  • A Compact, High-Efficiency, High-Power DC-DC Converter

    A 10-kW (53V/200A), forced-air-cooled DC-DC converter has been developed for fuel cell systems. This converter uses new high-voltage bipolar-mode static induction transistors (BSIT), a new driving method, a zero-voltage-switched pulse-width-modulation technique, and a new litz wire with low AC resistance. It weighs only 16.5kg, has a volume of 26,000cm3, operates at 40kHz, and has a power conversion efficiency of about 95%. The power loss of this converter is 20% less than that of conventional natural-air-cooled DC-DC converters, and the power density is 3 times as high.

  • Overload Control for the Intelligent Network and Its Analysis by Simulation

    This paper reports an overload control method for the Intelligent Network (IN). The IN, which is being investigated as a future communication network, facilitates both rapid introduction of new services and easy modification of existing services. In the IN, the call processing functions and data needed to achieve IN services are distributed over several nodes. Therefore, traffic demand for the various services may cause varying patterns of node overloads. It is therefore important to develop effective overload control methods and to evaluate their characteristics. We propose an overload control method and evaluate its characteristics in comparison with other methods under various overload traffic patterns with a network simulator that models all nodes and their relationships in the IN. In particular, we focus on three aspects of overload control: how can high throughput be maintained, how can an overloaded node be stabilized, and how can fair access be guaranteed.

  • A New Concept of Network Dimensioning Based on Quality and Profit

    We propose a new concept of network dimensioning, which is based not only on the grade of service but also on profit. In traditional network dimensioning methodology, the number of circuits on links is designed under a cost-minimization concept with grade of service constraints. Recently, telecommunication markets have become very large and competitive; therefore, we believe that a profit viewpoint is now essential. However, it is difficult to calculate profit in almost all the dimensioning methods currently used, because they mainly employ peak-hour traffic data, while profit depends on all the hourly traffic data which contain both peak and off-peak data. In this paper, we propose using all the hourly traffic data in network dimensioning. From these data and telephone charges for each hour, revenues will be estimated. On the other hand, facility costs will be estimated from the number of circuits. Finally, we can estimate profit from the difference between revenues and facility costs. Focusing on both quality and profits in network dimensioning leads to more advanced quality management and quality control in telecommunications networks than with traditional methodology. This paper outlines a dimensioning method based on profit, and describes its properties, some applications of it, and summarizes further studies.

  • Group Communications Algorithm for Dynamically Updating in Distributed Systems

    This paper proposes a novel updating technique, dynamically updating, for achieving extension or modification of functions in a distributed system. Usual updating technique requires synchronous suspension for multiple processes for avoiding unspecified reception caused by the conflict of different versions of processes. Thus, this technique needs very high overhead and it must restrict the types of distributed systems, to which it can be applied, to RPC (remote procedure call) type or client-server type. Using the proposed dynamically updating technique, updating management can be invoked asynchronously by each process with assurance of correct execution of the system, i.e., the system can cope with the effect of unspecified reception caused by mixture of different version processes. Therefore, low overhead updating can be achieved in partner type distributed systems, that is more general type including communications systems or computer networks. Dynamically updating technique is implemented by using a novel distributed algorithm that consists of group communication, checkpoint setting, and rollback recovery. By using the algorithm proposed in this paper, rollback recovery can be achieved with the lowest overhead, i.e., a set of checkpoint determines the last global state for consistent rollback recovery and a set of processes that need to rollback simultaneously is the smallest one. This paper also proves the correctness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Performance Evaluation of Routing Schemes in B-ISDN

    We investigated performance of routing schemes in B-ISDN, for heterogeneous traffic flows under various bandwidths. In particular, we compared the simulated performance of these schemes by evaluating their blocking probabilities. To achieve high performance, these schemes use special kinds of routing algorithm, one which is pre-selection algorithm and one which is cyclic algorithm. We investigated the efficiency of the pre-selection algorithm and the robustness of the cyclic algorithm for nonuniform traffic and network resources. We found that these routing algorithm schemes can compensate for errors in resource design.

    In this paper, the ATM Mini-Bar System (AMBS) which is a future information providing service infrastructure is proposed. The purpose of AMBS is to provide a multi-media environment in which a user can (1) select and get quickly any needed information, in low cost, at any time, among very large amount of different media information provided by a variety of providers, (2) be charged only for the information which is selected and used, (3) edit or process informations into users' individually requested style or format before using them. The basic concept and configurations of AMBS are also addressed. This system is basically a center-end oriented one-way information providing system. The information center broadcasts its contents to all user equipments based on a user request forecast, and every user equipment stores the delivered contents in its large storage. A user can select one's needed informations from the storage, and may edit or process them within the user equipment. The charge is only on the read informations from the storage, not on all contents in it. The key points of this system are the following three. (A) Introduction of a broadcast (or multicast) media for economical information delivery (exactly speaking, it is a predelivery which means a delivery before request) to user equipments. (B) Introduction of a 1 to 1 communication network for selective charging and control of each user equipments. (C) Introduction of the user equipment storage for Quick response to user information request in most cases with the broadcast (or multicast) information delivery media described above, Separation of information delivery speed and replay speed to increase system flexibility, Local user information processing or editing. As an example of technical solutions, a memory architecture, which is based on hierarchical architecture, is described. AMBS is expected to give some impacts to information industries because it can integrate many kinds of services into the same platform, but some standerdization items are needed to realize it.

    Next generation personal communication systems will provide a range of different services to moving users. In parallel, packet switching is being proposed as a way to statistical multiplexing and hence to better resource exploitation. The co-existence of different services may prove difficult due to the different requirements on quality of service parameters like packet loss, delay, and so on. This requires a careful design of Call Admission Control policies, which are to be quite different from those used in fixed network, due to two phenomena which are typical of mobile systems, namely co-channel interference and handovers. In this paper we address these complex topics, and propose some basic rules for Call Admission Control policies suitable in this context.

    Over the last decade, the Internet has been extremely successful by distinguishing between overlaying applications and underlying networking technologies. This approach allows rapid and independent improvement in both networking and application technologies. The internetworking layer that divides applications and the network enables the Internet to function as a general and evolving infrastructures for data communications. The current Internet architecture offers only best-effort data delivery. However, recent emerging computer and networking technologies, demand the Internet guaranteed performance. In particular, audio and video applications have more rigid delay requirement than those applications which the current Internet supports. To offer guaranteed services in addition to best-effort services, both a new service model and a new architecture are necessary in the Internet architecture. The paper surveys researches and experiments conducted in the Internet community to accommodate a wide variety of qualities of services.

    The Manchester Dataflow Machine (MDFM) works with tasks of size equal to one single instruction. This fine granularity aims at exploring all parallelism at the instruction level. However, this project decision increases the instruction communication cost, which ends up to jam the interconnection network and reduces the system performance. One way to skirt this problem is to adopt variable size tasks instead of working with such small task size. In this paper, in order to study whether or not the usage of such variable size tasks in the MDFM architecture contributes to the improvement of the performance, some simulations by toy programs take place. In the simulation, variable size tasks are realized by packing the sequential instruction stretches into one task. To manage this packing, the Sequential Block (SB) technique is developed. The simulation of those packed and unpacked programs give an outline of advantages and disadvantages of working with variable size tasks, and how the SB technique should be implemented in the system.

This paper describes in detail Ni/MH and lithium ion secondary batteries, and reports on their development state and characteristics.

    We discuss properties of acyclic graph evolution driven by node-firing. The research background and basic concepts of acyclic graph evolution are from the mutual exclusion problem in distributed environments. We proposed in our previous work a mutual exclusion protocol which is based on the notion of evolution trajectories of acyclic graphs. In this paper, we analyze firing concurrency and periodicity of the acyclic graph evolution, from graph theoretical point of views, and investigate topological conditions for assuring the number of firable nodes below a some fixed constant, at any instance of the evolution trajectory. A marked graph, a subclass of Petri nets, is often utilized as a proof tool in analysis.

    A novel delivery management system using a new lot sampling scheduling (LSS) method has been developed. The method involves the concepts of "virtual line" and "marker lot," and the system consists of an on-line scheduler executing short-period scheduling for lot-tracking and an off-line scheduler executing long-period scheduling for delivery date simulation. The LSS method can hugely increase the maximum number of lots to simulate the delivery date and also control TAT more effectively compared to conventional dynamic scheduling. Lot progress is controlled by varying the resource allocation ratio for each virtual line. This method is effective for precise delivery date control of lots with various priorities in ASIC production or development lines.

    Thickness dependence of breakdown properties in control and N2O-Oxynitrided oxides was investigated. Nitrogen atoms piled up at the Si/SiO2 interface increase charge-to-breakdown (QBD) under substrate injection conditions for oxide thickness below 10 nm, while no meaningful improvement is observed above 10 nm. This thickness dependence is explained by the fact that N2O-oxynitridation reduces oxide defects near the Si/SiO2 interface. N2O-oxynitridation of the oxides reduces the number of neutral electron traps due to the chemical reaction of oxide defect with nitrogen atoms. Electron trapping of N2O-oxynitrided oxides is significantly suppressed; the reduction of electron trapping events into neutral electron traps increases QBD under substrate injection. On the other hand, under gate injection, N2O-oxynitrided oxides show low rate of hole trapping during the initial stress period. However, in heavily injected condition, electron trapping is not suppressed, resulting in little improvement of QBD. In addition, the control and N2O-oxynitrided oxides show quite similar dependence of QBD on stress current density, which is related primarily to the carrier transport phenomena (tunneling, traveling, impact ionization and hole injection).

  • Performance Bounds on Scheduling Parallel Tasks with Communication Cost

    This paper investigates the problem of scheduling parallel tasks" with consideration of communication cost on an m-processor system, where processors are assumed to be identical and tasks being scheduled are independent such that they can run on more than one processor simultaneously. Once a task is processed in parallel, its finish time will be speeded up, but communication cost will also be incurred and should be taken into account. To find a schedule with minimum finish time for the parallel tasks scheduling problem is NP-hard. Therefore, in this paper, we will propose a heuristic algorithm for this kind of problem and derive its performance bounds for two different cases of applications, respectively.

    There are various difficulties in processing spoken dialogs because of acoustic, phonetic, and grammatical ill-formedness, and because of interactions among participants. This paper describes temporal characteristics of utterances in human-human task-oriented dialogs and interactions between the participants, analyzed in relation to the topic structure of the dialog. We analyzed 12 task-oriented simulated dialogs of ASJ continuous speech corpus conducted by 13 different participants whose total length being 66 minutes. Speech data was segmented into utterance units each of which is a speech interval segmented by pauses. There were 3876 utterance units, and 38.9% of them were interjections, fillers, false starts and chiming utterances. Each dialog consisted of 6 to 15 topic segments in each of which participants exchange specific information of the task. Eighty-six out of 119 new topic segments started with interjectory utterances and filled pauses. It was found that the durations of turn-taking interjections and fillers including the preceding silent pause were significantly longer in topic boundaries than the other positions. The results indicate that the duration of interjection words and filled pauses is a sign of a topic shift in spoken dialogs. In natural conversations, participants' speaking modes change dynamically as the conversation develops. Response time of both client and agent role speakers became shorter as the dialog proceeded. This indicates that interactions between the participants become active as the dialog proceeds. Speech rate was also affected by the dialog structure. It was generally fast in the initiating and terminating parts where most utterances are of fixed expressions, and slow in topic segments of the body part of the dialog where both client and agent participants stalled to speak in order to retrieve task knowledge. The results can be utilized in man-machine dialog systems, e.g., in order to detect topic shifts of a dialog, and to make the speech interface of dialog systems more natural to a human participant.

    In this paper we introduce a new feature called stroke index for document image analysis. It is based on the minimum covering run expression method (MCR). This stroke index is a function of the number of horizontal and vertical runs in the original image and of number of runs by the MCR expression. As document images may present a variety of patterns such as graph, text or picture, it is necessary for image understanding to classify these different patterns into categories beforehand. Here we show how one could use this stroke index for such applications as classification or segmentation. It also gives an insight on the possibility of stroke extraction from document images in addition to classifying different patterns in a compound image.

  • Considerations on Network Performance of 64kbit/s-Based Services in an ATM Network

    This paper deals with network performance of 64kbit/s-based services supported in an ATM network and an ATM interworking network with 64kbit/s-based networks. It first clarifies network performance issues giving a model and objectives of study and experiment. A result of computational analysis is then presented, where a cell loss ratio of an order of 10-4 or 10-5 is obtained to give a performance equivalent to that currently used as objective values in existing networks for a 64kbit/s digital level. In order to capture the impact of cell loss and associated performance for application levels, an experimental test has been carried out using typical applications. Test results show that the cell loss ratio needs to be approximately ten times better than the bit error ratio for comparable performance for application levels. A cell loss ratio of better than 10-5, or an order of 10-6 considering an interworking situation, seems to be necessary according to the test results. It is further clarified by the test that a single cell is more valuable than a multiplexed cell for providing better cell loss resilience characteristics. Although not all applications of 64kbit/s networks have been tested, it is expected that the test results can be used as guidance for considering the support of 64 kbit/s services in an ATM and interworking networks.

    Telecommunication services are expected to be upgraded from POTS to B-ISDN services in the future. This means that the conventional metallic access networks should be upgraded to optical fiber access networks because of providing high bit-rate services. Therefore, it is very important to clarify upgrade strategies in access networks. This paper proposes a dynamic evaluation method that can support decision-making on the upgrade strategy from the viewpoint of economy. This method can determine the most promising future access network and upgrade timing. Moreover, viability of various upgrade strategies can be evaluated by this method.

    A key element in the CDMA transmission is DS spreading. Spreading in a DS/SSMA system are provided in two categories-synchronization and data. For synchronization sequences, good auto-correlation and cross-correlation properties are required in order to guarantee fast acquistion with a minimum false alarm probability. On the other hand, the auto-correlation property may not be so important in data spreading since synchronization is obtained by synchronization spreading. In this paper we provide a set of synchronization sequences and a set of data sequences--each a set of binary N-tuples--that have the necessary correlation constraints.

    Many typical control problems such as deadlock avoidance problems and mutual exclusion problems can be formulated as forbidden marking problems. This paper studies a forbidden marking problem in controlled complementary-places Petri nets, which are suitable model for sequential control systems. We show a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a control law for this problem. We also obtain a maximally permissive control law which allows a maximal number of transitions to fire subject to a condition that forbidden markings will never be reached.
