  • Orientation-Controlled Films of Thiophene/Phenylene Co-Oligomers

    We deposited thin films of thiophene/phenylene co-oligomers (TPCOs) onto poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) layers that were friction-transferred on substrates. These films were composed of aligned molecules in such a way that their polarizations of emissions and absorbances were larger along the drawing direction than those perpendicular to that direction. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) fabricated with these films indicated large mobilities, when the drawing direction of PTFE was parallel to the channel length direction. The friction-transfer technique forms the TPCO films that indicate the anisotropic optical and electronic properties.

    We report a real time method to monitor the chemical reaction in microdroplets, which contain an organic dye, 5(6)-carboxynaphthofluorescein and a CdSe/ZnS quantum dot using fluorescence spectra. Especially, the relationship between the droplet size and the reaction rate of the two reagents was investigated by changing an injection speed.

    In this letter, we propose a new intra-field deinterlacing algorithm based on an edge dependent weighted filter (EDWF). The proposed algorithm consists of three steps: 1) calculating the gradients of three directions (45°, 90°, and 135°) in the local working window; 2) achieving the weights of the neighboring pixels by exploiting the edge information in the pixel gradients; 3) interpolating the missing pixel using the proposed EDWF interpolator. Compared with existing deinterlacing methods on different images and video sequences, the proposed algorithm improves the peak signal-to-noise-ratio (PSNR) while achieving better subjective quality.

    In this paper, we propose a face representation approach using multi-orientation Log-Gabor local binary pattern (MOLGLBP) for realizing face recognition under facial expressions, illuminations and partial occlusions. Log-Gabor filters with different scales (frequencies) and orientations are applied on Y, I, and Q channel image in the YIQ color space respectively. Then Log-Gabor images of different orientations at the same scale are combined to form a multi-orientation Log-Gabor image (MOLGI) and two LBP operators are applied to it. For face recognition, histogram intersection metric is utilized to measure the similarity of faces. The proposed approach is evaluated on the CurtinFaces database and experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach is effectiveness against two simultaneous variations: expression & illumination, and illumination & occlusion.

    Feature Selection (FS) is widely used to resolve the problem of selecting a subset of information-rich features; Fuzzy-Rough QuickReduct (FRQR) is one of the most successful FS methods. This paper presents two variants of the FRQR algorithm in order to improve its performance: 1) Combining Fuzzy-Rough Dependency Degree with Correlation-based FS merit to deal with a dilemma situation in feature subset selection and 2) Hybridizing the newly proposed method with the threshold based FRQR. The effectiveness of the proposed approaches are proven over sixteen UCI datasets; smaller subsets of features and higher classification accuracies are achieved.

    A quartz-crystal-microbalance (QCM) and surface-plasmon-resonance (SPR) hybrid sensor was prepared, and the depositions of polymer electrolytes layer-by-layer (LbL) films were observed in situ. The estimated thicknesses obtained from the QCM method were different from those obtained from the SPR method. This was estimated to be caused by film swelling and water contained in the film.

    The problem of coexistence between IEEE 802.11g based wireless LANs (WLANs) and IEEE 802.15.4 based wireless personal area networks (WPANs) in the 2.4GHz band is an important issue for the operation of a home energy management system (HEMS) for smart grids. This paper proposes a coexistence scheme that is called a Hybrid station aided coexistence (HYSAC) scheme to solve this problem. This scheme employs a hybrid-station (H-STA) that possesses two types of network device functions. The scheme improves the data transmission quality of the WPAN devices which transmit energy management information such as power consumption. The proposed HYSAC scheme employs WLAN control frames, which are used to assign WPAN system traffic resources. Moreover, we propose a coexistence method to achieve excellent WLAN throughput where multiple WPANs coexist with a WLAN. We theoretically derive the performance of the proposed scheme by considering the QoS support in WLAN and show that the results of the simulation and theoretical analysis are in good agreement. The numerical results show that the HYSAC scheme decreases the beacon loss rate of WPAN to less than 1% when the WLAN system consists of 10 STAs under saturated traffic conditions. Furthermore, the WLAN throughput of the proposed synchronization method is shown to be 30.6% higher than that of the HYSAC scheme without synchronization when the WLAN that consists of 10 STAs coexists with four WPANs.

    Up until now, the best public key encryption with multi-dimensional range query (PKMDRQ) scheme has two problems which need to be resolved. One is that the scheme is selectively secure. The other is that the time of decryption is long. To address these problems, we present a method of converting a predicate encryption supporting inner product (IPE) scheme into a PKMDRQ scheme. By taking advantage of this approach, an instance is also proposed. The comparison between the previous work and ours shows that our scheme is more efficient over the time complexity. Moreover, our scheme is adaptively secure.

    A processing system with multiple field programmable gate array (FPGA) cards is described. Each FPGA card can interconnect using six I/O (up, down, left, right, front, and back) terminals. The communication network among FPGAs is scalable according to user design. When the system operates multi-dimensional applications, transmission efficiency among FPGA improved through user-adjusted dimensionality and network topologies for different applications. We provide a fast and flexible circuit configuration method for FPGAs of a multi-dimensional FPGA array. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we assess performance and power consumption of a circuit that calculated 3D Poisson equations using the finite difference method.

    In this paper, we modify the Legendre-Sidelnikov sequence which was defined by M. Su and A. Winterhof and consider its exact autocorrelation values. This new sequence is balanced for any p,q and proved to possess low autocorrelation values in most cases.

    With the rapid growth of high performance ICT (Information Communication Technologies) devices such as smart phones and tablet PCs, multitasking has become one of the popular ways of using mobile devices. The reasons users have adopted multitask operation are that it reduces the level of dissatisfaction regarding waiting time and makes effective use of time by switching their attention from the waiting process to other content. This is a good solution to the problem of waiting; however, it may cause another problem, which is the increase in traffic volume due to the multiple applications being worked on simultaneously. Thus, an effective method to control throughput adapted to the multitasking situation is required. This paper proposes a transmission rate control method for web browsing that takes multitasking behavior into account and quantitatively demonstrates the effect of service by two different field experiments. The main contribution of this paper is to present a service design process for a new transmission rate control that takes into account human-network interaction based on the human-centered approach. We show that the degree of satisfaction in relation to waiting time did not degrade even when a field trial using a testbed showed that throughput of the background task was reduced by 40%.

    Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has great advantages of high spectrum efficiency and robustness against multipath fading. When the received signal is deeply suppressed by deep fading, path loss and shadowing, the received carrier power must be increased in order to avoid degrading communication quality and provide high reliability at the cost of lower system throughput. A repetition coding is very attractive in providing the high reliability with simple configuration and the low decoding complexity of maximal ratio combining. In order to analytically confirm the effectiveness of repetition coded OFDM systems, we theoretically analyze the effect of increasing the number of repetitions (diversity branches) and acquiring both time and frequency diversity gain, and then derive a closed-form equation of average bit error rate (BER) to easily but precisely evaluate the performance.

    We introduce a graphical calculus for multi-qutrit systems (the qutrit ZX-calculus) based on the framework of dagger symmetric monoidal categories. This graphical calculus consists of generators for building diagrams and rules for transforming diagrams, which is obviously different from the qubit ZX-calculus. As an application of the qutrit ZX-calculus, we give a graphical description of a (2, 3) threshold quantum secret sharing scheme. In this way, we prove the correctness of the secret sharing scheme in a intuitively clear manner instead of complicated linear algebraic operations.

    In several important applications, we often encounter with the computation of a Toeplitz matrix vector product (TMVP). In this work, we propose a k-way splitting method for a TMVP over any field F, which is a generalization of that over GF(2) presented by Hasan and Negre. Furthermore, as an application of the TMVP method over F, we present the first subquadratic space complexity multiplier over any finite field GF(pn) defined by an irreducible trinomial.

    Primitive linear recurring sequences over rings are important in modern communication technology, and character sums of such sequences are used to analyze their statistical properties. We obtain a new upper bound for the character sum of primitive sequences of order n over the residue ring modulo a square-free odd integer m, and thereby improve previously known bound mn/2.

    A monolithic frequency synthesizer with wide tuning range, low phase noise and spurs was realized in 0.13,$mu$m CMOS technology. It consists of an analog PLL, a harmonic-rejection mixer and injection-locked frequency doublers to cover the whole 6--18,GHz frequency range. To achieve a low phase noise performance, a sub-sampling PLL with non-dividers was employed. The synthesizer can achieve phase noise $-$113.7,dBc/Hz@100,kHz in the best case and the reference spur is below $-$60,dBc. The core of the synthesizer consumes about 110,mA*1.2,V.

    This paper analyzes the correlation between various acoustic features and perceptual voice quality similarity, and proposes a perceptually similar speaker selection technique based on distance metric learning. To analyze the relationship between acoustic features and voice quality similarity, we first conduct a large-scale subjective experiment using the voices of 62 female speakers and perceptual voice quality similarity scores between all pairs of speakers are acquired. Next, multiple linear regression analysis is carried out; it shows that four acoustic features are highly correlated to voice quality similarity. The proposed speaker selection technique first trains a transform matrix based on distance metric learning using the perceptual voice quality similarity acquired in the subjective experiment. Given an input speech, acoustic features of the input speech are transformed using the trained transform matrix, after which speaker selection is performed based on the Euclidean distance on the transformed acoustic feature space. We perform speaker selection experiments and evaluate the performance of the proposed technique by comparing it to speaker selection without feature space transformation. The results indicate that transformation based on distance metric learning reduces the error rate by 53.9%.

    In recent years, there are many collision accidents between vehicles due to human errors. As one of countermeasures against the collision accidents, automotive radar systems have been supporting vehicle drivers. By the automotive radar mounted on the vehicle, it is possible to recognize the situation around the vehicle. The ranging with automotive infrared laser radar is very accurate, and able to understand the object existence in the observation around the vehicle. However, in order to grasp the situation around the vehicle, it is necessary to be aware of the attribute of the detected object. The information obtained by the automotive radar vehicle is only the direction and the distance of the object. Thus, the recognition of the attribute of the detected object is very difficult. In this paper, we propose a novel vehicle information acquisition method by using 2D reflector code. Through experiments, we show that the proposed method is able to detect 2D reflector code and is effective for vehicle information acquisition.

    ITS R&D includes wide variety of research area such as mechanical engineering, road engineering, traffic engineering, information and communication engineering, and electrical engineering. In spite of initiatives across the variety of engineering is essential to solve the problems of practical social systems, it is difficult to collaborate among engineering. Based on the joint research of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers and the Institute of Electrical Engineers held at the Great East Japan Earthquake, this paper discusses about necessity of collaboration among academies on ITS R&D. International collaboration is also important for ITS R&D. Asian countries could share the same problems and solutions, since many of mega cities exist in Asia region and they suffers from heavy traffics. Therefore, we need to discuss the common solution to our problems.

    Feedback with carry shift registers (FCSRs) implemented using Galois representation have been found to have a weakness called LFSRization. It leads to powerful attacks against the stream ciphers based on them. A new representation called ring representation has been proposed to avoid the attacks. It was considered to circumvent the weaknesses of Galois FCSRs. This correspondence presents a class of ring FCSRs, which meet the implementation criteria, but are still possible to maintain linear behavior for several clock cycles. Their LFSRization probability and how to improve their security are also mentioned.
