    Interfaces between a coaxial structure and a post-wall waveguide are proposed as the essential components for cost-effective millimeter-wave modules. PTFE substrate is selected in terms of loss and manufacturability. The reflection and the transmission characteristics are investigated. The short-stepped and the short-taper-stepped feeding structures provide 14.7% and 13.2% bandwidths for the reflection smaller than -15 dB, respectively. The 4640 mm2 size antenna fed by the short-stepped structure in PTFE substrate gives 27.3 dBi with 58.2% efficiency at 60.0 GHz. Feeding structures in PTFE substrate fulfill electrical and manufacturing demands in millimeter-wave bands.

    HfOxNy thin films formed by the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) Ar/N2 plasma nitridation of HfO2 films were investigated for high-k gate insulator applications. HfOxNy thin films formed by the ECR Ar/N2 plasma nitridation (60 s) of 1.5-nm-thick HfO2 films, which were deposited on chemically oxidized Si(100) substrates, were found to be effective for suppressing interfacial layer growth or crystallization during postdeposition annealing (PDA) in N2 ambient. After 900 PDA of for 5 min in N2 ambient, it was found that HfSiON film with a relatively high dielectric constant was formed on the HfOxNy/Si interface by Si diffusion. An equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) of 2.0 nm and a leakage current density of 1.010-3 A/cm2 (at VFB-1 V) were obtained. The effective mobility of the fabricated p-channel metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MISFET) with the HfOxNy gate insulator was 50 cm2/Vs, and the gate leakage current of the MISFET with the HfOxNy gate insulator was found to be well suppressed compared with the MISFET with the HfO2 gate insulator after 900 PDA because of the nitridation of HfO2.

    A cell search technique utilizing a known postfix for OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) cellular systems is described. The known postfix is generated in the time domain by inserting pilots in the frequency domain and plays the role of the cyclic prefix in general OFDM systems. Since it demonstrates good correlation properties, it can be facilitated to synchronize each symbol with an identified postfix. In this paper, two different known postfixes are allocated to each cell. One is used for cell identification and symbol synchronization, which is designed to be different among neighboring cells. The other is used for frame synchronization and is the same for all cells. In the simulation, the cell search is accomplished with a probability greater than 10-3 at -27 dB in a vehicular channel. Even at -30 dB, the cell search probability is greater than 10-2 in a pedestrian channel as well as 10-3 in the AWGN (additive white gaussian noise) channel.

  • Low Computing Post Processing to Suppress Annoying Artifacts of Compressed Video Sequences

    In this paper, we introduce a low computing post processing algorithm to simultaneously suppress blocking and ringing artifacts of compressed video sequences. A new regularization function to incorporate smoothness to neighboring pixels is defined, where the function is composed of four sub-functions combined with pixel-based data fidelity and smoothing terms. Therefore, the solution can be obtained without inverse matrix or vector-matrix computation, so that low complexity implementation is possible. In addition, the regularization parameter controlling the relative importance between the data fidelity and the degree of smoothness is estimated from the available overhead information in decoder, such as, macroblock type and quantization step size. The experimental results show the capability and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

    In this paper, a three-way divider is proposed for a partially-corporate feed in an alternating phase-fed single-layer slotted waveguide array. The divider is placed at the middle of the feed waveguide and reduces the long line effects; the frequency bandwidth is doubled. It is a kind of cross junction with one input port and three output ports; most of the power is equally divided into the right and left halves of the feed waveguide while the rest of power goes straight into the center radiating waveguide. Based upon the moment method design of the three-way divider, an inductive post is introduced for wide band power dividing control to the radiating waveguide. Reflection is below -20 dB over a wide bandwidth of 24.3-26.3 GHz, and the range of power dividing ratio ranges from 1/43 to 1/4. The amplitude and the phase from the two output ports to the feed waveguide are well balanced, and the differences are less than 0.1 dB and 5.0 degrees, respectively. The MoM analysis and the wide band design are verified experimentally in the 4 GHz band.

    A detector based on calculation of a posteriori probability is proposed for code acquisition in singleuser direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems. Available information is used for decision making, unlike conventional methods which only use a part of it. Although this increases the overhead in terms of additional memory and computational complexity, significant performance improvements are achieved. The frame work is extended to multiuser systems and again mean acquisition time/correct acquisition probability performance is superior to the conventional systems although computational complexity is high. An approximate multiuser method with significantly less complexity is also derived.

  • Real Time Search for Similar Hand Images from Database for Robotic Hand Control

    The authors propose a system for searching the shape of human hands and fingers in real time and with high accuracy, without using any special peripheral equipment such as range sensor, PC cluster, etc., by a method of retrieving similar image quickly with high accuracy from a large volume of image database containing the complicated shapes and self-occlusions. In designing the system, we constructed a database in a way to be adaptable even to differences among individuals, and searched CG images of hand similar to unknown hand image, through extraction of characteristics using high-order local autocorrelational patterns, reduction of the amount of characteristics centering on principal component analysis, and prior rearrangement of data corresponding to the amount of characteristics. As a result of experiments, our system performed high-accuracy estimation of human hand shape where mean error was 7 degrees in finger joint angles, with the processing speed of 30 fps or over.

    We present a model of quantization noise in block-coded videos with some assumptions in wavelet domain and propose a postprocessing method to reduce the quantization noise based on the model. A frame of video sequences is considered as a set of one-dimensional (1-D) horizontal and vertical signals. The quantization noise is considered as the sum of the blocking noise and the remainder noise. We model the blocking noise as an impulse or that along with a dispersed impulse at each block boundary in the wavelet domain. The validity of the blocking noise model is investigated. We also model the remainder noise as white Gaussian noise at non-edge pixels in the wavelet domain. Whether the model accommodates well to the remainder noise or not is also examined. The blocking noise is reduced by subtracting a profile, whose strength is adaptively estimated, at each block boundary from the coded signal. The remainder noise then is reduced by a soft-thresholding. We also propose a fast algorithm for the proposed method by approximating coefficients of shape profiles used in blocking noise reduction and inverse wavelet transform (WT) filters used in remainder noise reduction. The performance is evaluated for QCIF video sequences coded by H.263 TMN5 with quantization parameter (QP) in the range of 5-25 and is compared to that of the MPEG-4 verification model (VM) post-filter. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields not only PSNR improvement of maximum 0.5 dB over the VM post-filter but also subjective quality nearly free of the blocking artifact and edge blur.

    Our goal in this paper is to provide a complete detection analysis for the OS processor along with OSGO and OSSO modified versions, for M postdetection integrated pulses when the operating environment is nonideal. Analytical results of performance are presented in both multiple-target situations and in regions of clutter power transitions. The primary and the secondary interfering targets are assumed to be fluctuating in accordance with the Swerling II target fluctuation model. As the number of noncoherently integrated pulses increases, lower threshold values and consequently better detection performances are obtained in both homogeneous and multiple target background models. However, the false alarm rate performance of OSSO-CFAR scheme at clutter edges is worsen with increasing the postdetection integrated pulses. As predicted, the OSGO-CFAR detector accommodates the presence of spurious targets in the reference window, given that their number is within its allowable range in each local window, and controls the rate of false alarm when the contents of the reference cells have clutter boundaries. The OSSO-CFAR scheme is useful in the situation where there is a cluster of radar targets amongst the estimation cells.

    The authors realize a 50% length reduction of short-slot couplers in a post-wall dielectric substrate by two techniques. One is to introduce hollow rectangular holes near the side walls of the coupled region. The difference of phase constant between the TE10 and TE20 propagating modes increases and the required length to realize a desired dividing ratio is reduced. Another is to remove two reflection-suppressing posts in the coupled region. The length of the coupled region is determined to cancel the reflections at both ends of the coupled region. The total length of a 4-way Butler matrix can be reduced to 48% in comparison with the conventional one and the couplers still maintain good dividing characteristics; the dividing ratio of the hybrid is less than 0.1 dB and the isolations of the couplers are more than 20 dB.

    This paper reports on the suitability of the SUSAN filter for the removal of artifacts that result from quantization errors in wavelet video coding. In this paper two extensions of the original filter are described. The first uses a combination of 2-D spatial filtering followed by 1-D temporal filtering along motion trajectories, while the second extension is a pure 3-D motion compensated SUSAN filter. The SUSAN approach effectively reduces coding artifacts, while preserving the original signal structure, by relying on a simple pixel-difference-based classification procedure. Results reported in the paper clearly indicate that both extensions efficiently reduce ringing that is the prevalent artifact perceived in wavelet-based coded video. Experimental results indicate an increase in perceptual as well as objective (PSNR) decoded video quality, which is competitive with state-of-the-art post-processing algorithms, especially when low computational demands of the proposed approach are taken into account.

    A post-wall waveguide slot array with a three-way power divider on a single-layer substrate is designed to have a H-plane sectoral beam and an E-plane cosecant pattern with null-filling. Experiments in the 26 GHz band confirmed the sectoral beam with a -3 dB beam width of 117 deg and a ripple width of 2 dB in the sector.

  • Feed through an Aperture to a Post-Wall Waveguide with Step Structure

    We propose an aperture coupling E-bend with step structure as a robust post-wall waveguide interface to an external standard waveguide in which the posts are separated from the aperture. A 61.25 GHz model transformer gives 11.4% bandwidth for the reflection below -25 dB by using a 1.2 mm-height dielectric substrate. We have compared the mechanical tolerances of both the conventional straight structure and the proposed step structure. The step structure is more robust against mechanical errors than the conventional one. Another advantage is that the accuracy of the analysis model for the post-wall to metal-wall replacement is enhanced for the step structure.

    This paper proposes a post-layout transistor sizing method for crosstalk noise reduction. The proposed method downsizes the drivers of aggressor wires for noise reduction, utilizing the precise interconnect information extracted from the detail-routed layouts. We develop a transistor sizing algorithm for crosstalk noise reduction under delay constraints, and construct a crosstalk noise optimization method utilizing an analytic crosstalk noise model and a transistor sizing framework that have been developed. Our method exploits the transistor sizing framework that can vary transistor widths inside cells with interconnects unchanged. Our optimization method therefore never causes a new crosstalk noise problem, and does not need iterative layout optimization. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally examined using 2 circuits. The maximum noise voltage is reduced by more than 50% without delay violation. These results show that the risk of crosstalk noise problems can be considerably reduced after detail-routing.

    For future high-speed wireless communications using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), two major system requirements will emerge: throughput improvement and rich interference elimination. Because of its broadband nature and limited frequency allocations worldwide, interference from co-located wireless LAN's operating in the same frequency band will become a serious deployment issue. Adaptive array antenna can enhance the performance by suppressing the co-channel interference even when interference may have a large amount of multipath and also have similar received power to the desired signal. There are typically two types of adaptive array architecture for OFDM systems, whose signal processing is carried out before or after FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). In general, the pre-FFT array processing has low complexity, but in rich multipath and interference environments, the performance will deteriorate drastically. In contrast, the post-FFT array processing can provide the optimum performance even in such severe environments at the cost of complexity. Therefore, complexity-reduction techniques combined with the achievement of high system performance will be a key issue for adaptive array antenna applications. This paper proposes novel adaptive array architecture, which is a complexity-reduction technique using subcarrier clustering for post-FFT adaptive array. In the proposed scheme, plural subcarriers can be clustered into a group with the same spatial weight. Simulation results show that the proposed architecture is a promising candidate for real implementation, since it can achieve high performance with much lower complexity even in a rich multipath environment with low signal to noise plus interference ratio (SNIR).

    This paper describes a real-time blind source separation (BSS) method for moving speech signals in a room. Our method employs frequency domain independent component analysis (ICA) using a blockwise batch algorithm in the first stage, and the separated signals are refined by postprocessing using crosstalk component estimation and non-stationary spectral subtraction in the second stage. The blockwise batch algorithm achieves better performance than an online algorithm when sources are fixed, and the postprocessing compensates for performance degradation caused by source movement. Experimental results using speech signals recorded in a real room show that the proposed method realizes robust real-time separation for moving sources. Our method is implemented on a standard PC and works in realtime.

  • Quantization Noise Reduction for DCT Coded Images

    By modelling the quantization error as additive white noise in the transform domain, Wiener filter is used to reduce quantization noise for DCT coded images in DCT domain. Instead of deriving the spectrum of the transform coefficient, a DPCM loop is used to whiten the quantized DCT coefficients. The DPCM loop predicts the mean for each coefficient. By subtracting the mean, the quantized DCT coefficient is converted into the sum of prediction error and quantization noise. After the DPCM loop, the prediction error can be assumed uncorrelated to make the design of the subsequent Wiener filter easy. The Wiener filter is applied to remove the quantization noise to restore the prediction error. The original coefficient is reconstructed by adding the DPCM predicted mean with the restored prediction error. To increase the prediction accuracy, the decimated DCT coefficients in each subband are interpolated from the overlapped blocks.

  • Harmonic Model Based Excitation Enhancement for Low-Bit-Rate Speech Coding

    A new excitation enhancement technique based on a harmonic model is proposed in this paper to improve the speech quality of low-bit-rate speech coders. This technique is employed only in the decoding process of speech coders and improves high-frequency components of excitation. We develop the procedure of harmonic model parameters estimation and harmonic generation and apply the technique to a current state-of-art low bit rate speech coder. Experiments on spectrum reading and spectrum distortion measurement show that the proposed excitation enhancement technique improves speech quality.

    This paper presents a newly developed noise post-processing (NPP) algorithm and the results of several tests demonstrating its subjective performance. This NPP algorithm is designed to improve the subjective performance of low bit-rate code excited linear prediction (CELP) decoding under background noise conditions. The NPP algorithm is based on a stationary noise generator and improves the subjective quality of noisy signal input. A backward adaptive detector defines noisy input signal frames from decoded LSF, energy, and pitch parameters. The noise generator estimates and produces stationary noise signals using past line spectral frequency (LSF) and energy parameters. The stationary noise generator has a frame erasure concealment (FEC) scheme designed for stationary noise signals and therefore improves the speech decoder's robustness for frame erasure under background noise conditions. The algorithm has been applied to the following CELP decoders: 1) a candidate algorithm of the ITU-T 4-kbit/s speech coding standard and 2) existing ITU-T standards, the G.729 and G.723.1 series. In both cases, NPP improved the subjective performance of the baseline decoders. Improvements of approximately 0.25 CMOS (CCR MOS: comparison category rating mean opinion score) and around 0.2-0.8 DMOS (DCR MOS: degradation category rating mean opinion score) were demonstrated in the results of our subjective tests when applied to the 4-kbit/s decoder and G.729/G.723.1 decoders respectively. Other test results show that NPP improves the subjective performance of a G.729 decoder by around 0.45 in DMOS under both error-free and frame-erasure conditions, and a further improvement of around 0.2 DMOS is achieved by the FEC scheme in the noise generator.

  • A New Post-Filtering Algorithm for Residual Acoustic Echo Cancellation in Hands-Free Mobile Application

    We consider a new post-filtering algorithm for residual acoustic echo cancellation in hands-free application. The new post-filtering algorithm is composed of AR analysis, pitch prediction, and noise reduction algorithm. The residual acoustic echo is whitened via AR analysis and pitch prediction during no near-end talker period and then is cancelled by noise reduction algorithm. By removing speech characteristics of the residual acoustic echo, noise reduction algorithm reduces the power of the residual acoustic echo as well as the ambient noise. For the hands-free application in the moving car, the proposed system attenuated the interferences more than 15 dB at a constant speed of 80 km/h.
