The scattering of electromagnetic waves by a dielectric grating with planar slanted-fringe is analyzed using the improved Fourier series expansion method. In the analysis, the slanted grating region is divided into layers to make an assembly of stratified thin modulated index layers. This method can be applied to a wide range of periodic structures and is especially effective in the case of planar slanted grating, because the electromagnetic fields in the each layer can easily be obtained by shifting the solution in the first layer. In this paper, the numerical results are given for grating with rectangular and sinusoidal dielectric profiles, and for TM and TE cases of arbitrary incident angle. The diffraction efficiencies obtained by the presented method are compared with the results by the coupled-wave approach; the influences of the slant angle on the diffraction efficiencies at the Wood's anomaly and at the coupling resonance frequency are also discussed.

A fully focused Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image can be obtained only if the raw data processing procedure takes into account the space-variance of the SAR system transfer function. This paper presents a nonconventional Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm which allows an efficient compensation of the space-variant effect. It is specially designed for the SAR data of the Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1) but can be extended to different cases.
A systematic theory of the optimum sub-band interpolation using parallel wavelet filter banks presented with respect to a family of n-dimensional signals which are not necessarily band-limited. It is assumed that the Fourier spectrums of these signals have weighted L2 norms smaller than a given positive number. In this paper, we establish a theory that the presented optimum interpolation functions satisfy the generalized discrete orthogonality and minimize the wide variety of measures of error simultaneously. In the following discussion, we assume initially that the corresponding approximation formula uses the infinite number of interpolation functions having limited supports and functional forms different from each other. However, it should be noted that the resultant optimum interpolation functions can be realized as the parallel shift of the finite number of space-limited functions. Some remarks to the problem of distinction of images is presented relating to the generalized discrete orthogonality and the reciprocal property for the proposed approximation.

This paper describes a noise resistant algorithm for recovering the three-dimensional motion of a rigid object from optical flow. First, it is shown that in the absence of noise three-demensional motion can be obtained exactly by a linear algorithm except in the special case in which the surface of the object is on a general quadratic surface passing through the viewpoint, and the normal vector of the surface at the viewpoint is perpendicular to the translation velocity vector. In the presence of noise, an evaluation function is introduced based on the least squares method. It is shown, however, that the solution which minimizes the evaluation function is not always optimal due to statistical bias. To deal with this problem, a method to eliminate the statistical bias in the evaluation function is proposed for zero mean white noise. Once the statistical bias is eliminated, the solution of the linear algorithm coincides with the correct solution by means of expectation. In this linear algorithm, only the eigenvector corresponding to the zero eigenvalue of a 33 matrix is necessary to find the translational velocity. Once the translational velocity is obtained, the rotational velocity can be computed directly. This method is also shown to be noise resistant by computer simulation.

This paper describes a new algorithm for finding the contours of a moving object in an image sequence. A distinctive feature of this algorithm is its complete bottom-up strategy from image data to a consistent contour description. In our algorithm, an input image sequence is immediately converted to a complete set of quasi logical spatio-temporal measures on each pixel, which provide constraints on varying brightness. Then, candidate regions in which to localize the contour are bounded based on consistent grouping among neighboring measures. This reduces drastically the ambiguity of contour location. Finally, Some mid-level constraints on spatial and temporal smoothness of moving boundaries are invoked, and they are combined with these low-level measures in the candidate regions. This is performed efficiently by the regularization over the restricted trajectory of the moving boundary in the candidate regions. Since any quantity is dimensionless, the results are not affected by varying conditions of camera and objects. We examine the efficiency of this algorithm through several experiments on real NTSC motion pictures with dynamic background and natulal textures.

This paper presents a collision warning system that uses laser radar to measure the distance to a preceding vehicle and issues an audible warning to alert the driver if a safe headway is not maintained. The laser radar system is of the cooperative type in that it detects light reflected from a reflex reflector attached at the rear of other vehicles. With a 10-watt pulsed laser, a maximum detection range of over 100m is obtained. The construction and operation of the collision warning system are described along with the configuration of the optical system used in the laser radar head and the results of detection performance evaluations.

The size and weight of marine pulse radar systems must be limited in order to mount them on board boats. However, the azimuthal resolution of a marine radar with a small antenna is degraded by the antenna beam width. It is desirable to use signal processing techniques to increase both the azimuthal resolution and the range resolution of such systems without changing their external configuration. This paper introduces a resolution enhancement method based on deconvolution, which is a kind of inversion. The frequency domain deconvolution method is described first. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by simulation. Then, an example of resolution enhancement processing is applied to a pulse radar. The results of practical experiments show that this method is a promising way of upgrading radars by simply processing the received signals.

We are concerned with a subclass of deterministic pushdown automata (dpda) called very simple dpda's, and present a new direct branching algorithm for checking the inclusion for a pair of languages accepted by these dpda's. As usual, we take the maximal thickness (i.e., the length of the shortest input strings that make each stack symbol go to empry) of all stack symbols into account as one parameter of the given dpda's. Then the worst-case time complexity of our algorithm is polynomial with respect to these parameters. Without considering the thickness, the complexity is single exponential in the description length of the given dpda's. As far as we are concerned with very simple dpda's, our algorithm is very simple and direct, and is faster and much better than the previously given algorithms for the inclusion problem of dpda's.

This paper presents a potential FM double modulation technique for subcarrier optical transmission in order to improve the input dynamic range. The proposed theory of FM double modulation is presented. The BER performance and input dynamic range are shown theoretically and experimentally compared with conventional direct intensity modulation. It was found that the dynamic range could be experimentally improved by 20dB compared with the conventional method by using FM double modulation. The proposed technique achieved an input dynamic range of 60 dB even when using a commercial Fabri-Perot LD.

An optical receiver for hybrid SCM video distribution systems that distribute AM, QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) and FM TV signals simultaneously is investigated. We propose a novel receiver configuration called the Frequency Division type Receiver (FDR) with consists of a photo detector, filter, and multiple preamplifiers. The receiver is compared with existing receivers in terms of optical sensitivity, distortion characteristics, and configuration simplicity. We clarify that the newly developed FDR type receiver is most suitable for hybrid SCM video distribution systems.

This paper reports performance improvement in an optical fiber feeder for microcellular mobile radio systems. A low noise optical receiver using a transformer resonant circuit is described. With this receiver, CNR degradation due to receiver noise is suppressed to less than 0.9dB. Furthermore, two novel techniques, the use of a multiple-LD transmitter and automatic LD input level control, are proposed. The multiple-LD transmitter increases transmitter output power and reduces the transmitter noise. With a dual-LD transmitter, it is possible to increase the optical loss margin by 3.1dB, which corresponds to transmission length expansion of 6.2km, or to improve the received CNR by 2.8dB, which enables communication range expansion. Automatic LD input level control, which optimizes LD input level according to the received radio power, can expand the actual dynamic range of the up link.

Future research and development directions are also suggested.
A quantum interconnection scheme by controlling the Coulomb interaction between ballistic electrons is proposed in which 2DEG (2 dimensional electron gas) plays the role of an interconnection medium. This concept brings up new possibilities for the interconnection approach in various fields such as parallel processing, telecommunications switching, and quantum functional devices. Cross-over interconnection, address collision, and address selection in a quantum information network system were analyzed as the first step. The obtained results have shown that the interconnection probability can be controlled by the velocity and timing of the ballistic electron emission from the emitter electrode. The proposed interconnection scheme is expected to open up a new field of quantum effect integrated circuits in the 21st century.

GaSb/InAs hot electron transistors (HETs) composed of a type-II misaligned quantum well operate at room temperature. The collector current is well described by the thermionic emission from the emitter. In order to get insight of the electron transport in the HET, the base width was varied or the collector barrier was modulated. The emitter's barrier height for the thermionic emission decreases with decreasing base width. This is caused by the increase of the quantum confinement energy in the InAs base with decreasing base width. Among HETs with a GaSb collector, a GaInSb abrupt layer, or a GaInSb graded layer at the collector edge, the latter type has the largest collector current. This indicates that collector grading reduces not only the collector barrier height, but also the quantum mechanical reflection of electrons. Collector-graded HETs with a 5 nm-thick base show a current gain of 8. The sheet resistance of InAs base is one order of magnitude less than bulk InAs without doping. This reduction is partly due to the accumulation of electrons transferred from the GaSb valence band to the InAs conduction band.

Acceleration techniques have been incorporated into the generalized method of characteristics (GMC) to perform transient analysis of uniform transmission lines, for the special case when the transmission lines are driven by digital signals. These techinques have been proved to improve the simulation speed to a great extent when the analysis is carried out using iterative waveform relaxation method. It has been identified that the load impedance connected to the transmission line has a bearing on the efficiency of one of these acceleration techniques. Examples of an RLCG line terminated with linear loads as well as nonlinear loads are given to illustrate the advantage of incorporating these acceleration techniques.

This letter discusses a behavior of solitons in a Josephson junction transmission line which is described by a perturbed sine-Gordon equation. It is shown that a soliton wave leads a quasi-periodic break down route to chaos in a Josephson transmission line. This route show phase locking, quasi-periodic state, chaos and hyper chaos, and these phenomena are examined by using Poincar
In this paper, a new method of synthesizing multi-level logic circuits directly from binary decision diagrams (BDDs) is proposed. In the simple multiplexer implementation, the depth of the synthesized circuit was always O (n), where n is the number of input variables. The new synthesis method attempts to reduce the depth of circuits. The depth of the synthesized circuits is O (log n log w) where w is the maximum width of given BDDs. The synthesized circuits are 2-rail-input 2-rail-output logic circuits. The circuits have good testability; it is proved that the circuits are robustly path-delay fault testable and also totally self-checking for single stuck-at faults.
