  • Design of Microwave Patch Hybrid Couplers with Arbitrary Power Ratio and Impedance Transformation

    A miniaturized patch hybrid coupler with arbitrary power ratio and impedance transformation is proposed and designed by loading a pair of asymmetric cross slots on a squared patch resonator. To obtain the arbitrary power ratio and impedance transformation, the rectangular size of stepped slot ends should be well designed to be asymmetry and thus to obtain the different inductive loadings along two current paths. Theoretically, the equivalent transmission line model is first developed to understand the physical relationship between the patch and traditional branch-line hybrids. The matching/isolation and power ratio conditions are then derived at center frequency. By following a detailed design guideline, a prototype of the hybrid with 1:2 power ratio and 1:1.3 impedance transformation is designed and fabricated at 4.2 GHz. The measured results show a good agreement with simulated results, where the measured -10 dB impedance bandwidth achieves 18% and the bandwidth of 90°±6° phase difference is about 35% in a frequency range from 3.5 GHz to 5 GHz.

    A digital spatial modulation method has been demonstrated for a wireless power transmission system at 5.8 GHz. Interference of electromagnetic waves, which are radiated from the dual scatterers, successfully realizes the spatial modulation. The spatial modulation is performed with a digital modulation manner by controlling capacitances embedded in one of the dual scatterers so that the interference of the scattered waves is appropriately changed. Switch MMICs based on p-HEMT technology was newly developed for the spatial modulation. Measured insertion losses of the switch MMIC are 1.0 dB and 14 dB for on and off states at 5.8 GHz, respectively. The isolation is more than 20 dB. With the switch MMIC, digital spatial modulation characteristics were experimentally demonstrated at 5.8 GHz. One-bit amplitude shift keying (ASK) for 1 MHz signal was realized at 5.8 GHz, and two levels were clearly discriminated. The modulation factor is 36%. In addition, 2-bit ASK signal was detected at 7.1 GHz.

    In wireless sensor networks, or WSNs, a malicious node is able to cover itself by switching between good and bad behaviors. Even when running under a reputation mechanism, such a node can still behave maliciously now and then so long as its reputation is within the acceptable level. To address this inconsistent behavior issue, a combined approach of statistic reputation and time series is proposed in this study, in which the negative binomial reputation is applied to rate the nodes' reputation and concept of time series is borrowed to analyze the reputation results. Simulations show that the proposed method can effectively counter inconsistent behavior nodes and thus improves the overall system performance.

    PD-SOI (Partial Depleted Silicon On Insulator) process is a good candidate technology for space system designs, since it features excellent insulation to the silicon substrate compared to the conventional bulk CMOS process. However, the radioactive particles from the low earth orbit can causes single event transient (SET) or abrupt charge collection in a circuit node, leading to a logical error in space systems. Also, the side effects such as the history effect and the kink effect in PD-SOI technology cause the threshold voltage variation, degrading the circuit performance. We propose SET-tolerant PD-SOI CMOS logic circuits using a novel active body-bias scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed circuits are more effective to SET and the side effects as well.

  • Development of Wireless Systems for Disaster Recovery Operations Open Access

    This paper presents wireless systems for use in disaster recovery operations. The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011 reinforced the importance of communications in, to, and between disaster areas as lifelines. It also revealed that conventional wireless systems used for disaster recovery need to be renovated to cope with technological changes and to provide their services with easier operations. To address this need we have developed new systems, which include a relay wireless system, subscriber wireless systems, business radio systems, and satellite communication systems. They will be chosen and used depending on the situations in disaster areas as well as on the required services.

    For the electric demand prediction problem, a modification mechanism of predicted demand data has been proposed in the previous work. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the modification mechanism in power balancing control. Then, we analytically derive an upper bound of the performance, which is characterized by system parameters and prediction precision.

    Adherence to coding conventions during the code production stage of software development is essential. Benefits include enabling programmers to quickly understand the context of shared code, communicate with one another in a consistent manner, and easily maintain the source code at low costs. In reality, however, programmers tend to doubt or ignore the degree to which the quality of their code is affected by adherence to these guidelines. This paper addresses research questions such as “Do violations of coding conventions affect the readability of the produced code?”, “What kinds of coding violations reduce code readability?”, and “How much do variable factors such as developer experience, project size, team size, and project maturity influence coding violations?” To respond to these research questions, we explored 210 open-source Java projects with 117 coding conventions from the Sun standard checklist. We believe our findings and the analysis approach used in the paper will encourage programmers and QA managers to develop their own customized and effective coding style guidelines.

    In this paper, for an odd prime p and i=0,1, we investigate the cross-correlation between two decimated sequences, s(2t+i) and s(dt), where s(t) is a p-ary m-sequence of period pn-1. Here we consider two cases of ${d}$, ${d= rac{(p^m +1)^2}{2} }$ with ${n=2m}$, ${p^m equiv 1 pmod{4}}$ and ${d= rac{(p^m +1)^2}{p^e + 1}}$ with n=2m and odd m/e. The value distribution of the cross-correlation function for each case is completely determined. Also, by using these decimated sequences, two new p-ary sequence families of period ${ rac{p^n -1}{2}}$ with good correlation property are constructed.

    A power allocation to active and reactive power in stochastic resonance is discussed for energy harvesting from noise. It is confirmed that active power can be increased at stochastic resonance, in the same way of the relationship between energy and phase at an appropriate setting in resonance.

    A new approach to reconstructing antenna far-field patterns from the missing part of the pattern is presented in this paper. The antenna far-field pattern can be reconstructed by utilizing the iterative Hilbert transform, which is based on the relationship between the real and imaginary part of the Hilbert transform. A moving average filter is used to reduce the errors in the restored signal as well as the computation load. Under the constraint of the causality of the current source in space, we could successfully reconstruct the data. Several examples dealing with line source antennas and antenna arrays are simulated to illustrate the applicability of this approach.

  • Multi-Task Object Tracking with Feature Selection

    In this paper, we propose an efficient tracking method that is formulated as a multi-task reverse sparse representation problem. The proposed method learns the representation of all tasks jointly using a customized APG method within several iterations. In order to reduce the computational complexity, the proposed tracking algorithm starts from a feature selection scheme that chooses suitable number of features from the object and background in the dynamic environment. Based on the selected feature, multiple templates are constructed with a few candidates. The candidate that corresponds to the highest similarity to the object templates is considered as the final tracking result. In addition, we present a template update scheme to capture the appearance changes of the object. At the same time, we keep several earlier templates in the positive template set unchanged to alleviate the drifting problem. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate that the proposed tracking algorithm performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods.

  • Construction of an ROBDD for a PB-Constraint in Band Form and Related Techniques for PB-Solvers

    Pseudo-Boolean (PB) problems are Integer Linear Problem restricted to 0-1 variables. This paper discusses on acceleration techniques of PB-solvers that employ SAT-solving of combined CNFs each of which is produced from each PB-constraint via a binary decision diagram (BDD). Specifically, we show (i) an efficient construction of a reduced ordered BDD (ROBDD) from a constraint in band form l ≤ ≤ h, (ii) a CNF coding that produces two clauses for some nodes in an ROBDD obtained by (i), and (iii) an incremental SAT-solving of the binary/alternative search for minimizing values of a given goal function. We implemented the proposed constructions and report on experimental results.

    This paper presents the effect of transmit diversity on the initial and neighboring cell search time performance and the most appropriate transmit diversity scheme based on system-level simulations employing synchronization signals for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) downlink. The synchronization signals including the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and secondary synchronization signal (SSS) are the first physical channel that a set of user equipment (UE) acquires at the initial radio-link connection. The transmit diversity candidates assumed in the paper are Precoding Vector Switching (PVS), Cyclic Delay Diversity (CDD), Time Switched Transmit Diversity (TSTD), and Frequency Switched Transmit Diversity (FSTD), which are all suitable for simple blind detection at a UE. System-level simulation results show that transmit diversity is effective in improving the detection probabilities of the received PSS timing and PSS sequence in the first step and those of the SSS sequence and radio frame timing in the second step of the cell search process. We also show that PVS achieves fast cell search time performance of less than approximately 20ms at the location probability of 90% regardless of the inter-cell site distance up to 10km. Hence, we conclude that PVS is the best transmit diversity scheme for the synchronization signals from the viewpoint of decreasing the initial and neighboring cell search times.

    In Xu, Chen, and Liu's letter, two constructions producing perfect 8-QAM+/8-QAM sequences were given. We show that their constructions are equivalent to Zeng, et al.'s constructions under unit constant transform. Since the autocorrelation of a perfect sequence under unit constant transform is invariable, Xu, et al.'s constructions are the special case of Zeng, et al.'s constructions.

    We present a matching method for 3D CAD assembly models consisting of multiple components. Here we need to distinguish the layouts and the materials of the components in addition to their shapes. A set of the feature quantities of an assembly model is extracted using projections from various angles. We show the effectiveness of our method experimentally for 3D CAD assembly models.

    Verification of a design with respect to its requirement specification is important to prevent errors before constructing an actual implementation. The existing works focus on verifications where the specifications are described using temporal logics or using the same languages as that used to describe the designs. Our work considers cases where the specifications and the designs are described using different languages. To verify such cases, we propose a framework to check if a design conforms to its specification based on their simulation relation. Specifically, we define the semantics of the specifications and the designs commonly as labelled transition systems (LTSs). We appreciate LTSs since they could interpret information about the system and actions that the system may perform as well as the effect of these actions. Then, we check whether a design conforms to its specification based on the simulation relation of their LTS. In this paper, we present our framework for the verification of reactive systems, and we present the case where the specifications and the designs are described in Event-B and Promela/Spin, respectively. We also present two case studies with the results of several experiments to illustrate the applicability of our framework on practical systems.

  • A Participating Fine-Grained Cloud Computing Platform with In-Network Guidance

    What should be the ultimate form of the cloud computing environment? The solution should have two important features; “Fine-Granularity” and “Participation.” To realize an attractive and feasible solution with these features, we propose a “participating fine-grained cloud computing platform” that a large number of personal or small-company resource suppliers participate in, configure and provide cloud computing on. This enables users to be supplied with smaller units of resources such as computing, memory, content, and applications, in comparison with the traditional Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). Furthermore, to search for nearby resources efficiently among the many available on the platform, we also propose Resource Breadcrumbs (RBC) as a key technology of our proposed platform to provide in-network guidance capability autonomously for users' queries. RBC allows supplier-nodes to distribute guidance information directed to themselves with dedicated control messages; in addition, the information can be logged along the trail of message from supplier to user. With this distributed information, users can to autonomously locate nearby resources. Distributed management also reduces computational load on the central database and enables a participating fine-grained cloud platform at lower cost.
