    In this study, a multiple U-shaped slot microstrip patch antenna for application to the 5 GHz band is designed and fabricated. To obtain sufficient bandwidth in the operating band, foam is inserted between the substrate and ground plane, the type of form is styrofoam, the coaxial probe source is used, and the position of the probe shift is adjusted from the center to the left. The measured result (5.02-5.955 GHz) of the fabricated antenna satisfies the conditions of VSWR < 2.0 in 5 GHz band (5.15-5.35 GHz, 5.47-5.725 GHz, 5.725-5.825 GHz), gain of 3.88-9.28 dBi, and broad radiation pattern.

    This paper proposes a scattered-pilot-OFDM reception scheme employing turbo inter-carrier interference (ICI) cancellation in the fast varying fading environments of mobile communications. In the OFDM transmission, the orthogonality among the subcarriers cannot hold due to large Doppler shift, and the OFDM signal suffers from severe degradation due to ICI. The proposed receiver carries out two modes: (i) a coherent detection (CD) mode, and (ii) a turbo ICI cancellation (TC) mode. Initially, the receiver performs the CD mode. When any decision errors are detected, it shifts from the CD mode to the TC one that carries out both the ICI cancellation and the channel estimation by using the decoder output (the log likelihood ratio). In addition, the iteration of the TC mode can improve the accuracy of the channel estimation and ICI cancellation ability. Computer simulations following specifications for the mobile reception mode in the digital terrestrial television broadcasting demonstrate that the receiver can effectively cancel ICI due to the fast varying fading, and that its average BER performance is much better than that of CD.

    In this letter we first introduce a new generalized cyclotomic sequence of order four with respect to pq, then we calculate the linear complexity and minimal polynomial of this sequence. Our results show that the new binary sequence is quite good from the linear complexity viewpoint.

    In this Letter, a dumbbell-shaped patch loaded slotline(PLS) is proposed. Like the conventional defected ground structure(DGS) for a microstrip line, we show that the proposed PLS can provide a wide bandstop characteristic in some frequency bands with only one or small number of unit cells. Also, the equivalent circuit model for a unit section is derived from the analysis of the field distributions in the structure and its circuit parameters are determined by means of full wave numerical simulations. This equivalent circuit is shown to be dual to that of the typical DGS in a microstrip line. A broadband microstrip to slotline transition is incorporated in the PLS in order to measure the characteristics of the structure. The experimental results agree well with the simulations and show the validity of the modeling for the proposed PLS.

    The use of coplanar waveguide (CPW)-fed ultra-wideband antennas in applications of multi-system integration has been demonstrated in this paper. Spiral slot antennas and feeding structures were fabricated on the same plane of the substrate so that the circuit process and the position alignment could be simplified. A CPW-fed spiral slot antenna possessing the ultra-wideband characteristic is also suitable for integration with a monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) module. Variations of the measured initial resonant frequency due to substrate thickness, number of turns and slot width are discussed in this paper. In addition, two topologies of the CPW-fed spiral slot antenna were devised and measured to demonstrate the capability of lowering the initial resonant frequency by adding a circularly microstrip stub at the end of the feedline and placing a short pin to terminate the spiral slot and feedline. According to the measured results, the CPW-fed spiral slot antenna covered most of the commercial wireless communication and satellite communication systems in radio frequency (RF), microwave and millimeter-wave applications.

    LOTOS parallel operator, which is a binary operator, is used to combine processes in order to express their concurrency. Unlike other LOTOS operators, various possibilities exist when combining processes by the parallel operator. If two processes are selected randomly for combining, the size of the composite intermediate process after combining may be large. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for selecting two processes out of three or more processes so that the size of the intermediate process is the smallest when combined by the parallel operator. Smaller size of an intermediate process means it takes less memory space which is very important in designing verification tools for systems or communication protocols specified in LOTOS.

    One of the important techniques in communication system design is the composition of service and protocol specifications. In this paper, we have presented a new approach to the composition technique based on the weak bisimulation concept. The main objective is to combine service specifications and protocol specifications individually and simultaneously. The composition technique can maintain the equivalence between the composed service and protocol specifications. LOTOS language terms are utilized to describe the communication specifications. The application on the asynchronous model is presented. Moreover, a support system of the composition technique is developed and presented in this paper.

    Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technique for achieving high bit-rate transmission in radio environments. Various techniques to estimate channel attenuation have been proposed for OFDM transmission. In these techniques, the added pilot semi-blind (APSB) channel estimation has been proposed, which does not require any additional bandwidth. For an OFDM packet transmission that includes preambles, it is difficult to track the channel variation of the latter of packet due to time-varying channels in fast fading environments. We expect that the channel estimation is improved by applying the APSB channel estimation technique to the last symbols of packets without any additional bandwidth or degradation of bit rate. In this paper, we propose an OFDM packet transmission system with APSB channel estimation technique where this technique is applied to the last symbols of packets. We expect that the proposed system can track the fast time-variant channels without decrease of the data-rate, and the packet error rate (PER) is improved. We show that our proposed system is effective for improving the accuracy of the channel estimate in fast fading channels.

    A round-ended wide straight slot cut in the broad wall of a rectangular waveguide is analyzed by the Method of Moments (MoM) using numerical eigenmode basis functions derived by the edge-based finite element method (FEM), referred to as MoM/FEM. The frequency characteristics of the calculated transmission coefficients are compared with the measured ones, and good agreement is observed for a wide variety of antenna parameters. For simpler analysis that does not use MoM/FEM, an equivalent rectangular slot approximation for a round-ended slot is discussed. The resonant frequencies of empirically introduced "equal-area" and "equal-perimeter" slots are compared with those of round-ended slots for a wide variety of parameters such as slot width, wall thickness and dielectric constant inside the waveguide. Based upon MoM/FEM, which can be a reliable reference, it is found that the equal-area slot always gives a better approximation of the order of 1% over that of the equal-perimeter one which is of the order of 5%. For higher accuracy, a new rectangular slot approximation of a round-ended slot is proposed to be a linear combination of equal-area and equal perimeter approximation. The error is around 0.25% for a wide variety of parameters such as slot width-to-length ratio, wall thickness and dielectric constant of the filling material inside the waveguide.

    A post-wall waveguide-fed parallel plate slotted array is an attractive candidate for high efficiency and mass producible planar array antennas for millimeter wave applications. For the slot design of this large sized array, a periodic boundary wall model based on the assumption of infinite array size and a parallel waveguide is used. In fact, the aperture is large but still finite (10-40 wavelength) and the TEM-like wave is perturbed due to the narrow walls at the periphery of the aperture as well as the slot coupling; antenna efficiency is affected by the size and the aspect ratio of the aperture. All these observations imply the unique defects of oversized waveguide arrays. In this paper, the aperture efficiency of post-wall waveguide arrays is assessed as a function of size and aspect ratio of the aperture for the first time, both in theory and measurement. An effective field analysis for an electrically large oversized waveguide array, developed by the author, is utilized for determining the slot excitation coefficients and aperture illumination. It is predicted that the oversized waveguide array has a potential efficiency of 80-90% if the aperture is larger than 18 wavelength on a side and the gain is more than 30 dBi. A transversely wide aperture generally provides higher efficiency than a longitudinally long aperture, provided a perfectly uniform TEM wave would be launched from the feed waveguide.

  • Frequency Band and Time Slot Selection Scheme for Downlink Packet Communications in Cellular Band Division MC-CDM Systems

    Band Division MC-CDM (BD-MC-CDM) has been proposed for high quality wireless communications and has been investigated in terms of link level performance. In this paper, we investigate frequency band and time slot selection technique from the viewpoint of system level performance in order to realize the efficient BD-MC-CDM system under cellular environments. Then a downlink frequency band and time slot selection scheme is proposed for cellular BD-MC-CDM systems. The proposed scheme selects transmission frequency band according to the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) estimated by using the pilot signal at mobile stations and also selects transmission time slot by using the SIR threshold. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the downlink throughput but degrades delay performance and it has a trade off between throughput and delay performance. By selecting suitable control parameters, the proposed scheme achieves the throughput improvement without sacrificing the delay performance.

  • A Study on an Advanced QoS Provisioning Scheme Using CDMA Traffic Measurement in ALL-IP Networks

    Currently, the IP infrastructure is widely available, which reduces the deployment and implementation cost of IP-based wireless networks. But, the corresponding researches on Quality of Service (QoS) in wireless mobile networks have not been done sufficiently. Although All-IP network has gotten the spotlight for both wired and wireless integrated networks, it has some unavoidable defects as it is based on best-effort IP transmission technologies. By focusing our attention on this point, we propose an Advanced QoS Provisioning Scheme (AQPS) that can provide satisfied QoS for multimedia applications based on accurate traffic measurements. With the AQPS, we consider 1xEV-DV system as a target system, extract QoS requirements for this system, and develop a corresponding QoS provisioning method using CDMA traffic measurement. The AQPS is designed to estimate delay parameters between a mobile station and a BTS (or repeater), verify whether the mobile station can support RSVP or not, operate a corresponding scheduler, and assign appropriate time slots based on traffic classes. One of the interesting results of this research is that the capability of distinguishing BTS' traffic from repeater's traffic helps save implementation cost of CDMA systems. The AQPS has been verified to outperform the existing system used in the current CDMA network and to efficiently manage network resources by computer simulations.

    A hybrid method-of-moments (MoM) and immittance approach for efficient and accurate analysis of printed slots and strips of arbitrary shape in layered waveguide for various applications has been proposed. An impedance-type MoM is formulated from the electric field integral equation (EFIE) for printed strip case and an admittance-type MoM is formulated from the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE) for the printed slot case, using the Galerkin's technique. Immittance approach has been used to calculate spectral dyadic Green's functions for the layered waveguide. For efficient analysis of large and complex structures, equivalent circuit parameters of a block are first extracted and complete structure is analyzed through cascaded ABCD matrices. The equivalent circuit characterization of printed strip and slot in layered waveguide has been done for the first time. Finite periodic structure loaded with printed strips has been investigated and it shows the electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) behavior. The electromagnetic (EM) program hence developed is checked for its numerical accuracy and efficiency with results generated with High-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) and shows good performance.

    Classical studies of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching elements and in particular the buffer behavior of the Shared Buffer Memory (SBM), assume that all read and write operations of cells to, respectively from, the SBM are executed simultaneously. However, in a real switching element, the inlets (outlets) are scanned sequentially for arriving (departing) cells during the so-called input (output) cycle. Furthermore, the input and output cycles are intermingled, each read operation being followed by a write operation. This is referred to as the Timeslot Interchange Mechanism (TIM). In this paper, we present the analysis of a queueing model that includes the TIM. We model the cell arrival processes on the inlets of the switching element as independent Bernoulli arrival processes. Moreover, we assume that cells are routed from the inlets to the outlets of the switching element according to an independent and uniform process, i.e., the destinations of consecutive cell arrivals on any given inlet are independent and for a given cell all destinations are equiprobable. Under these assumptions, we will derive expressions for the probability generating functions of the queue length in an individual routing group (a logical queue that contains all cells scheduled for the same destination), the (total) queue length in the SBM, and the cell waiting time. From these results, expressions for the mean values and the tail distributions of these quantities are calculated, and the influence of the TIM on the buffer behavior is studied through comparison with a model where all read and write operations occur simultaneously.

    This paper presents time slot assignment algorithms applicable to uplink of space division multiple access (SDMA)/time division multiple access (TDMA) systems with adaptive antennas. In the time slot assignment process for a new terminal in a cell, we consider not only the signal quality of the new terminal but also that of active terminals in the same cell. Intra-cell hand over is performed for an active terminal when its signal quality deteriorates. We evaluate the blocking and forced termination probabilities for pure TDMA systems, sectorized systems, and SDMA/TDMA systems in cellular environments by computer simulations. The simulation results show that the SDMA/TDMA systems have much better performance than the pure TDMA and sectorized systems.

  • Mechanical Phase Shifting in the Power Divider for Single-Layer Slotted Waveguide Arrays

    A mechanical phase shifter is designed for beam scanning in co-phase fed single-layer slotted waveguide arrays. The multiple-way power divider in this array consists of a series of π-junctions with one guide wavelength spacing in a feed waveguide. The movable narrow walls placed between the π-junctions perturb the guide wavelength as well as the phase of output ports. Method of Moment (MoM) analysis for one unit consisting of one movable plate and two junctions is conducted to estimate the available phase shift as well as the degradation of reflection. A phase shift of 86 degrees is predicted between two π-junctions under the condition of reflection below -20 dB; experiments at 4 GHz confirmed the design. The beam scanning capability of the arrays is also surveyed and the beam-scanning of about 10 degrees is predicted.

  • Design of Channel Estimation Filters for Pilot Channel Based DS-CDMA Systems

    The accuracy of channel estimation significantly affects the performance of coherent receiver in a DS-CDMA system. The receiver performance can be improved if an appropriate channel estimation filter is used according to the channel condition. In this paper, we consider the design of channel estimation filters for pilot channel based DS-CDMA systems. When a moving average (MA) FIR filter is used as the channel estimation filter (CEF), the tap size is optimized by minimizing the mean squared error of the estimated channel impulse response. Finally, the analytic design is verified by computer simulation. Numerical results show that the optimum MA FIR CEF provides near optimum performance, i.e., quite similar to that with the use of Wiener filter.

    This paper describes the design, fabrication, and measurement of a multiple U-shaped slot antenna for Hiper-LAN. The prototype consists of a U-shaped slot and two inverted U-shaped slot. To obtain sufficient bandwidth, a foam layer is inserted between the ground plane and substrate. A measured bandwidth of approximately 7.6% (VSWR 1.5) and gain of 2.9-5.3 dBi are obtained. The experimental far-field patterns are shown to be stable across the pass band, with the 3 dB beam width in azimuth and elevation at 50and 62, respectively.

    A polarization switchable slot-coupled microstrip antenna using PIN diodes is proposed and studied. The microstrip feed line installed behind the ground plane is divided into two branches and each tip of the branches is connected to the ground plane through a PIN diode. One of the diodes is oriented from the tip to the ground plane and the other is oriented from the ground to the tip so that a slot in the ground can be selected to feed the patch by switching the dc bias between positive and negative. This selection contributes to switch the polarization between horizontal and vertical. In this paper, the authors investigate the polarization switching antenna theoretically and experimentally and confirmed sufficient differencce of antenna gain between horizontal and vertical polarization.

    Hyperthermia is one of the modalities for cancer treatment, utilizing the difference of thermal sensitivity between tumor and normal tissue. In this treatment, the tumor or target cancer cell is heated up to the therapeutic temperature between 42 and 45 without overheating the surrounding normal tissues. Particularly, the authors have been studying the coaxial-slot antenna for interstitial microwave hyperthermia. At that time, we analyzed the heating characteristics of the coaxial-slot antenna under the assumption that the human body is a homogeneous medium. In this paper, we analyzed the heating characteristics of the coaxial-slot antenna inside an actual neck tumor by using numerical calculations. The models of calculations consist of MRI tomograms of an actual patient. As a result of the calculations, we observed almost uniform temperature distributions inside the human body including the actual neck tumor, which are similar to the results obtained for a homogeneous medium.
