  • The CS-Based Imaging Algorithm for Near-Field Synthetic Aperture Imaging Radiometer

    Millimeter-wave synthetic aperture imaging radiometer (SAIR) is a powerful sensor for near-field high-resolution observations. However, the large receiver number and system complexity affect the application of SAIR. To overcome this shortage (receiver number), an accurate imaging algorithm based on compressed sensing (CS) theory is proposed in this paper. For reconstructing the brightness temperature images accurately from the sparse SAIR with fewer receivers, the proposed CS-based imaging algorithm is used to accomplish the sparse reconstruction with fewer visibility samples. The reconstruction is performed by minimizing the $l_{1}$ norm of the transformed image. Compared to the FFT-based methods based on Fourier transform, the required receiver number can be further reduced by this method. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CS-based method has higher reconstruction accuracy for the sparse SAIR.

  • Preventing Participation of Insincere Workers in Crowdsourcing by Using Pay-for-Performance Payments

    We propose a method for finding an appropriate setting of a pay-per-performance payment system to prevent participation of insincere workers in crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing enables fast and low-cost accomplishment of tasks; however, insincere workers prevent the task requester from obtaining high-quality results. Instead of a fixed payment system, the pay-per-performance payment system is promising for excluding insincere workers. However, it is difficult to learn what settings are better, and a naive payment setting may cause unsatisfactory outcomes. To overcome these drawbacks, we propose a method for calculating the expected payments for sincere and insincere workers, and then clarifying the conditions in the payment setting in which sincere workers are willing to choose a task, while insincere workers are not willing to choose the task. We evaluated the proposed method by conducting several experiments on tweet labeling tasks in Amazon Mechanical Turk. The results suggest that the pay-per-performance system is useful for preventing participation of insincere workers.

    Energy harvesting technology was introduced into wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to solve the problem of the short lifetimes of sensor nodes. The technology gives sensor nodes the ability to convert environmental energy into electricity. Sufficient electrical energy can lengthen the lifetime and improve the quality of service of a WSN. This paper proposes a novel use of mutual information to evaluate data transmission behavior in the energy harvesting WSNs. Data at a sink for a node deteriorates over time until the next periodic transmission from the node is received. In this paper, we suggest an optimized intermittent transmission method for WSNs that harvest energy. Our method overcomes the problem of information deterioration without increasing energy cost. We show that by using spatial correlation between different sensor nodes, our proposed method can mitigate information deterioration significantly at the sink.

    In this paper, we consider multi-source multi-relay power allocation in cooperative wireless networks. A new intelligent optimization algorithm, multi-objective free search (MOFS), is proposed to efficiently allocate cooperative relay power to better support multiple sources transmission. The existence of Pareto optimal solutions is analyzed for the proposed multi-objective power allocation model when the objectives conflict with each other, and the MOFS algorithm is validated using several test functions and metrics taken from the standard literature on evolutionary multi-objective optimization. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can effectively get the potential optimal solutions of multi-objective power allocation problem, and it can effectively optimize the tradeoff between network sum-rate and fairness in different applications by selection of the corresponding solution.

  • Hilbert Transform Based Time-of-Flight Estimation of Multi-Echo Ultrasonic Signals and Its Resolution Analysis

    In non-destructive testing (NDT), ultrasonic echo is often an overlapping multi-echo signals with noise. However, the accurate estimation of ultrasonic time-of-flight (TOF) is essential in NDT. In this letter, a novel method for TOF estimation through envelope is proposed. Firstly, the wavelet denoising technique is applied to the noisy echo to improve the estimation accuracy. Then, the Hilbert transform (HT) is used in ultrasonic signal processing in order to extract the envelope of the echo. Finally, the TOF of each component of multi-echo signals is estimated by the local maximum point of signal envelope. Furthermore, the time resolution of time-overlapping ultrasonic echoes is discussed. Numerical simulation has been carried out to show the performances of the proposed method in estimating TOF of ultrasonic signal.

  • Hierarchical Categorization of Open Source Software by Online Profiles

    The large amounts of freely available open source software over the Internet are fundamentally changing the traditional paradigms of software development. Efficient categorization of the massive projects for retrieving relevant software is of vital importance for Internet-based software development such as solution searching, best practices learning and so on. Many previous works have been conducted on software categorization by mining source code or byte code, but were verified on only relatively small collections of projects with coarse-grained categories or clusters. However, Internet-based software development requires finer-grained, more scalable and language-independent categorization approaches. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to hierarchically categorize software projects based on their online profiles. We design a SVM-based categorization framework and adopt a weighted combination strategy to aggregate different types of profile attributes from multiple repositories. Different basic classification algorithms and feature selection techniques are employed and compared. Extensive experiments are carried out on more than 21,000 projects across five repositories. The results show that our approach achieves significant improvements by using weighted combination. Compared to the previous work, our approach presents competitive results with more finer-grained and multi-layered category hierarchy with more than 120 categories. Unlike approaches that use source code or byte code, our approach is more effective for large-scale and language-independent software categorization. In addition, experiments suggest that hierarchical categorization combined with general keyword-based searching improves the retrieval efficiency and accuracy.

    This paper presents a novel filter to keep from over-smoothing the edges and corners and rectify the outliers in the flow field after each incremental computation step, which plays a key role during the process of estimating flow field. This filter works according to the spatial-temporal derivatives distance of the input image and velocity field distance, whose principle is more reasonable in filtering mechanism for optical flow than other existing nonlinear filters. Moreover, we regard the spatial-temporal derivatives as new powerful descriptions of different motion layers or regions and give a detailed explanation. Experimental results show that our proposed method achieves better performance.

    In this paper, a new analog signal transmission technique called analog single-carrier transmission with frequency-domain equalization (analog SC-FDE) is proposed. Analog SC-FDE applies discrete Fourier transform (DFT), frequency-domain spectrum shaping and mapping, inverse DFT (IDFT), and cyclic prefix (CP) insertion before transmission. At the receiver, one-tap FDE is applied to take advantage of frequency diversity. This paper considers, as an example, analog voice transmission. A theoretical analysis of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) performance is carried out to evaluate the transmission property of the proposed analog SC-FDE and is confirmed by computer simulation. We show that analog SC-FDE achieves better NMSE performance than conventional analog signal transmission scheme.

    The required packaging density has increased and it would be difficult to employ the conventional assembly technique to produce optical circuit boards with multi-fiber connectors. So we designed an MTPIPE (MT ferrules with Pre-Installed Pre-polished End fibers) connector that can be assembling easily and that does not need a polishing process. It is suitable for use with optical circuit boards and compatible with MT or MPO connectors. We propose MTPIPE which allows us to assemble optical fiber circuit boards easily, reliably and at low cost.

    In this paper, we propose a novel approach for multiple-shot people re-identification. Due to high variance in camera view, light illumination, non-rigid deformation of posture and so on, there exists a crucial inter-/intra- variance issue, i.e., the same people may look considerably different, whereas different people may look extremely similar. This issue leads to an intractable, multimodal distribution of people appearance in feature space. To deal with such multimodal properties of data, we solve the re-identification problem under a local distance comparison framework, which significantly alleviates the difficulty induced by varying appearance of each individual. Furthermore, we build an energy-based loss function to measure the similarity between appearance instances, by calculating the distance between corresponding subsets in feature space. This loss function not only favors small distances that indicate high similarity between appearances of the same people, but also penalizes small distances or undesirable overlaps between subsets, which reflect high similarity between appearances of different people. In this way, effective people re-identification can be achieved in a robust manner against the inter-/intra- variance issue. The performance of our approach has been evaluated by applying it to the public benchmark datasets ETHZ and CAVIAR4REID. Experimental results show significant improvements over previous reports.

    The aim of this study is to present electrooculogram signals that can be used for human computer interface efficiently. Establishing an efficient alternative channel for communication without overt speech and hand movements is important to increase the quality of life for patients suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or other illnesses that prevent correct limb and facial muscular responses. In this paper, we introduce the gaze estimation system of electrooculogram signals. Using this system, the electrooculogram signals can be recorded when the patients focused on each direct. All these recorded signals could be analyzed using math-method and the mathematical model will be set up. Gaze estimation can be recognized using electrooculogram signals follow these models.

  • Identifying Program Loop Nesting Structures during Execution of Machine Code

    This paper presents a mechanism for detecting dynamic loop and procedure nesting during the actual program execution on-the-fly. This mechanism aims primarily at making better strategies for performance tuning or parallelization. Using a pre-compiled application executable machine code as an input, our mechanism statically generates simple but precise markers that indicate loop entries and loop exits, and dynamically monitors loop nesting that appears during the actual execution together with call context tree. To keep precise loop structures all the time, we monitor the indirect jumps that enter the loop regions and the setjmp/longjmp functions that cause irregular function call transfers. We also present a novel representation called Loop-Call Context Graph that can keep track of inter-procedural loop nests. We implement our mechanism and evaluate it using SPEC CPU2006 benchmark suite. The results confirm that our mechanism can successfully reveal the precise inter-procedural loop nest structures from all of SPEC CPU2006 benchmark executions without any particular compiler support. The results also show that it can reduce runtime loop detection overheads compared with the existing loop profiling method.

    Survivability is an essential requirement of the networked information systems analogous to the dependability. The definition of survivability proposed by Knight in [16] provides a rigorous way to define the concept. However, the Knight's specification does not provide a behavior model of the system as well as a verification framework for determining the survivability of a system satisfying a given specification. This paper proposes a complete formal framework for specifying and verifying the concept of system survivability on the basis of Knight's research. A computable probabilistic model is proposed to specify the functions and services of a networked information system. A quantified survivability specification is proposed to indicate the requirement of the survivability. A probabilistic refinement relation is defined to determine the survivability of the system. The framework is then demonstrated with three case studies: the restaurant system (RES), the Warship Command and Control system (LWC) and the Command-and-Control (C2) system.

    This paper propose a novel method for obtaining statistical results such as averages, variances, and correlations without leaking any raw data values from data-holders by using multiple pseudonyms. At present, to obtain statistical results using a large amount of data, we need to collect all data in the same storage device. However, gathering real-world data that were generated by different people is not easy because they often contain private information. The authors split the roles of servers into publishing pseudonyms and collecting answers. Splitting these roles, different entities can more easily join as pseudonym servers than in previous secure multi-party computation methods and there is less chance of collusion between servers. Thus, our method enables data holders to protect themselves against malicious attacks from data users. We also estimated a typical problem that occurred with our method and added a pseudonym availability confirmation protocol to prevent the problem. We report our evaluation of the effectiveness of our method through implementation and experimentation and discuss how we incorporated the WebSocket protocol and MySQL Memoty Storage Engine to remove the bottleneck and improve the implementation style. Finally, we explain how our method can obtain averages, variances, and correlation from 5000 data holders within 50 seconds.

  • Cross-Layering Optimization for Low Energy Consumption in Wireless Body Area Networks

    Wireless body area networks (WBANs) have to work with low power and long lifetime to satisfy human biological safety requirements in e-health; therefore extremely low energy consumption is significant for WBANs. IEEE 802.15.6 standard has been published for wearable and implanted applications which provide communication technology requirements in WBANs. In this paper, the cross-layering optimization methodology is used to minimize the network energy consumption. Both the priority strategy and sleep mechanism in IEEE802.15.6 are considered. Macroscopic sleep model based on WBAN traffic priority and microscopic sleep model based on MAC structure are proposed. Then the network energy consumption optimization problem is solved by Lagrange dual method, the master problem are vertically decomposed into two sub problems in MAC and transport layers which are dealt with gradient method. Finally, a solution including self-adaption sleep mechanism and node rate controlling is proposed. The results of this paper indicate that the algorithm converges quickly and reduces the network energy consumption remarkably.

  • Differential Game-Theoretic Analysis on Information Availability in Decentralized Demand-Side Energy Management Systems

    Differential games are considered an extension of optimal control problems, which are used to formulate centralized control problems in smart grids. Optimal control theory is used to study systems consisting of one agent with one objective, whereas differential games are used to formulate systems consisting of multiple agents with multiple objectives. Therefore, a differential-game-theoretic approach is appropriate for formulating decentralized demand-side energy management systems where there are multiple decision-making entities interacting with each other. Moreover, in many smart grid applications, we need to obtain information for control via communication systems. To formulate the influence of communication availability, differential game theory is also promising because the availability of communication is considered as part of an information structure (i.e., feedback or open-loop) in differential games. The feedback information structure is adopted when information for control can be obtained, whereas the open-loop information structure is applied when the information cannot be obtained because of communication failure. This paper proposes a comprehensive framework for evaluating the performance of demand-side actors in a demand-side management system using each control scheme according to both communication availability and sampling frequency. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed comprehensive framework allows for an analysis of trade-off for decentralized and centralized control schemes.

    A new real-time sound field transmission system is presented. To construct this system, a large listening area needs to be reproduced at not less than a constant height. Additionally, the driving signals of the loudspeakers should be obtained only from received signals of microphones. Wave field reconstruction (WFR) filtering for linear arrays of microphones and loudspeakers is considered to be suitable for this kind of system. An experimental system was developed to show the feasibility of real-time sound field transmission using the WFR filter. Experiments to measure the reproduced sound field and a subjective listening test of sound localization were conducted to evaluate the proposed system. Although the reproduced sound field included several artifacts such as spatial aliasing and faster amplitude decay, the experimental results indicated that the proposed system was able to provide sound localization accuracy for virtual sound sources comparable to that for real sound sources in a large listening area.

  • Adaptive Intra Prediction Mode Signaling Approach in H.264/AVC

    H.264/AVC estimates the prediction mode from the modes of neighboring blocks in order to reduce the quantity of bits needed to represent the best mode. The estimated mode is known as Most Probable Mode (MPM). When QP changes, the probability of MPM increases. In this paper, we propose an adaptive mode signaling method based on the probability of MPM. According to the probability of MPM, a conventional MPM method and the proposed merging method are adaptively used to signal the intra prediction mode. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an average bit savings of 0.727% and an average PSNR gain of 0.041dB. In the low bit rate condition, the proposed method achieves an average bit savings of 1.795%, and a PSNR gain of 0.103dB, compared to H.264/AVC.

    It is known that the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) provides various telecom services e.g., VoIP, instant messaging, and video conferencing. In the IMS, these services are provided with session initiation protocol (SIP) handled by call/session control function servers (CSCFs). Completing the SIP signaling call flow without delay is vital to provide satisfactory services to the users. For service continuity, previous studies redundantly synchronized session states of CSCFs with backup servers. This paper proposes an IMS restoration system that selectively stores the session states. This is achieved by utilizing the retransmission mechanism of SIP. Time-based simulation emulating the process of backup servers shows that the proposed system reduces the number of backup servers to less than 38% compared to the previous studies, without degrading the service quality.

  • Robust and Fast Phonetic String Matching Method for Lyric Searching Based on Acoustic Distance

    This paper proposes a robust and fast lyric search method for music information retrieval (MIR). The effectiveness of lyric search systems based on full-text retrieval engines or web search engines is highly compromised when the queries of lyric phrases contain incorrect parts due to mishearing. To improve the robustness of the system, the authors introduce acoustic distance, which is computed based on a confusion matrix of an automatic speech recognition experiment, into Dynamic-Programming (DP)-based phonetic string matching to identify the songs that the misheard lyric phrases refer to. An evaluation experiment verified that the search accuracy is increased by 4.4% compared with the conventional method. Furthermore, in this paper a two-pass search algorithm is proposed to realize real-time execution. The algorithm pre-selects the probable candidates using a rapid index-based search in the first pass and executes a DP-based search process with an adaptive termination strategy in the second pass. Experimental results show that the proposed search method reduced processing time by more than 86.2% compared with the conventional methods for the same search accuracy.
