  • Measuring the Perceived Importance of Speech Segments for Transmission over IP Networks Open Access

    This paper presents a way of using a linear regression model to produce a single-valued criterion that indicates the perceived importance of each block in a stream of speech blocks. This method is superior to the conventional approach, voice activity detection (VAD), in that it provides a dynamically changing priority value for speech segments with finer granularity. The approach can be used in conjunction with scalable speech coding techniques in the context of IP QoS services to achieve a flexible form of quality control for speech transmission. A simple linear regression model is used to estimate a mean opinion score (MOS) of the various cases of missing speech segments. The estimated MOS is a continuous value that can be mapped to priority levels with arbitrary granularity. Through subjective evaluation, we show the validity of the calculated priority values.

    A new seamless symbol rate switchable modem for multi-rate FDMA systems is proposed in this paper. In the new modem, a novel clock phase compensation algorithm makes it possible to switch the symbol rate synchronously between the transmitter and the receiver, with no degradation in BER when the symbol rate is changed. In addition, by matching the interpolation filter to the symbol rate, this modem is capable of operating at lower clock speeds, which greatly reduces the consumption power. Computer simulations confirm its fundamental performance. Simulation results show that the proposed power-efficient symbol rate switchable modem can change the symbol rate without degrading BER performance.

    Popular Web sites form their Web servers into Web server clusters. The Web server cluster operates with a load-balancing algorithm to distribute Web requests evenly among Web servers. The load-balancing algorithms founded on conventional periodic load-information update mechanism are not scalable due to the synchronized update of load-information. We propose a load-balancing algorithm that the load-information update is not synchronized by exploiting variant execution times of executing scripts in dynamic Web pages. The load-information of each server is updated 'individually' by a new load-information update mechanism, and the proposed algorithm supports high scalability based on this individual update. Simulation results have proven the improvement in system performance through another aspect of high scalability. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm guarantees some level of QoS for Web clients by fairly distributing requests. A fundamental merit of the proposed algorithm is its simplicity, which supports higher throughput of the Web switch.

    This paper proposes a subjective model for estimating the quality of video streaming services with dynamic bit-rate control. In a subjective quality assessment test, we clarify users' perceptions of distributed video signals whose quality is time-variant due to dynamic bit-rate control. Using this result, we constructed an estimation model considering the following three characteristics: 1) the influence of the video section where quality degradation is large will strongly affect the overall quality, 2) the impression of a past quality weakens with the passage of time, and 3) the range of evaluation scores becomes wider when the time duration of an evaluation is longer. We found that the proposed model enables the accuracy of estimating overall subjective quality to be dramatically improved compared with that of a model that averages segmental quality. The estimation error of the proposed model is less than the statistical reliability of the subjective score even for verification data. We also show that our findings are applicable to QoS design/management issues for video streaming services with dynamic bit-rate control.

    The 2-terminal shortest path problem is to find a shortest path between two specified vertices in a given graph G. In this paper, we consider this problem in the following situation: G is given before the two vertices are specified so that some preprocessing is allowed to reduce the response time. We present a method for calculating lower bounds of the length of the shortest path for any pair of vertices. Experimental results show that the A* algorithm with our method performs much better than previous methods.

    In this paper by using an exactly analytic approach the clock jitter in the feedback path of the continuous time Delta Sigma modulators (CT DSM) is modeled as an additive jitter noise, providing a time invariant model for a jittery CT DSM. Then for various DAC waveforms the power spectral density (psd) of the clock jitter at the output of DAC is derived and by using an approximation the in-band power of the clock jitter at the output of the modulator is extracted. The simplicity and generality of the proposed approach are the main advantages of this paper. The MATALB and HSPICE simulation results confirm the validity of the proposed formulas.

    Because fault-based attacks on cryptosystems have been proven effective, fault diagnosis and tolerance in cryptography have started a new surge of research and development activity in the field of applied cryptography. Without magnitude comparisons, the Montgomery multiplication algorithm is very attractive and popular for Elliptic Curve Cryptosystems. This paper will design a Montgomery multiplier array with a bit-parallel architecture in GF(2m) with concurrent error detection capability to protect it against fault-based attacks. The robust Montgomery multiplier array with concurrent error detection requires only about 0.2% extra space overhead (if m=512 is as an example) and requires four extra clock cycles compared to the original Montgomery multiplier array without concurrent error detection.

  • Prediction of Human Driving Behavior Using Dynamic Bayesian Networks

    This paper presents a method of predicting future human driving behavior under the condition that its resultant behavior and past observations are given. The proposed method makes use of a dynamic Bayesian network and the junction tree algorithm for probabilistic inference. The method is applied to behavior prediction for a vehicle assumed to stop at an intersection. Such a predictive system would facilitate warning and assistance to prevent dangerous activities, such as red-light violations, by allowing detection of a deviation from normal behavior.

    The increased complexity in system design has brought an explosive growth in functional verification time. Thus, many verification methodologies have been proposed to reduce it. One of them is the co-emulation method in which the hardware accelerator and software simulator work together. This paper presents an effective testbench architecture for accelerated verification and reuse of parts of the testbench in co-emulation. The testbench is divided into a synthesizable part which can be hardware accelerated and a non-synthesizable part which remains on the software simulator. The split blocks of the testbench can be reused in other test environments. Experiments with real world systems show that the proposed verification environment has over 31% higher performance than that of the conventional co-emulation environment.

    We have examined the improvement of filter properties using sapphire and nickel rod trimmers. We measured the resonance frequency of the hairpin resonator in the filter, and examined the difference between the simulated and measured values. When the measured resonance frequency was lower than the simulated frequency, we used a nickel trimmer to increase the resonance frequency, and when high, a sapphire trimmer to decrease the frequency. Our results showed that the use of sapphire and nickel rod trimmers is effective in improving the frequency response of HTS bandpass filters.

    This paper describes an objective measurement method designed to assess the perceived quality for digital videos. The proposed approach can be used either in the context of a reduced reference quality assessment or in the more challenging situation where no reference is available. In that way, it can be deployed in a QoS monitoring strategy in order to control the end-user perceived quality. The originality of the approach relies on the very limited computation resources which are involved, such a system could be integrated quite easily in a real time application. It uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) that allows a continuous time scoring of the video. Experiments conducted on different MPEG-2 videos, with bit rates ranging from 2 to 6 Mbits/s, show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. More specifically, a linear correlation criterion, between objective and subjective scoring, ranging from 0.90 up to 0.95 has been obtained on a set of typical TV videos in the case of a reduced reference assessment. Without any reference to the original video, the correlation criteria remains quite satisfying since it still lies between 0.85 and 0.90, which is quite high with respect to the difficulty of the task, and equivalent and more in some cases than the traditional PSNR, which is a full reference measurement.

    Collective transverse plasma modes in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) can be excited by the moving fluxon lattices. Progressive transformation of the standing-wave-like fluxon-lattice configuration from a triangular lattice to a rectangular lattice takes place as the dynamic fluxon-lattice modes are in resonance with the collective transverse plasma modes. In this paper, we review the progress in terahertz-frequency-range electromagnetic wave generation from the IJJs using the resonance between moving fluxon lattice and the collective transverse plasma modes.

    We propose a design theory of the miniaturized high temperature superconducting (HTS) coplanar waveguide (CPW) bandpass filter (BPF), which is composed of meanderline quarter-wavelength resonator, J- and K-inverters. The J- and K-inverters are realized by using interdigital gap and meander-shape inductor. To evaluate the kinetic inductance of the K-inverter, we fabricate the YBCO resonator connected with K-inverters and redesigned the YBCO filter parameters. Finally, we designed and fabricated the YBCO CPW quarter-wavelength resonator BPF by taking account of the kinetic inductance of the K-inverter. The experimental results are in agreement with the design parameters.

    This paper presents a simple, yet effective hybrid of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) multi-user detection (MUD) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) for direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The proposed hybrid MUD first divides the users into groups, with each group consisting of users with a close power level. The SIC is then used to distinguish users among different groups, while the MMSE MUD is used to detect signals within each group. To further improve the performance impaired by the propagation errors, an information reuse scheme is also addressed, which can be used in conjunction with the hybrid MMSE/SIC MUD to adequately cancel the multiple access interferences (MAIs) so as to attain more accurate detections. Furthermore, the asymptotic multiuser efficiency (AME), a measure to characterize the near-far resistance capability, is also conducted to provide further insights into the new detectors. Furnished simulations, in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels and slow flat Rayleigh fading channels, show that the performances of the proposed hybrid MMSE/SIC detectors, with or without the decision aided scheme, are superior to that of the SIC and, especially, the one with decision aided is close to that of the MMSE MUD but with substantially lower computational complexity.

    Montgomery algorithm has demonstrated its effectiveness in applications like cryptosystems. Most of the existing works on finding the Montgomery inverse of an element over the Galois field are based on the software implementation, which is then extended to derive the scalable hardware architecture. In this work, we consider a fundamental change at the algorithmic level and eliminate the potential problems in hardware implementation which makes the resulting modified Montgomery inverse algorithm over GF(2m) very suitable for hardware realization. Due to its structural simplicity, the modified algorithm can be easily mapped onto a high-speed and possibly low-complexity circuit. Experimental results show that our development can achieve both the area and speed advantages over the previous work when the inversion operation over GF(2m) is under consideration and the improvement becomes more significant when we increase the value of m as in the applications of cryptosystems. The salient property of our development sustains the high-speed operation as well as low hardware complexity over a wide range of m for commercial cryptographic applications and makes it suitable for both the scalable architecture and direct hardware implementation.

    This paper presents a new generative approach for generating two-dimensional signals having both a low peak factor (crest factor) and a flat power spectrum. The flat power spectrum provides zero auto-correlation, except at the zero shift. The proposed method is a generative scheme, not a search method, and produces a two-dimensional signal of size 2(2n1+1)2(2n2+1)2 for an arbitrary pair of positive integers n1 and n2 without any computer search. The peak factor of the proposed signal is equal to the peak factor of a single trigonometric function.

    This paper discusses the least-squares linear filtering and smoothing (fixed-point and fixed-interval) problems of discrete-time signals from observations, perturbed by additive white noise, which can be randomly delayed by one sampling time. It is assumed that the Bernoulli random variables characterizing delay measurements are correlated in consecutive time instants. The marginal distribution of each of these variables, specified by the probability of a delay in the measurement, as well as their correlation function, are known. Using an innovation approach, the filtering, fixed-point and fixed-interval smoothing recursive algorithms are obtained without requiring the state-space model generating the signal; they use only the covariance functions of the signal and the noise, the delay probabilities and the correlation function of the Bernoulli variables. The algorithms are applied to a particular transmission model with stand-by sensors for the immediate replacement of a failed unit.

    This paper proposes a new approach for analog portion testing, which can meet requirements for high-speed and high-accuracy testing simultaneously with reasonable cost. The key concept of the new method is cooperation of an LSI tester and some circuitry built in a target SoC device. We will explain the operation principle of the proposed method. The proposed method can be one of the methods to overcome today's expensive production test of analog portion on SoC (System on Chip) devices which heavily depends on LSI tester capability and will become harder in near future.

    Linearity of a transconductor with a theoretical linear characteristic is deteriorated by mobility degradation, in practice. In this paper, a technique to improve the linearity by combining a source-coupled pair with the transconductor is proposed. The proposed transconductor is the circuit that the deteriorated linearity of the conventional part is compensated by the transconductance characteristic of the source-coupled pair. In order to confirm the validity of the proposed technique, SPICE simulation is carried out. The transconductance change ratio of the proposed technique is about 1% and is 1/10 or less of the conventional circuit.

    The performance of a feedback-type adaptive array antenna (AAA) system placed only at a base station (BS) in an FDD/DS-CDMA system remains insufficiently clear. We evaluate the performance of this system by considering the effect of a rake receiver, spacing distance between antennas, the maximum Doppler frequency (fd), and control delay time (Td) on BER performance. In this system, the mobile station (MS) determines optimum weights of antenna elements and sends them back to BS as feedback information. We assume that the optimum weights are not quantized. Thereby, we estimate the performance degradation of 3GPP transmit diversity system, where the feedback information is quantized using a few bits. Computer simulation results show that the rake receiver achieves better BER performance because of the time diversity effect with rake receiver. The AAA with a wide antenna spacing gives high diversity gain for the received signals. For a high value of fd Td, BER performance becomes worse because weighting factors cannot follow the changing speed of channel characteristics. The degradation in performance of a 3GPP system is clarified.
