  • A Minimum Bandwidth Guaranteed Service Model and Its Implementation on Wireless Packet Scheduler

    In this paper, we introduce a concept of minimum bandwidth guaranteed service model for mobile multimedia. In this service model, service is defined in the context of the guaranteed minimum bandwidth and the residual service share. Each flow under this service model is guaranteed with its minimum bandwidth and provided with more in proportion to the residual service share if there is leftover bandwidth. The guaranteed minimum bandwidth assures a flow to keep minimum tolerable quality regardless of the network load, while the leftover bandwidth enhances the quality of service according to the application's adaptivity and the user's interest. We show that the minimum bandwidth guaranteed service model could be implemented by a two-folded wireless packet scheduler consisting of a guaranteed scheduler and a sharing scheduler. Wireless channel condition of each flow is considered in scheduling so that wireless resource can be distributed only to the flows of good channel state, improving total wireless link utilization. We evaluate the service model and the scheduling method by simulation and implementation.

  • Forward Link Performance of Combined Soft and Hard Handoff in Multimedia CDMA Systems

    The soft handoff is widely adopted in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems for its many advantages mainly resulting from site diversity. However, in the forward link, other cell interference can be increased by soft handoff, decreasing system capacity. In future mobile systems, provision for the sufficient forward link capacity is very important since the forward link load is much higher than the reverse link load in mobile multimedia services such as Internet access. In this paper, we consider a combined handoff strategy in which voice services are provided with soft handoff whereas data services are supported with hard handoff. We analyze the effect of handoff method on the forward link performance. The performance measures we use are the outage probability of the bit energy to noise density ratio and the capacity based on the outage probability. As a result, we show that the combined handoff is very useful in CDMA cellular networks supporting both voice and data services simultaneously.

  • Analysis of SIR-Based Downlink Beamforming

    Transmit beamforming is a promising way to increase the downlink capacity of wireless networks. Since all users are coupled via their radiation patterns, the beamforming vectors must be optimized along with power control. It is necessary to balance the signal-to-interference levels according to individual QoS requirements. This problem leads back to the minimization of the infinity-norm of a certain vector and has first been studied by Gerlach and Paulraj in [1]. It has been assumed that the optimum solution can be obtained by minimizing the 1-norm instead, thereby leading to a new problem, which is generally easier to handle. The analytical and numerical results in this paper, however, indicate that this conjecture is generally not valid. We characterize the case where the 1-norm solution also solves the infinity-norm problem. In particular, it is shown that for the special case of a 2-user scenario, both optimization problems are indeed equivalent and a closed-form solution can be given. The analytical results provide new insights into the problem of coupled downlink beamforming and offer a useful approach to the design of efficient and reliable algorithms.

  • An Efficient Approximate Algorithm for Finding Paths with Two Additive Constraints

    The problem of finding a path with two additive constraints, in particular finding a path that satisfies both the cost and the delay constraints, is called multi-constrained path (MCP) problem in the literature. In this paper, we explore the MCP problem based on the idea of single mixed weight --a mixed weight for each link is first obtained by combining its delay and cost, and then Dijkstra's algorithm is used to find the corresponding shortest path. Given two infeasible paths, it can be theoretically proved that a better path can possibly be found if we choose an appropriate parameter to construct the mixed weight. An approximate algorithm is thus proposed to solve the MCP problem. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that this algorithm can make a correct judgment whether there is a feasible path or not with a very high probability even in the strict case where the delay bound is between the delays of the least delay path and the least cost path, while the cost bound is between the costs of the two paths. On the other hand, the time complexity of this algorithm is very small since it only needs to execute Dijkstra's algorithm a limited number of times. The excellent performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by a large number of experiments on networks of different sizes.

  • Three-Phased Traffic Conditioner for Guaranteeing Throughput Assurance in Differentiated Services Networks

    This paper proposes three-phased traffic conditioner (3PTC) to be installed at edge routers in Differentiated Services (DiffServ) networks. 3PTC ensures that Assured Service (AS) flows are supplied with the throughput assurance, which stems from alleviating the impact of the size of TCP reserved rate, UDP/TCP interaction, Round Trip Time (RTT) and number of microflows. 3PTC is composed of token bucket phase, writing probability (WP) calculation phase and queue management phase. Computer simulation results show that 3PTC guarantees throughput assurance and provides end users with expected service levels.

  • The SCED Service Discipline with O(1) Complexity for Deadline Calculation

    In order for a service discipline to be used for guaranteed service networks at very high speed, its overall implementation must be scalable while it provides as wide a network schedulability region as possible. From this point of view, GPS-based service disciplines provide a narrow network schedulability region while EDF-based disciplines suffer from the implementation complexities of rate-controllers and admission control. Alternatively, although service disciplines based on service-curves can provide a wider network schedulability region than GPS-based and EDF-based disciplines, they may have even worse implementation complexities than EDF-based disciplines. In this paper, we propose to employ a service discipline based on our specific service-curves. We show that our service discipline has comparable implementation complexity to GPS-based disciplines while providing the same wide network schedulability region that EDF-based disciplines can provide. In fact, this service discipline is an SCED service discipline proposed in [14]. However, our specific service-curves provide the SCED service discipline with the same network schedulability region that EDF-based disciplines can provide, O(1) complexity for deadline calculation, and O(N) complexity for admission control where N is the number of sessions.

    Laser induced boron doping of silicon is studied as a function of the laser pulse number and energy density, in a special configuration where the precursor gas (BCl3) is injected and chemisorbed on the Si surface prior to each laser pulse. In-situ optical diagnostics, based on the transient reflectivity at 675 nm, allow to control the evolution of the dopant concentration and of the doped layer thickness during the laser doping process. Samples are characterized by the four-point probe method, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). As the laser pulse number is scanned from 10 to 200 at a constant laser pulse energy, the junction depth increases from 21 to 74 nm while its sheet resistance decreases from 220 to 17 Ω/. Moreover, boron concentrations well above the solubility limit (up to 31021 cm-3 for 200 pulses) and very abrupt box-like dopant profiles are obtained. So, laser doping, in this dopant gas injection configuration, seems to be a very attractive technique to meet the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) requirements for ultra-shallow junctions.

  • An Approach to Adaptive Network

    This paper describes the concept of an adaptive network, that is, a network environment that can rapidly and autonomously adapt its behavior according to network conditions and traffic status. The user interface of the adaptive network can access any resource in the network as a memory-mapped I/O device, as if it were attached to the local bus of the user's PC. This network concept has several benefits. From the application development viewpoint, no network related programming is required, and applications do not have to be modified even if the network topologies and protocols are changed. Network maintenance and upgrading can be done anytime without having to worry about the application users, because the network itself is concealed from the applications. In addition, the reconfigurable hardware technology functions as an autonomous network control through the use of a lower-layer protocol. We developed a testbed that makes heterogeneous resources available to users and used it to demonstrate the feasibility of our concept by implementing and running some applications over it.

    Optical disk systems have been used in a wide range of applications and the performance of these systems has been improving rapidly. The optical integration is one of the important technologies of the progress of the optical pickup head in the system. It can make the optical pickup head miniature, light sized, ease to assemble, cost reduced and reliable during long time operation. In this paper, at first, merits and features of the optical integration for optical disk systems are briefly reviewed. Then, our activities on the development of the various hybrid-integrated optical devices, "Laser Couplers" are reported. Especially, the most recent results on the "Two-wavelength-beam Laser Coupler," are described in detail. It has two-wavelength laser emission/detection functions and easily realizes an ultimate solution of the optical pickup head for the DVD/CD system, now being used in "PlayStaion2. " To simplify the structure and the fabrication of this device, a new monolithic-integrated two-wavelength laser diode, called a visible and infrared laser diode, has been developed, which can be easily fabricated using only two steps of metal organic chemical vapor deposition. The structures and characteristics of this device are reported. Lastly, other recent technologies of the optical integration, including monolithically integration, near field optics and so on, are reviewed.

    Services that operate normally, independently, will behave differently when simultaneously initiated with another service. This behavior is called a feature interaction. A feature interaction, where the next state can not be determined uniquely for one event, is called a non-determinacy feature interaction. To detect the interaction, judgment has to be made as to whether the state, where the non-determinacy occurs, is reachable from the initial state or not. For the judgment, many methods have been proposed. But, still now, it is required huge computation time to judge the reachability. This paper proposes a new method to test the reachability using a little knowledge elicited beforehand. By using the proposed method computation time was reduced drastically. Besides, by applying the proposed method to a benchmark, the proposed method was confirmed to be effective and reasonable.

  • Synchronous Reservation Protocol for Variable-Sized Messages in WDM Networks

    In this paper, we propose a synchronous reservation protocol that is efficient for supporting variable-sized messages in a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based local network using a passive star topology. A control channel is used to coordinate message transmission on data channels. Time is slotted with fixed-sized slots. The network can accommodate a variable number of nodes and operate independently of the change in the number of nodes. Therefore, any "new" node can join the network anytime without network re-initialization. Moreover, with the protocol, we can avoid data channel and destination conflicts. We analyze the performance according to the variation of the end-to-end propagation delay with respect to one slot time, and validate the results by simulation.

  • Single High-Order Transverse Mode Surface Emitting Laser with Micromachined Surface Relief

    We demonstrate a single high-order transverse mode surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with narrow trenches formed on a top surface. The design and the fabrication of a single high-order mode 850 nm GaAs VCSEL with micromachined surface relief are presented. Stable single-mode operation with a side-mode suppression ratio of over 40 dB was obtained in an entire measured current range. We obtained the maximum single mode power of over 3.5 mW and a record low series resistance of below 50 Ω. In addition, a single-lobe far field pattern is demonstrated even under high-order transverse mode operation by loading phase-shift on the top surface. A coupling efficiency with optical fibers is dramatically improved.

    Various types of wavelength-selectable light sources (WSLs) and wavelength-tunable laser diodes (LDs) have been developed, and the one based on an array of distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes (LDs) has the advantage of tuning that is both simple and stable tuning. It requires only the selection of a DFB-LD and a temperature control. We report on monolithically integrated WSLs with a DFB-LD array, multimode interference (MMI) coupler, semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and electro-absorption (EA) modulator. To make them compact, we introduced microarray structures and to ensure that they were easy to fabricate, we used selective area growth. For the WSL with an integrated EA modulator, we developed a center-temperature-shift method that optimizes the detuning wavelength between the lasing wavelength and the absorption edge wavelength of the EA-modulator. Using this method, we obtained a uniform extinction ratio and were able to demonstrate error-free 2.5-Gb/s transmission over a 600-km fiber span. A CW-WSL without an EA-modulator should provide enough output power to compensate the loss caused by the external modulators, but the high-power operation of a CW-WSL is sensitive to optical feedback from the front facet. We therefore used an angled facet in our WSLs and eliminated a mode hop problem. More than 20 mW of fiber-coupled power was obtained over 23 ITU-T channels on a 50-GHz grid.

  • Theoretical Proposal of an Optical Detection System Using DFB Laser with a Very Small Aperture

    An optical detection system using a DFB laser with a very small aperture is theoretically proposed. The threshold gain level in DFB laser is sensitively varied with combined reflections by the facet and the corrugation as well as with the optical injection reflected at the surface of the optical disk. Variation of the threshold gain level is counted as the voltage change on electrodes of the laser. It is found that sensitivity of the optical detection with a well-designed DFB laser becomes six times larger than that with conventional Fabry-Perot ones. Field distribution around the small aperture is analyzed taking into account both the near-field and the radiation field. Numerical data on the voltage change are given as examples of the detection system.

    Femtosecond optical pulses were irradiated into a YBa2Cu3O7-δ strip-line of 400 µm in width in order to investigate the relationship between the laser beam power profile and the distribution of the optically generated magnetic fluxes. To homogenize the current distribution in the strip-line, a half of the strip-line was patterned into the ordered array structure of holes of 2 µm in diameter at an interval of 4 µm, and several experimental conditions were examined by changing the focal size of the pulsed laser beam at the sample surface. As a result, it was found out that the generated optical magnetic fluxes strongly depend on the power profile of the femtosecond optical pulses, and showed a possibility for the application to a laser beam profiler and the other optical devices.

    To the aim of developing industrializable low-cost electronic techniques for the compensation of non-linearities in Radio-over-Fibre networks, a semiconductor laser circuit model and a predistortion circuit configuration have been implemented and simulated. The CAD procedure illustrated indicates the steps to obtain a broadband compensation (0.4-2 GHz) of both second- and third-order distortions.

    Iterative schemes for demodulating M-ary orthogonal signaling formats in direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems are proposed and compared with the standard noncoherent matched filter receiver. Interference cancellation, i.e., (approximative) removal of the multiple access interference (MAI) by means of subtraction is studied. The considered system is similar to the uplink (reverse link) of an IS-95 system. Hence, the received signals from the concurrent users are asynchronous, and no pilot signals are available for channel estimation. A decision-directed algorithm is proposed for estimating the time-varying complex channel gains of a multipath channel. The receivers are evaluated on Rayleigh-fading channels and are shown to provide large capacity gains compared with the conventional receiver.

    Two novel linearization processes in electro-absorption-modulator (EAM) are proposed and demonstrated. These two modulation schemes are used to compensate the nonlinear component of the EAM by controlling the DC bias voltages of the each EAM separately. The simulations on the nonlinearity of EAM and linearization process are performed in both time and frequency domains. From a serially cascaded modulation simulation, a reduction of 16 dB in IMD3, 45 dB in IMD5 and the following increase of 15 dB in linear dynamic rage (LDR) are achieved. In dual-parallel modulation experiment at 8 GHz, a reduction of 23 dB in IMD3 and the following increase of 15.1 dB in LDR of are achieved compared to those of a single EAM operation.

  • Consolidation Algorithm Based on Adaptive Dynamic Threshold for Point-to-Multipoint Connections in ATM Networks

    The major concern at a branch point in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks for point-to-multipoint available bit rate (ABR) services is how to consolidate backward resource management (BRM) cells from each branch for a multicast connection. In this paper, we propose an efficient feedback consolidation algorithm based on an adaptive dynamic threshold (ADT) to eliminate consolidation noise and to reduce consolidation delay. The main idea of the ADT algorithm is that each branch point estimates the ABR traffic condition of the network through virtual queue estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed ADT algorithm can achieve a faster response in congestion status and a higher link utilization compared with the previous works.
