  • Assessment of Building Damage in 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake from Multi-Temporal SAR Images Using Getis Statistic

    In this paper, the Getis statistic is applied to ALOS- PALSAR (Advanced Land Ovserving Satellite-Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar) images for assessing the building damage caused by the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008. As a proposed image analysis, a simulated building image using mapping and projection algorithm is first presented for analysis of the Getis statistic. The results show the high accuracy of the assessment of the proposed approach. The Getis statistic is then applied to two ALOS-PALSAR images acquired before and after the Wenchuan earthquake to assess the level of building damage. Results of the Getis statistic show that the damage level is approximately 81%.

    The adequate evaluation of sound quality is an important issue for the lossy compression codecs, such as MP3. ITU-R Rec BS. 1387-1 (PEAQ – Perceptual Evaluation of Audio Quality) is the most widely used method to evaluate sound quality objectively. However, PEAQ can only be used for mono signals or two channel stereo signals, because it considers only timbral factors when assessing sound quality. This paper introduces an improved objective quality assessment method that can be used for mono signals and multichannel audio signals that considers both “spatial” and “timbral” factors. The “spatial” factors, which measure perceptual distortions in spatial impression, are important to evaluate the quality of multichannel sounds.

  • Estimating Environment-Independent Parameters on Basis of Comparative Assessment of User's Subjectivity

    We analyze subjective assessments by comparative evaluations of bulk data transmission by using two psychological methods (the method of successive categories and the constant method). From the results of the first experiment, the thresholds at which participants downloading a data file began to feel dissatisfaction with service degradation are 15.7 Mbps and 11.6 Mbps obtained by the two different methods when the throughput without the service degradation is approximately 22 Mbps. In the second experiment, we investigate the threshold of user satisfaction for various network environments. The threshold is 63% of the throughput of the user's usual network environment. Moreover, from the viewpoint of download time, users feel dissatisfaction with the quality when download time becomes 1.5 times longer. These values can be used to more effectively allocate network resources and thereby achieve higher service quality.

  • A Web Script-Based Field Evaluation Method to Assess Subjective Quality of Mobile Services

    Providing mobile services that ensure user satisfaction is one of the most crucial issues for telecommunication carriers and service providers. Traditionally, user satisfaction with the service, i.e., the Quality of Experience (QoE), has been assessed in a laboratory by using elaborate network systems and customized terminals. However, reliable QoE for a target mobile service in the context of actual use cannot be obtained by laboratory experiment, since QoE can be affected by a variety of factors such as environmental conditions and the mental state of the user. This paper proposes a novel Web script-based field evaluation method designed to ascertain user satisfaction with mobile services. The proposed method has the following practical advantages. Since experimental conditions, especially communication conditions, can be simulated with a Web script, such as FlashLite, a subjective assessment can be conducted anywhere using the mobile terminal of the participant. Thus, QoE for a target mobile service in the field can easily be obtained.

  • An Image Quality Assessment Model Based on the MPEG-7 Descriptor

    Our research is focused on examining the Image Quality Assessment Model based on the MPEG-7 descriptor and the No Reference model. The model retrieves a reference image using image search and evaluate its subject score as a pseudo Reduced Reference model. The MPEG-7 descriptor was originally used for content retrieval, but we discovered that the MPEG-7 descriptor can also be used for image quality assessment. We examined the performance of the proposed model and the results revealed that this method has a higher performance rating than the SSIM.

    Correction factors are presented for estimating the RF electromagnetic field strength in the compliance assessment of human exposure from an indoor RF radio source in the frequency range from 800 MHz to 3.5 GHz. The correction factors are derived from the increase in the spatial average electric field strength distribution, which is dependent on the building materials. The spatial average electric field strength is calculated using relative complex dielectric constants of building materials. The relative complex dielectric constant is obtained through measurement of the transmission and reflection losses for eleven kinds of building materials used in business office buildings and single family dwellings.

    Due to the development and popularization of high-definition televisions, digital video cameras, Blu-ray discs, digital broadcasting, IP television and so on, it plays an important role to identify and quantify video quality degradations. In this paper, we propose SV-CIELAB which is an objective video quality assessment (VQA) method using a spatio-velocity contrast sensitivity function (SV-CSF). In SV-CIELAB, motion information in videos is effectively utilized for filtering unnecessary information in the spatial frequency domain. As the filter to apply videos, we used the SV-CSF. It is a modulation transfer function of the human visual system, and consists of the relationship among contrast sensitivities, spatial frequencies and velocities of perceived stimuli. In the filtering process, the SV-CSF cannot be directly applied in the spatial frequency domain because spatial coordinate information is required when using velocity information. For filtering by the SV-CSF, we obtain video frames separated in spatial frequency domain. By using velocity information, the separated frames with limited spatial frequencies are weighted by contrast sensitivities in the SV-CSF model. In SV-CIELAB, the criteria are obtained by calculating image differences between filtered original and distorted videos. For the validation of SV-CIELAB, subjective evaluation experiments were conducted. The subjective experimental results were compared with SV-CIELAB and the conventional VQA methods such as CIELAB color difference, Spatial-CIELAB, signal to noise ratio and so on. From the experimental results, it was shown that SV-CIELAB is a more efficient VQA method than the conventional methods.

  • Influence of Lombard Effect: Accuracy Analysis of Simulation-Based Assessments of Noisy Speech Recognition Systems for Various Recognition Conditions

    The accuracy of simulation-based assessments of speech recognition systems under noisy conditions is investigated with a focus on the influence of the Lombard effect on the speech recognition performances. This investigation was carried out under various recognition conditions of different sound pressure levels of ambient noise, for different recognition tasks, such as continuous speech recognition and spoken word recognition, and using different recognition systems, i.e., systems with and without adaptation of the acoustic models to ambient noise. Experimental results showed that accurate simulation was not always achieved when dry sources with neutral talking style were used, but it could be achieved if the dry sources that include the influence of the Lombard effect were used; the simulation in the latter case is accurate, irrespective of the recognition conditions.

    In this letter, we present an automatic approach of objective singing performance evaluation for untrained singers by relating acoustic measurements to perceptual ratings of singing voice quality. Several acoustic parameters and their combination features are investigated to find objective correspondences of the perceptual evaluation criteria. Experimental results show relative strong correlation between perceptual ratings and the combined features and the reliability of the proposed evaluation system is tested to be comparable to human judges.

    It is a tedious and subjective task to measure severity of a dysarthria by manually evaluating his/her speech using available standard assessment methods based on human perception. This paper presents an automated approach to assess speech quality of a dysarthric speaker with cerebral palsy. With the consideration of two complementary factors, speech consistency and speech distinction, a speech quality indicator called speech clarity index (Ψ) is proposed as a measure of the speaker's ability to produce consistent speech signal for a certain word and distinguished speech signal for different words. As an application, it can be used to assess speech quality and forecast speech recognition rate of speech made by an individual dysarthric speaker before actual exhaustive implementation of an automatic speech recognition system for the speaker. The effectiveness of Ψ as a speech recognition rate predictor is evaluated by rank-order inconsistency, correlation coefficient, and root-mean-square of difference. The evaluations had been done by comparing its predicted recognition rates with ones predicted by the standard methods called the articulatory and intelligibility tests based on the two recognition systems (HMM and ANN). The results show that Ψ is a promising indicator for predicting recognition rate of dysarthric speech. All experiments had been done on speech corpus composed of speech data from eight normal speakers and eight dysarthric speakers.

  • Weighted Association Rule Mining for Item Groups with Different Properties and Risk Assessment for Networked Systems

    In market-basket analysis, weighted association rule (WAR) discovery can mine the rules that include more beneficial information by reflecting item importance for special products. In the point-of-sale database, each transaction is composed of items with similar properties, and item weights are pre-defined and fixed by a factor such as the profit. However, when items are divided into more than one group and the item importance must be measured independently for each group, traditional weighted association rule discovery cannot be used. To solve this problem, we propose a new weighted association rule mining methodology. The items should be first divided into subgroups according to their properties, and the item importance, i.e. item weight, is defined or calculated only with the items included in the subgroup. Then, transaction weight is measured by appropriately summing the item weights from each subgroup, and the weighted support is computed as the fraction of the transaction weights that contains the candidate items relative to the weight of all transactions. As an example, our proposed methodology is applied to assess the vulnerability to threats of computer systems that provide networked services. Our algorithm provides both quantitative risk-level values and qualitative risk rules for the security assessment of networked computer systems using WAR discovery. Also, it can be widely used for new applications with many data sets in which the data items are distinctly separated.

  • Objective Pathological Voice Quality Assessment Based on HOS Features

    This work proposes new features to improve the pathological voice quality classification performance. They are the means, the variances, and the perturbations of the higher-order statistics (HOS) such as the skewness and the kurtosis. The HOS-based features show meaningful differences among normal, grade 1, grade 2, and grade 3 voices classified in the GRBAS scale. The jitter, the shimmer, the harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), and the variance of the short-time energy are utilized as the conventional features. The performances are measured by the classification and regression tree (CART) method. Specifically, the CART-based method by utilizing both the conventional features and the HOS-based ones shows its effectiveness in the pathological voice quality measurement, with the classification accuracy of 87.8%.

  • A Study about the Relationship between Frame Quality and Single Video Quality

    Digital video encapsulates the time series of a frame (still) images, where overall video quality can be obtained by using the quality of each frame image and the temporal information between the frame image. Coding of video produces degradation of these two types of information. These degradations can be classified as spatial degradation (static degradation) of a frame images and temporal degradation between frame image (dynamic degradation). In the framework of video quality evaluation it is necessary to consider those degradations, because their contents are strongly interdependable and quantification is problematic for these degradations. Therefore, the development of an objective video quality assessment method for single video quality requires to investigate how much static degradation and dynamic degradation affect single video quality. In this research, single video quality was predicted highly accuratly by using frame quality as static degradation and frame rate information as dynamic degradation.

  • Image and Video Quality Assessment Using LCD: Comparisons with CRT Conditions

    In this paper, the impact of display on quality assessment is addressed. Subjective quality assessment experiments have been performed on both LCD and CRT displays. Two sets of still images and two sets of moving pictures have been assessed using either an ACR or a SAMVIQ protocol. Altogether, eight experiments have been led. Results are presented and discussed, some differences are pointed out. Concerning moving pictures, these differences seem to be mainly due to LCD moving artefacts such as motion blur. LCD motion blur has been measured objectively and with psycho-physics experiments. A motion-blur metric based on the temporal characteristics of LCD can be defined. A prediction model have been then designed which predict the differences of perceived quality between CRT and LCD. This motion-blur-based model enables the estimation of perceived quality on LCD with respect to the perceived quality on CRT. Technical solutions to LCD motion blur can thus be evaluated on natural contents by this mean.

  • A Masking Model for Motion Sharpening Phenomenon in Video Sequences

    In this paper, we show that motion sharpening phenomenon can be explained as a form of visual masking for a special case where a video sequence is composed of alternate frames with different level of sharpness. A frame of higher sharpness behaves to mask the ambiguity of a subsequent frame of lower sharpness and hence preserves the perceptive quality of the whole sequence. Borrowing the mechanism for visual masking, we formulated a quantitative model for deriving the minimum spatial frequency conditions which preserves the subjective quality of the frames being masked. The quantitative model takes into account three fundamental properties of the video signals, namely the size of motion, average luminance and the power of each frequency components. The psychophysical responses towards the changes of these properties are obtained through subjective assessment tests using video sequences of simple geometrical patterns. Subjective experiments on natural video sequences show that more than 75% of viewers could make no distinction between the original sequence and the one processed using the quantitative model.

  • Study of Spatial Configurations of Equipment for Online Sign Interpretation Service

    This paper discusses the design of configurations of videophone equipment aimed at online sign interpretation. We classified interpretation services into three types of situations: on-site interpretation, partial online interpretation, and full online interpretation. For each situation, the spatial configurations of the equipment are considered keeping the issue of nonverbal signals in mind. Simulation experiments of sign interpretation were performed using these spatial configurations and the qualities of the configurations were assessed. The preferred configurations had the common characteristics that the hearing subject could see the face of his/her principal conversation partner, that is, the deaf subject. The results imply that hearing people who do not understand sign language utilize nonverbal signals for facilitating interpreter-mediated conversation.

    Image quality assessment method is a methodology that measures the difference of quality between the reference image and its distorted one. In this paper, we propose a novel reduced-reference (RR) quality assessment method for JPEG-2000 compressed images, which exploits the statistical characteristics of context information extracted through partial entropy decoding or decoding. These statistical features obtained in the process of JPEG-2000 encoding are transmitted to the receiver as side information and used to estimate the quality of images transmitted over various noisy channels at the decompression side. In the framework of JPEG-2000, the context of a current coefficient is determined depending on the pattern of the significance and/or the sign of its neighbors in three bit-plane coding passes and four coding modes. As the context information represents the local property of images, it can efficiently describe textured pattern and edge orientation. The quality of transmitted images is measured by the difference of entropy of context information between received and original images. Moreover, the proposed quality assessment method can directly process the images in the JPEG-2000 compressed domain without full decompression. Therefore, our proposed can accelerate the work of assessing image quality. Through simulations, we demonstrate that our method achieves fairly good performance in terms of the quality measurement accuracy as well as the computational complexity.

  • Clear Channel Assessment in Ultra-Wideband Sensor Networks

    Impulse ultra-wideband (UWB) is an attractive technology for large ad hoc sensor networks due to its precise ranging capacity, multi-path fading robustness and low radiation power. The transient and carrier-less nature of low radiation pulse and harsh multipath channel condition makes it cumbersome to implement carrier sensing. We proposed clear channel assessment (CCA) based on preamble-assisted modulation (PAM) for UWB sensor networks. Preamble symbols are periodically inserted into the frame payload in the time domain to serve as regular feature for reliable CCA. We simulated the CCA performance in the multipath UWB channel model developed by IEEE 802.15.4a. PAM and CCA configurations were optimized for the distributed carrier sense multiple access protocol. PAM was accepted by 802.15.4a group as an optional feature. Furthermore, the multiplexed preamble symbols can be exploited for channel estimation to improve communication and ranging.

  • QoE Estimation Method for Interconnected VoIP Networks Employing Different Codecs

    VoIP is one of the key technologies for recent telecommunication services. In addition to the migration from the conventional PSTN to IP networks, mobile networks will follow the PSTN in moving to an IP-based infrastructure. Due to limited radio resources, the speech bitrate in mobile networks must be more strongly compressed than is true in PSTN. This will lead to a heterogeneous network environment, in which different speech codecs are employed in fixed and mobile networks. Therefore, from the viewpoint of designing and managing the QoE (Quality of Experience) of end-to-end telephony services, establishing a method to evaluate the quality of VoIP in such a heterogeneous network environment is very important. The quality of speech communication services should be discussed in subjective terms. Subjective quality assessment is time-consuming and expensive, however, so objective quality assessment which estimates subjective quality without carrying out subjective quality experiments is desirable. To establish an objective method to evaluate the end-to-end quality of speech in a heterogeneous network environment, this paper proposes a method for estimating the end-to-end listening quality based on the quality in each individual segment. This method is very important because conventional technologies such as the E-model, which was standardized as ITU-T Recommendation G.107, cannot accurately estimate overall quality based on segmental qualities. The experimentals show that the proposed method offers better performance in terms of quality estimation than the conventional method.

    In this paper we propose a discrete program-size dependent software reliability growth model flexibly describing the software failure-occurrence phenomenon based on a discrete Weibull distribution. We also conduct model comparisons of our discrete SRGM with existing discrete SRGMs by using actual data sets. The program size is one of the important metrics of software complexity. It is known that flexible discrete software reliability growth modeling is difficult due to the mathematical manipulation under a conventional modeling-framework in which the time-dependent behavior of the cumulative number of detected faults is formulated by a difference equation. Our discrete SRGM is developed under an existing unified modeling-framework based on the concept of general order-statistics, and can incorporate the effect of the program size into software reliability assessment. Further, we discuss the method of parameter estimation, and derive software reliability assessment measures of our discrete SRGM. Finally, we show numerical examples of discrete software reliability analysis based on our discrete SRGM by using actual data.
