  • Operation of a Root DNS Server

    The authors have been in charge of the operation of one of the root DNS servers for more than three years. In this paper, the overview of our system to provide high availability is introduced. In the following sections, a traffic analysis system to analyze the characteristics of the DNS queries and the brief summary which may help future DNS system deployment is described.

  • Real-Time Multicast Routing with Efficient Path Selection for Multimedia Applications

    Emerging multimedia technologies introduce the prevalent multicast transmission, and the multicast tree is determined using the time-invariant network parameters. This paper addresses the time-varying multicast tree problem and presents path selection heuristics for multicast routing to determine an alternative path for real-time applications. A network is partitioned into the optimal region, the disjoint region, and the edge cutset if a branch of the multicast tree meets the un-guaranteed QoS condition. The path selection heuristics operate during the multicast session phase to efficiently select an alternative routing path containing an edge in the edge cutset to connect the multicast tree again. The source-based heuristics PS-SPT finds the path for minimal source-to-destination delay and the sharing-based heuristics PS-DDMC for minimal total cost. These path selection heuristics can efficiently provide solutions to keep the multicast transmission reliable. Simulation results also show that the proposed heuristics can provide effective good solutions for real-time multicast transmission. PS-SPT can select a path with optimal source-to-destination delay and PS-DDMC can select a path with optimal total cost.

  • Fingerprint Identification for Enhanced User Interface and for Secure Internet Services

    This paper discusses an application of fingerprint identification technology to enhanced human-machine interaction, and also to information systems, specifically to a mobile authentication terminal for secure networked services and to digital appliances. A "Fingerprint User Interface (FpUI)," exploits information regarding not only who put a finger on its sensor but which specific finger it was. With this user-friendly interface, a user can assign commands, data objects, status, or personalized settings to individual fingers. A functional architecture for a mobile authentication terminal, "Pocket-PID," with fingerprint identification capability is proposed which features an easy-to-use FpUI and high security, where the identification function is totally enclosed within the unit. This enables a user's identity authenticated without any possibility of actual fingerprint data being disclosed. The Pocket-PID facilitates implementation of networked services based on secure biometric user identification.

    Conventional adaptive array antenna processing must access signals on all of the array antenna elements. However, because the low-cost electronically steerable passive array radiator (ESPAR) antenna only has a single-port output, all of the signals on the antenna elements cannot be observed. In this paper, a technique for adaptively controlling the loaded reactances on the passive radiators, thus forming both beam and nulls, is presented for the ESPAR antenna. The adaptive algorithm is based on the steepest gradient theory, where the reactances are sequentially perturbed to determine the gradient vector. Simulations show that the ESPAR antenna can be adaptive. The statistical performance of the output SIR of the ESPAR antenna is also given.

  • Performance of Fair Queuing with In/Out Bit in Core Stateless Networks

    The differentiated services (diffserv) architecture has been proposed for implementing scalable service differentiation in the Internet. Expedited forwarding and assured forwarding have been standardized as Per-Hop Behaviors (PHB) in diffserv. Assured forwarding can be utilized to realize the service, which provides each user with a minimum guaranteed rate and a fair share of the residual bandwidth. We call it guaranteed rate (GR) service. With GR service, each packet for flow i is marked in or out based on comparison between the sending rate and the minimum guaranteed rate. When congestion occurs in networks, out packets are dropped more aggressively than in packets. Recently, several fair queuing schemes have been proposed for core stateless networks. They can achieve fairer bandwidth allocation than random early detection (RED). However, there have not been any studies that consider in/out bit usage to support GR service. This paper proposes how to extend the schemes that have been proposed for core stateless networks to allow the support of in/out bit usage. We present the performance of one of the extended schemes and compare the scheme to RED with in/out bit (RIO) in terms of fair bandwidth allocation.

  • Multiuser Detection Based on Radial Basis Function for a Multicode DS/CDMA System

    In this paper, multiuser detector (MUD) based on radial basis function (RBF) is proposed and simulated for a multicode DS/CDMA system in an AWGN and a multipath fading channels. The performance of RBF-based MUD is compared with that of many suboptimal multiuser detectors in terms of bit error probability. To obtain simulation results, importance sampling technique is employed. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the RBF-based MUD outperforms decorrelating detector, and achieves near-optimum performance under various environments. The results in this paper can be applied to design of MUD for a multicode DS/CDMA system.

    Access control plays an important role in the area of information security, which guarantees that any access to data is authorized. Hierarchical access control is a special access control model in distributed environment, in which each user protects his local data using a secret key; moreover, for any two related users ui and uj, ui can access uj's data if, and only if, ui's priority is higher than uj. Therefore, there should be a way for ui to obtain the secret key of uj if ui's priority is higher than uj. This paper presents an efficient solution to the problem. A special kind of function called secure filter is used as the building block of the proposed solution. In the solution, an authorized user can acquire correct keys efficiently and securely via secure filters. The proposed solution is also well-performed while inserting/deleting users, injecting/removing relations, and changing secret keys. Especially, only deleting users and removing relations will change some keys in the system, other operations can be performed freely without affecting other keys in the system; only secure filters need to be modified in these cases.

  • Diffserv-Based QoS over ATM Access Networks

    We have developed a new scheme to provide Diffserv-based QoS over ATM access networks. Well-known Diffserv over ATM scheme requires some extension for conventional routers with ATM interfaces. The routers must map their Diffserv classes of services into ATM QoS classes and forward IP packets into prioritized VCs based on DSCP (DiffServ Code Point). The purpose of this work is to provide Diffserv-based QoS over ATM network using conventional IP over ATM interfaces on routers. We propose DSCP snooping at ATM edge nodes, which differentiates services over a single VC between two IP domains. A prototype circuit was used to evaluate this scheme.

  • A Network-Supported Server Load Balancing Method: Active Anycast

    In server load balancing where replicated servers are dispersed geographically and accesses from clients are distributed to replicated servers, a way of distributing the accesses from clients to an adequate server plays an important role from the viewpoint of load balancing. In the paper, we propose a new network paradigm for server load balancing using active anycast. In active anycast, an end user only sends its request to group of servers using an anycast address. When this request arrives at an active router, it selects an adequate server from the viewpoint of load balancing and changes the anycast address of a packet to the unicast address of the selected server. The decision which server is the best one from the viewpoint of server load balancing is made by an active router rather than an end user, so active anycast is a network-initiated method. Simulation results show that active anycast can accomplish efficient server load balancing, even when a small part of routers are equipped with active network technology.

  • Register Constraint Analysis to Minimize Spill Code for Application Specific DSPs

    This letter presents a method which attempts to minimize the number of spill codes to resolve usage conflicts of distributed registers in application specific DSPs. It searches for a set of ordering restrictions among operations which sequentialize the lifetimes of the values residing in the same register as much as possible. Experimental results show that the proposed analysis method reduces the number of register spills into 28%.

  • All-Optical Clock Extraction at 160 Gbit/s with Monolithic Mode-Locked Laser Diodes

    We demonstrate all-optical clock recovery at 160 Gbit/s by injection locking of a 10 GHz mode-locked laser diode. Effective locking in a range of 10 MHz is observed for average input powers around -10 dBm. The timing jitter is analyzed for data rates between 10 Gbit/s and 160 Gbit/s. Beyond 40 Gbit/s, the high frequency timing jitter of the slave laser becomes of prime importance and has to be taken into account since it degrades the performance of a subsequent receiver. Increasing power penalties are found, especially beyond 80 Gbit/s.

  • The Handover Algorithm that Considers the User's Mobility Pattern in Wireless ATM

    This paper suggests the way to perform the handover by predicting the movement route of the mobile terminal by considering the movement pattern of the user. By considering the fact that the most users has the constant movement pattern, the channels needed for the handover can be reserved, and the required quality of service (QoS) is maintained during handover. The suggested algorithm makes the channel allocation schemes more efficient.

  • An Effective Flow Aggregation Algorithm for Advance Reservations

    One drawback of Integrated service architecture is the scaling problem. Therefore, flow aggregation is an important solution for supporting quality of service in large-scale network. In advance reservation, priori information of advance-reserved requests can be used for flow aggregation before their initiation time. However, an impolitic aggregation can lead to violate admission control. In this paper, we propose an effective algorithm to aggregate advance-reserved requests with guaranteed delay. The proposed algorithm not only can reduce the amount of state in core network but also minimize the bandwidth consumption. The simulation result indicates that the state in the core network can be reduced as low as 17.3% even in the worst case.

  • Core-Stateless RED Algorithm for Improving Fairness in a Best-Effort Network

    A new algorithm called core-stateless random-early-detection (CS-RED) is described. This algorithm can improve the fairness characteristics under a wide range of network conditions and is robust in terms of the setting of its control parameters. It can be used in a distributed architecture, as can the core-stateless fair-queuing (CSFQ) algorithm, so it is applicable to large-capacity backbone routers. Through a detailed evaluation, we have identified and clarified the fairness degradation problem in the CSFQ algorithm. We solved this problem by incorporating the congestion notification proposed in the RED algorithm into CSFQ; we call this hybrid CS-RED. Comparison of the fairness characteristics in a computer-simulated network using either the CS-RED or CSFQ algorithm showed that a higher level of fairness is achieved with the CS-RED algorithm under a wide variety of network conditions without degrading link utilization. Furthermore, the CS-RED algorithm uses a treatment that is more general than the penalty box mechanism to penalize unresponsive flows in best-effort networks.

  • Highly Reliable and High Power 980 nm Pump Laser Diode Module for Undersea Cable Systems

    Highly reliable and high power weakly index guided buried-stripe type 980 nm pump laser diodes developed for undersea applications are reviewed. The 10,000-hour large scale reliability tests of the first generation LD chips shows that 16.7 FIT for the random failure was confirmed at 10C with 60% confidence level at 120 mW output power. We also fabricated a FBG locked co-axial type module using a can-sealed LD with a two-lens system, which showed a stable FBG locked mode oscillation at 980 nm under the temperature range from 5C to 45C. The 5,000-hour heat cycle test of the modules reveals that the cumulative failure rate after 27 years at 10C is expected to be 0.023%. These first generation LD modules were employed in the transoceanic commercial systems such as Pacific Crossing-1 and the Japan-US cable system projects. We have also succeeded in developing the 980 nm LD for higher output operation with optimizing waveguide design. The 1000 µm long LD showed CW kink-free operation up to 545 mW optical output and a maximum output power of over 650 mW, which was limited by thermal rollover. In addition, a preliminary aging test at 350 mW optical output power at 50C has shown stable operation up to 2,300 h. We also confirmed 300 mW kink-free fiber output power with a co-axial type module with the improved coupling efficiency of approximately 78%. These figures are the highest reported operation levels for 980-nm co-axial type modules.

    The present paper discusses several promising application areas for optical data links based on high-performance vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser diodes (VCSELs). Both 850 and 980 nm emission wavelength devices realized in the GaAs-AlGaAs or InGaAs-AlGaAs material systems are considered. We show data transmission results of 10 Gb/s signals at 830 nm wavelength over a new high-bandwidth multimode silica fiber of up to 1.6 km length. The same fiber type is employed to demonstrate the first 40 Gb/s transport over 300 m distance by means of a 4-channel coarse wavelength-division multiplexing approach. A first 1 10 linear VCSEL array capable of 10 Gb/s per channel operation is presented for use in next generation parallel optical modules. To improve the singlemode emission characteristics for output power in the 5 mW range we introduce a new device concept incorporating a long monolithic cavity. For low-cost short-distance data links we investigate graded-index polymer optical fibers and report on up to 9 Gb/s transmission over a length of 100 m. Polymer waveguides are also used in an optical layer of a hybrid electrical-optical printed circuit board. Transmitted 10 Gb/s optical data over a prototype board show the potential of this new technology. Finally we present two-dimensional VCSEL arrays for highly parallel data transport on a CMOS chip level. Both 980 and 850 nm bottom emitting devices with modulation capabilities up to 12.5 Gb/s are discussed.

    We have measured the temperature dependence of the gain characteristics in 1.3-µm AlGaInAs/InP strained multiple-quantum-well (MQW) semiconductor lasers using Hakki-Paoli method. By measuring the temperature dependences of the peak gain value and the gain peak wavelength, we evaluated the temperature dependences of the threshold current and the oscillation wavelength, respectively. The small temperature dependence of the threshold current in AlGaInAs/InP lasers is caused by the small temperature dependence of the transparency current density, which is represented by the characteristic temperature TJtr of 116 K. In AlGaInAs/InP high T0 lasers, the temperature dependence of the oscillation wavelength is slightly larger than that in GaInAsP/InP lasers because of the larger temperature dependence of bandgap wavelength 0.55 nm/K.

    The effect of wavelength detuning on the device performance of identical-epitaxial-layer (IEL) electroabsorption (EA) modulator integrated distributed feedback (DFB) lasers is studied in detail. Based on the lasing behavior of integrated devices with different amount of wavelength detuning and the photocurrent spectra under different reverse biases, the optimal wavelength detuning is experimentally determined to be around 30-40 nm for our IEL integrated devices. By adopting gain-coupled DFB laser section, integrated devices with optimal wavelength detuning have demonstrated excellent single mode performances. The extinction ratio is measured to be greater than 15 dB at -3 V, and the modulation bandwidth is around 8 GHz.
