  • Deflection Routing for Optical Bursts Considering Possibility of Contention at Downstream Nodes

    Deflection routing is one of the promising approaches to resolve contention in the optical burst switching networks. In the conventional deflection routing scheme, optical bursts may be unable to traverse the route evaluated to select an outgoing link because of the contention at succeeding downstream transit nodes. As a result, the optical bursts may traverse a different route resulting in a long distance or decreased performance. This paper proposes a deflection routing scheme that considers the possibility of the contention at downstream nodes. This scheme utilizes the "expected route distance" instead of the static route distance toward a destination node. The expected route distance considers the possibility of contention at each downstream transit node and is calculated using measured link blocking probabilities at each downstream transit node. The selection priority of each outgoing link is given dynamically based on its expected route distance toward a destination node. By considering the possibility of contention at downstream nodes, a routing scheme with high performance can be realized. The loss rate of optical bursts is improved when an imbalanced load is applied to the network, and the loss rate of optical bursts is also improved when the network includes links with extremely different distances.

  • An Audio-Video Multipath Streaming Scheme with Media Synchronization Control: Application-Level QoS Assessment in a Wireless Ad Hoc Network

    This paper proposes the MultiPath streaming scheme with Media Synchronization control (MPMS) for audio-video transmission in wireless ad hoc networks. In many audio-video streaming applications, media compensate each other from a perceptual point of view. On the basis of this property, we treat the two streams as separate transport streams, and then the source transmits them into two different routes if multiple routes to the destination are available. The multipath transmission disturbs the temporal structure of the streams; in MPMS, the disturbance is remedied by media synchronization control. In order to implement MPMS in this paper, we enhance the existing Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol. We compare the application-level QoS of MPMS and three other schemes for audio-video transmission by simulation with ns-2. In the simulation, we also assess the influence of the multipath transmission on other traffic. The simulation result shows that MPMS is effective in achieving high QoS at the application-level.

    Connection of internal scan chains in core wrapper design (CWD) is necessary to handle the width match of TAM and internal scan chains. However, conventional serial connection of internal scan chains incurs power and time penalty. Study shows that the distribution and high density of don't care bits (X-bits) in test patterns make scan slices overlapping and partial overlapping possible. A novel parallel CWD (pCWD) approach is presented in this paper for lowering test power by shortening wrapper scan chains and adjusting test patterns. In order to achieve shift time reduction from overlapping in pCWD, a two-phase process on test pattern: partition and fill, is presented. Experimental results on d695 of ITC2002 benchmark demonstrated the shift time and test power have been decreased by 1.5 and 15 times, respectively. In addition, the proposed pCWD can be used as a stand-alone time reduction technique, which has better performance than previous techniques.

    An Insertion-Deletion system, first introduced in [1], is a theoretical computing model in the DNA computing framework based on insertion and deletion operations. When insertion and deletion operations work together, as expected, they are very powerful. In fact, it has been shown that even the very restricted Insertion-Deletion systems can characterize the class of recursively enumerable languages [1]-[4]. In this paper, we investigate the computational power of Insertion-Deletion systems and show that they preserve the computational universality without using contexts.

  • A New Algorithm for Silhouette Detection in Volume Objects and Its Parallelization

    This paper presents a new algorithm for efficiently detecting silhouette voxels in volume objects. The high performance of the algorithm is partly due to its ability to exclude all the gradient vectors not associated with silhouettes from further consideration. A judicious re-arrangement of the voxels enhances its efficiency. We have studied its performance through computer simulations. The results indicate a manifold improvement over conventional algorithms. A parallel version of the algorithm has also been described in the paper. Its performance is quite understandably impressive.

    A new generation method of rotating electromagnetic fields (rotating-EM fields) for radio frequency (RF) radiated immunity/susceptibility test and its basic characteristics are described. Two different double-side-band suppressed-carrier (DSB-SC) signals are required for generating the slowly rotating-EM field for the immunity/susceptibility test. These DSB-SC signals are generated by a DSB-SC-signal generator based on the new concept which consists of voltage-variable attenuators, bi-phase switches, a direct-digital synthesizer and a micro processor. Using the DSB-SC-signal generator, the DSB-SC signal of arbitrary RF frequency can be generated more easily than the conventional system. In this paper, the principle of the DSB-SC signal generator and the basic characteristics of the DSB-SC signals generated by the generator are clarified. The measured basic characteristics of the rotating-EM field generated using the new concept are shown and it is confirmed that the field can be applied for the RF immunity/susceptibility test. In addition, the susceptibility test of an equipment under test is made as an example, the validity of our proposed system is established.

    Short gap arc V-I characteristics are essential to discussions on behavior of contact arc at opening and closing. From this point of view, some conventional arc V-I characteristics were reviewed and inconvenient points of them for practical use were pointed out: (1) not a few electrode-material-dependent constants needed in the equation of V-I relation, (2) difficulty in the prediction of real arc extinction phenomena. In order to overcome these inconveniences, the author measured short gap arc V-I characteristics originally, and tried to formulate them into a simple form on the assumption that the arc column V-I characteristics are little dependent on electrode materials but the unstable arc region is strongly dependent on electrode materials. Measured arc column voltage was directly proportional to the square root of gap length and inversely proportional to the cube root of arc current. Arc became unstable when arc current decreased near to the value generally known as the minimum arc current. It was not necessarily the case that the arc extinguished completely at the minimum arc current, but, depending on the circuit conditions, the arc often existed discontinuously below the so-called minimum arc current. Simple empirical V-I characteristics were proposed for practical use, together with the unstable arc region as the information for arc extinction phenomena.

    The four-septum transverse electromagnetic (TEM) cell is like the traditional TEM cell but has four plate-like septa in the internal space. A slowly rotating field can be easily generated in the four-septum TEM cell, thus radiated immunity/susceptibility characteristics of an EUT under arbitrary specific polarizations can be measured without rearranging the test setup. A design approach for the four-septum TEM cell is discussed in this paper. The characteristics of the cell are analyzed based on the telegrapher's equation and decomposition of the transmission mode into four independent modes. Then a design approach is given based on the analytical results. A prototype of the four-septum TEM cell based on the design is constructed and the characteristics of the prototype cell are experimentally evaluated. The validity and effectiveness of the design approach are confirmed.

  • A Model of On-line Handwritten Japanese Text Recognition Free from Line Direction and Writing Format Constraints

    This paper presents a model and its effect for on-line handwritten Japanese text recognition free from line-direction constraint and writing format constraint such as character writing boxes or ruled lines. The model evaluates the likelihood composed of character segmentation, character recognition, character pattern structure and context. The likelihood of character pattern structure considers the plausible height, width and inner gaps within a character pattern that appear in Chinese characters composed of multiple radicals (subpatterns). The recognition system incorporating this model separates freely written text into text line elements, estimates the average character size of each element, hypothetically segments it into characters using geometric features, applies character recognition to segmented patterns and employs the model to search the text interpretation that maximizes likelihood as Japanese text. We show the effectiveness of the model through recognition experiments and clarify how the newly modeled factors in the likelihood affect the overall recognition rate.

    It is interesting to resolve coherent signals impinging upon a linear sensor array with low computational complexity in array signal processing. In this paper, a computationally efficient method of signal subspace fitting (SSF) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is developed, based on the multi-stage wiener filter (MSWF). To find the new signal subspace, the proposed method only needs to compute the matched filters in the forward recursion of the MSWF, does not involve the estimate of an array covariance matrix or any eigendecomposition, thus implying that the proposed method is computationally efficient. Numerical results show that the proposed method provides the comparable estimation accuracy with the classical weighted subspace fitting (WSF) method for uncorrelated signals at reasonably high SNR and reasonably large samples, and surpasses the latter for coherent signals in the case of low SNR and small samples. When SNR is low and the samples are small, the proposed method is less accurate than the classical WSF method for uncorrelated signals. This drawback is balanced by the computational advantage of the proposed method.

    Wireless Internet technologies have been developing and users are now able to access more information anywhere through small screen mobile devices. However, due to the limits of cost, bandwidth and screen size in a wireless environment, it is important to minimize interactions between a mobile user and his handheld device, as well as the amount of data transmitted. In this paper we present an interactive evolutionary approach for user-oriented Web search by using mobile devices. To verify this approach, a series of experiments has been conducted. The results show that our approach can allocate the information a user needs within only a few user-system interactions. It substantially reduces the number of retrieved pages a user has to visit. This is especially an important benefit to mobile users.

    This paper incorporates statistical language models into an on-line handwriting recognition system for devices with limited memory and computational resources. The objective is to minimize the error recognition rate by taking into account the sentence context to disambiguate poorly written texts. Probabilistic word n-grams have been first investigated, then to fight the curse of dimensionality problem induced by such an approach and to decrease significantly the size of the language model an extension to class-based n-grams has been achieved. In the latter case, the classes result either from a syntactic criterion or a contextual criteria. Finally, a composite model is proposed; it combines both previous kinds of classes and exhibits superior performances compared with the word n-grams model. We report on many experiments involving different European languages (English, French, and Italian), they are related either to language model evaluation based on the classical perplexity measurement on test text corpora but also on the evolution of the word error rate on test handwritten databases. These experiments show that the proposed approach significantly improves on state-of-the-art n-gram models, and that its integration into an on-line handwriting recognition system demonstrates a substantial performance improvement.

    This paper describes a distributed video transcoding system that can simultaneously transcode an MPEG-2 video file into various video coding formats with different rates. The transcoder divides the MPEG-2 file into small segments along the time axis and transcodes them in parallel. Efficient video segment handling methods are proposed that minimize the inter-processor communication overhead and eliminate temporal discontinuities from the re-encoded video. We investigate how segment transcoding should be distributed to obtain the shortest total transcoding time. Experimental results show that implementing distributed transcoding on 10 PCs can decrease the total transcoding time by a factor of about 7 for single transcoding and by a factor of 9.5 for simultaneous three kinds of transcoding rates.

    The demand for intra- and interdomain routing for multilayered networks such as those using generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) is strong. One of the features that is peculiar to GMPLS networks is that because several different domains, such as those of IP, ATM, and optical fiber, are combined with each other hierarchically, various routing policies, which are sometimes independent from underlying domains and sometimes taking the underlying domains' policies into consideration, are required. For example GMPLS's lower layer LSPs like lambda LSP are expected to be established independently before the upper-layer LSPs, like IP and MPLS LSPs, are established in the underlying domains. Another requirement for the GMPLS interdomain routing is lightening the burden for selecting the interdomain route, because there are a lot of demands to interconnect many GMPLS domains. In order to satisfy these demands, we propose a path computation server (PCS) that is special for the intra/interdomain routing of GMPLS networks. As a counterpart of the proposed interdomain routing, it is now becoming popular to apply OSPF to the GMPLS interdomain routing. Therefore, we compared the proposed interdomain routing with OSPF, and show the applicability of the routing to GMPLS networks.

    This paper describes an on-line handwritten Japanese text recognition system that is liberated from constraints on line direction and character orientation. The recognition system first separates freely written text into text line elements, second estimates the line direction and character orientation using the time sequence information of pen-tip coordinates, third hypothetically segment it into characters using geometric features and apply character recognition. The final step is to select the most plausible interpretation by evaluating the likelihood composed of character segmentation, character recognition, character pattern structure and context. The method can cope with a mixture of vertical, horizontal and skewed text lines with arbitrary character orientations. It is expected useful for tablet PC's, interactive electronic whiteboards and so on.

    This paper proposes two power-constrained test synthesis schemes and scheduling algorithms, under non-scan BIST, for RTL data paths. The first scheme uses boundary non-scan BIST, and can achieve low hardware overheads. The second scheme uses generic non-scan BIST, and can offer some tradeoffs between hardware overhead, test application time and power dissipation. A designer can easily select an appropriate design parameter based on the desired tradeoff. Experimental results confirm the good performance and practicality of our new approaches.

    Based on the Si CMOS process, a low operating voltage and low power light emitting device is presented. It has a power transfer efficiency of 1 to 2 orders higher than previous reports and can be used as a high efficiency photodiode. Configurations using the same structure as both the light emitter and the optical receiver, and employing a simple modulation instrument is then proposed for applications in the chip-to-chip optical alignment and the signal transmission. Only single power supply is required in the emitter-receiver circuits and is compatible with other integrated circuits made by the CMOS process.

    While mobile networks have been enhanced to support a variety of mobile multimedia services such as video telephony and rich data content delivery, a new challenge is being created by the remarkable development of micro-device technologies such as micro processor-chips, sensors, and RF tags. These developments suggest the rapid emergence of the ubiquitous computing environment; computers supporting human life without imposing any stress on the users. The combination of broadband global networks and ubiquitous computing environment will lead to an entirely new class of services, which we call ubiquitous networking services. This paper discusses how to create ubiquitous service environments comparing global networking approaches which are based on fixed and mobile networks. It is shown that the mobile approach is better from service applicability and reliability viewpoints. Networking architecture is proposed which expand 4G mobile cellular networks to real space via gateways on the edges of the mobile network (i.e. mobile terminals). A new set of technical requirements will emerge via this approach, which may accelerate the paradigm shift from the current mobile network architecture and even from the Internet of today.

    One of the main issues of Mobile IPv6 is handover latency that causes service disruption time. Although plenty of proposals significantly reduce the service disruption time, they suffer from redundant routing that causes packet misordering and bandwidth consumption during the process of inter-domain handover. In this paper, we propose a new scheme that minimizes the redundant routing during the process of inter-domain handover by utilizing forwarding routers for each correspondent node. Our proposed scheme consists of forwarding router discovery and proactive handover. We evaluate our proposed scheme in the view of packet misordering and bandwidth consumption, and clarify the efficiency of our proposed scheme. We also evaluate the impact of the forwarding routers' capacity since routers have limited resources. By strategically locating forwarding routers, e.g. next to the router that has peering to another domain, the redundant routing caused by inter-domain handover will be efficiently suppressed.
