  • A Neurocomputational Approach to the Correspondence Problem in Computer Vision

    A problem which often arises in computer vision is that of matching corresponding points of images. In the case of object recognition, for example, the computer compares new images to templates from a library of known objects. A common way to perform this comparison is to extract feature points from the images and compare these points with the template points. Another common example is the case of motion detection, where feature points of a video image are compared to those of the previous frame. Note that in both of these example, the point correspondence is complicated by the fact that the point sets are not only randomly ordered but have also been distorted by an unknown transformation and having quite different coordinates. In the case of object recognition, there exists a transformation from the object being viewed, to its projection onto the camera's imaging plane, while in the motion detection case, this transformation represents the motion (translation and rotation) of the ofject. If the parameters of the transformation are completely unknow, then all n! permutations must be compared (n : number of feature points). For each permutation, the ensuing transformation is computed using the least-squared projection method. The exponentially large computation required for this is prohibitive. A neural computational method is propopsed to solve these combinatorial problems. This method obtains the best correspondence matching and also finds the associated transform parameters. The method was applied to two dimensional point correspondence and three-to-two dimensional correspondence. Finally, this connectionist approach extends readily to a Boltzmann machine implementation. This implementation is desirable when the transformation is unknown, as it is less sensitive to local minima regardless of initial conditions.

    Recent developments and case studies regarding VLSI device chip failure analysis are reviewed. The key failure analysis techniques reviewed include EMMS (emission microscopy), OBIC (optical beam induced current), LCM (liquid crystal method), EBP (electron beam probing), and FIB (focused ion beam method). Further, future possibilities in failure analysis, and some promising new tools are introduced.

    Results of a DC motor driving test with a power sent by a microwave and extracted with a rectenna array are reported. No significant difference has been observed in the output DC power from the rectenna array between a motor load and a resistive load. Mechanical output could be extracted from the received microwave power with an efficiency of 26%.

    Plasma damage to gate oxide is studied using the test structures with various length antennas. It is shown that the plasma damage to gate oxide can be monitored quantitatively by measuring charge to breakdown (QBD). From the QBD measurements, it is confirmed that the degradation occurs in the duration of over-etching but not in the duration of main etching. The breakdown spots in gate oxide are detected by a photon emission method. The breakdown are caused by plasma damage at the LOCOS edge. A LOCOS structure plays an important role for the degradation by the plasma damage.

    Optical and electrical measurements of thin film n-channel SOI-MOSFETs reveal that the exponential tail in photon emission spectra originates from electron-hole recombination. Bremsstrahlung radiation model as a physical mechanism of photon emission was experimentally negated. Negative threshold voltage shift at the initial stage of high field stress is found to be caused by hole trapping in buried oxide. Subsequent turnover characteristics is explained by a competing process between electron trapping in the front gate oxide and hole trapping in the buried oxide. As to the degradation of transconductance, generated surface state as well as trapped holes in the buried oxide which reduce vertical electric field in SOI film are involved in the complicate degradation of transconductance.

    Problems of realizing a vertex-weighted tree with a given weighted tranamission number sequence are discussed in this paper. First we consider properties of the weighted transmission number sequence of a vertex-weighted tree. Let S be a sequence whose terms are pairs of a non-negative integer and a positive integer. The problem determining whether S is the weighted transmission number sequence of a vertex-weighted tree or not, is called w-TNS. We prove that w-TNS is NP-complete, and we show an algorithm using backtracking. This algorithm always gives a correct solution. And, if each transmission number of S is different to the others, then the time complexity of this is only 0( S 2).Next we consider the d2-transmission number sequence so that the distance function is defined by a special convex function.

    A new evaluation technique of hot carrier degradation is proposed and applied to practical evaluation of p-channel polycrystalline silicon thin film transistors (TFT). The proposed technique introduces emission microscopy which is particularly effective for evaluating TFT devices. We have developed an automatic measurement system in which measurement of the electrical characteristics and monitoring the photo emission are done simultaneously. Using this system, we have identified the dominant mechanism of hot carrier degradation in TFTs, and evaluated the effect of plasma hydrogenation on hot carrier degradation.

    Although the perception of gloss is based on human visual perception, some methods for extracting glossiness, in contrast to human ability, have been proposed involving curved surfaces. Glossiness defined in these methods, however, does not correspond with psychological glossiness perceived by the human eye over the wide range from relatively low gloss to high gloss. In addition, the obtained glossiness in these methods changes remarkably when the curvature radius of the high-gloss object becomes larger than 10mm. In reality, psychological glossiness does not change. These methods, furthermore, are available only for spherical objects. A new method for extracting glossiness is proposed in this study. For the new definition of glossiness, a spatial filter which simulates human retina function is utilized. The light intensity distribution of the curved object is convoluted with the spatial filter. The maximum value Hmax of the convoluted distribution has a high correlation with psychological glossiness Gph. From the relationship between Gph and Hmax, new glossiness Gf is defined. The gloss-extraction equipment consists of a light source, TV camera, an image processor and a personal computer. Cylinders with the curvature radii of 3-30 mm are used as the specimens in addition to spherical balls. In all specimens, a strong correlation, with a correlation coefficient of more than 0.97, has been observed between Gf and Gph over a wide range. New glossiness Gf conforms to Gph even if the curvature radius in more than 10 mm. Based on these findings, it is found that this method for extracting glossiness is useful for the extraction of glossiness of spherical and cylindrical objects over a wide range from relatively low gloss to high gloss.

    The Minimum Covering Run (MCR) expression used for representing binary images has been proposed [1]-[3]. The MCR expression is an adaptation from horizontal and vertical run expression. In the expression, some horizontal and vertical runs are used together for representing binary images in which total number of them is minimized. It was shown that, sets of horizontal and vertical runs representing any binary image could be viewed as partite sets of a bipartite graph, then the MCR expression of binary images was found analogously by constructing a maximum matching as well as a minimum covering in the corresponding graph. In the original algorithm, the most efficient algorithm, proposed by Hopcroft, solving the graph-theoretical problems mentioned above, associated with the Rectangular Segment Analysis (RSA) was used for finding the MCR expression. However, the original algorithm still suffers from a long processing time. In this paper, we propose two new efficient MCR algorithms that are beneficial to a practical implementation. The new algorithms are composed of two main procedures; i.e., Partial Segment Analysis (PSA) and construction of a maximum matching. It is shown in this paper that the first procedure which is directly an improvement to the RSA, appoints well a lot of representative runs of the MCR expression in regions of text and line drawing. Due to the PSA, the new algorithms reduce the number of runs used in the technique of solving the matching problem in corresponding graphs so that satisfactory processing time can be obtained. To clarify the validity of new algorithms proposed in this paper, the experimental results show the comparative performance of the original and new algorithms in terms of processing time.

    Naturalness of expressions reflects various pragmatic factors in addition to grammatical factors. In this paper, we discuss relations between expressions and two pragmatic factors: a point fo view of speaker and a hierarchical relation among participants. Degree of empathy" and class" is used to express these pragmatic factors as one-dimensional notion. Then inequalities and equalities of them become conditions for selecting natural expressions. The authors of this paper formulate conditions as principles about lexical and syntactical constraints, and have implemented a sentence generation grammar using the unification grammar formalism.

    We studied the supply and removal of oil to and from a thin groove and the consequent insertion loss, aiming at matrix optical waveguide switches that utilize optical reflection and transmission effects at the groove. A robot precisely controlled the position of the removal nozzle and the supply needle by a vision servo. The optimum position for the removal nozzle was at the entrance of the groove to a circular oil pool, and the positioning margin was 10-15µm around the optimum position. The on-off ratio of the switching light power at the optimum position was about 30dB. The removal time was proportional to the kinetic viscosity of the oil, and the optimum height of the removal nozzle was independent of the kinetic viscosity of the oil. An analysis of the insertion loss revealed that the main factor in the loss at the reflection is the tilt of the groove wall.

    Among various photonic switching technologies, photonic frequency division multiplexing technology is most promising. In this paper a novel photonic FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing) system is proposed. The proposed system consists of n (multiplicity of frequencies) independent subnetworks, each of which is identified by a specific frequency, and of which each network topology is identical. When a connection is required by a terminal, the network selects a subnetwork that can afford it, and assigns a frequency representing the selected subnetwork to the terminal. This system eliminates frequency converting devices and traffic concentration equipment, which will reduce the size and cost of the system. A very small sized switching system of very large capacity will be easily realized. In this paper, first we will address the basic concept of the proposed system, and then discuss some technical problems and their solutions concerning network configuration, switch matrix structure, subscriber network configuration, control scheme and frequency multiplicity. Some experimental results are also mentioned.

    In this paper, we present a unified model for dialogue understanding involving various sorts of ambiguities, such as lexical, syntactic, semantic, and plan ambiguities. This model is able to estimate and revise the most preferable interpretation of utterances as a dialogue progresses. The model's features successfully capture the dynamic nature of dialogue management. The model consists of two main portions: (1) an extension of first-order logic for maintaining multiple interpretations of ambiguous utterances in a dialogue; (2) a device which estimates and revises the most preferable interpretation from among these multiple interpretations. Since the model is logic-based, it provides a good basis for formulating a rational justification of its current interpretation, which is one of the most desirable aspects in generating helpful responses. These features (contained in our model) are extremely useful for interactive dialogue management.

    The modular and growable photonic ATM switch architecture described in this paper uses both time-division and wavelength-division multiplexing technologies, so the switch capacity can be expanded in both the time and frequency domains. It uses a new implementation of output buffering scheme that overcomes the bottleneck in receiving and storing concurrent ultra fast optical cells. The capacity in one stage of a switch with this architecture can be increased from 32 gigabits per second to several terabits per second in a modular fashion. The proposed switch structure with output channel grouping can greatly reduce the amount of hardware and still guarantee the cell sequence.

  • A Numerical Simulation of the Effects of the Actual Lip Geometry on Acoustic Fields by a Three-Dimensional FEM

    This paper describes an implementation of the finite element method to examine the effects of actual lip shape on the sound radiation. A three-dimensional finite element approach by Galerkin method was used. The accuracy of the calculation of finite element method for the sound radiation was tested by comparing it with the exact solutions for a circular piston radiator on an infinite baffle. Using a set of finite element models of the vocal tract, we calculated the responses to a pure tone input and the sound fields over the frequency range of 100 Hz-7 kHz. The transfer functions are examined in detail for vowels /a/ and /i/ when the shape of the actual lips is simplified as a planeradiation surface. The effects of lip shape on the distribution of sound pressures are also shown in both the vocal tract and the surrounding space of the mouth opening.

    The performance of a drift-diffusion device simulator using massively parallel processors is improved by modifying the preconditioner for the iterative solver and by improving the initial guess for the Newton loop. A grid-to-processor mapping scheme is presented to implement the partitioned natural ordering preconditioner on the CM-5. A new preconditioner called the block partitioned natural ordering, which may include fill-ins, improves performance in terms of CPU time and convergence behavior on the CM-5. A multigrid discretization to implement a block Newton initial guess routine is observed to decrease the CPU time by a factor of two. Extensions of the initial guess routine show further reduction in the final fine grid linear iterations.

    A simulation model for arsenic diffusion in polycrystalline silicon has been developed considering dynamic dopant clustering and polysilicon grain growth kinetics tightly coupled with dopant diffusion and segregation. It was assumed that the polysilicon layer consists of column-like grains surrounded by thin grain-boundaries, so that one dimensional description is permissible for dopant diffusion. The dynamic clustering model was introduced for describing arsenic activation in polysilicon grains, considering the solubility limit increase for arsenic in a polysilicon. For a grain-growth calculation, a previous formula was modified to include a local concentration dependence. The simulation results show that these effects are significant for a high dose implantation case.

  • Ultra Optoelectronic Devices for Photonic ATM Switching Systems with Tera-bits/sec Throughput

    Photonic ATM switching systems with Terabit/s throughput are desirable for future broadband ISDN systems. Since electronic LSI-based ATM switching systems are planned to have the throughput of 160Gb/s, a photonic ATM switching system should take the role of the highest layer in a hybrid switching network which includes electronic LSI-based ATM switching systems as its sub-system. This report discusses the state-of-the-art photonic devices needed for a frequency-self-routing ATM photonic switching system with maximum throughput of 5Tb/s. This kind of systems seems to be a moderate system for the first phase photonic switching system with no insuperable obstacle for initiating development, even though none of the devices and technologies required have yet been developed to meet the specifications. On the contrary, for realizing further enlarged throughput as the second-phase photonic switching system, there are huge fundamental research projects still remaining for establishing the technology utilizing the spectrum broadened over 120nm and highly-dense FDM technologies based on homodyne coherent detection, if supposing a simple architecture. "Ultra devices" seem to be the photonic devices based on new tailored materials of which gain and refractive index are designed to realize ultra-wide spectrum utilization.

  • Recent Free-Space Photonic Switches

    This paper briefly reviews recent studies on free-space photonic switches, and discusses classifications, applications and technical issues to be solved. The free-space photonic switch is a switch that uses light beam interconnections based on free-space optics instead of guided-wave optics. A feature of the free-space switch is its high-density three-dimensional structure that enables compact large-scale switches to be created. In this paper, the free-space switches are classified by their various attributes such as logical network configuration, path-establishment method, number of physical stages, signal-waveform transmission form, interconnection optics and so on. The logical network configuration (topological geometry or topology) is strongly related to the advantages of the free-space switches over the guided-wave switches. The path-establishment method (path-shifting/branching-and-gating) and the number of physical stages (single-stage/multistage) are related to physical switching characteristics. Signal-waveform transmission form (analog/digital) is related to switch application. Interconnection optics (imaging system/micro-beam system) is related to the density and volume of the switching fabric. Examples of the free-space switches (single-stage, analog multistage, digital multistage and photonic ATM switches) are described. Possible applications for analog switches are subscriber-line concentrators, inter-module connectors, and switching networks for parallel or distributed computer systems. Those for digital switches include multistage space-division switches in time-division circuit-switching or packet switching systems (including asynchronous transfer mode [ATM] switching system) for both communications switching systems and parallel/distributed computer systems. Technical issues of the free-space switches (system, device, assembly technique) must be solved before creating practical systems. In particular, the assembly technique is a key issue of the free-space switches.

  • Overview of Photonic Switching Systems Using Time-Division and Wavelength-Division Multiplexing

    The demand for large-capacity photonic switching systems will increase as regular broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) spreads and full-motion video terminals replace telephones. Large-scale and economical optical fiber transmission lines have been built based on time-division (TD) multiplexing. To reduce costs, it is important to increase the channel multiplexity of both transmission and switching systems by using TD and wavelength-division (WD) or frequency-division (FD) technologies. We surveyed photonic switching systems' architecture and switching network structures. Switching can be divided into circuit or synchronous transfer mode (STM) switching, and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching. A variety of photonic STM and ATM switching systems based on the two switching technologies have recently been proposed and demonstrated.
