  • Coverage Enhancement in TDD-OFDMA Downlink by Using Simple-Relays with Resource Allocation and Throughput Guarantee Scheduler

    Simple-relay aided resource allocation (SRARA) schemes are incorporated with throughput guarantee scheduling (TGS) in IEEE 802.16 type time division duplex--orthogonal frequency division multiple access (TDD-OFDMA) downlink in order to enhance service coverage, where the amount of resources at each relay is limited due to either its available power which is much smaller than base station (BS) power or the required overhead. The performance of SRARA schemes is evaluated with both proportional fair (PF) and TGS schedulers at 64 kbps and 128 kbps user throughput requirements when total RS power is set to 500 mW or 1 W. For SRARA with RSs of relatively lower power (500 mW), schemes that put total power into only one subchannel offer larger coverage than when both subchnnels are used with equal power allocation, while the RS with evenly power-allocated two subchannels could provide larger coverage gain for a relatively higher power (1 W). Depending upon the target throughputs it is shown which of the relay scheme or scheduler design would play more important role in improving coverage. In a lower target (64 kbps), more improvement comes from relay scheme rather than scheduler design. For a relatively higher level (128 kbps), it comes from scheduler design rather than relay due to the fact that simple relay can't help using strictly limited amount of resources.

    A wideband NRD guide and rectangular waveguide H-plane transition is proposed to transfer millimeter waves from a dielectric strip to the outer conductor surface of NRD guide through a short length of waveguide made through the conductor plate. As a result, it has a bandwidth about 6.7 GHz of |S11| -15 dB and a low transition loss about 0.35 dB at 60 GHz band.

    This paper proposes a flexible VLSI architecture design for motion estimation in H.264/AVC using a high-efficiency variable block-size decision (VBSD) approach. The proposed VBSD approach can perform a full motion search on integrating the 44 block sizes into 48, 84, 88, 816, 168, or 1616 block sizes and then appropriately select the optimal modes for motion compensation operating. In other words, the proposed architecture based on the VBSD approach can effectively reduce the encoding time of the motion estimation by dealing with different block sizes under 1616 searching range. Using the TSMC 0.18-µm CMOS technology, the proposed architecture has been successfully realized. Simulation and verification results show that the proposed architecture has significant bit-rate reduction and small PSNR degradation. Also, the physical chip design revealed that the maximum frame rate of this work can process 704 fps with QCIF (176144), 176 fps with CIF (352288) and 44 fps with 4CIF (704576) video resolutions under lower gate counts and higher working frequency.

    We consider power and rate adaptations in multicarrier (MC) direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) communications under the assumption that channel state information is provided at both the transmitter and the receiver. We propose, as a power allocation strategy in the frequency domain, to transmit each user's DS waveforms over the user's sub-band with the largest channel gain, rather than transmitting identical DS waveforms over all sub-bands. We then adopt channel inversion power adaptation in the time domain, where the target user's received power level maintains at a fixed value. We also investigate rate adaptation in the time domain, where the data rate is adapted such that a desired transmission quality is maintained. We analyze the BER performance of the proposed power and rate adaptations with fixed average transmission power, and show that power adaptation in both the frequency and the time domains or combined power adaptation in the frequency domain and rate adaptation in the time domain make significant performance improvement over the power adaptation in the frequency domain only. We also compare the performance of the proposed power and rate adaptation schemes in MC-DS/CDMA systems to that of power and rate adapted single carrier DS/CDMA systems with RAKE receiver.

    The use of frequency-domain equalization based on minimum mean square error criterion (called MMSE-FDE) can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of DS-CDMA signal transmission compared to the well-known coherent rake combining. However, in a DS-CDMA cellular system, as a mobile user moves away from a base station and approaches the cell edge, the received signal power gets weaker and the interference from other cells becomes stronger, thereby degrading the transmission performance. To improve the transmission performance of a user close to the cell edge, the well-known site diversity can be used in conjunction with FDE. In this paper, we consider DS-CDMA downlink site diversity with FDE. The MMSE site diversity combining weight is theoretically derived for joint FDE and antenna diversity reception and the downlink capacity is evaluated by computer simulation. It is shown that the larger downlink capacity can be achieved with FDE than with coherent rake combining. It is also shown that the DS-CDMA downlink capacity is almost the same as MC-CDMA downlink capacity.

    We experimentally demonstrated polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) compensation by distributing polarizers with only 1 degree of freedom (DOF) along the transmission line. The average power penalty was measured to be 0.4 dB by inserting four compensators, where average differential group delay was 47% of bit period.

    SIMD instructions are often implemented in modern multimedia oriented processors. Although SIMD instructions are useful for many digital signal processing applications, most compilers do not exploit SIMD instructions. The difficulty in the utilization of SIMD instructions stems from data parallelism in registers. In assembly code generation, the positions of data in registers must be noted. A technique of generating pack instructions which pack or reorder data in registers is essential for exploitation of SIMD instructions. This paper presents a code generation technique for SIMD instructions with pack instructions. SIMD instructions are generated by finding and grouping the same operations in programs. After the SIMD instruction generation, pack instructions are generated. In the pack instruction generation, Multi-valued Decision Diagram (MDD) is introduced to represent and to manipulate sets of packed data. Experimental results show that the proposed code generation technique can generate assembly code with SIMD and pack instructions performing repacking of 8 packed data in registers for a RISC processor with a dual-issue coprocessor which supports SIMD and pack instructions. The proposed method achieved speedup ratio up to about 8.5 by SIMD instructions and multiple-issue mechanism of the target processor.

  • Fuzzy Adaptive Selection of Filtering Schemes for Energy Saving in Sensor Networks

    Sensor networks are often deployed in unattended environments, thus leaving these networks vulnerable to false data injection attacks in which an adversary injects forged reports into the network through compromised nodes, with the goal of deceiving the base station or depleting the resources of forwarding nodes. Several research solutions have been recently proposed to detect and drop such forged reports during the forwarding process. Each design can provide the equivalent resilience in terms of node compromising. However, their energy consumption characteristics differ from each other. Thus, employing only a single filtering scheme for a network is not a recommendable strategy in terms of energy saving. In this paper, we propose a fuzzy-based adaptive filtering scheme selection method for energy saving. A fuzzy rule-based system is exploited to choose one of three filtering schemes by considering the false traffic ratio, the security threshold value, distance, and the detection power of the filtering scheme. The adaptive selection of the filtering schemes can conserve energy, and guarantee sufficient resilience.

  • An Efficient Diagnosis Scheme for RAMs with Simple Functional Faults

    This paper presents an efficient diagnosis scheme for RAMs. Three March-based algorithms are proposed to diagnose simple functional faults of RAMs. A March-15N algorithm is used for locating and partially diagnosing faults of bit-oriented or word-oriented memories, where N represents the address number. Then a 3N March-like algorithm is used for locating the aggressor words (bits) of coupling faults (CFs) in word-oriented (bit-oriented) memories. It also can distinguish the faults which cannot be identified by the March-15N algorithm. Thus, the proposed diagnosis scheme can achieve full diagnosis and locate aggressors with (15N + 3mN) Read/Write operations for a bit-oriented RAM with m CFs. For word-oriented RAMs, a March-like algorithm is also proposed to locate the aggressor bit in the aggressor word with 4 log2B Read/Write operations, where B is the word width. Analysis results show that the proposed diagnosis scheme has higher diagnostic resolution and lower time complexity than the previous fault location and fault diagnosis approaches. A programmable built-in self-diagnosis (BISD) design is also implemented to perform the proposed diagnosis algorithms. Experimental results show that the area overhead of the BISD is small--only about 2.17% and 0.42% for 16 K8-bit and 16 K128-bit SRAMs, respectively.

    FeedForward (FF-) Blind Source Separation (BSS) systems have some degree of freedom in the solution space. Therefore, signal distortion is likely to occur. First, a criterion for the signal distortion is discussed. Properties of conventional methods proposed to suppress the signal distortion are analyzed. Next, a general condition for complete separation and distortion-free is derived for multi-channel FF-BSS systems. This condition is incorporated in learning algorithms as a distortion-free constraint. Computer simulations using speech signals and stationary colored signals are performed for the conventional methods and for the new learning algorithms employing the proposed distortion-free constraint. The proposed method can well suppress signal distortion, while maintaining a high source separation performance.

    In this paper, we propose two weighting techniques to improve performances of query expansion in biomedical document retrieval, especially when a short biomedical term in a query is expanded with its synonymous multi-word terms. When a query contains synonymous terms of different lengths, a traditional IR model highly ranks a document containing a longer terminology because a longer terminology has more chance to be matched with a query. However, such preference is clearly inappropriate and it often yields an unsatisfactory result. To alleviate the bias weighting problem, we devise a method of normalizing the weights of query terms in a long multi-word biomedical term, and a method of discriminating terms by using inverse terminology frequency which is a novel statistics estimated in a query domain. The experiment results on MEDLINE corpus show that our two simple techniques improve the retrieval performance by adjusting the inadequate preference for long multi-word terminologies in an expanded query.

    A new BIST (Built-in Self-test) method for static ADC testing is proposed. The proposed method detects offset, gain, INL (Integral Non-linearity) and DNL (Differential Non-linearity) errors with a low hardware overhead. Moreover, it can solve a transient zone problem which is derived from the ADC noise in real test environments.

    In this letter, we propose a novel approach to speech enhancement, which incorporates a new criterion based on residual noise shaping. In the proposed approach, our goal is to make the residual noise perceptually comfortable instead of making it less audible. A predetermined `comfort noise' is provided as a target for the spectral shaping. Based on some assumptions, the resulting spectral gain function turns out to be a slight modification of the Wiener filter while requiring very low computational complexity. Subjective listening test shows that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional spectral enhancement technique based on soft decision and the noise suppression implemented in IS-893 Selectable Mode Vocoder.

    A method is presented that can substantially reduce the memory requirements of non-binary turbo decoders by efficient representation of the extrinsic information. In the case of the duo-binary turbo decoder employed by the IEEE 802.16e standard, the extrinsic information memory can be reduced by about 43%, which decreases the total decoder complexity by 18%. We also show that the proposed algorithm can be implemented by simple hardware architecture.

  • Defect Detection of TFT-LCD Image Using Adapted Contrast Sensitivity Function and Wavelet Transform

    The thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) image has nonuniform brightness, which is a major difficulty in finding the Mura defect region. To facilitate Mura segmentation, globally widely varying background signal must be flattened and then Mura signal must be enhanced. In this paper, Mura signal enhancement and background-signal-flattening methods using wavelet coefficient processing are proposed. The wavelet approximation coefficients are used for background-signal flattening, while wavelet detail coefficients are employed to magnify the Mura signal on the basis of an adapted contrast sensitivity function (CSF). Then, for the enhanced image, trimodal thresholding segmentation technique and a false-region elimination method based on the human visual system (HVS) are employed for reliable Mura segmentation. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithms produce promising results and can be applied to automated inspection systems for finding Muras in a TFT-LCD image.

    In Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks, one of the main problems is collision between bursts. Most of the previous collision avoidance algorithms divide the Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) problem into two partial problems and treat them separately. This paper focuses on the collision avoidance problem in distributed OBS networks. Our proposal involves cooperation between the routing and the wavelength assignment tasks. The main idea is to classify each wavelength at an output link of a node as suited either to sending or to relaying data bursts. The wavelength most suitable for transmitting bursts changes along the transmission route. Thus, we introduced a novel index called the "Suitability Index" (SI). The SI is a priority index assigned to each pair of output link and wavelength, and its value represents the suitability of that pair for sending or relaying data bursts. The proposed method uses the SI for both routing selection and wavelength assignment. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the burst loss probability, particularly for long distance transmissions. As a result, unfairness in the treatment of short hop and long hop bursts can be reduced.

    The intent of this letter is to propose an efficient timestamp based password authentication scheme using smart cards. We show various types of forgery attacks against Shen et al.'s timestamp-based password authentication scheme and improve their scheme to ensure robust security for the remote authentication process, keeping all the advantages of their scheme. Our scheme successfully defends the attacks that could be launched against other related previous schemes.

  • Ambiguity Problem in the Earth's Surface Altimetry

    This paper addresses the ambiguity of radar altimetry related to the statistical nature of the Earth's surface roughness. A hypothetic altimetry method, which provides a simple way to quantify the measures of ambiguity, is proposed. Cramer-Rao lower bounds on the variances of estimates for the mean altitude and root-mean-square height of the sea surface are suggested as such quantitative measures. The accuracy of some types of air- and spaceborne radar altimeters is numerically analyzed against the derived lower bounds.

    In a frequency-selective multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel, the optimum transmission is achieved by beamforming with eigenvectors obtained at each discrete frequency point, i.e., an extension of eigenbeam-space division multiplexing (E-SDM). However, the calculation load of eigenvalue decomposition at the transmitter increases in proportion to the number of frequency points. In addition, frequency-independent eigenvectors increase the delay spread of the effective channel observed at the receiver. In this paper, we propose a pseudo eigenvector scheme for the purpose of mitigating the calculation load and maintaining frequency continuity (or decreasing the delay spread). First, we demonstrate that pseudo eigenvectors reduce the delay spread of the effective channels with low computational complexity. Next, the practical performance of the pseudo E-SDM (PE-SDM) transmission is evaluated. The simulation results show that PE-SDM provides almost the same or better performance compared with E-SDM when the receiver employs a time-windowing-based channel estimation available in the low delay spread cases.
