The shift-and-add property (SAP) of a p-ary m-sequence {ak} with period N=pn-1 means that this sequence satisfies the equation {ak+η}+{ak+τ}={ak+λ} for some integers η, τ and λ. For an arbitrarily-given p-ary m-sequence {ak}, we develop an algebraic approach to determine the integer λ for the arbitrarily-given integers η and τ. And all trinomials can be given. Our calculation only depends on the reciprocal polynomial of the primitive polynomial which produces the given m-sequence {ak}, and the cyclotomic cosets mod pn-1.

A PCB-integratable metal cap slot antenna is developed for the 60-GHz band. The antenna is composed of two slots and a T-junction and is fed by a post-wall waveguide on a substrate. The dimensions of the designed antenna are 8.0×4.5×2.5mm3. The designed antenna is insensitive with a metal block behind the antenna. The designed antenna is fabricated by machining a brass block and evaluated by measurement. The measurement shows reflection less than -10.0dB, gain larger than 7.8dBi and beamwidth between 54°-65° over the 60-GHz band with endfire radiation. The antenna showed high gain together with short length of half wavelength in the radiation direction. This antenna also can be integrated with printed circuit board (PCB) and is suitable for mobile terminals such as smart phones and tablets.

Pilot contamination due to pilot reuse in adjacent cells is a very serious problem in massive multi-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Therefore, proper pilot allocation is essential for improving system performance. In this paper, we formulate the pilot allocation optimization problem so as to maximize uplink sum rate of the system. To reduce the required complexity inherent in finding the optimum pilot allocation, we propose a low-complexity pilot allocation algorithm, where the formulated problem is decoupled into multiple subproblems; in each subproblem, the pilot allocation at a given cell is optimized while the pilot allocation in other cells id held fixed. This process is continued until the achievable sum rate converges. Through multiple iterations, the optimum pilot allocation is found. In addition, to improve users' fairness, we formulate fairness-aware pilot allocation as maximization problem of sum of user's logarithmic rate and solve the formulated problem using a similar algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms match the good performance of the exhaustive search algorithm, meanwhile the users' fairness is improved.

Improvement of output and lifetime is a problem for biofuel cells. A structure was adopted in which gelation mixed with agarose and fuel (fructose) was sandwiched by electrodes made of graphene-coated carbon fiber. The electrode surface not contacting the gel was exposed to air. In addition, grooves were added to the gel surface to further increase the oxygen supply. The power density of the fuel cell was examined in terms of the electrode area exposed to air. The output increased almost in proportion to the area of the electrode exposed to air. Optimization of the concentration of fuel, gel, and the amount of enzyme at the cathode were also examined. The maximum power density in the proposed system was approximately 121μW/cm2, an enhancement of approximately 2.5 times that in the case of using liquid fuel. For the power density after 24h, the fuel gel was superior to the fuel liquid.

This paper presents a design for the perpendicular-corporate feed in a four-layer circularly-polarized parallel-plate slot array antenna. We place a dielectric layer with adequate permittivity in the region between the coupling-aperture and the radiating-slot layers to remove x-shaped cavity walls completely in the radiating part of a conventional planar corporate-feed waveguide slot array antenna. To address fabrication constraints, the dielectric layer consists of PTFE and air. It excites a strong standing wave in the region and so provides 2×2-element subarrays with uniform excitation. None of the slot layers are in electrical contact due to air gaps between the slot layers. The four-layer structure with apertures for circular polarization contributes to wideband design for axial ratios because of the eigenmodes in the desired band. We realize an 11.9% bandwidth for axial ratios of less than 3.0dB as confirmed by measurements in the 60GHz band. At the design frequency, the measured realized gain is 32.7dBi with an antenna efficiency of 75.5%.

For capacity expansion of the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) safety confirmation system, frame slotted ALOHA with flag method has previously been proposed as an access control scheme. While it is always able to communicate in an optimum state, its maximum channel efficiency is only 36.8%. In this paper, we propose adding a reservation channel (R-Ch) to the frame slotted ALOHA with flag method to increase the upper limit of the channel efficiency. With an R-Ch, collision due to random channel selection is decreased by selecting channels in multiple steps, and the channel efficiency is improved up to 84.0%. The time required for accommodating 3 million mobile terminals, each sending one message, when using the flag method only and the flag method with an R-Ch are compared. It is shown that the accommodating time can be reduced to less than half by adding an R-Ch to the flag method.

As an optimal combinatorial object, cyclic perfect Mendelsohn difference family (CPMDF) was introduced by Fuji-Hara and Miao to construct optimal optical orthogonal codes. In this paper, we propose a direct construction of disjoint CPMDFs from the Zeng-Cai-Tang-Yang cyclotomy. Compared with a recent work of Fan, Cai, and Tang, our construction doesn't need to depend on a cyclic difference matrix. Furthermore, strictly optimal frequency-hopping sequences (FHSs) are a kind of optimal FHSs which has optimal Hamming auto-correlation for any correlation window. As an application of our disjoint CPMDFs, we present more flexible combinatorial constructions of strictly optimal FHSs, which interpret the previous construction proposed by Cai, Zhou, Yang, and Tang.

In the past two decades, many generalized cyclotomic sequences have been constructed and they have been used in cryptography and communication systems for their high linear complexity and low autocorrelation. But there are a few of papers focusing on the 2-adic complexities of such sequences. In this paper, we first give a property of a class of Gaussian periods based on Whiteman's generalized cyclotomic classes of order 4. Then, as an application of this property, we study the 2-adic complexity of a class of Whiteman's generalized cyclotomic sequences constructed from two distinct primes p and q. We prove that the 2-adic complexity of this class of sequences of period pq is lower bounded by pq-p-q-1. This lower bound is at least greater than one half of its period and thus it shows that this class of sequences can resist against the rational approximation algorithm (RAA) attack.

In this letter, we consider several optimization problems associated with the configuration of grouping-based framed slotted ALOHA protocols. Closed-form formulas for determining the optimal values of system parameters such as the process termination time and confidence levels for partitioned groups are presented. Further, we address the maximum group size required for meaningful grouping gain and the effectiveness of the grouping technique in light of signaling overhead.

When trying to estimate time-varying multipath channels by applying a basis expansion model (BEM) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, pilot clusters are contaminated by inter-carrier interference (ICI). The pilot cluster ICI (PC-ICI) degrades the estimation accuracy of BEM coefficients, which degrades system performance. In this paper, a PC-ICI suppression scheme is proposed, in which two coded symbols defined as weighted sums of data symbols are inserted on both sides of each pilot cluster. Under the assumption that the channel has Flat Doppler spectrum, the optimized weight coefficients are obtained by an alternating iterative optimization algorithm, so that the sum of the PC-ICI generated by the encoded symbols and the data symbols is minimized. By approximating the optimized weight coefficients, they are independent of the channel tap power. Furthermore, it is verified that the proposed scheme is robust to the estimation error of the normalized Doppler frequency offset and can be applied to channels with other types of Doppler spectra. Numerical simulation results show that, compared with the conventional schemes, the proposed scheme achieves significant improvements in the performance of PC-ICI suppression, channel estimation and system bit-error-ratio (BER).

IEEE 802.11ah is a specification being developed for sub-1GHz license-exempt operation and is intended to provide Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) communication services and support Internet of Things (IoT) features such as large-scale networks and extended transmission range. However, these features also make the 802.11ah networks highly susceptible to channel contention and hidden node problem (HNP). To address the problems, the 11ah Task Group proposed a Restricted Access Window (RAW) mechanism. It shows outstanding performance in alleviating channel contention, but its effect on solving HNP is unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective hidden node grouping algorithm (HNGA) based on IEEE 802.11ah RAW. The algorithm collects hidden node information by taking advantage of the 802.11 association process and then performs two-stage uniform grouping to prevent hidden node collisions (HNCs). Performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in comparison with other existing schemes in a hidden node situation. The results show that our proposed algorithm eliminates most of hidden node pairs inside a RAW group with low overhead penalty, thereby improving the performance of the network. Moreover, the algorithm is immune to HNCs caused by cross slot boundary transmissions.

A wideband design of the waveguide short-slot 2-plane coupler with 2×2 input/output ports is designed, fabricated, and evaluated. Using coupling coefficients of complementary propagating modes which are TE11, TE21, and TE30 modes, the flatness of the output amplitudes of 2-plane coupler is improved. The coupler operates from 4.96GHz to 5.27GHz (bandwidth 6.1%) which is wider than the former coupler without considering the complementary propagating mode from 5.04GHz to 5.17GHz (bandwidth 2.5%).

Multi-slot information extraction, also known as frame extraction, is a task that identify several related entities simultaneously. Most researches on this task are concerned with applying IE patterns (rules) to extract related entities from unstructured documents. An important obstacle for the success in this task is unknowing where text portions containing interested information are. This problem is more complicated when involving languages with sentence boundary ambiguity, e.g. the Thai language. Applying IE rules to all reasonable text portions can degrade the effect of this obstacle, but it raises another problem that is incorrect (unwanted) extractions. This paper aims to present a method for removing these incorrect extractions. In the method, extractions are represented as intuitionistic fuzzy sets, and a similarity measure for IFSs is used to calculate distance between IFS of an unclassified extraction and that of each already-classified extraction. The concept of k nearest neighbor is adopted to design whether the unclassified extraction is correct or not. From the experiment on various domains, the proposed technique improves extraction precision while satisfactorily preserving recall.

In this paper, we provide a novel solution to mitigate pilot contamination in massive MIMO technology. In the proposed approach, we consider seven copilot cells of the first layer of interfering cells of a cellular network. We derive and formulate the worst-case signal-to-interference power ratio (SIR) of a typical user in both downlink and uplink of a pilot contaminated cell. Based on the formulated SIR and other considerations of the system, the total pilot sequence length, the reliability of channel estimation within the cell, the spectral and energy efficiencies are derived and formulated in downlink. The user's transmit power and the achievable sum rate are also derived and formulated in uplink. Our results show that when the cell size is reduced the pilot contamination is significantly mitigated and hence the system performance is improved.

A family of quaternary sequences over Z4 is defined based on the Ding-Helleseth generalized cyclotomic classes modulo pq for two distinct odd primes p and q. The linear complexity is determined by computing the defining polynomial of the sequences, which is in fact connected with the discrete Fourier transform of the sequences. The results show that the sequences possess large linear complexity and are “good” sequences from the viewpoint of cryptography.

Two wideband circularly polarized (CP) equilateral triangular slot (ETS) antennas are proposed for communication system and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) sensor of the GAIA-I microsatellite. These wide slot antennas use the ring slot antenna CP generation method due to their shape. The compact antennas employ truncated corners, grounded equilateral triangular perturbation patch and branched feed line to create CP radiation. A 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) enhancement is achieved by inserting a pair of slits into the ETS. A parametric study on the influence of those shape modifications in reflection coefficient and axial ratio is presented. An ETS antenna for communication system of the GAIA-I is fabricated and measured, which is shown to agree well with its simulated performance by providing CP fractional bandwidth of 52%. An ETS antenna designed for the GNSS RO sensor of GAIA-I delivers 3-dB ARBW of 41.6%. The ETS antenna offers uni-directional radiation by mounting a 3D printed truncated cone reflector underneath which also enhances antenna gain.

IoT (Internet of Things) services are emerging and the bandwidth requirements for rich media communication services are increasing exponentially. We propose a virtual edge architecture comprising computation resource management layers and path bandwidth management layers for easy addition and reallocation of new service node functions. These functions are performed by the Virtualized Network Function (VNF), which accommodates terminals covering a corresponding access node to realize fast VNF migration. To increase network size for IoT traffic, VNF migration is limited to the VNF that contains the active terminals, which leads to a 20% reduction in the computation of VNF migration. Fast dynamic bandwidth allocation for dynamic bandwidth paths is realized by proposed Hierarchical Time Slot Allocation of Optical Layer 2 Switch Network, which attain the minimum calculation time of less than 1/100.
