  • Active Frequency Selective Surfaces Using Incorporated PIN Diodes

    In this paper, active frequency selective surfaces (FSS) having a squared aperture with a metal plate loading are described. Active FSS elements using switched PIN diodes are discussed with an equivalent circuit model. A unit cell consists of a square aperture element with metal island loading and one PIN diode placed at the upper gap, considering the vertical polarization. The electromagnetic properties of the active FSS structure are changed by applying dc bias to the substrate, and they can be estimated by the equivalent circuit model of the FSS structure and PIN diode. This active FSS design enables transmission to be switched on or off at 2.3 GHz, providing high transmission when the diodes are in an off state and high isolation when the diodes are on. The equivalent circuit model in the structure is investigated by analyzing transmission and reflection spectra. Measurements on active FSS are compared with numerical calculations. The experimentally observed frequency responses are also scrutinized.

    We propose Adaptive Resource Allocation for the Partial Block MC-CDMA (ARA-PB/MC-CDMA) system. The ARA-PB/MC-CDMA system aims to improve total throughput performance and frequency efficiency across various channel conditions. It adaptively changes the number of blocks to improve the throughput performance and frequency efficiency according to the Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR). Therefore, the proposed system supports various Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for various SIR values.

  • Application of Insensitivity Analysis of Coverage Processes to Wireless Sensor Networks

    Randomly distributed wireless sensors used to monitor and detect a moving object were investigated, and performance measures such as the expected time/space detection ratio were theoretically analyzed. In particular, the insensitivities (robustness) of the performance measures to the conditions of the distributed wireless sensors and the target object were analyzed. Robust explicit equations for these performance measures were derived, and these equations can be used to calculate them without knowing the sensing area shape or the target object trajectory. These equations were applied to the following two applications. (1) They were used to estimate the impact of active/sleeping state schedule algorithms of sensors on the expected ratio of the time that the sensors detect the target object during its movement. The results were used to identify the active state schedule that increases the expected time ratio. (2) They were also applied to a sensor density design method that uses a test object. This method can be used to ensure that the expected time ratio that at least one sensor can detect the target satisfies the target value without knowing the sensing area size or the movement of the target object.

    An adaptive per-survivor processing maximum likelihood sequence estimation (PSP-MLSE) using state-space based recursive least-squares (RLS) is proposed for rapidly time varying multi-path fading channels. Unlike PSP-MLSE using Kalman filtering, it does not require the knowledge of model statistics, and with an aid of state-space modeling, it has a robust performance to the fade rate, compared to PSP-MLSE using conventional RLS.

    Because of the fact that mobile communication channel changes by time, it is necessary to employ adaptive channel equalizers in order to combat the distorting effects of the channel. Least Mean Squares (LMS) algorithm is one of the most popular channel equalization algorithms and is preferred over other algorithms such as the Recursive Least Squares (RLS) and Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) when simplicity is the dominant decision factor. However, LMS algorithm suffers from poor performance and convergence speed within the training period specified by most of the standards. The aim of this study is to improve the convergence speed and performance of the LMS algorithm by adjusting the step size using fuzzy logic. The proposed method is compared with the Channel Matched Filter-Decision Feedback Equalizer (CMF-DFE) [1] which provides multi path propagation diversity by collecting the energy in the channel, Minimum Mean Square Error-Decision Feedback Equalizer (MMSE-DFE) [2] which is one of the most successful equalizers for the data packet transmission, normalized LMS-DFE (N-LMS-DFE) [3] , variable step size (VSS) LMS-DFE [4] , fuzzy LMS-DFE [5],[6] and RLS-DFE [7] . The obtained simulation results using HIPERLAN/1 standards have demonstrated that the proposed LMS-DFE algorithm based on fuzzy logic has considerably better performance than others.

    In this paper, based on interleaved technique, we present a new method of constructing zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets. For any perfect sequence of length m(2k+1) with m > 2, k ≥ 0 and an arbitrary Hadamard matrix of order T > 2, the proposed construction can generate new optimal ZCZ sequence sets in which all the sequences are cyclically distinct.

    A novel algorithm for source location by utilizing the time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) of a signal received at spatially separated sensors is proposed. The algorithm is based on the constrained total least-squares (CTLS) technique and gives an explicit solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has high location accuracy and its performance is close to the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB).

    We define a new quaternary cyclotomic sequences of length 2p, where p is an odd prime. We compute the autocorrelation of these sequences. In terms of magnitude, these sequences have the autocorrelations with at most 4 values.

  • Broadband Equalizer Design with Commensurate Transmission Lines via Reflectance Modeling

    In this paper, an alternative approach is presented, to design equalizers (or matching networks) with commensurate (or equal length) transmission lines. The new method automatically yields the matching network topology with characteristic impedances of the commensurate lines. In the implementation process of the new technique first, the driving point impedance data of the matching network is generated by tracing a pre-selected transducer power gain shape, without optimization. Then, it is modelled as a realizable bounded-real input reflection coefficient in Richard domain, which in turn yields the desired equalizer topology with line characteristic impedances. This process results in an excellent initial design for the commercially available computer aided design (CAD) packages to generate final circuit layout for fabrication. An example is given to illustrate the utilization of the new method. It is expected that the proposed design technique is employed as a front-end, to commercially available computer aided design (CAD) packages which generate the actual equalizer circuit layout with physical dimensions for mass production.

    The insoluble Prussian-blue (PB) pigment becomes possible to disperse in aqueous solution by covering their surfaces with ferrocyanide anions. The thin film fabricated with these water-dispersible PB nanoparticles shows evident electrochromic color changes between +0.8 V to -0.4 V on an ITO substrate. The mass change of the thin film during an electrochemical reaction is measured by means of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). According to the EQCM analysis, the filling rate of water-dispersible PB nanoparticles in the film is 37.7% as compared with an assumed perfect crystal PB film.

    It is essential to ensure a satisfactory QoS (Quality of Service) when offering a speech communication system with a noise reduction algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new obejective test methodology for noise-reduced speech that estimates word intelligibility by using a distortion measure. Experimental results confirmed that the proposed methodology gives an accurate estimate with independence of noise reduction algorithms and noise types.

    This work proposes new features to improve the pathological voice quality classification performance. They are the means, the variances, and the perturbations of the higher-order statistics (HOS) such as the skewness and the kurtosis. The HOS-based features show meaningful differences among normal, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 voices classified in the GRBAS scale. The jitter, the shimmer, the harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), and the variance of the short-time energy are utilized as the conventional features. The performances are measured by the classification and regression tree (CART) method. Specifically, the CART-based method by utilizing both the conventional features and the HOS-based ones shows its effectiveness in the pathological voice quality measurement, with the classification accuracy of 87.8%.

    We have developed novel humidity and gas detector system using quartz crystal oscillators (QCO) deposited with cellulose Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films. We have realized stable humidity detection by the LB-based QCO sensor for extremely high humidity subsequent to the water dipping condition. Also, specific gaseous molecules such as alcohol could have been sensitively detected.

    A novel fast lock-in digitally controlled phase-locked loop (DCPLL) is proposed in this letter. This DCPLL adopts a novel frequency search algorithm to reduce the lock-in time. Furthermore, to reduce the power consumption, the frequency divider is reused as a frequency detector during the frequency acquisition, and reused as a time-to-digital converter module during the phase acquisition. To verify the proposed algorithm and architecture, a DCPLL design is implemented by SMIC 0.18 µm 1P6M CMOS technology. The Spice simulation results show that the DCPLL can achieve frequency acquisition in 3 reference cycles and complete phase acquisition in 11 reference cycles when locking to 200 MHz. The corresponding power consumption of DCPLL is 3.71 mW.

  • An Analytical and Experimental Study of Super-Seeding in BitTorrent-Like P2P Networks

    With the popularity of BitTorrent-like P2P applications, improving its performance has been an active research area. Super-seeding, a special upload policy for the initial seeder, improves the efficiency in producing multiple seeds and reduces the uploading bytes of content initiators, thus being highly expected as a promising solution for improving downloading performance while decreasing uploading cost. However, the overall impacts of super seeding upon BitTorrent performance remain a question and have not been analyzed so far in literature. In this paper, we present an analytical and experimental study over the performance of super-seeding scheme. We attempt to answer the following questions: whether and how much super-seeding saves uploading cost, whether the overall downloading time is decreased by super-seeding, and in which circumstances super-seeding performs worse. Based on the seeding process, our analytical study gives formulas on the new piece distribution time, average downloading time and minimum distribution time for heterogeneous P2P file distribution system with super-seeding. Robust evidence supporting the use (or not) of super-seeding is given based on our worldwide Internet experiments over wide distribution of 250 PlanetLab nodes. With a well-designed experimental scenario, we study the overall download time and upload cost of super seeding scheme under varying seed bandwidth and peer behavior. Results show that super-seeding can save an upload ratio of 20% and does help speeding up swarms in certain modes. Tentative conclusions about the effectiveness of super-seeding and its optimal working circumstances are given with inside mechanism analyzed and negative factor identified. Our work not only provides reference for the potential adoption of super-seeding in BitTorrent and other P2P applications, but also much insights for the tussle of enhancing of Quality of Experience (QoE) and saving cost for a large-scale BitTorrent-like P2P commercial application.

    The thresholding results for gray level images depend greatly on the thresholding method applied. However, this letter proposes a histogram equalization-based thresholding algorithm that makes the thresholding results insensitive to the thresholding method applied. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed thresholding algorithm.

    In this letter, new families of binary low correlation zone (LCZ) sequences based on the interleaving technique and quadratic form sequences are constructed, which include the binary LCZ sequence set derived from Gordon-Mills-Welch (GMW) sequences. The constructed sequences have the property that, in a specified zone, the out-of-phase autocorrelation and cross-correlation values are all equal to -1. Due to this property, such sequences are suitable for quasi-synchronous code-division multiple access (QS-CDMA) systems.

    In video streaming applications over the Internet, TCP-friendly rate control schemes are useful for improving network stability and inter-protocol fairness. However, they do not always guarantee a smooth video streaming. To simultaneously satisfy both the network and user requirements, video streaming applications should be quality-adaptive. In this paper, we propose a new quality adaptation mechanism to adjust the quality of congestion-controlled video stream by controlling the frame rate. Based on the current network condition, it controls the frame rate of video stream and the sending rate in a TCP-friendly manner. Through a simulation, we prove that our adaptation mechanism appropriately adjusts the quality of video stream while improving network stability.

    This paper proposes a MAC protocol for presence information discovery in ubiquitous networks. The proposed protocol is designed for proactive discovery in which wireless devices periodically broadcast packets containing presence information. The protocol is based on Framed Aloha. The objective of the protocol is to assure the discovery time of single-hop neighbors considering wireless collisions and also power consumption. In this paper, we show that the proposed protocol is able to assure specified discovery time in distributed networks with random topology.

    We propose a feasible V-BLAST detector based on modified Householder QRD (M-H-QRD) over spatially correlated fading channel, which can almost match the performance of the V-BLAST algorithm with much lower complexity and better numerical stability. Compared to the sorted QRD (S-QRD) detector, the proposed detector requires a smaller minimum word-length to reach the same value of error floor for fixed-point (FP) numerical precision despite no significant performance difference for floating-point machine precision. All these advantages make it attractive when implemented using FP arithmetic.
