  • Cascaded Co-Channel Interference Cancelling and Diversity Combining for Spread-Spectrum Multi-Access over Multipath Fading Channels

    We propose a direct-sequence spread-spectrum multi-access (DS/SSMA) receiver that incorporates multipath diversity combining and multistage co-channel interference (CCI) cancellation. This receiver structure which is more resistant to the near/far problem essentially removes more and more of the CCI with each successive cancellation stage. With the assumption that perfect channel estimates have been obtained, we analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of this system when received powers are unequal. Results show that the BER can approach that of a single-user case as the number of CCI cancellation stages increases.

    A new theoretical propagation model for wideband fading channel simulation in mobile radio environments is presented. It is based on a path model which produces scattered waves according to Poisson process. The typical properties of transmission characteristics deduced from the theoretical and experimental studies are taken in the model. Using the propagation model, an analytical method for the near-far problem of CDMA in mobile radio environments is proposed. An example of the analysis by means of a simulation is also presented.

  • The Realities and Myths of Multipath Propagation

    In this paper, some misconceptions about "multipath propagation" are discussed for those propagation engineers, who are not familiar with the close relationship between multipath propagation and a communication system in a mobile/portable radio communication environment. It is shown that believed facts about multipath propagation are not always true. Namely, it is well-known that multipath propagation is undesirable if a conventional sample-and-decision receiver is assumed. It is not well-recognized that it can be a desirable phenomenon if a sophisticated communication system uses adaptive equalization, anti-multipath modulation, or spread spectrum communication, for example. On the other hand, it is widely accepted that root mean square (rms) multipath delay spread is a good measure of bit-error-rate performance, i.e., as rms delay spread gets larger, bit-error-rate generally gets worse. However, it is pointed out that this is not always true, especially in propagation conditions with very long-delayed multipath signals. In short, it is the purpose of this paper to show examples that the facts believed to be true sometimes turn out to be false, unless we pay attention to both aspects of propagation and system design in the field of mobile/portable radio communications. In fact, for highly efficient communication systems design, propagation, antenna and system factors should be taken into account simultaneously.

    Theoretical and experimental evaluations of the horizontal rotating and tilting of the base station antenna beam show that these techniques are effective in reducing delay spread. Result show good agreement between predicted and measured values.

    Let C{c1, , cm} be a family of subsets of a finite set S{1, , n}, a subset S of S is a co-hitting set if S contains no element of C as a subset. By using an O((log n)2) time EREW PRAM algorithm for a maximal independent set problem (MIS), we show that a maximal co-hitting set for S can be computed on an EREW PRAN in time O(αβ(log(nm))2) using O(n2 m) processors, where αmax{|cii1, , n} and βmax{|djj1, , n} with dj{ci|jci}. This implies that if αβO((log(nm))k) then the problem is solvable in NC.

    This paper mainly concentrates on recent studies on land mobile propagation, considering new trends of the progress of digital and personal land mobile communications. High speed digital transmission for millimeter-wave indoor communication is of another current interest. Microcellular propagation in urban areas and indoor propagation are major research targets at present days. Multipath propagation characteristics such as delay-profiles becomes more and more important measuring items, and some signal processing methods like MUSIC method have been widely introduced to improve the time resolution against the limit of available radio bandwidth. Path-loss characteristics in mobile propagation are extended to the path-loss prediction and are going to be applied to cellular system design in connection with the design of directional base-station antennas. Another recent topic is an extension of target frequency bands for mobile propagation studies, which are spreading from VHP, UHF and SHF to EHF bands.

    In this paper, we will define Kleene-Stone logic functions which are functions F: [0, 1]n[0, 1] including the intuitionistic negation into fuzzy logic functions, and they can easily represent the concepts of necessity and possibility which are important concepts of many-valued logic systems. A set of Kleene-Stone logic functions is one of the models of Kleene-Stone algebra, which is both Kleene algebra and Stone algebra, as same as a set of fuzzy logic functions is one of the models of Kleene algebra. This paper, especially, describes some algebraic properties and representation of Kleene-Stone logic functions.

    We propose a new type of Graph Rewriting Systems (GRS) that provide a theoretical foundation for using the reduction method which plays an important role on analyze network reliability. By introducing this GRS, several facts were obtained as follows: (1) We clarified the reduction methods of network reliability analysis in the theoretical framework of GRS. (2) In the framework of GRS, we clarified the significance of the completeness in the reduction methods. (3) A procedure of recognizing complete systems from only given rewriting rules was shown. Specially the procedure (3) is given by introducing a boundary graph (B-Graph). Finally an application of GRS to network reliability analysis is shown.

    The research for rational quadratic Bézier curve and its applications for generating conics and curve-fitting have been reported in some papers. But rational cubic Bézier curves, for the complexity of computation of the weight parameters and the difficulty of the shape control, have very rarely been applied up to the present. In this letter, we proposed a new method to generate a rational cubic Bézier curve. For a given point S (assuming the curve pass it) and a given value of the intermediate variable t in the point, we can compute the weight parameters of the rational cubic Bézier curve according to the relation of the control polygon and the given point, and can generate the curve. Then we explained the relation among shape of curve, given point S and intermediate varisble t. As the samples of using the method, we showed the generation of the gear-shape curve, symmetrical curve and spindle-shape curve, etc.. Finally, we discuss the application of this method for curve-fitting.

  • Outdoor Wideband Mobile-Radio Propagation Studies in Europe

    Several research institutions in Europe have developed set-ups for wide-band mobile radio communication measurements. The performance and evaluation has been coordinated in the framework of the cooperation in the field of scientific and technical research within the committees COST 207 COST 231. New parameters have been defined to improve the insight into performance limits of digital radio communication systems which are caused by propagation phenomena. The definitions of these new parameters are presented in the paper. Channel sounders developed in Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, France and Germany are described. They are based on considerably different technical principles for evaluation and recording of the measured results. A few results gained in European measurement campaigns are also presented.

  • Isolated Word Recognition Using Pitch Pattern Information

    This paper describes a new technique for isolated word recognition that uses both pitch information and spectral information. In conventional methods, words with similar phoneme features tend to be misrecognized even if their phonemes are accented differently because these methods use only spectral information. It is possible to improve recognition accuracy by considering pitch patterns of words. Many phonetically-similar Japanese words are classified by pitch patterns. In this technique, a pitch pattern template is produced by averaging pitch patterns obtained from a set of words which have the same accent pattern. A measure for word recognition is proposed. This measure based on a combination of the phoneme likelihood and the pitch pattern distance which is the distance between a pitch pattern of an input speech and pitch pattern templates. Speaker-dependent word recognition experiments were carried out using 216 Japanese words uttered by five male and five female speakers. The proposed technique reduces the recognition error rate by 40% compared with the conventional method using only phoneme likelihood.

    Theoretical prediction of propagation is required for the future urban mobile communications, in order to make possible precise and universal prediction for arbitrary conditions. The necessity and the fundamental concept of theoretical prediction are introduced, and the theoretical prediction of mean field strength in urban areas is reviewed and discussed. Theoretical method is important particularly in prediction of multipath delay characteristics, in relation to the prediction of error rates in digital mobile radio communications.

    Compared to multi-level signature file techniques, PSF (Partitioned Signature File) technique has less processing overhead by its characteristics of a simple file organization. In a multi-processor environment, the PSF technique also has an advantage that queries can be processed in parallel effectively by allocating one or more partitions to each processor. Main point of the PSF technique is a partitioning scheme based on a key selection. In this paper, an n-BFK (n-Bounded Floating Key) partitioning scheme is proposed, in which the number of segments for a key selection is bounded by n. The cost model is developed for the performance evaluation of the proposed scheme. By performance comparison with the existing schemes, the efficiencies of the proposed scheme are shown with respect to a disk access cost, a signature reduction ratio, and an uniformity of workload.

  • Design Considerations for High Frequency Active Bandpass Filters

    This paper describes design considerations for high frequency active BPFs up to 100 MHz. The major design issues for high frequency active filters are the excess phase shift in the integrators and high power consumption of the integrators. Typical bipolar transistor based transconductors such as the Gilbert gain cell and the linearized transconductor with two asymmetric emitter-coupled pairs have been analyzed and compared. It has been clarified that the power consumption of the linearized transconductor can be much smaller than that of the Gilbert gain cell because of its high transconductance to working current ratio while maintaining a signal to noise ratio of the same order. A simple high-speed fully differential linearized transconductor cell is proposed with emitter follower buffers and resistive loads for excess phase compensation. A novel gyrator based transformation for the LC ladder BPF has been introduced. This transformation has resulted in a structure with simple capacitor-coupled active resonators which exactly preserves the original transfer function. A fourth order 10.7 MHz BPF IC was designed using the proposed transconductors. It was fabricated and has demonstrated the usefulness of the proposed approach. In addition, an experimental 100 MHz second order BPF IC with Q=14 has been successfully implemented indicating the potential of the proposed approach.

    A multicarrier modulation is considered as an effective technique in high speed digital transmission under the multipath fading. In this paper, we theoretically analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance of the multicarrier modulation/differential detection scheme, and show the trade-offs between the BERs and the number of carriers or the guard period to clarify the optimum values to minimize the BER in the number of carriers and the guard period.

    This paper analyzes the performance of the capacity controlled radio system under a frequency selective fading environment. This system controls the number of modulation levels according to the number of active subscribers. In the analysis, we consider the capacity controlled system either with or without adaptive equalizer. As the results of analysis, it is clarified that the system is superior to the conventional fixed capacity system, and can be considered as a good countermeasure for multi-path fading. And it is found that there exists a synergistic effect due to capacity controlling and adaptive equalizing.

    An adaptive restoration algorithm is developed for binary images degraded nonadditively with flip noises. The true image is assumed to be a realization of a Markov Random Field (MRF) and the nonadditive flip noises are assumed to be statistically independent and asymmetric. Using the Expectation and Maximization (EM) method and approximating the Baum's auxiliary function, the degraded image is restored iteratively. The algorithm is implemented as follows. First, the unknown parameters and the true image are guessed or estimated roughly. Second, using the true image estimate, the Baum's auxiliary function is approximated and then the noise and MRF parameters are reestimated. To reestimate the MRF parameters the Maximum Pseudo-likelihood (MPL) method is used. Third, using the Iterated Conditional Modes (ICM) method, the true image is reestimated. The second and third steps are carried out iteratively until by some ad hoc criterion a critical point of EM algorithm is approximated. A number of simulation examples are presented which show the effectiveness of the algorithm and the parameter estimation procedures.

    We apply Fahlman and Lebiere's (FL) algorithm to network synthesis and incremental learning by making use of already-trained networks, each performing a specified task, to design a system that performs a global or extended task without destroying the information gained by the previously trained nets. Investigation shows that the synthesized or expanded FL networks have generalization ability superior to Back propagation (BP) networks in which the number of newly added hidden units must be pre-specified.

  • Note on Stability-Preserving Perturbations in Linear State Space Models
