  • Simultaneous Wavelength Conversion Using SOA-PLC Hybrid Wavelength Selector

    Simultaneous wavelength conversion of multi-WDM channels is expected to be a key technique in near-future networks. In this paper, 4-channel wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a hybrid wavelength selector is successfully demonstrated. The wavelength selector consists of two four-channel spot-size-converter-integrated semiconductor optical amplifier (SS-SOA) gate arrays on a planar-lightwave-circuit (PLC) platform and two PLC-arrayed-waveguide-gratings (AWGs). As the wavelength selector has an individual SS-SOA for the wavelength conversion of each channel, there is negligible interference between channels. Four WDM channels with an 2.5 Gb/s modulation were converted from 1555 to 1575 nm. Clear eye openings and only a small power penalty of less than 0.5 dB were observed. The receiver sensitivity was -31 dBm at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-9.

  • Algorithm Diversity in a Software Antenna

    A software antenna, which will be a key device realizing flexible and highly reliable wireless communications systems, is inherently matched with software defined radios (SDR). In this paper, first, key technologies on the software antenna are introduced. The technologies contain i) how to recognize the radio environment, ii) how to determine the optimum adaptive signal processing algorithm, and iii) how to reconfigure the digital beamforming circuit. Then, an image of a software antenna with reconfigurable eigenvector-beamspace configuration is presented. Finally, by assuming various propagation conditions, performance of the software antenna in terms of algorithm diversity is demonstrated.

    An architecture for a digital-to-RF converter for a software defined radio (SDR) transmitter is proposed. The ideal hardware architecture for an SDR is a digital-signal to RF-signal direct conversion transmitter. However no conventional digital-to-analog converter (DAC) has converted over 1-GHz RF signal with enough resolution, in the present condition. In this paper, a digital-to-RF direct converter architecture using a ΔΣ modulation technique is proposed for the amplitude-phase modulated signal. The experimental results show that the proposed direct converter outputs a sufficiently accurate signal.

    In this paper, a new frequency transformation for complex analog filter design which is suitable for integration is discussed. Arbitrary specified passband and stopband edges are easily transformed into those of the normalized LPF by solving simultaneous equations with four unknowns. Different from previous methods, the proposed transformation provides better performance in active realization of complex filters.

    We present three-wave mixing devices useful for signal processing functions in WDM and TDM systems, including wavelength conversion, spectral inversion, and gated mixing. These mixers exhibit extremely wide bandwidth, low noise, high efficiency, and format transparency.

  • A Study on Blind Adaptive Receiver for DS-CDMA Systems

    The multiple access causes an interference problem in the direct-sequence code-division multiple access systems. An efficient adaptive algorithm should be used to suppress this interference for the improvement of system performance. In this paper, the new blind adaptive method is suggested using the constant modulus algorithm for the purpose of interference suppression. Simulation results show that the converged value of signal to interference ratio for the proposed method is approximately 6 [dB] larger than that of a conventional Blind-MOE receiver in the additive white Gaussian noise channel and channel with inter-symbol interference while the signal to interference ratio improvement is almost 4 [dB] better in the Rayleigh fading channel. The suggested method is also robust to the new user interference resulting the nearly 3 [dB] improvement of the SIR value comparing with the conventional receiver. Based on these results, it is shown that the BER of the proposed receiver is lower than that of any other conventional receiver. Therefore, using the newly suggested method, the considerable performance improvement can be obtained for the DS-CDMA systems.

    A new computational method for evaluating the reverse-link interference distribution in a cellular CDMA system is proposed. In particular, a positive feedback effect of the reverse-link closed-loop power control has been taken into account to precisely capture a realistic effect of unequal cell loading on system capacity. It subsequently facilitates computing the frequency reuse efficiency of the cellular CDMA system under unequal cell loading.

    We propose a rough classification system using Hierarchical Learning Vector Quantization (HLVQ) for large scale classification problems which involve many categories. HLVQ of proposed system divides categories hierarchically in the feature space, makes a tree and multiplies the nodes down the hierarchy. The feature space is divided by a few codebook vectors in each layer. The adjacent feature spaces overlap at the borders. HLVQ classification is both speedy and accurate due to the hierarchical architecture and the overlapping technique. In a classification experiment using ETL9B, the largest database of handwritten characters in Japan, (it contains a total of 607,200 samples from 3036 categories) the speed and accuracy of classification by HLVQ was found to be higher than that by Self-Organizing feature Map (SOM) and Learning Vector Quantization methods. We demonstrate that the classification rate of the proposed system which uses multi-codebook vectors for each category under HLVQ can achieve higher speed and accuracy than that of systems which use average vectors.

    This paper conducts performance evaluation for a code division multiple access (CDMA) system when channel bands of multiple neighboring CDMA/DSSS are overlapped in frequency domain. It is assumed that all systems adopt direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DSSS) technique and are BPSK modulated by the different carrier frequencies. Automatic power control (APC) is also applied in the interfered system such that the receiver gets the same power from all users. Without loss generality, an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel is also assumed during analysis. In this paper, the analytic solution of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is first derived in which both CDMA systems are modulated by different carrier frequencies. This analysis is good for general cases; and the result shows an excellent computational performance. In particular, the result is very close to Pursly's result, when the systems have the same code length with no carrier difference.

    For plasma simulations, we developed a one-dimensional (1d) Object-Oriented Particle-in-Cell code for X11-based Unix workstations (XOOPIC) by modifying the current two-dimensional version which was originally developed by PTSG (Plasma theory and simulation group) in the University of California at Berkeley. We implemented a simplified field solve and current deposition in the code. We retained three components of particle velocity, although the spatial variation for particle position and field components is limited to one dimension. To verify the function of the 1d code, we perform simulations with typical models such as the Child-Langmuir current model and electromagnetic wave propagation in plasma. In both cases, the simulation results quantitatively agree with the theory.

    A broadband and flexible receiver architecture is investigated for the handheld software defined radio (SDR). The proposed SDR architecture is based on the direct conversion and low intermediate frequency (low-IF) principle with digital channel filtering, which provides the receiver with flexibility for the multi-standard application. This architecture also enables analog-to-digital converter activating essentially in baseband or low frequency so that the clock jitter, which serves as an important subject in the well-known IF sampling method, can be reduced. Basic performance of the proposed architecture has been confirmed by the experimental model.

    Design patterns which Erich Gamma advocates is expected as an effective approach for the reuse of designs. So, design patterns are predicted to be used frequently in object-oriented software development. In such circumstance, tools to support applying design patterns to the design diagrams of the system under development are thought to be useful. This research develops Object-Oriented Pattern Applying Support tool OOPAS. It consists of a library of Gamma design patterns with very familiar examples and adrem explanation, and of a function to generate the correctly modified design diagrams of the application system when a design pattern was applied to evolve that system. Actually, these functions are installed in the structured object modeling environment SOME, which is an object-oriented design diagram editor made previously in our laboratory. This design diagram evolving function is formalized as a Join operation of the recursive graph. As a result of the evaluation experiment, the join operation can be applied to the almost of the twenty three Gamma design patterns excluding the six patterns such as Iterator and Command, which are stated at too abstract level to be represented by the design diagrams.

  • An Interference Suppression Method for Wireless Communications by Applying P-RCE

    Interference suppression is one of the important functions for mobile communications and software radio. First, this paper shows a new type of interference suppression method by P-RCE (Probability-Restricted Coulomb Energy) which is applicable to mobile communications and software radio. P-RCE is one of the neural networks and mainly used in the field of pattern classification. Secondly, this paper presents several characteristics of this method. For example, it is found from our studies that good suppression effects can be performed even when the interference signals exist closely adjacent to the desired signal and/or total number of signals is more than that of the antenna elements. Next, this paper discusses two types of improvement of processing speed for new suppression method. One is the setting up the learning and non-learning intervals, and the other is the restriction of the number of prototype cells. According to the results, fairly good improvement is realized.

    The propagation and the gate operation of femtosecond pulses in nonlinear optical waveguides utilizing the saturation of the intersubband absorption at 1.55 µm in nitride multiple quantum wells are simulated for the first time. The calculation was carried out by a one-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (FD-TD) method combined with three-level rate equations describing the intersubband carrier dynamics. The absorption recovers within 1 ps when the pulse width is less than 200 fs, which will allow 1-Tb/s operation. However, the pulse shape may be deformed with the propagation due to the coherent effect and the interference between the signal and the control pulses, and thus, optimization of the pulse widths and the incident timing is required. Since the transparent window (width of the control pulse) becomes shorter according to the propagation, the width of the control pulse should be set broader than that of the signal pulse. As an example, we assume the case where a 1.6-µm, 100-fs signal pulse is gated by a 300-fs control pulse at a wavelength of 1.5 µm in a 500-µm length waveguide. A 140-fs gated signal pulse with a smooth envelope is expected to appear after the band-pass filter. The extinction ratio is expected to be greater than 15 dB.

  • Single Shot Demultiplexing of 1 THz Light Pulses by Time-to-Space Conversion Using a Film of Organic Dye J-Aggregates

    Principle of a single shot demultiplextion by means of time-to-space conversion was investigated using femtosecond nonlinear optical response of absorption bleaching of squarylium dye (SQ) J-aggregates. Spincoated films of squarylium dye J-aggregates on glass substrates exhibit efficient and ultrafast transmittance change, which recovers 73% of its initial level (0 fs) within 1 ps. A simple method for time-to-space conversion was applied for this film. We took our attention to one of the characteristics of femtosecond pulse, which is the spatial thinness in its propagation direction. Femtosecond pulses of a single pump pulse and train of four probe pulses were illuminated to the same area (diameter of 10 mm) of the surface of the SQ J-aggregates film. Direction of the probe beam was normal to the surface of the film and that of the pump beam was oblique angle in horizontal plane. Caused by spatial delay of a pump pulse due to the illumination in oblique angle to the film, four probe pulses with interval time of 1 ps (1 THz) meet separate places on the film. Because of the fast response of the SQ J-aggregates, the film picked out part of each probe pulse, which has narrower shapes in horizontal direction compared to the initial circular one by transmittance change of the film. The spatially separated four lines were observed by a CCD camera for an image of the transmitted probe pulse train. These results suggest that the response time of SQ J-aggregate film, which determines the horizontal width of each line, to be enough for demultiplexing of 1 THz optical signals.

  • Generalization of Threshold Signature and Authenticated Encryption for Group Communications

    In this paper, we propose an idea of the generalization of threshold signature and authenticated encryption for group communications. The concept of the (t, n) threshold signature with (k, l) shared verification is implemented in group-oriented cryptosystems. In the system, any t members can represent a group to sign a message and any k verifiers can represent another group to authenticate the signature. By integrating the cryptographic techniques of data encryption, digital signature and message recovery, a group-oriented authenticated encryption scheme with (k, l) shared verification is also proposed. The message expansion and communication cost can also be reduced in our schemes.

    We propose a device called the Waveguide width abruptly EXpanded Spot-Size-Converter integrated Laser Diode (WEX-SSC-LD) that has been designed to improve lasing characteristics by achieving a steep photoluminescence wavelength change along the cavity. The waveguide parameter was optimized by a three-dimensional beam propagation method to reduce mode conversion and absorption losses. The WEX-SSC-LD's showed superior lasing characteristics such as threshold currents of 5.8 mA at 25C and 19 mA at 85C and operation current of 57.5 mA at an output power of 10 mW for 85C. These excellent lasing characteristics were achieved due to the steeper bandgap-energy shift in the SSC section near the LD section side by introducing the WEX-SSC structure as well as the high-quality MQW active layer grown by selective MOVPE and the precisely controlled pn-pn current blocking structure. The coupling loss to normal single-mode fiber was as low as 1.8 dB while maintaining a large coupling tolerance of 1.8 µm. These excellent coupling characteristics are very promising for passively aligned optical modules.

  • A Fast Graph-Based Alternative Wiring Scheme for Boolean Networks

    Alternative wiring techniques have been shown to be very useful for many EDA problems. The currently used rewiring techniques are mainly ATPG based. In this paper, we study the approach of applying purely graph-based local pattern search methods in locating alternative wires. The method searches minimal graph patterns containing alternative wires that limited to 2 edges distant from the target wire. The experimental result shows that this scheme is very fast and has the advantage of searching both the nearby forward and backward alternative wires easily. The overall number of alternative wires searched is quite comparable (104%), compared to the forward search only RAMBO version, and the CPU time is 200 times faster. We also illustrate its usage, among many others, by a simple coupling with the SIS algebraic operations and let this rewiring tool serve as a netlist-perturbing engine for logic minimization. The coupling scheme shows a further reduction of 8.5% in area compared to applying algebraic script alone, with a nearly negligible CPU overhead spent in rewiring.

    A second-order sigma-delta modulator with a 3-bit internal quantizer featuring a gain scaling of an internal ADC and a very simple internal DAC has been designed and implemented in a 0.8 µm double-poly double-metal CMOS process. We improved the performance of the modulator with the gain scaling of a 3-bit internal ADC and design of the internal error-free DAC with using simple logic gates. The specification of each component is determined for the modulator to have 14-bit resolution by time based modeling and the designed components satisfy the required specifications. The peak SNR of 87 dB and dynamic range of 87 dB were achieved at a clock rate of 2.816 MHz for 22 kHz baseband. The measured results show that the fabricated modulator lower SNR by 14 dB than that of the simulation due to the non-ideal input source and the disregarded error factors in the modeling such as the voltage variable capacitors etc.

    This paper discusses and clarifies effectiveness of data-driven implementation of protocol handling system to access TINA (Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture) network and internet. TINA is a networking architecture that achieves networking services and management ubiquitously for users and networks. Many TINA related ACTS (Advanced Communication Technologies and Services) projects have been organized in Europe. In Japan, The TINA Trial (TTT) to achieve ATM network management and services based on TINA architectures was done by NTT and several manufactures from April 1997 to April 1999. In these studies and trials, much effort is devoted to development of software based on service architecture and network architecture being standardized in TINA-C (TINA Consortium). In order to achieve TINA environment universally in customers and network sides, we have to consider how to deploy TINA environment onto user side and how to use access transmission capacity as efficiently as possible. Recent technology can easily achieve application and environment downloading from the network side to user side by use of e. g. , JAVA. In accessing the network, there are several possible bottlenecks in information exchange in customer side such as PC processing capability, access protocol handling capability, intra-house wiring bandwidth. Authors, in parallel with TINA software architecture study, have been studying versatile requirements for hardware platform of TINA network. In those studies, we have clarified that the stream-oriented data-driven processor authors have been studying and developing have high reliability, high multiprocessing and multimedia information processing capability. Based on these studies, this paper first shows Von Neumann-based protocol handler is ineffective in case of multiprocessing through mathematical and emulation studies. Then, we show our data-driven protocol handling can effectively realize access protocol handling by emulation study. Then, we describe a result of first step of implementation of data-driven TCP/IP protocol handling. This result proves our TCP/IP hub based on data-driven processor is applicable not only for TINA/CORBA network but normal internet access. Finally, we show a possible customer premises network configuration which resolves bottleneck to access TINA network through ATM access.
