Active network monitoring based on Boolean network tomography is a promising technique to localize link failures instantly in transport networks. However, the required set of monitoring trails must be recomputed after each link failure has occurred to handle succeeding link failures. Existing heuristic methods cannot compute the required monitoring trails in a sufficiently short time when multiple-link failures must be localized in the whole of large-scale managed networks. This paper proposes an approach for computing the required monitoring trails within an allowable expected period specified beforehand. A random walk-based analysis estimates the number of monitoring trails to be computed in the proposed approach. The estimated number of monitoring trails are computed by a lightweight method that only guarantees partial localization within restricted areas. The lightweight method is repeatedly executed until a successful set of monitoring trails achieving unambiguous localization in the entire managed networks can be obtained. This paper demonstrates that the proposed approach can compute a small number of monitoring trails for localizing all independent dual-link failures in managed networks made up of thousands of links within a given expected short period.

In this paper, we present a classification method for a Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system in a colorectal magnified Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) endoscopy. In an endoscopic video image, color shift, blurring or reflection of light occurs in a lesion area, which affects the discrimination result by a computer. Therefore, in order to identify lesions with high robustness and stable classification to these images specific to video frame, we implement a CAD system for colorectal endoscopic images with the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) feature and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification on the embedded DSP core. To improve the robustness of CAD system, we construct the SVM learned by multiple image sizes data sets so as to adapt to the noise peculiar to the video image. We confirmed that the proposed method achieves higher robustness, stable, and high classification accuracy in the endoscopic video image. The proposed method also can cope with differences in resolution by old and new endoscopes and perform stably with respect to the input endoscopic video image.

A new construction of shift sequences is proposed under the condition of P|L, and then the inter-group complementary (IGC) sequence sets are constructed based on the shift sequence. By adjusting the parameter q, two or three IGC sequence sets can be obtained. Compared with previous methods, the proposed construction can provide more sequence sets for both synchronous and asynchronous code-division multiple access communication systems.

In this paper, the influence of surface waves on the characteristics of on-glass antennas is clarified to enable appropriates design of C-band automotive on-glass antennas. Composite glasses are used in automotive windshields. These automotive composite glasses are composed of three layers. First, the surface wave properties of composite glass are investigated. Next, the effects of surface waves on the reflection coefficient characteristics of on-glass antennas are investigated. Finally, the antenna placement to reduce surface wave effect will be presented. Electromagnetic field analysis of a dipole antenna placed at the center of a 300mm × 300mm square flat composite glass showed that the electric field strength in the glass had ripples with the half wavelength period of the surface waves. Therefore, it was confirmed that standing waves are generated because of these surface waves. In addition, it is confirmed that ripples occur in the reflection coefficient at frequencies. Glass size is divisible by each of those guide wavelengths. Furthermore, it was clarified that the reflection coefficient fluctuates with respect to the distance between the antenna and a metal frame, which is attached to the end face in the direction perpendicular to the thickness of the glass because of the influence of standing waves caused by the surface waves; additionally, the reflection coefficient gets worse when the distance between the antenna and the metal frame is an integral multiple of one half wavelength. A similar tendency was observed in an electric field analysis using a model that was shaped like the actual windshield shape. Because radiation patterns also change as a result of the influence of surface waves and metal frames, the results imply that it is necessary to consider the actual device size and the metal frames when designing automotive on-glass antennas.

In this paper, we propose a novel user selection scheme based on jointly combining channel gain (CG) and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) to improve the sum-rate as well as to reduce the computation complexity of multi-user massive multi-input multi-output (MU-massive MIMO) downlink transmission through a block diagonalization (BD) precoding technique. By jointly considering CG and SINR based user sets, sum-rate performance improvement can be achieved by selecting higher gain users with better SINR conditions as well as by eliminating the users who cause low sum-rate in the system. Through this approach, the number of possible outcomes for the user selection scheme can be reduced by counting the common users for every pair of user combinations in the selection process since the common users of CG-based and SINR-based sets possess both higher channel gains and better SINR conditions. The common users set offers not only sum-rate performance improvements but also computation complexity reduction in the proposed scheme. It is shown by means of computer simulation experiments that the proposed scheme can increase the sum-rate with lower computation complexity for various numbers of users as compared to conventional schemes requiring the same or less computational complexity.
Due to the rapid development of different processors, e.g., x86 and Sunway, software porting between different platforms is becoming more frequent. However, the migrated software's execution efficiency on the target platform is different from that of the source platform, and most of the previous studies have investigated the improvement of the efficiency from the hardware perspective. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to exclusively focus on studying what software factors can result in performance change after software migration. To perform our study, we used SonarQube to detect and measure five software factors, namely Duplicated Lines (DL), Code Smells Density (CSD), Big Functions (BF), Cyclomatic Complexity (CC), and Complex Functions (CF), from 13 selected projects of SPEC CPU2006 benchmark suite. Then, we measured the change of software performance by calculating the acceleration ratio of execution time before (x86) and after (Sunway) software migration. Finally, we performed a multiple linear regression model to analyze the relationship between the software performance change and the software factors. The results indicate that the performance change of software migration from the x86 platform to the Sunway platform is mainly affected by three software factors, i.e., Code Smell Density (CSD), Cyclomatic Complexity (CC), and Complex Functions (CF). The findings can benefit both researchers and practitioners.
Expectation propagation (EP) is a powerful algorithm for signal recovery in compressed sensing. This letter proposes correction of a variance message before denoising to improve the performance of EP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime for finite-sized systems. The variance massage is replaced by an observation-dependent consistent estimator of the mean-square error in estimation before denoising. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed correction. Numerical simulations show that the proposed variance correction improves the high SNR performance of EP for massive MIMO with a few hundred transmit and receive antennas.

IEEE P802.3cg established a new pair of Ethernet physical layer devices (PHY), one of which, the short-reach 10BASE-T1S, uses 4B/5B mapping over Differential Manchester Encoding to maintain a data rate of 10 Mb/s at MAC/PLS interface, while providing in-band signaling between transmitter and receivers. However, 10BASE-T1S does not have any error correcting capability built into it. As a response to emerging building, industrial, and transportation requirements, this paper outlines research that leads to the possibility of establishing low-complexity, backward-compatible Forward Error Correction with per-frame configurable guaranteed burst error and erasure correcting capabilities over any 10BASE-T1S Ethernet network segment. The proposed technique combines a specialized, systematic Reed-Solomon code and a novel, three-tier, technique to avoid the appearance of certain inadmissible codeword symbols at the output of the encoder. In this way, the proposed technique enables error and erasure correction, while maintaining backwards compatibility with the current version of the standard.

With the development of IoT devices and sensors, edge computing is leading towards new services like autonomous cars and smart cities. Low-latency data access is an essential requirement for such services, and a large-capacity cache server is needed on the edge side. However, it is not realistic to build a large capacity cache server using only DRAM because DRAM is expensive and consumes substantially large power. A hybrid main memory system is promising to address this issue, in which main memory consists of DRAM and non-volatile memory. It achieves a large capacity of main memory within the power supply capabilities of current servers. In this paper, we propose Fogcached, that is, the extension of a widely-used KVS (Key-Value Store) server program (i.e., Memcached) to exploit both DRAM and non-volatile main memory (NVMM). We used Intel Optane DCPM as NVMM for its prototype. Fogcached implements a Dual-LRU (Least Recently Used) mechanism that seamlessly extends the memory management of Memcached to hybrid main memory. Fogcached reuses the segmented LRU of Memcached to manage cached objects in DRAM, adds another segmented LRU for those in DCPM and bridges the LRUs by a mechanism to automatically replace cached objects between DRAM and DCPM. Cached objects are autonomously moved between the two memory devices according to their access frequencies. Through experiments, we confirmed that Fogcached improved the peak value of a latency distribution by about 40% compared to Memcached.

Recently, edge servers located closer than the cloud have become expected for the purpose of processing the large amount of sensor data generated by IoT devices such as robots. Research has been proposed to improve responsiveness as a cache server by applying KVS (Key-Value Store) to the edge as a method for obtaining high responsiveness. Above all, a hybrid-KVS server that uses both DRAM and NVMM (Non-Volatile Main Memory) devices is expected to achieve both responsiveness and reliability. However, its effectiveness has not been verified in actual applications, and its effectiveness is not clear in terms of its relationship with the cloud. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of hybrid-KVS servers using the SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), which is a widely used application in robots and autonomous driving. It is appropriate for applying an edge server and requires responsiveness and reliability. SLAM is generally implemented on ROS (Robot Operating System) middleware and communicates with the server through ROS middleware. However, if we use hybrid-KVS on the edge with the SLAM and ROS, the communication could not be achieved since the message objects are different from the format expected by KVS. Therefore, in this research, we propose a mechanism to apply the ROS memory object to hybrid-KVS by designing and implementing the data serialization function to extend ROS. As a result of the proposed fogcached-ros and evaluation, we confirm the effectiveness of low API overhead, support for data used by SLAM, and low latency difference between the edge and cloud.
Computing the Lempel-Ziv Factorization (LZ77) of a string is one of the most important problems in computer science. Nowadays, it has been widely used in many applications such as data compression, text indexing and pattern discovery, and already become the heart of many file compressors like gzip and 7zip. In this paper, we show a linear time algorithm called Xone for computing the LZ77, which has the same space requirement with the previous best space requirement for linear time LZ77 factorization called BGone. Xone greatly improves the efficiency of BGone. Experiments show that the two versions of Xone: XoneT and XoneSA are about 27% and 31% faster than BGoneT and BGoneSA, respectively.

In this letter, we propose a new color quantization method suppressing saturation decrease. In the proposed method, saturation-based weight and intensity-based weight are used so that vivid colors are selected as the representative colors preferentially. Experiments show that the proposed method tends to select vivid colors even if they occupy only a small area in the image.

The composite right/left-handed (CRLH) coaxial line (CL) with wideband electromagnetic band gap (EBG) is applied to the wideband choke structure for a monocone antenna with short elements, and the resulting characteristics are considered. In the proposed antenna, impedance matching and leakage current suppression can be achieved across a wideband off. The lowest frequency (|S11| ≤ -10dB) of the proposed antenna is about the same as that of the monocone antenna on an infinite ground plane. In addition, the radiation patterns of the proposed antenna are close to the figure of eight in wideband. The proposed antenna is prototyped, and the validity of the simulation is verified through measurement.

In this paper, we propose a hierarchical Stackelberg game based resource allocation algorithm (HGRAA) to jointly allocate the wireless and computational resources of a mobile edge computing (MEC) system. The proposed HGRAA is composed of two levels: the lower-level evolutionary game (LEG) minimizes the cost of mobile terminals (MTs), and the upper-level exact potential game (UEPG) maximizes the utility of MEC servers. At the lower-level, the MTs are divided into delay-sensitive MTs (DSMTs) and non-delay-sensitive MTs (NDSMTs) according to their different quality of service (QoS) requirements. The competition among DSMTs and NDSMTs in different service areas to share the limited available wireless and computational resources is formulated as a dynamic evolutionary game. The dynamic replicator is applied to obtain the evolutionary equilibrium so as to minimize the costs imposed on MTs. At the upper level, the exact potential game is formulated to solve the resource sharing problem among MEC servers and the resource sharing problem is transferred to nonlinear complementarity. The existence of Nash equilibrium (NE) is proved and is obtained through the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition. Simulations illustrate that substantial performance improvements such as average utility and the resource utilization of MEC servers can be achieved by applying the proposed HGRAA. Moreover, the cost of MTs is significantly lower than other existing algorithms with the increasing size of input data, and the QoS requirements of different kinds of MTs are well guaranteed in terms of average delay and transmission data rate.

This study investigated the influence of reading time while building a closed concept map on reading comprehension and retention. It also investigated the effect of having access to the text during closed concept map creation on reading comprehension and retention. Participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk (N =101) read a text, took an after-text test, and took part in one of three conditions, “Map & Text”, “Map only”, and “Double Text”, took an after-activity test, followed by a two-week retention period and then one final delayed test. Analysis revealed that higher reading times were associated with better reading comprehension and better retention. Furthermore, when comparing “Map & Text” to the “Map only” condition, short-term reading comprehension was improved, but long-term retention was not improved. This suggests that having access to the text while building closed concept maps can improve reading comprehension, but long term learning can only be improved if students invest time accessing both the map and the text.

A hybrid Retinex-based image enhancement algorithm is proposed to improve the quality of images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in this paper. Hyperparameters of the employed multi-scale Retinex with chromaticity preservation (MSRCP) model are automatically tuned via a two-phase evolutionary computing algorithm. In the two-phase optimization algorithm, the Rao-2 algorithm is applied to performing the global search and a solution is obtained by maximizing the objective function. Next, the Nelder-Mead simplex method is used to improve the solution via local search. Real UAV-taken images of bad quality are collected to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. Meanwhile, four famous image enhancement algorithms, Multi-Scale Retinex, Multi-Scale Retinex with Color Restoration, Automated Multi-Scale Retinex, and MSRCP are utilized as benchmarking methods. Meanwhile, two commonly used evolutionary computing algorithms, particle swarm optimization and flower pollination algorithm, are considered to verify the efficiency of the proposed method in tuning parameters of the MSRCP model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves the best performance compared with benchmarks and thus the proposed method is applicable for real UAV-based applications.

In distributed processing for communication services, a proper server selection scheme is required to reduce delay by ensuring the event occurrence order. Although a conservative synchronization algorithm (CSA) has been used to achieve this goal, an optimistic synchronization algorithm (OSA) can be feasible for synchronizing distributed systems. In comparison with CSA, which reproduces events in occurrence order before processing applications, OSA can be feasible to realize low delay communication as the processing events arrive sequentially. This paper proposes an optimal server selection scheme that uses OSA for distributed processing systems to minimize end-to-end delay under the condition that maximum status holding time is limited. In other words, the end-to-end delay is minimized based on the allowed rollback time, which is given according to the application designing aspects and availability of computing resources. Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme reduces the delay compared to the conventional scheme.

In this study, we propose a method to estimate body composition-related health indicators (e.g., ratio of body fat, body water, and muscle, etc.) using video-based gait analysis. This method is more efficient than individual measurement using a conventional body composition meter. Specifically, we designed a deep-learning framework with a convolutional neural network (CNN), where the input is a gait energy image (GEI) and the output consists of the health indicators. Although a vast amount of training data is typically required to train network parameters, it is unfeasible to collect sufficient ground-truth data, i.e., pairs consisting of the gait video and the health indicators measured using a body composition meter for each subject. We therefore use a two-step approach to exploit an auxiliary gait dataset that contains a large number of subjects but lacks the ground-truth health indicators. At the first step, we pre-train a backbone network using the auxiliary dataset to output gait primitives such as arm swing, stride, the degree of stoop, and the body width — considered to be relevant to the health indicators. At the second step, we add some layers to the backbone network and fine-tune the entire network to output the health indicators even with a limited number of ground-truth data points of the health indicators. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the other methods when training from scratch as well as when using an auto-encoder-based pre-training and fine-tuning approach; it achieves relatively high estimation accuracy for the body composition-related health indicators except for body fat-relevant ones.

We propose a spectrum regeneration and demodulation method for multiple direct RF undersampled real signals by using a new algorithm. Many methods have been proposed to regenerate the RF spectrum by using undersampling because of its simple circuit architecture. However, it is difficult to regenerate the spectrum from a real signal that has a band wider than a half of the sampling frequency, because it is difficult to include complex conjugate relation of the folded spectrum into the linear algebraic equation in this case. We propose a new spectrum regeneration method from direct undersampled real signals that uses multiple clocks and an extended algorithm considering the complex conjugate relation. Simulations are used to verify the potential of this method. The validity of the proposed method is verified by using the simulation data and the measured data. We also apply this algorithm to the demodulation system.
