  • Progress in Self-Assembled Quantum Dots for Optoelectronic Device Application

    Optical properties and growth of self-assembled quantum dots (SAQDs) for optoelectronic device applications are discussed. After briefly reviewing the history of research on QD lasers, we discuss growth of InAs SAQDs including the light emission at the wavelength of 1.52-µm with a narrow linewidth (22 meV) and the area-controlled growth which demonstrates formation of SAQDs in selected local areas on a growth plane using a SiO2 mask with MOCVD growth. Then properties of the InGaAs AQDs are investigated by the near-field photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy which reveals gradually increasing continuum absorption connected with the two-dimensional-like (2D-like) wetting layer, resulting in faster relaxation of electrons due to a crossover between 0D and 2D character in the density of states. In the coherent excitation spectroscopy, the decoherence time is determined to be about 15 ps, which is well explained by the phonon induced relaxation mechanism in the SAQDs. Finally, nitride-based SAQDs and perspective of QD optical devices are also discussed.

    Most applications can adapt their coding techniques and sending rates according to the network congestion and the resource needed can be provided at the beginning of the transmission. So traditional Differentiated Services (DiffServ) model is too rigid to them. In this paper, we are seeking a balance between the relative DiffServ and the absolute DiffServ and propose a new Diffserv model, a relative Differentiated Service model with admission control, which suits the adaptive application. By providing the proportional differentiated services in core routers and loss-rate based CAC control in edge routers, we can make both the network and the users adaptive: the network is adaptive to the traffic load and the users is adaptive to the network congestion. This model is promising to the elastic but unpredictable traffic, such as IP telephony or other multimedia applications.

    The future third generation mobile communications system, named IMT-2000, is expected to provide mobile users with voice, high-rate data and their combined multi-media services with the same QoS as in the fixed networks. As a radio access standard for the IMT-2000, W-CDMA and cdma2000 have been selected in Europe and North America, respectively. In this paper, we present an analytic model of the cdma2000 data mobile servicing a connected data service. In order to do this, we first model the traffic generated at mobile by a discrete-time Batch Markovian Arrival Process (D-BMAP). Next, we model the Radio Link Protocol (RLP) Queue in the cdma2000 MAC protocol by a D-BMAP/D/1 queueing system with batch service and setup times. Finally, we analyze this queueing system and get the performance measures such as the mean delay and the loss probability. Analytic results are compared with simulation ones for accuracy.

    The differentiated services (Diffserv) architecture is a potential solution for providing quality of service (QoS) on the Internet. Most existing studies focus on providing service differentiation among few service classes. In this paper, we propose an approach which can achieve per-flow weighted fair rate allocation in a differentiated services network. Following the design philosophy of the Diffserv model, in the proposed approach core routers do not need to keep per-flow information. An edge router adjusts the transmission rate of a flow based on the feedback carried on control packets, which are inserted by the ingress edge router and returned by the egress edge router. Core routers periodically estimate the fair share rate of each virtual flow and mark the results in control packets. We use both simulations and analysis to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach. The analytical results show that our approach allows a system to converge to weighted fair rate allocations in limited time. Through the simulation results, we can further validate the analytical results, and demonstrate that better throughput can be achieved.

    We propose a frequency stabilization system for laser diodes (LD's), in which the major parameters in the stabilization process can be controlled in respond to the monitored frequency noise characteristics in real-time basis. The performance of this system was also tested through stabilizing a 35 mW visible LD. The center frequency of the LD has been stabilized by negative electrical feedback based on Pound-Drever-Hall technique. The linewidth of the LD has been reduced by adapting optical feedback from resonant confocal Fabry-Perot (CFP) cavity. The controlling parameters, especially gain levels and frequency responses of the negative electrical feedback loop can be manipulated to remove the instantaneous frequency noise by monitoring power spectral density (PSD) of the frequency error signals in the real-time basis. The achieved PSD of frequency noise of a sample LD stabilized by the present system was less than 1105 Hz2/Hz for the Fourier frequency < 10 MHz. The reduced linewidth was estimated to be narrower than 400 kHz. The achieved minimum square root of the Allan variance was 3.910-11 at τ = 0.1 msec.

    A GaInNAs alloy on GaAs substrate has been very promising for long-wavelength vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) as an active layer. In spite of many groups reported the excellent temperature characteristics of the threshold current of the GaInNAs/GaAs edge-emitting lasers, discussions of the temperature dependence of the lasing characteristics except threshold current is few. In this paper, temperature characteristics of GaInNAs lasers grown by chemical beam epitaxy (CBE) emitting at λ=1.27 µm and λ=1.30 µm were investigated in detail. The characteristic temperature (T0) ranging from 10 to 80 varies from 60 to 130 K and decreased with decreasing cavity length for shorter cavity (< 400 µm) devices. On the other hand, longer cavity (< 400 µm) devices show that the cavity length does not affect so much to T0. The internal losses did not increase with increasing temperature. On the other hand, internal quantum efficiencies decreased with increasing temperature. It is considered that non-radiative recombination center with large temperature dependence may influence the decrease of the internal quantum efficiency due to the insufficient crystal quality of GaInNAs layer. The transparency current densities were unchanged for all temperature range, however, the gain constants decreased with increasing temperature. Thus, the decrease of the gain constant is considered to be due to decreasing of gain. Unchanged both transparency current density and internal loss may also express that these temperature characteristics were not induced by carrier overflow but be done by decreasing of the gain. From the results, it is considered that the temperature dependence of the gain originated from the Fermi-Dirac distribution of carriers was dominant for the temperature characteristics of GaInNAs/GaAs lasers. Due to the temperature dependence on the gain, the T0 decreases with increasing mirror loss.

  • Thermal Response Analysis of a Tunable Laser Diode Using a Mode Density Method

    The thermal response of a tunable laser is analyzed by using a mode density method based on a Fourier-Laplace analysis. This method introduces a mode density function for mode distribution of the Fourier-Laplace transform and gives temperature time-dependency in an integral form instead of an infinite weighted summation. When symmetric structures are assumed, the mode density method gives the transient thermal response in a simple form: error functions (spherical-symmetry case) and exponential integral functions (cylindrical-symmetry case). The cylindrical-symmetry analysis was extended to the noncylindrical-symmetry model and the thermal response of the tunable laser was calculated by the mode density method. The result shows good agreement with a Fourier-Laplace analysis (deviation 2%) and experimental results. As a rough estimation, the thermal response of the laser is in proportion to the logarithm of time in some range that depends on the chip and tuning-section size of the laser.

  • 2D Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Laser Using Triangular-Lattice Structure

    A 2D photonic crystal surface-emitting laser using a triangular lattice is developed, and current-injected lasing oscillation is demonstrated. From consideration of the Bragg diffraction condition in the 2D triangular-lattice structure, it is shown that the 2D coupling phenomenon occurs in the structure. As a result of the 2D periodicity of the structure, the longitudinal mode and lateral mode can be controlled, and stable single-mode oscillation is possible over a large 2D area. The lasing mode of the structure is analyzed by calculating the photonic band diagram by the 2D plane-wave expansion method, and we show that four band edges at which the lasing oscillation can occur exist at the Γ point. Current-injected lasing oscillation is successfully demonstrated at room temperature under pulsed conditions. The threshold current density is 3.2 kA/cm2 and the lasing wavelength is 1.285 µm. From the near-field and far-field patterns, it is shown that large-area 2D (diameter 480 µm) lasing oscillation occurs in the device and the divergence angle is very narrow (less than 1.8). We also demonstrate the correspondence between the measured lasing wavelengths and calculated band diagram by comparing the polarization characteristics with the calculated distribution of the electromagnetic field. The results indicate that 2D coherent lasing oscillation occurs due to the multi-directional coupling effect in the 2D photonic crystal. Finally, we show that the polarization patterns of the lasers can be controlled by introducing artificial lattice defects from the theoretical calculation.

    Recent activities on ultrafast photonic device technology development in the Femtosecond Technology Project sponsored by NEDO are introduced. Topics include management and control of the higher order dispersions of optical fibers, ultrafast mode-locked semiconductor laser, symmetric Mach-Zehnder type all-optical switch, ultrafast serial-to-parallel signal converter and sub-picosecond wavelength switch. Challenges towards novel ultrafast switching material systems are also described.

  • High Sensitivity Radar-Optical Observations of Faint Meteors

    In order to assess the possible impacts of meteors with spacecraft, which is among major hazard in the space environment, it is essential to establish an accurate statistics of their mass and velocity. We developed a radar-optical combined system for detecting faint meteors consisting of a powerful VHF Doppler radar and an ICCD video camera. The Doppler pulse compression scheme is used to enhance the S/N ratio of the radar echoes with very large Doppler shifts, as well as to determine their range with a resolution of 200 m. A very high sensitivity of more than 14 magnitude and 9 magnitude for radar and optical sensors, respectively, has been obtained. Instantaneous direction of meteor body observed by the radar is determined with the interferometry technique. We examined the optimum way of the receiving antenna arrangements, and also of the signal processing. Its absolute accuracy was confirmed by the optical observations with background stars as a reference. By combining the impinging velocity of meteor bodies derived by the radar with the absolute visual magnitude determined by the video camera simultaneously, the mass of each meteor body was estimated. The developed observation system will be used to create a valuable data base of the mass and velocity information of faint meteors, on which very little is known so far. The data base is expected to play a vital role in our understanding of the space environment needed for designing large space structures.

    In recent years, the concept of Quality of Service (QoS) has gained attention in the network research community and its extension towards delivering QoS level assurance to sensitive applications has generally been agreed to be crucial for the longevity and usability of the Internet. On the Internet, the Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture is a general framework for the differentiated treatment of traffic aggregates in the core network. However, DiffServ does not extend to end-to-end QoS assurance. In this paper, we propose a simple resource-brokering scheme operating over a hierarchically connected internetwork of administratively-independent DiffServ-capable domains that is a simplified model of the Internet. The proposed asynchronous, multi-agent resource-brokering scheme operates locally but avoids conflicts globally. In this way, the traffic control reflects the underlying structure of the internetwork, introduces only a localized complexity thus scaling up well, and permits independent policies between the interconnected domains.

    This paper describes the adaptability of communication software through a biologically-inspired policy coordination. Many research efforts have developed adaptable systems that allow various users or applications to meet their specific requirements by configuring different design and optimization policies. Navigating through many policies manually, however, is tedious and error-prone. Developers face the significant manual and ad-hoc work of engineering an system. In contrast, we propose to provide autonomous adaptability in communication endsystem with OpenWebServer/iNexus, which is both a web server and an object-oriented framework to tailer various web services and applications. The OpenWebServer's modular architecture allows to abstract and maintain a wide range of aspects in a HTTP server, and reconfigure the system by adding, deleting, changing, or replacing their policies. iNexus is a tool for automated policy-based management of OpenWebServer. Its design is inspired by the natural immune system, particularly immune network, a truly autonomous decentralized system. iNexus inspects the current system condition of OpenWebServer periodically, measures the delivered quality of service, and selects suitable set of policies to reconfigure the system dynamically by relaxing constraints between them. The policy coordination process is performed through decentralized interactions among policies without a single point of control, as the natural immune system does. This paper discusses communication software can evolve continuously in the piecemeal way with biological concepts and mechanisms, adapting itself to ever-changing environment.

  • Adaptive Detection for CDMA Multipath Signal Based on Signature Waveform Tracking

    This paper aims to provide a robust multiuser detection structure that adaptively tracks signature waveform distortion for CDMA multipath signals. In practical wireless environment, multipath fading leads to signature waveform distortion that severely degrades the performance of the linear multiuser detectors (LMDs) designed by exploiting the original signature waveform. In what follows, an iterative algorithm is proposed to track the signature waveform perturbation. The rationale of adaptive processing is based on the subspace method and the Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) beamforming concept. Performance evaluation reveals that the proposed adaptive multiuser detection structure reduces the impact of signature waveform perturbation on the performance of the LMDs to a great extent. Moreover, the proposed iterative algorithm is near-far resistant since both the subspace method and the MVDR beamforming technique are energy independent to the interferers.

    DANSE (Dynamically Adaptive Networking Service Environment) is a new architecture for adaptive network service systems. In this paper, a framework for context-aware service construction based on DANSE architecture is presented. In DANSE, any hardware, software, information, and services that are available on a network are treated as network resources. DANSE coordinates the construction of an end user's service based on the user's requests and situation or context (i.e., user's location, schedule, co-workers, etc.). To provide users with satisfactory services, it monitors user context continuously and searches for network resources that are convenient for a target user. Moreover, it detects changes in user context and invokes service construction if needed. If the desired service is not available, alternative services are automatically constructed. With those capabilities, DANSE enables ubiquitous provision of services any time, anywhere.

  • Quality-of-Service Based Link Control Scheme for Wireless Integrated Service Communications

    A quality-of-service based link control scheme to counteract correlated channel errors for wireless multimedia communications is proposed in this paper. Both the medium access (MAC) and data link control (DLC) layers are treated. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using both analysis and simulation. The delay and jitter behaviors are examined for both the constant bit rate (CBR) traffic and variable bit rate (VBR) traffic. The throughput performance is also obtained for the available bit rate (ABR) traffic. Through numerical experiments, the proposed scheme is demonstrated to be not only robust against channel impairments but also capable of providing the desired QoS for wireless multimedia communications.

    In this letter, blind adaptive H multiuser detection is developed by employing a generalized sidelobe canceler (GSC) with and without subweight partition scheme. It is shown that the adaptive H algorithm with subweight approach has the advantages of fast convergence speed, insensitivity of dynamic estimate error, and suitability for arbitrary ambient noise over the conventional H and the RLS-based adaptive algorithms.

  • Simple Matching Algorithm for Input Buffered Switch with Service Class Priority

    We present a simple cell scheduling algorithm for an input buffered switch. The suggested algorithm is based on iSLIP and consists of request, grant and accept steps. The pointer update scheme of iSLIP is simplified in the suggested algorithm. By virtue of the new update scheme, the performance of the suggested algorithm is better than that of iSLIP with one iteration. Using computer simulations under a uniform traffic, we show the suggested algorithm is more appropriate than iSLIP for scheduling of an input buffered switch with multiple service classes.

    Topological sorting is, given with a directed acyclic graph G=(V,E), to find a total ordering of the vertices such that if (u,v)E then u is ordered before v. Instead of topological sorting, we are interested in how many total orderings exist in a given directed acyclic graph. We call such a total ordering as legal sequence and the problem of finding total number of legal sequences as legal sequence number problem. In this paper, we firstly give necessary definitions and known results obtained in our previous research. Then we give a method how to obtain legal sequence number for a class of directed acyclic graphs, extended 2-b-SPGs. Finally we discuss the complexity of legal sequence number problem for extended 2-b-SPGs.

  • Weak Normality for Nonblocking Supervisory Control of Discrete Event Systems under Partial Observation

    In this paper, we study nonblocking supervisory control of discrete event systems under partial observation. We introduce a weak normality condition defined in terms of a modified natural projection map. The weak normality condition is weaker than the original one and stronger than the observability condition. Moreover, it is preserved under union. Given a marked language specification, we present a procedure for computing the supremal sublanguage which satisfies Lm(G)-closure, controllability, and weak normality. There exists a nonblocking supervisor for this supremal sublanguage. Such a supervisor is more permissive than the one which achieves the supremal Lm(G)-closed, controllable, and normal sublanguage.

  • Novel DFT Strategies Using Full/Partial Scan Designs and Test Point Insertion to Reduce Test Application Time

    As LSIs are two-dimensional structures, the number of external pins increases at a lower rate than the corresponding increase in the number of gates on the LSI. Therefore, the number of flip-flops on a scan path increases as the density of gates on LSIs rises, resulting in longer test application times. In this paper, three novel DFT strategies aimed at reducing test application time are proposed. DFT strategy 1 is a full scan design method with test point insertion, DFT strategy 2 is a partial scan design method, and DFT strategy 3 is a partial scan design method with test point insertion. Experimental results show that these DFT strategies reduced the test application times by 45% to 82% compared with conventional full scan design methods.
