This paper proposes pilot-based channel quality reporting for orthogonal frequency division multiple access/time division duplex (OFDMA/TDD) systems with cochannel interference. In the proposed method, a terminal reports his channel quality in multiple subbands to base station (BS) using channel reciprocity of TDD systems. The terminal transmits uplink pilot signals in the subbands with different transmit power which is inversely proportional to the subband-based interference power. The BS can obtain knowledge of the terminal's received signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio on subband basis, measuring the pilot signal power. In performance evaluation, accuracy of channel quality reporting and amount of uplink signalling are examined. From numerical results, it is found that the proposed method becomes effective as the number of subbands and terminals for channel quality reporting increases.

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless relay networks, simultaneously using multiple relay nodes can improve the capacity of source-to-destination communications. Recent information theories have shown that passing the same message across multiple relay nodes can improve the capacity of source-to-destination communications. We have previously proposed three relay schemes that use jointly QR decomposition and the phase control matrix; computer simulations have confirmed the superiority of these schemes over conventional ones such as amplify-and-forward and zero-forcing schemes. In this paper, we analyze the capacity and achievable gains (distributed array gain, intra-node array gain and spatial multiplexing gain) of the previously proposed relay schemes (QR-P-QR, QR-P-ZF, and ZF-P-QR) and thus provide an insight into what contributes to their superiority over conventional schemes. The analyses show that the location of the relay nodes used has a significant impact on capacity. On the basis of this observation, we further propose a method that enables each relay node to individually select its relay scheme according to its channel conditions so as to maximize the capacity. A computer simulation confirms the capacity improvement achieved by the proposed selection method.

This paper presents an ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter using a combination of broadside-coupled structure and lumped-capacitor-loaded shunt stub resonator. The broadside-coupled microstrip-to-coplanar waveguide structure provides an ultra-wide bandpass filtering operation and keeps a good stopband at lower frequencies from DC at the same time. The lumped-capacitor-loaded shunt stub resonator creates two transmission zeros (attenuation poles which can be located at the outsides of the two bandedges of the UWB bandpass filter to improve the out-band performance by selecting a suitable combination of the length of the shunt stubs and the capacitance of the loaded chip capacitors. The filter was designed based on electromagnetic simulation for broadside-coupled structure, microwave circuit simulation and experiments for determining the transmission zeros. The filter was fabricated on a one-layer dielectric substrate. The measured results demonstrated that the developed UWB bandpass filter has good performance: low insertion loss about 0.46 dB and low group delay about 0.26 ns at the center of the passband and very flat over the whole passband, and less than -10 dB reflection over the passband. The implemented transmission zeros, particularly at the low frequency end, dramatically improved the out-band performance, leading the filter satisfy the FCC's spectrum mask not only for indoor but also for outdoor applications. These poles improved also the skirt performance at both bandedges of the filter. A lowpass filter has been also introduced and integrated with the proposed bandpass filter to have a further improvement of the out-band performance at the high frequency end. The filters integrated with lowpass section exhibit excellent filter performance: almost satisfying the FCC's spectrum mask from DC to 18 GHz. The developed UWB bandpass filter has a compact size of 4 cm1.5 cm, or 4.8 cm1.5 cm with lowpass section implemented.

The trend of microwave circuits has been toward highly integrated systems. Most design tools for designing microwave circuits mounted the linear or the nonlinear devices adopt the fundamental circuit theory using the S matrix on the frequency domain. The harmonic balance method is also used to correspond to the nonlinear circuit. Therefore, the effect of the electromagnetic field, for example, a mutual coupling between sub-circuits through the space is almost disregarded. To calculate these circuits included its surrounding electromagnetic field, the finite difference time domain method combined with the equivalent circuit simulation had been presented as the lumped element FDTD (LE-FDTD) method. In general, even if an analytical target is a linear circuit, the FDTD method requires very long analytical time. In this paper, we propose an efficient LE-FDTD method to reduce the analytical time. We investigate its efficiency to compare with the conventional LE-FDTD method or measurements, consequently, it is confirmed that the proposal method requires only at analytical time of 1/10 compared with the conventional method. We also show that the proposal method is able to analyze characteristics of the active integrated antenna (AIA) which are practicably impossible to analyze by using the conventional method.

In digital transmission and storage systems, sequences must have attributes that comply with the physical characteristics of the channel. These channel constraints can often be satisfied through constrained sequence coding techniques which avoid use of sequences that violate the given channel constraints. In the design of a constrained code, it is usually helpful to consider the PSD of the encoded sequence in order to ensure that PSD requirements are met, and to obtain an indication of bandwidth, response at dc, average power peaks, and other spectral characteristics of interest. In this paper, we introduce an approach for the construction of finite-state sequential machine (FSSM) modeled encoders to satisfy spectral requirements. This approach involves construction of either a Mealy or a Moore FSSM to represent the encoder, and evaluation of the state transition probabilities and codeword values such that the PSD of the designed code meets a predefined spectral shape. Examples in this paper demonstrate the usefulness of this approach.

We consider the blind recovery problem such that images embedded with side information are given, and we want to obtain the side information under some prescribed constraints. In this case, the system equation becomes y=Ax+b where in addition to the unknown A and x, b also is an unknown quantity and but clearly not a noise component. We assume that several images with the same embedding side information are given, and the image processing to b is described as the perturbation of A. We formulate the optimization function to obtain A, b and x, under the constraint of some finite brightness levels i.e. finite alphabets.

CORDIC (COordinate Rotation DIgital Computer) is a well known algorithm using simple adders and shifters to evaluate various elementary functions. Thus, CORDIC is suitable for the design of high performance chips using VLSI technology. In this paper, a complete analysis of the computation error of both the (conventional) CORDIC algorithm and the CORDIC algorithm with expanded convergence range is derived to facilitate the design task. The resulting formulas regarding the relative and absolute approximation errors and the truncation error are summarized in the tabular form. As the numerical accuracy of CORDIC processors is determined by the word length of operands and the number of iterations, three reference tables are constructed for the optimal choice of these numbers. These tables can be used to facilitate the design of cost-effective CORDIC processors in terms of areas and performances. In addition, two design examples: singular value decomposition (SVD) and lattice filter for digital signal processing systems are given to demonstrate the goal and benefit of the derived numerical analysis of CORDIC.

Space-time block coding is an attractive solution for improving quality in wireless links. In general, the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel is correlated by an amount that depends on the propagation environment as well as the polarization of the antenna elements and the spacing between them. In this paper, asymptotic performance and exact symbol error probability (SEP) of orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) are considered in spatially correlated Rayleigh fading MIMO channel. We derive the moment generating function (MGF) of effective signal-to-noise ration (SNR) after combining scheme at the receiver. Using the MGF of effective SNR, we calculate the probability density function (pdf) of the effective SNR and derive exact closed-form SEP expressions of PAM/PSK/QAM with M-ary signaling. We prove that the diversity order is given by the product of the rank of the transmit and receive correlation matrix. Moreover, we quantify the loss in coding gain due to the spatial correlation. Simulation results demonstrate that our analysis provides accuracy.

In Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks, packets are assembled into bursts at ingress edge routers and disassembled at egress edge routers. This letter presents an analytical model to quantify the burstification latency in the OBS networks. To the authors' best knowledge, this letter is the first one to address the latency issue in OBS in a comprehensive manner analytically. The results allow us to quantitatively understand how OBS network parameters such as maximum burst length and maximum timeout affect the packet latency in the OBS networks. We show that the burstification latency in the OBS network is bounded and can be tuned by setting the system parameters under latency constraints.

The reflection method is an accurate and simple method for measuring the radiation efficiency of a small antenna. However, it takes too long and has the disadvantage of underestimating the efficiency due to resonance in the cavity formed by the straight waveguide and two sliding shorts. To reduce the measurement time, one sliding short can be fixed while the other one is moved. To improve the accuracy of this technique, we can set the antenna to be measured at the center of the two sliding shorts or at a local anti-node of the standing wave in the waveguide. When one of the sliding shorts is fixed, the measured efficiency becomes negative at certain frequencies. We examine these reductions in efficiency using an equivalent transmission line model for the reflection method. We also derive analytical expressions for the overall efficiency in the above cases and verify new procedures that enable measurements to be performed without any drops in the measured efficiency.

MIMO leads to dramatic improvement in channel capacity and/or link reliability of wireless systems. However, a MIMO channel has only one degree of freedom in a keyhole environment. As a result, this environment reduces achievable channel capacity and link quality. This paper proposes a MIMO repeater system, which can realize a multi-stream transmission. Although the averaged channel capacity in the MIMO repeater system is discussed in several published papers, the probability density functions of eigenvalues of correlation matrix are not analyzed. MIMO transmission performance can basically be estimated from eigenvalues of the channel correlation matrix. We derive an approximated formula for the probability density function of all eigenvalues linked to the space diversity. It is shown that the calculated values based on the proposed method agrees very well with the simulated values.

This paper examines seasonal change of the true water area of Lake "Sakata" by using Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (POLSAR) image analysis. The true water area includes not only the body of water but also the water area under emerged-plants and/or floating-leave plants in the lake. Statistical POLSAR image analysis is carried out for both X- and L-band data, based on the three-component scattering power decomposition method, where the decomposed components are surface scattering, double-bounce scattering and volume scattering components. From the results of the image analysis for the L-band POLSAR data acquired by Pi-SAR system, it is found that strong double-bounce scattering can be observed at the vicinity of the boundary region between water area and the surrounding emerged-plants area in early and middle summer. This phenomenon is an important factor for environmental monitoring. To verify the generating mechanism of the double-bounce scattering, the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) polarimetric scattering analysis is also executed for a simplified boundary model, which simulates the local boundary region around the lake and consists of lots of vertical thin dielectric pillars on a perfect electric conductor (PEC) plate or on a PEC and dielectric hybrid plate. Taking into account the polarimetric feature of the double-bounce scattering obtained by both the FDTD and POLSAR image analyses, one can distinguish the actual water area from the bush of the emerged-plants around the lake, even when the water area is concealed by emerged-plants and/or floating-leave plants. Consequently, it is found that by using the proposed approach, one can estimate the true water area seasonal change for the lake and the surrounding wetland.

This paper proposes a contention-free burst scheduling scheme for optically burst-switched WDM networks. We construct contention-free wavelength planes (λ-planes) by assigning dedicated wavelengths to each ingress node. Bursts are transmitted to their egress nodes on λ-planes, along routes forming a spanning tree. As a result, contention at intermediate core nodes is completely eliminated, and contention at ingress nodes is resolved by means of electric buffers. This paper develops a spanning tree construction algorithm, aiming at balancing input loads among output ports at each ingress node. Furthermore, a wavelength assignment algorithm is proposed, which is based on the amount of traffic lost at ingress nodes. We show that the proposed scheme can decrease the burst loss probability drastically, even if traffic intensities at ingress nodes are different.

We present MobileOBJ, a formal framework for specifying and verifying mobile systems. Based on hidden algebra, the components of a mobile system are specified as behavioral objects or Observational Transition Systems, a kind of transition system, enriched with special action and observation operators related to the distinct characteristics of mobile computing systems. The whole system comes up as the concurrent composition of these components. The implementation of the abstract model is achieved using CafeOBJ, an executable, industrial strength algebraic specification language. The visualization of the specification can be done using CafeOBJ graphical notation. In addition, invariant and behavioral properties of mobile systems can be proved through theorem proving techniques, such as structural induction and coinduction that are fully supported by the CafeOBJ system. The application of the proposed framework is presented through the modeling of a mobile computing environment and the services that need to be supported by the former.

There have been many theoretical and experimental investigations on polarization diversity reception characteristics at base stations. The diversity gain was evaluated based on the distribution of the instantaneous received power in these investigations. The mainstream mobile communication systems are shifting to standardized IMT-2000 systems and the W-CDMA system is one of them. The effect using base station polarization diversity in W-CDMA must be evaluated by considering not only antenna diversity, but also RAKE reception/path diversity. Furthermore, Transmit Power Control (TPC) is applied to overcome the near-far problem of mobile units that maintain a fixed reception power level in W-CDMA systems. Therefore, traditional diversity gain cannot be used as an evaluation metric. This paper proposes a theoretical analysis method for diversity gain using base station polarization diversity in W-CDMA. The evaluation model used for theoretical analysis is verified based on a comparison with the experimental results and the analytical results of the practical diversity gain are clarified.

In this letter, the fabrication of a compact and high performance semi-lumped coplanar waveguide low-pass filter (CPW-LPF) on high resistivity silicon (HRS) substrate at millimeter wave is proposed. The design procedure and the equivalent circuit of the proposed semi-lumped CPW-LPF is discussed. The filter structure of is very simple but its performances is fairly good. This designed filter at cutoff frequency fc of 31 GHz has very good measured characteristics including the low insertion loss, sharp rejection and low group delay, due to the reduced substrate loss of HRS. Experimental results of the fabricated filter show a good agreement with the predicted results.

In order to support driving safety, TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) has been introduced in U.S.A. and Europe. In Japan, the AIRwatch system has been developed and commercialized. Some studies were made to clarify the electric field environment of this system. However, no detailed calculation of the electric field between the transmitter in the tire and the receiving antenna has been published. This paper clarifies the electric field environment of the Japanese system through electromagnetic simulations by a high performance MoM simulator that utilizes the MLFMM scheme. First of all, electric wave emissions from an antenna mounted in a tire are shown to be larger than that of the same antenna in free space. The tire rubber effects are also investigated. Next, electric field distributions on the windshield holding the receiving antenna are calculated. By comparing calculated electric field levels with those in the free space condition, car body interruptions are clarified. Because car body interruptions are not so severe, it is shown that the free space electric field levels can be used as rough design parameters. Moreover, electric field changes due to tire rotation are also clarified. Calculation accuracy is confirmed by the good agreement with measured data collected from a 1/5 scale car model. To permit estimations to be made in actual situations, the effects of the ground are also investigated. This simulation study introduces a lot of important data useful in TPMS system design.

This paper proposes a new type of compact waveguide directional coupler, which is constructed from two crossed E-plane rectangular waveguide with two metallic posts in the square junction and one metallic post at each port. The metallic posts in the square junction are set symmetrically along a diagonal line to obtain the directivity properties. The metallic post inserted at each input/output waveguide port can realize a matched state. Tight-coupling properties 0.79-6 dB are realized by optimizing the dimension of the junction and the positions/radii of the posts. The design results are verified by an em-simulator (Ansoft HFSS) and experiments.

The error resilient entropy coding (EREC) provides efficient resynchronization method to the coded bitstream, which might be corrupted by transmission errors. The technique has been given more prominence, nowadays, because it achieves fast resynchronization without sizable overhead, and thereby provides graceful quality degradation according to the network conditions. This paper presents a novel framework to analyze the performance of EREC in terms of the error probability in decoding a basic resynchronization unit (RU) for various error prone networks. In order to show the feasibility of the proposed framework, this paper also proposes a novel EREC algorithm based on the slightly modified H.263 bitstream syntax. The proposed scheme minimizes the effect of errors on low frequency DCT coefficients and incorporates near optimal channel-matched searching pattern (SP), which guarantees the best possible quality of reproduced video. Given the number of bits generated for each RU, the near optimal SP is produced by the proposed iterative deterministic partial SP update method, which reduces the complexity of finding optimal solution, O((N-1)!), to O(m·N2). The proposed EREC algorithm significantly improves the decoded video quality, especially when the bit error rate is in the rage of 10-3-10-4. Up to 5 dB enhancement of the PSNR value was observed in a single video frame.
