In this study, the edge diffraction of a TM-polarized electromagnetic plane wave by two-dimensional dielectric wedges has been analyzed. An asymptotic solution for the radiation field has been derived from equivalent electric and magnetic currents which can be determined by the geometrical optics (GO) rays. This method may be regarded as an extended version of physical optics (PO). The diffracted field has been represented in terms of cotangent functions whose singularity behaviors are closely related to GO shadow boundaries. Numerical calculations are performed to compare the results with those by other reference solutions, such as the hidden rays of diffraction (HRD) and a numerical finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. Comparisons of the diffraction effect among these results have been made to propose additional lateral waves in the denser media.

This contribution introduces a novel, dielectric waveguide based, permittivity sensor. Next to the fundamental hybrid mode theory, which predicts exceptional wave propagation behavior, a design concept is presented that realizes a pseudo-transmission measurement approach for attenuating feed-side reflections. Furthermore, a transmission line length independent signal processing is introduced, which fosters the robustness and applicability of the sensor concept. Simulation and measurement results that prove the sensor concept and validate the high measurement accuracy, are presented and discussed in detail.

Precision microwave measurement systems require highly stable oscillators with both excellent long-term and short-term stability. Compared to components used in laboratory instruments, dielectric resonator oscillators (DRO) offer low phase noise with greatly reduced mechanical complexity. To further enhance performance, phase-locked loop (PLL) stabilization can be used to eliminate drift and provide precise frequency control. In this work, the design of a low-cost DRO concept is presented and its performance is evaluated through simulations and measurements. An open-loop phase noise of -107.2 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency and 12.8 GHz output frequency is demonstrated. Drift and phase noise are reduced by a PLL, so that a very low jitter of under 29.6 fs is achieved over the entire operating bandwidth.

We attempt to design and fabricate of a 4×4 Butler matrix for short-millimeter-wave frequencies by using the microfabrication process for a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) by the synchrotron radiation (SR) direct etching of PTFE and the addition of a metal film by sputter deposition. First, the dimensions of the PTFE SIW using rectangular through-holes for G-band (140-220 GHz) operation are determined, and a cruciform 90 ° hybrid coupler and an intersection circuit are connected by the PTFE SIW to design the Butler matrix. Then, a trial fabrication is performed. Finally, the validity of the design result and the fabrication process is verified by measuring the radiation pattern.

An aperture-shared multi-port waveguide antenna with multiple feeds is presented in this paper. The antenna consists of sequentially rotated four traditional WR-28 waveguides at 28GHz so as to create a multi-polarized function with decoupling between the ports. In addition, a rectangular DR (Dielectric resonator) is mounted at the center of the four apertures to obtain lower mutual coupling over a wide band and to suppress the cross-polarization in the antenna boresight direction. The proposed antenna achieves high gain of 14.4dBi, low mutual coupling of ≤-20dB on average, sufficient cross-polarization discrimination level at ≃20dB in the 27-29GHz frequency band.

A novel compact 5-pole bandpass filter (BPF) using two different types of resonators, one is coaxial TEM-mode resonator and the other dielectric triple-mode resonator, is proposed in this paper. The coaxial resonator is a simple single-mode resonator, while the triple-mode dielectric resonator (DR) includes one TM01δ mode and two degenerate HE11 modes. An excellent spurious performance of the BPF is obtained due to the different resonant behaviors of these two types of resonators used in the BPF. The coupling scheme of the 5-pole BPF includes two cascade triplets (CTs) which produce two transmission zeros (TZs) and a sharp skirt of the passband. Behaviors of the resonances, the inter-resonance couplings, as well as their tuning methods are investigated in detail. A procedure of mapping the coupling matrix of the BPF to its physical dimensions is developed, and an optimization of these physical dimensions is implemented to achieve best performance of the filter. The designed BPF is operated at 1.84GHz with a bandwidth of 51MHz. The stopband rejection is better than 20dB up to 9.7GHz (about 5.39×f0) except 7.85GHz. Good agreement between the designed and theoretically synthesized responses of the BPF is reached, verifying well the proposed configuration of the BPF and its design method.

A novel jig structure for S11 calibration with short/open conditions and one reference material (referred to here as SOM) in dielectric measurement of liquids using a coaxial feed type stepped cut-off circular waveguide and a formula for exact calculation of S11 for the analytical model of the structure using the method of moments (MoM) was proposed. The accuracy and validity of S11 values calculated using the relevant formula was then verified for frequencies of 0.50, 1.5 and 3.0 GHz, and S11 measurement accuracy with each termination condition was verified after calibration with SOM by combining the jig of the proposed structure with the study's electromagnetic (EM) analysis method. The relative complex permittivity was then estimated from S11 values measured with various liquids in the jig after calibration, and differences in results obtained with the proposed method and the conventional jig, the analytical model and the EM analysis method were examined. The validity of the proposed dielectric measurement method based on a combination of the above jig structure, numerical S11 calculation and the calibration method was thus confirmed.

We developed a mantle-cloak antenna by controlling the surface reactance of a dielectric-loaded dipole antenna. First, a mantle-cloak antenna with an assumed ideal metasurface sheet was designed, and band rejection characteristics were obtained by controlling the surface reactance of the mantle cloak. The variable range of the frequency spacing between the operating and stopband frequencies of the antenna was clarified by changing the value of the surface reactance. Next, a mantle-cloak antenna that uses vertical strip conductors was designed to clarify the characteristics and operating principle of the antenna. It was confirmed that the stopband frequency was 1130MHz, and the proposed antenna had a 36.3% bandwidth (|S11| ≤ -10dB) from 700 to 1010MHz. By comparing the |S11| characteristics and the input impedance characteristics of the proposed antenna with those of the dielectric-loaded antenna, the effect of the mantle cloak was confirmed. Finally, a prototype of the mantle-cloak antenna that uses vertical strip conductors was developed and measured to validate the simulation results. The measurement results were consistent with the simulation results.

The microfabrication technique based on synchrotron radiation (SR) direct etching process has recently been applied to construct PTFE microstructures. This paper proposes a PTFE substrate integrated waveguide (PTFE SIW). It is expected that the PTFE SIW contributes to the improvement of the structural strength. A rectangular through-hole is introduced taking the advantage of the SR direct etching process. First, a PTFE SIW for the Q-band is designed. Then, a cruciform 3-dB directional coupler consisting of the PTFE SIW is designed and fabricated by the SR direct etching process. The validity of the PTFE SIW coupler is confirmed by measuring the frequency characteristics of the S-parameters. The mechanical strength of the PTFE SIW and the peeling strength of its Au film are also additionally investigated.

A method for the calibration of S11 at the front surface of a material for a coaxial-feed type cut-off circular waveguide with three reference materials inserted and no short termination condition was proposed as a preliminary step for dielectric measurement in liquids. The equations for jig calibration of S11 with these reference materials were first defined, and the electrostatic capacitance for the analytical model unique to the jig was quantified by substituting the reflection constant (calculated at frequencies of 0.50, 1.5 and 3.0 GHz using the mode-matching (MM) technique) into the equivalent circuit, assuming the sample liquid in the jig. The accuracy of S11 measured using the proposed method was then verified. S11 for the front surface of the sample material was also measured with various liquids in the jig after calibration, and the dielectric constants of the liquids were estimated as an inverse problem based on comparison of S11 calculated from an analytical model using EM analysis via the MM technique with the measured S11 values described above. The effectiveness of the proposed S11 calibration method was verified by comparison with dielectric constants estimated after S11 SOM (short, open and reference material) calibration and similar, with results showing favorable agreement with each method.

Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors(SSPDs or SNSPDs) can detect single photons in a wide spectrum range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared wavelengths. We developed SSPDs for the light wavelength of 900-1100 nm, where it is difficult to achieve high detection efficiency by either Si or InGaAs avalanche photodiodes. We designed and fabricated the SSPD with non-periodic dielectric multilayers (DMLs) composed of SiO2 and TiO2 to enhance the optical absorptance in the wavelength range of 900-1100 nm. We measured the detection efficiency (DE) in the wavelength range of 800-1360 nm using a supercontinuum light source and found that the wavelength dependence of DE was in good agreement with the simulated spectrum of the optical absorptance of the nanowire device on the designed DML. The highest system DE was 81.0% for the wavelength of 980 nm.

In this study, transverse magnetic electromagnetic plane wave scatterings by rectangular cylinders have been analyzed by a high frequency asymptotic method. Scattering field can be generated by the equivalent electric and magnetic currents which are obtained approximately from the geometrical optics (GO) fields. Our formulation is found to be exactly the same with the physical optics (PO) for the conducting cylinders, and it can also be applicable for dielectric cylinders. Numerical calculations are made to compare the results with those by other methods, such as the geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) and HFSS simulation. A good agreement has been observed to confirm the validity of our method.

In this study, a theory for estimating the dielectric properties for unknown materials from three reference materials without using a short condition was developed. Specifically, the relationships linking the S parameter, electrostatic capacity, the measurement instrument and the jig were determined for four equivalent circuits with three reference materials and an unknown material inserted into the jig. An equation for estimation of complex permittivity from three reference materials without short termination was thus derived. The formula's accuracy was then numerically verified for cases in which values indicating the dielectric properties of the reference materials and the actual material differed significantly, thereby verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method. Next, it was also found that dielectric constant could be correctly determined even when the observation plane was moved to the SOL calibration plane on the generator side. The dielectric properties of various liquids in the 0.50, 1.0 and 2.5 GHz bands as measured using the proposed method were then compared with corresponding conventional-method values. Finally, the validity of the proposed method was also indicated by measurement values showing the frequency characteristics of dielectric properties at frequencies ranging from 0.50 to 3.0 GHz.

We show that light leakage that occurs in reflective polarizers at large angles of incidence can be suppressed by using anisotropic dielectric multilayers with larger reflective indices in thickness direction and that the interference-included 2×2 Jones matrix method is useful for the investigation of the optical propagation properties of the dielectric multilayers. The thickness of the reflective polarizer can also be reduced by optimizing the distribution of the multilayers in the stack, whilst considering the visual sensitivity. These results indicate that it is possible to realize a high-quality liquid crystal display with wide viewing angles and high light utilization efficiency.

In this study, expressions were compared with reference material using the coaxial feed-type open-ended cut-off circular waveguide reflection method to support simple and instantaneous evaluation of dielectric constants in small amounts of scarce liquids over a broad frequency range. S11 values were determined via electromagnetic analysis for individual jig structure conditions and dielectric property values without actual S11 measurement under the condition that the tip of the measurement jig with open and short-ended conditions and with the test material inserted. Next, information on the relationships linking jig structure, dielectric properties and S11 properties was stored on a database to simplify the procedure and improve accuracy in reference material evaluation. The accuracy of the estimation formula was first theoretically verified for cases in which values indicating the dielectric properties of the reference material and the actual material differed significantly to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicated that dielectric property values for various liquids measured at 0.5 and 1.0GHz using the proposed method corresponded closely to those obtained using the method previously proposed by the authors. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by determining the dielectric properties of certain liquids at octave-range continuous frequencies between 0.5 and 1.0GHz based on interpolation from limited data of several frequencies. The results indicated that the approach enables quicker and easier measurement to establish the complex permittivity of liquids over a broad frequency range than the previous method.
