  • Computational Complexity and Performance of RAKE Receivers with Channel Estimation for DS-UWB

    In this paper, we evaluate the computational complexity and the performance of the RAKE receivers for the Direct Sequence--Ultra Wideband (DS-UWB) with considering the accuracy of channel estimation in a multipath channel. As RAKE receivers for DS-UWB, we consider the maximal-ratio combining (MRC)-RAKE, the minimum mean square error (MMSE)-RAKE, and the MRC-RAKE-Equalizer that is the MRC-RAKE followed by a liner equalizer. Generally, if the channel estimation is perfect, as the number of fingers or taps increases, the performance of each receiver is improved, however the computational complexity of each receiver increases. In practice, the channel estimation is not perfect. The channel estimation error makes their performances degraded. Therefore, the performances of the RAKE receivers depend on the accuracy of channel estimation. Consequently, we evaluate the computational complexities and the Bit Error Rates (BERs) of MRC-RAKE, MMSE-RAKE, and MRC-RAKE-Equalizer with considering the accuracy of channel estimation for DS-UWB. We show that the accuracy of channel estimation affects the BER of each receiver significantly. We also show that when the accuracy of channel estimation is high, MRC-RAKE-Equalizer can achieve the better BER than MMSE-RAKE with less computational complexity, while MMSE-RAKE can achieve the better BER than MRC-RAKE-Equalizer when the accuracy of channel estimation is low.

  • The Development of a Computational Environment for Cellular Automata

    In this paper, we introduce and describe the computational environment that we have developed for cellular automata (CA). CA are powerful methods to understand and simulate the behavior of complex systems such as traffic jams, fluid crosscurrents, and natural disasters. In CA method, modeling of such a system or a phenomenon is to define a transition function, which determines local interactions, so-called "CA rules." However, no systematic method for design of CA rules has been established. We require a CA simulator for "trial and error" in study of modeling based on CA. Furthermore, the CA simulation environment that does not require special knowledge of a user for parallel processing is desired. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive system that enables us to expedite the design of local rules and to accelerate simulations. We have implemented two kinds of simulators differing in their characteristics to improve both design efficiency and execution speed. The major difference between the two simulators is whether a source code is compiled or not. The source code is described in DORA language the authors have designed for the system. DORA language is designed for describing CA rules simply.

  • Speculative Computation and Abduction for an Autonomous Agent

    In this paper, we propose an agent architecture for a combination of speculative computation and abduction. Speculative computation is a tentative computation when complete information for performing computation is not obtained. We use a default value to complement such incomplete information. Unlike usual default reasoning, the real value for the information can be obtained during the computation and the computation can be revised on the fly. In the previous work, we applied this technique to handling distributed problem solving under incomplete communication environments in the context of multi-agent systems and proposed correct procedures in abductive logic programming in terms of perfect model semantics. In the previous work, however, we regarded assumptions as defaults and used these assumptions for speculative computation. Thus, we could not perform hypothetical reasoning, that is, the original usage of abduction. In this paper, we extend our framework so that speculative computation and abduction can be both performed. As a result, our procedure becomes an extension of the abductive procedure developed by Kakas and Mancarella augmented by dynamic belief revision mechanism about outside world.

    The site attenuation is an important parameter to evaluate an anechoic chamber. The ray-tracing method has been applied to analyze it. However, the lowest applicable frequency has not been cleared. In this paper, the FDTD method has been applied to analyze the site attenuation of a compact anechoic chamber from 30 MHz to 250 MHz, and this has been compared with the calculated one by the ray-tracing method to evaluate the lowest frequency where the ray-tracing method could be applied. The compact anechoic chamber, where the absorbers are placed on the all walls, has been used for the calculation. For FDTD analysis, the dipole antenna and the absorber have been modeled by using the large cell, whose size is larger than the diameter of the antenna element. For verification, the site attenuation of a compact anechoic chamber has been measured and compared with the calculated values by the FDTD method and the ray-tracing method. As the results, the calculated values by the ray-tracing method have larger deviation than the ones by the FDTD method when the frequency is less than 180 MHz.

    In this letter, we propose a simplified step-by-step decoding algorithm for t-error-correcting binary Bose-Chaudhuri- Hocquenghem (BCH) codes based on logical analysis. Compared to the conventional step-by-step decoding algorithm, the computation complexity of this decoder is much less, since it significantly reduces the matrix calculation and the operations of multiplication.

  • Novel Array Antenna Assisted Adaptive Modulation Scheme for Fast Fading Channel

    In this paper, we propose a novel array antenna-assisted adaptive modulation scheme for fast fading environments. Although adaptive modulation is an efficient technique capable of establishing high bit-rate digital transmission in a multi-path fading environment, it is sensitive to the fast time variation of the channel because of difficulties in tracking the channel state. To resolve this problem, an array antenna-based Doppler spread compensator was applied to the adaptive modulation scheme. Computer simulation results indicated that the proposed scheme can markedly improve the bit error rate and throughput performance for the region in which the maximum Doppler frequency normalized by the packet length is up to 0.1.

    In this paper, we propose an adaptive compensation algorithm to compensate cell delay variation (CDV) occurring during ATM/TDMA transition in a satellite ATM network. The proposed CDV compensation algorithm uses two types of additional information: cell position information (Cp)--indicating the number of cells (N) arriving within a control unit time (Tc) and positions of cells at a given time--and the number of cells in bursts--to take into account the characteristics of localized bursts. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we performed a computer simulation based on an OPNET environment, using the Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) traffic model and assessed its effectiveness from varied standpoints. The results of the performance testing indicate that the proposed algorithm, while requiring significantly less additional information than previous CDV compensation algorithms, is able to more efficiently compensate CDV in localized burst traffic than the previous ones.

    This paper describes a distributed video transcoding system that can simultaneously transcode an MPEG-2 video file into various video coding formats with different rates. The transcoder divides the MPEG-2 file into small segments along the time axis and transcodes them in parallel. Efficient video segment handling methods are proposed that minimize the inter-processor communication overhead and eliminate temporal discontinuities from the re-encoded video. We investigate how segment transcoding should be distributed to obtain the shortest total transcoding time. Experimental results show that implementing distributed transcoding on 10 PCs can decrease the total transcoding time by a factor of about 7 for single transcoding and by a factor of 9.5 for simultaneous three kinds of transcoding rates.

  • Optimal Design of Complex Two-Channel IIR QMF Banks with Equiripple Response

    The optimal design of complex infinite impulse response (IIR) two-channel quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks with equiripple frequency response is considered. The design problem is appropriately formulated to result in a simple optimization problem. Therefore, based on a variant of Karmarkar's algorithm, we can efficiently solve the optimization problem through a frequency sampling and iterative approximation method to find the complex coefficients for the IIR QMFs. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is to form an appropriate Chebyshev approximation of a desired response and then find its solution from a linear subspace in several iterations. Finally, simulation results are presented for illustration and comparison.

    This paper presents a systematic methodology for the system-level assessment of signal integrity and electromagnetic compatibility effects in high-speed communication and information systems. The proposed modeling strategy is illustrated via a case study consisting of a critical coupled net of a complex system. Three main methodologies are employed for the construction of accurate and efficient macromodels for each of the sub-structures typically found along the signal propagation paths, i.e. drivers/receivers, transmission-line interconnects, and interconnects with a complex 3D geometry such as vias and connectors. The resulting macromodels are cast in a common form, enabling the use of either SPICE-like circuit solvers or VHDL-AMS equation-based solvers for system-level EMC predictions.

  • An Evolutionary Approach for User-Oriented Web Search with Mobile Devices

    Wireless Internet technologies have been developing and users are now able to access more information anywhere through small screen mobile devices. However, due to the limits of cost, bandwidth and screen size in a wireless environment, it is important to minimize interactions between a mobile user and his handheld device, as well as the amount of data transmitted. In this paper we present an interactive evolutionary approach for user-oriented Web search by using mobile devices. To verify this approach, a series of experiments has been conducted. The results show that our approach can allocate the information a user needs within only a few user-system interactions. It substantially reduces the number of retrieved pages a user has to visit. This is especially an important benefit to mobile users.

  • Design Method for 2-Channel Signal Word Decomposed Filters with Minimum Output Error and Their Effective VLSI Implementation

    This paper proposes hardware-efficient VLSI architectures for 2-channel signal word decomposed filters (2-ch SWDFs) and their design method in consideration of the implemented circuit size. By consideration of the circuit size in design method, 2-ch SWDFs with a minimum output error among SWDFs whose size is equal to or smaller than a specification can be designed. Canonical Signed Digit expressions are used to effectively represent the filter coefficients of the SWDFs in order to make its circuit size small. Through precise analysis of the internal structures, circuit size can be accurately estimated. Some design examples show that the proposed method can design filters whose output error is about -12 dB lower than that of the linear FIR filters. Compared to an exhaustive search method, our method is much faster and can design filters whose output errors are only about 2 dB more.

    Animation video is becoming very popular with the availability of low cost computing resources. The cell animation is a popular method, used for producing animation video. In order to efficiently encode these videos, conventional video codecs, such as AutoDesk Animation Pro FLC, Intel Indeo 5, and MPEG-4 can be used to achieve high compression. However, when cell animation videos are compressed at very low bit rate by these traditional codecs, objectionable artifacts, e.g., false color, blurred contours, and blocking artifact, are severely occurred. In this paper, we propose an efficient compression method for cell animation images. The proposed method employs hybrid coding scheme which includes intraframe and interframe coding modes. The intraframe mode consists of color quantization, adaptive differential pulse code modulation, forward classification, and Golomb-Rice coding. The interframe coding consists of block-based techniques and exploits the characteristics of motion. Simulation results show that the proposed method provides superior performance over AutoDesk Animation Pro FLC, MPEG-1, Intel Indeo 5, and MPEG-4 standards.

    An Insertion-Deletion system, first introduced in [1], is a theoretical computing model in the DNA computing framework based on insertion and deletion operations. When insertion and deletion operations work together, as expected, they are very powerful. In fact, it has been shown that even the very restricted Insertion-Deletion systems can characterize the class of recursively enumerable languages [1]-[4]. In this paper, we investigate the computational power of Insertion-Deletion systems and show that they preserve the computational universality without using contexts.

  • Experimental Study on Compensation of Array Element Pattern of Collinear Dipole Array Sensor

    A compensation method of the array element pattern is proposed to measure EM field distribution on an observation plane located several wavelengths away from electronic devices in a short time. Numerical and experimental data of the 3 and 5 element collinear dipole array sensors are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

    This paper presents a new algorithm for efficiently detecting silhouette voxels in volume objects. The high performance of the algorithm is partly due to its ability to exclude all the gradient vectors not associated with silhouettes from further consideration. A judicious re-arrangement of the voxels enhances its efficiency. We have studied its performance through computer simulations. The results indicate a manifold improvement over conventional algorithms. A parallel version of the algorithm has also been described in the paper. Its performance is quite understandably impressive.

  • Low-Speed Sliding Test on New Cu-Sn-Based Composite Materials

    The author prepared new composition of Cu-Sn based composite materials containing lamellar solid lubricants, and measured their performance with focus on contact resistance and the coefficient of friction using a low-speed tribo-meter. Among three kinds of composite materials, the composite material containing 26wt.% of total solid lubricants was lower in both of contact resistance and the coefficient of friction and showed stable characteristics compared with those containing 25wt.% and 35wt.% respectively. The author analyzed the characteristics of these materials using several techniques including BSE image, element analysis through EPMA, and mapping analysis, and examined why the composite material containing 26wt.% of total solid lubricants showed higher performance.

    The demand for intra- and interdomain routing for multilayered networks such as those using generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) is strong. One of the features that is peculiar to GMPLS networks is that because several different domains, such as those of IP, ATM, and optical fiber, are combined with each other hierarchically, various routing policies, which are sometimes independent from underlying domains and sometimes taking the underlying domains' policies into consideration, are required. For example GMPLS's lower layer LSPs like lambda LSP are expected to be established independently before the upper-layer LSPs, like IP and MPLS LSPs, are established in the underlying domains. Another requirement for the GMPLS interdomain routing is lightening the burden for selecting the interdomain route, because there are a lot of demands to interconnect many GMPLS domains. In order to satisfy these demands, we propose a path computation server (PCS) that is special for the intra/interdomain routing of GMPLS networks. As a counterpart of the proposed interdomain routing, it is now becoming popular to apply OSPF to the GMPLS interdomain routing. Therefore, we compared the proposed interdomain routing with OSPF, and show the applicability of the routing to GMPLS networks.

  • Resource Management in Layer 1 Virtual Private Networks

    This paper proposes resource management in Layer 1 Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). We have been proposing Layer 1 VPNs that provide layer 1 services to multiple customers over the single optical network with per VPN control and management capabilities. We have proposed two resource management models for Layer 1 VPNs, which constitute different class of services. One is the shared model, where resources are shared among VPNs. The other is the dedicated model, where resources are explicitly pre-assigned to each VPN. In this paper, after introducing an overview of Layer 1 VPNs, we evaluate several path computation algorithms for these two models focusing on the multi layer network scenario. In the shared model, there are several existing studies for non-VPN cases, but considerations for VPN cases are not investigated. This paper evaluates algorithms originally proposed for non-VPN cases for use in VPN cases. Simulation results show that the path computation algorithm that works as saving layer 1 resources achieves better resource sharing effect. In the dedicated model, the problem is identical to non-VPN cases. There is one conventional algorithm, but amount of available resources is not well considered. We propose a novel path computation algorithm. Simulation results show effectiveness of our proposed algorithm against the conventional algorithm. Furthermore, resource usage efficiency of two resource management models is compared. We analyze and propose applicability of resource management models.

  • Extraction of Desired Spectra Using ICA Regression with DOAS

    Recently, DOAS (differential optical absorption spectroscopy) has been used for nondestructive air monitoring, in which the LS (least squares) method is used to calculate trace gas concentrations due to its computational simplicity. This paper applies the ICA (independent component analysis) method to the DOAS system of air monitoring, since the LS method is insufficient to recover the desired spectra perfectly due to sparsity characteristic. If the sparsity of reference spectra in the DOAS system imposes the assumption of independence, the ICA algorithm can be used. The proposed method is used to regress the observed spectrum on the estimates of the reference spectra. The ICA algorithm can be seen as a preprocessing method where the ICs of the references are used as the input in the regression. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in simulation studies using synthetic data.
