    We investigated effects of ultraviolet illuminance and ratio of high- to low-refractive-index monomers on the layer structure and light diffusion properties of light-diffusing films with alternating polymer layer structures. We clarified that an increasing difference in refractive index between alternating polymer layers induced an increase in the diffusion angle.

    Kernel discriminant analysis (KDA) is the mainstream approach of nonlinear discriminant analysis (NDA). Since it uses the kernel trick, KDA does not consider its nonlinear discriminant mapping explicitly. In this paper, another NDA approach where the nonlinear discriminant mapping is analytically given is developed. This study is based on the theory of optimal nonlinear discriminant analysis (ONDA) of which the nonlinear mapping is exactly expressed by using the Bayesian posterior probability. This theory indicates that various NDA can be derived by estimating the Bayesian posterior probability in ONDA with various estimation methods. Also, ONDA brings an insight about novel kernel functions, called discriminant kernel (DK), which is defined by also using the posterior probabilities. In this paper, several NDA and DK derived from ONDA with several posterior probability estimators are developed and evaluated. Given fine estimation methods of the Bayesian posterior probability, they give good discriminant spaces for visualization or classification.

    In order to realize high-yield speckle modulation, we developed a novel spatial light modulator using zinc oxide single crystal doped with nitrogen ions. The distribution of dopants was optimized to induce characteristic optical functions by applying an annealing method developed by us. The device is driven by a current in the in-plane direction, which induces magnetic fields. These fields strongly interact with the doped material, and the spatial distribution of the refractive index is correspondingly modulated via external control. Using this device, we experimentally demonstrated speckle modulation, and we discuss the quantitative superiority of our approach.

    A black mask (BM) is a layer used to improve the display quality by suppressing light leakage. In general, the BM is formed by a photolithography process. In this study, a novel technique for the fabrication of a quasi-black mask (q-BM) is proposed; the q-BM was composed of vertical and hybrid orientation areas, patterned by a separation coating technique using an electro-spray deposition method. Using our technique, the q-BM can be formed easily without the additional masks used for the BM.

    Sound localization systems are widely studied and have several potential applications, including hearing aid devices, surveillance and robotics. However, few proposed solutions target portable systems, such as wearable devices, which require a small unnoticeable platform, or unmanned aerial vehicles, in which weight and low power consumption are critical aspects. The main objective of this research is to achieve real-time sound localization capability in a small, self-contained device, without having to rely on large shaped platforms or complex microphone arrays. The proposed device has two surface-mount microphones spaced only 20 mm apart. Such reduced dimensions present challenges for the implementation, as differences in level and spectra become negligible, and only time-difference of arrival (TDoA) can be used as a localization cue. Three main issues have to be addressed in order to accomplish these objectives. To achieve real-time processing, the TDoA is calculated using zero-crossing spikes applied to the hardware-friendly Jeffers model. In order to make up for the reduction in resolution due to the small dimensions, the signal is upsampled several-fold within the system. Finally, a coherence-based spectral masking is used to select only frequency components with relevant TDoA information. The proposed system was implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based platform, due to the large amount of concurrent and independent tasks, which can be efficiently parallelized in reconfigurable hardware devices. Experimental results with white-noise and environmental sounds show high accuracies for both anechoic and reverberant conditions.

    Network intelligence is a discipline that builds on the capabilities of network systems to act intelligently by the usage of network resources for delivering high-quality services in a changing environment. Wide area network intelligence is a class of network intelligence in wide area network which covers the core and the edge of Internet. In this paper, we propose a system based on machine learning for wide area network intelligence. The whole system consists of a core machine for pre-training and many terminal machines to accomplish faster responses. Each machine is one of dual-hemisphere models which are made of left and right hemispheres. The left hemisphere is used to improve latency by terminal response and the right hemisphere is used to improve communication by data generation. In an application on multimedia service, the proposed model is superior to the latest deep feed forward neural network in the data center with respect to the accuracy, latency and communication. Evaluation shows scalable improvement with regard to the number of terminal machines. Evaluation also shows the cost of improvement is longer learning time.

    In this paper, we propose and analyze the opportunistic amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying scheme using antenna selection in conjunction with different adaptive transmission techniques over Rayleigh fading channels. In this scheme, the best antenna of a source and the best relay are selected for communication between the source and destination. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability and average symbol error rate (SER) are derived to confirm that increasing the number of antennas is the best option as compared with increasing the number of relays. We also obtain closed-form expressions for the average channel capacity under three different adaptive transmission techniques: 1) optimal power and rate adaptation; 2) constant power with optimal rate adaptation; and 3) channel inversion with a fixed rate. The channel capacity performance of the considered adaptive transmission techniques is evaluated and compared with a different number of relays and various antennas configurations for each adaptive technique. Our derived analytical results are verified through extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

    In this paper, a new MIMO antenna for ultra-wide band (UWB) applications is designed and proposed. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of two single UWB antenna elements, one acts as a magnetic dipole while the other as an electric one, to reduce mutual coupling. In order to reduce further the mutual coupling, a copper stub is used to isolate the two antenna elements. The designed MIMO UWB antenna provides a broad operating bandwidth from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz, while achieving low mutual coupling and VSWR ≤ 2. Various performance characteristics of the antenna such as radiation patterns, VSWR, and the maximal gain are thoroughly investigated by simulations and experiments.

    This paper proposes a technique for efficient standing multipath mitigation of geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellites. The performance of traditional filtering methods for GEO multipath errors can be effectively improved by using carrier frequency variation approach. Conventional multipath mitigation methods do not pay much attention to the GEO satellite multipath effects, and they are less effective due to the non-zero average characteristics of GEO multipath errors for short epochs. By varying carrier frequency, the multipath error average becomes approaching zero in short epochs due to the faster multipath carrier phase variation. Therefore, it could enhance the traditional filtering method performance on the multipath signals. By varying the carrier frequency or the carrier phase offset, the average multipath error will approach zero as a result of the frequent multipath carrier phase variations. This method aims to explore the potential for signal pattern design while improving the performance of current satellite navigation systems. The results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) for pseudo-range multipath errors of the proposed approach improves about 0.3m with a frequency variation range of 15MHz.

    The Android pattern unlock is a popular graphical password scheme, where a user is presented a 3×3 grid and required to draw a pattern on the onscreen grid. Each pattern is a sequence of at least four contact points with some restrictions. Theoretically, the security level of unlock patterns is determined by the size of the pattern space. However, the number of possible patterns is only known for 3×3 and 4×4 grids, which was computed by brute-force enumeration. The only mathematical formula for the number of possible patterns is a permutation-based upper bound. In this article, we present an improved upper bound by counting the number of “visible” points that can be directly reached by a point.

    This paper proposes a multiband automatic tunable antenna system for wide frequency bands of 704-2690MHz for cellular wireless communication systems. The proposed system controls variable capacitors connected between the antenna and a transmitter based on the received power of a probe. Locating the probe near the tip of the antenna enables frequency-a operation. The antenna is a multiband two-arm monopole antenna printed on a 60mm × 10mm area of a 60mm × 100mm FR-4 printed circuit board (PCB). The probe is a small dipole antenna capacitively coupled with the antenna. Fine-tuning based on simple hill-climbing optimization compensates the mismatch due to the surroundings, e.g., a user's hand/head or desk assuming channel-informed rough-tuning beforehand. A prototype consisting of varicap diodes and some other devices demonstrates automatic tunability.

  • Misalignment Tolerance of Pluggable Ballpoint-Pen Interconnect of Graded-Index Plastic Optical Fiber for 4K/8K UHD Display Open Access

    We investigate the influence of launching conditions on misalignment tolerance of pluggable ballpoint-pen interconnects, where graded-index plastic optical fibers (GI POFs) are coupled with ball lenses mounted on their end faces. The lateral-misalignment tolerance of the ballpoint-pen connector decreased with an increase in the driving current of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) under the center launching condition. This was attributed to the VCSEL multimode oscillation, which increased the connector coupling loss through the higher-order guided mode launching in the GI POF and the resulting output beam expansion in the ballpoint-pen connector. The driving-current dependence of the connector coupling loss could be decreased using offset launchings. For a radial launching offset of 20µm, we could obtain coupling losses below 1dB for lateral coupling offsets of ±50µm with little dependence on the driving current. This suggests that data transmission quality for misaligned connection of the GI POFs can be improved further by optimizing launching systems for the ballpoint-pen interconnects.

    In this letter, we propose a novel discriminative representation for patterned fabric defect inspection when only limited negative samples are available. Fisher criterion is introduced into the loss function of deep learning, which can guide the learning direction of deep networks and make the extracted features more discriminating. A deep neural network constructed from the encoder part of trained autoencoders is utilized to classify each pixel in the images into defective or defectless categories, using as context a patch centered on the pixel. Sequentially the confidence map is processed by median filtering and binary thresholding, and then the defect areas are located. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the benchmark fabric images.

  • Improvements of Voice Timbre Control Based on Perceived Age in Singing Voice Conversion

    As one of the techniques enabling individual singers to produce the varieties of voice timbre beyond their own physical constraints, a statistical voice timbre control technique based on the perceived age has been developed. In this technique, the perceived age of a singing voice, which is the age of the singer as perceived by the listener, is used as one of the intuitively understandable measures to describe voice characteristics of the singing voice. The use of statistical voice conversion (SVC) with a singer-dependent multiple-regression Gaussian mixture model (MR-GMM), which effectively models the voice timbre variations caused by a change of the perceived age, makes it possible for individual singers to manipulate the perceived ages of their own singing voices while retaining their own singer identities. However, there still remain several issues; e.g., 1) a controllable range of the perceived age is limited; 2) quality of the converted singing voice is significantly degraded compared to that of a natural singing voice; and 3) each singer needs to sing the same phrase set as sung by a reference singer to develop the singer-dependent MR-GMM. To address these issues, we propose the following three methods; 1) a method using gender-dependent modeling to expand the controllable range of the perceived age; 2) a method using direct waveform modification based on spectrum differential to improve quality of the converted singing voice; and 3) a rapid unsupervised adaptation method based on maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation to easily develop the singer-dependent MR-GMM. The experimental results show that the proposed methods achieve a wider controllable range of the perceived age, a significant quality improvement of the converted singing voice, and the development of the singer-dependnet MR-GMM using only a few arbitrary phrases as adaptation data.

  • Address Power Reduction Method for High-Resolution Plasma Display Panels Using Address Data Smoothing Based on a Visual Masking Effect

    This paper proposes an address power reduction method for plasma display panels (PDPs) using subfield data smoothing based on a visual masking effect. High-resolution, high-frame-rate PDPs have large address power loss caused by parasitic capacitance. Although the address power is reduced by smoothing the subfield data, noise is generated. The proposed method reduces the address power while maintaining the image quality by choosing the smoothing area of the address data based on the visual masking effect. The results of subjective assessment for the images based on smoothed address data indicate that image quality is maintained.

    This letter proposes an Index based on Irregular Partition of data identifiers (IIP), to enable clients to quickly access multiple data items on a wireless broadcast channel. IIP improves the access time by reducing the index waiting time when clients access multiple data items, through the use of irregular partitioning of the identifier space of data items. Our performance evaluation shows that with respect to access time, the proposed IIP outperforms the existing index schemes supporting multiple data access.

    A modularized, low-cost, and non-invasive electrochemical examination platform is proposed in this work. Melatonin has been found to be a possible significant indicator molecule in the detection of breast cancer. 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid and nuclear matrix protein 22 can be used as a significant index for potential bladder cancer risks. The proposed system was verified by measuring the melatonin, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid and nuclear matrix protein 22. Cyclic voltammetry and molecularly imprinted polymers were used in the experiments. Screen-printed electrodes were coated with a film imprinted with target molecules. The measurement results of the proposed system were compared with those of a commercial potentiostat. The two sets of results were very similar. Moreover, the proposed system can be expanded to a four-channel system, which can perform four measurements simultaneously. The proposed system also provides convenient graphical user interface for real-time monitoring and records the information of the redox reactions.

    In this work, a novel formulation of crosstalk (XT) is developed, in which the perturbation/loading effect that the generator circuit exerts on the passive part of the receptor circuit is elucidated. Practical conditions (i.e., weak coupling and matching/mismatching of the generator circuit) under which this effect can be neglected are then discussed and exploited to develop an alternative radiated susceptibility (RS) test procedure, which resorts to crosstalk to induce at the terminations of a cable harness the same disturbance that would be induced by an external uniform plane-wave field. The proposed procedure, here developed with reference to typical RS setups foreseen by Standards of the aerospace sector, assures equivalence with field coupling without a priori knowledge and/or specific assumptions on the units connected to the terminations of the cable harness. Accuracy of the proposed scheme of equivalence is assessed by virtual experiments carried out in a full-wave simulation environment.

    To efficiently utilize storage resources, the in-network caching system of Information-Centric Networking has to deal with the popularity of huge content chunks which could cause large memory consumption. This paper presents a Popularity Monitoring based Gain-aware caching scheme, called PMG, which is an integrated design of cache placement and popularity monitoring. In PMG, by taking into account both the chunk popularity and the consumption saving of single cache hit, the cache placement process is transformed into a weighted popularity comparison, while the chunks with high cache gain are placed on the node closer to the content consumer. A Bloom Filter based sliding window algorithm, which is self-adaptive to the dynamic request rate, is proposed to capture the chunks with higher caching gain by Inter-Reference Gap (IRG) detection. Analysis shows that PMG can drastically reduce the memory consumption of popularity monitoring, and the simulation results confirm that our scheme can achieve popularity based cache placement and get better performance in terms of bandwidth saving and cache hit ratio when content popularity changes dynamically.
