    A new method using new test structure, which is connected 15.4 million MOS transistor, for evaluating extrinsic oxide breakdown is proposed. The active gate area which is needed to predict reliability will be shown. And by using this new method, activation energy not only for the intrinsic breakdown but also for the extrinsic breakdown are obtained.

  • Adaptive Cross-Spectral Technique for Acoustic Echo Cancellation

    An Acoustic echo canceller has problems adaptating under noisy or double-talk conditions. The adaptation process requires a precise identification of the temporarily changed room impulse response. To do this, both minimizing the step size parameter of the Least Mean Square (LMS) method to be as small as possible and giving up on updating the adaptive filter coefficients have been considered. This paper describes an adaptive cross-spectral technique that is robust to adaptive filtering under noisy or double-talk conditions and for colored signals such a speech signal. The cross-spectral technique was originally developed to measure the impulse response in a linear system. Here we apply in the adaptive cross-spectral technique to solve the acoustic echo cancelling problem. This cross-spectral technique takes the ensemble average of the cross spectrum between input and error signals and the averaged cross spectrum is divided by the averaged power spectrum of the input signal to update the filter coefficients. We have confirmed that the echo signal is suppressed by about 15 dB even under double-talk conditions. We also explain that this method has a systematic error due to using a short time block for estimating the room impulse response. Then we investigate overlapping every last half block by the following first half block in order to reduce the effect of the systematic error. Finally, we compare our method with the Frequency-domain Block LMS (FBLMS) method because both methods are implemented in the frequency domain using a short time block.

    In this article we present a survey of medical image processing with the stress on applications of image generation and pattern recognition / understanding to computer aided diagnosis (CAD) and surgery (CAS). First, topics and fields of research in medical image processing are summarized. Second the importance of the 3D image processing and the use of virtualized human body (VHB) is pointed out. Thirdly the visualization and the observation methods of the VHB are introduced. In the forth section the virtualized endoscope system is presented from the viewpoint of the observation of the VHB with the moving viewpoints. The fifth topic is the use of VHB with deformation such as the simulation of surgical operation, intra-operative aids and image overlay. In the seventh section several topics on image processing methodologies are introduced including model generation, registration, segmentation, rendering and the use of knowledge processing.

  • New Technologies Doing Much for Solving the EMC Problem in the High Performance Digital PCBs and Equipment

    This paper is consisting of the two novel EMC technologies that we have been developed in our laboratory. The first is the technology for measuring the RF (Radio Frequency) nearby magnetic field and estimation of the RF current in the printed circuit board (PCB) by using the small loop antenna with multi-layer PCB structure developed by our laboratory. I introduce the application of our small loop antenna with its physical structure and the analysis of the nearby magnetic field distribution of the printed circuit board applying the discrete Wavelet analysis. We can understand the behavior of the digital circuit in detail, and we can also take measures to meet the specification about the electromagnetic radiation from the digital circuit from the higher order of priority by using these technologies. The second is our proposing novel technology for reducing the electromagnetic radiation from the digital equipment by taking notice of the improvement of the de-coupling in the PCB. We confirmed the remarkable effect of this technology by redesigning the motherboard of the small-sized computer.

    A trinary-phased array, in which a phase quantization unit of phase shifters is 120 degrees is examined. The phase quantization unit of 120 degrees is the roughest value in practical phased array applications. Despite its rough phase quantization, the sidelobe level of less than -9 dB is attained by a genetic algorithm approach.

    We propose and demonstrate for the first time in our knowledge, an optical switch circuit architecture furnishing with the "Bridge and Switch" function, conforming to ITUT-T Recommendation G. 841 Annex A for optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ADMs) in WDM four-fiber ring networks. This function enables optical ADMs to revert automatically from the switching state to their idle state just after the recovery of failure, that is indispensable for the extra traffic accommodation to enhance efficiency of the network operation. We have developed the optical ADM nodes employing the proposed optical switch circuit for each wavelength, arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs) and Er-doped fiber amplifiers. In the demonstration, transmission characteristics of the cascaded optical ADM nodes without regenerative repeaters have been verified at first. We have confirmed the ring protection and the automatic protection switching (APS) sequence which includes the automatic reversion in the optical ADM nodes with proposed optical switch circuits.

    This paper proposes a 3-stage ATM switch architecture that uses optical WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) grouped links and dynamic bandwidth sharing. The proposed architecture has two features. The first is the use of WDM technology which makes the number of cables used in the system proportional to system size. The second is the use of dynamic bandwidth sharing among WDM grouped links. This prevents the statistical multiplexing gain offered by WDM from falling even if switching system becomes large. A performance evaluation confirms the scaleability and cost-effectiveness of the proposed architecture. It is scaleable in terms of the number of cables and admissible load. We show how the appropriate wavelength signal speed can be determined to implement the switch in a cost-effective manner. Therefore, the proposed architecture will suit future high-speed multimedia ATM networks.

  • ASADAL/PROVER: A Toolset for Verifying Temporal Properties of Real-Time System Specifications in Statechart

    Critical properties of real-time embedded systems must be verified before these systems are deployed as failing to meet these properties may cause considerable property damages and/or human casualties. Although Statechart is one of the most popular languages for modeling behavior of real-time systems, proof systems and analysis tools for Statechart so far are in research and do not fully support the semantics of the original Statechart, or have limited capabilities for proving real-time properties. This paper introduces a toolset ASADAL/PROVER for verifying temporal properties of Statechart extended with justice and compassion properties. ASADAL/PROVER is composed of two subsystems, RTTL-Prover and Model-Checker. The RTTL-Prover converts Statechart specifications into real-time temporal logic (RTTL) formulas of Ostroff, and then checks if the formulas satisfy a temporal property (also in RTTL) using theorem proving techniques. The Model-Checker supports verification of a predefined set of real-time properties using a model checking technique. The RTTL-Prover can support verification of any real-time properties as long as they can be specified in RTTL and, therefore, messages generated by the tool are general and may not be of much help in debugging Statechart specifications. The Model-Checker, however, can provide detailed information for debugging. ASADAL/PROVER has been applied successfully to some experimental systems. One of on-going researches in this project is to apply the symbolic model-checking technique by[3]to support Statecharts with a much larger global-state space. We are also extending the types of temporal properties supported by the Model-Checker.

    In this paper, the computational issue in the problem of learning Bayesian belief networks (BBNs) based on the minimum description length (MDL) principle is addressed. Based on an asymptotic formula of description length, we apply the branch and bound technique to finding true network structures. The resulting algorithm searches considerably saves the computation yet successfully searches the network structure with the minimum value of the formula. Thus far, there has been no search algorithm that finds the optimal solution for examples of practical size and a set of network structures in the sense of the maximum posterior probability, and heuristic searches such as K2 and K3 trap in local optima due to the greedy nature even when the sample size is large. The proposed algorithm, since it minimizes the description length, eventually selects the true network structure as the sample size goes to infinity.

  • Improvement of E-Beam Observability by Testing-Pad Placement in LSI Design Layout

    A novel testing-pad placement method has been developed to greatly improve E-beam observability for multi-level wiring LSIs. In the method, testing pads connecting a lower-metal-layer wire with a top-metal-layer electrode are positioned in the design layout, making removal of the insulator unnecessary. The method features i) pad placement in unoccupied areas in mask patterns to avoid increases in chip size, ii) minimized pad size through the use of stacked vias so that the pads can be placed on as many wire nodes as possible, iii) placement as far as possible from the nearby wires to avoid local field effects, and iv) allocation of one testing pad to one circuit node to minimize the number of testing pads. These measures give us a practical pad-placement method, that has little influence on LSI design. It was shown that the proposed method yielded a dramatic improvement of observability from 13-33% to 88-99% in actual layouts of 0.25-µm ASICs with 20k, 120k, and 390k gates. It was also found that local field effects from nearby wires are negligible for almost all the testing pads. This approach will enable the use of E-beam testing on LSIs made with 0.25-µm technology and the even more sophisticated process technologies to come.

    The OMG have made the trading service one of the basic CORBA services. A specification has been drawn up (OMG RPF5) but seems to have some problems in terms of scalability and complexity. This paper introduces an architecture called Contextual Clustering Using Service Properties (CCUSP) that deals with issues of scalability. It uses a contextual approach to clustering object service offers based on property commonalities. It also handles issues of scalability of trader federation. An ontological approach is to be used, however not covered in this paper. An implementation of the specialisation graph context model is detailed.

    This paper proposes two numerical methods to solve the optimal problem of contrast enhancement in the cross-pol and co-pol channels. For the cross-pol channel case, the contrast (power ratio) is expressed in a homogeneous form, which leads the polarimetric contrast optimization to a distinctive eigenvalue problem. For the co-pol channel case, this paper proposes a cross iterative method for optimization, based on the formula used in the matched-pol channel. Both these numerical methods can be proved as convergent algorithms, and they are effective for obtaining the optimum polarization state. Besides, one of the proposed methods is applied to solve the optimal problem of contrast enhancement for the time-independent targets case. To verify the proposed methods, this paper provides two numerical examples. The results of calculation are completely identical with other authors', showing the validity of the proposed methods.

    Informally, private information retrieval for k 1 databases (k-PIR) is an interactive scheme that enables a user to make access to (separated) k replicated copies of a database and privately retrieve any single bit out of the n bits of data stored in the database. In this model, "privacy" implies that the user retrieves the bit he is interested in but releases to each database nothing about which bit he really tries to get. Chor et. al. proposed 2-PIR with communication complexity 12 n1/32 that is based on the covering codes. Then Ambainis recursively extended the scheme by Chor et. al. and showed that for each k 2, there exists k-PIR with communication complexity at most ckn1/(2k-1) some constant ck > 0. In this paper, we relax the condition for the covering codes and present time-efficient 2-PIR with communication complexity 12 n1/3. In addition, we generally formulate the recursive scheme by Ambainis and show that for each k 4, there exists k-PIR with communication complexity at most ck' n1/(2k-1) for some constant ck' << ck.

    We present a method for power and delay optimization by input reordering. We observe that the reordering has a significant effect on the power dissipation of the gate which drives the reordered gate. This is because the input capacitance depends on the signal values of other inputs. This property, however, has not been utilized for power reduction. Previous approaches focus on the reduction of the power dissipated by internal capacitances of the reordered gate. We propose a heuristic algorithm considering the total power consumed in the driving gate and the reordered gate. Experimental results using 30 benchmark circuits show that our method reduces the power dissipation in all the circuits by 5.9% on average. There is a possibility that power dissipation is reduced by 22.5% maximum. In the case of delay and power optimization, our method reduces delay by 6.7% and power dissipation by 5.3% on average.

  • Joint Low-Complexity Blind Equalization, Carrier Recovery, and Timing Recovery with Application to Cable Modem Transmission

    We present a receiver structure with joint blind equalization, carrier recovery, and timing recovery. The blind equalizer employs a decomposition transversal filtering technique which can reduce the complexity of convolution to about a half. We analyze the performance surface of the equalizer cost function and show that the global minima correspond to perfect equalization. We also derive proper initial tap settings of the equalizer for convergence to the global minima. We describe the timing recovery and the carrier recovery methods employed. And we describe a startup sequence to bring the receiver into full operation. The adaptation algorithms for equalization, carrier recovery, and timing recovery are relatively independent, resulting in good operational stability of the overall receiver. Some simulation results for cable-modem type of transmission are presented.

  • Effect of Express Lots on Production Dispatching Rule Scheduling and Cost in VLSI Manufacturing Final Test Process

    we evaluate the effect of express lots on production dispatching rule scheduling and cost in VLSI manufacturing final test process. In the assignment of express lots, we make comparisons of two rules, First In First Out (FIFO) rule which is widely used and WEIGHT+RPM rule which considers the time required for jig and temperature exchanges, the remaining processing time of the machine in use and the lot waiting time in queue. When using FIFO rule, the test efficiency begins to deteriorate and the test cost per chip begins to increase, if the content of express lots exceeds 15%. Furthermore, for 30% of express lots' content, the number of total processed lots decreases by 19% and the test cost per chip increases by 22% in comparison to the cases including no express lots. For WEIGHT+RPM rule, however, the test efficiency does not deteriorate and the test cost per chip does not increase even if the content of express lots is increased up to 50%. When we use WEIGHT+RPM rule, Express Lots Tolerances (ELTs), defined as the maximum content of express lots which permits the deterioration of the system characteristics by 5%, are about three times as high as ones when using FIFO rule. It is also found that WEIGHT+RPM rule maintains higher ELTs against the changes in the numbers of planned chips and prepared jigs as compared with FIFO rule.

    Although threshold key-recovery systems for the discrete log based cryptosystems such as the ElGamal scheme have been proposed by Feldman and Pedersen , no (practical) threshold key-recovery system for the factoring based cryptosystems such as the RSA scheme has been proposed. This paper proposes the first (practical) threshold key-recovery systems for the factoring based cryptosystems including the RSA and Rabin schemes. Almost all of the proposed systems are unconditionally secure, since the systems utilize unconditionally secure bit-commitment protocols and unconditionally secure VSS.

    In this paper, we analyze the inverse scattering problem by a new deterministic method called "Source and Radiation Field Solution," which has the merit that both the source and the radiation field can be treated at the same time, the effect of which has already shown in ordinary scattering problems.
