover, to get our results, the relations between the multiplier group and the decimations of the characteristic sequence are also established for an arbitrary difference set.
