A digital noncoherent demodulation scheme is presented for reception of Gaussian frequency shift keying (GFSK) signals with small modulation index. The proposed differential demodulator utilizes oversampled signals to estimate the symbol timing and to compensate the frequency offset. The performance of the proposed receiver is evaluated in terms of the bit-error rate (BER). Numerical results show that the proposed demodulator provides performance comparable to that of conventional baseband differential demodulator, while significantly reducing the implementation complexity suitable for single chip integration with direct conversion radio frequency module. Finally the performance of the proposed receiver is improved by adding a simple decision feedback module.

The concept of stochastic association has originally been proposed in relation to single-electron devices having stochastic behavior due to quantum effects. Stochastic association is one of the promising concepts for future VLSI systems that exceed the conventional digital systems based on deterministic operation. This paper proposes a CMOS stochastic associative processor using PWM (pulse-width modulation) chaotic signals. The processor stochastically extracts one of the stored binary patterns depending on the order of similarity to the input. We confirms stochastic associative processing operation by experiments for digit pattern association using the CMOS test chip.
Deterministic execution testing has been considered a promising way for concurrent program testing because of its ability to replay a program's execution. Since, however, deterministic execution requires that a synchronization event sequence to be replayed be feasible and valid, it is not directly applicable to a situation in which synchronization sequences, being valid but infeasible, are taken into account. Resolving this problem is very important because a program may still meet its specification although the feasibility of all valid sequences is not satisfied. In this paper, we present a new approach to deterministic execution for testing concurrent systems. The proposed approach makes use of the notion of event independence and constructs an automation which accepts all the sequences semantically equivalent to a given event sequence to be replayed. Consequently, we can allow a program to be executed according to event sequences other than the given (possible infeasible) sequence if they can be accepted by the automation.

In this paper, we describe a method for estimating external camera parameters in real time. We investigated the effectiveness of this method for annotating real scenes with 3-D virtual objects on a wearable computer. The proposed method enables determining known natural feature points of objects through multiplied color histogram matching and template matching. This external-camera-parameter calculation method consists of three algorithms for PnP problems, and it uses each algorithm selectively. We implemented an experimental system based on our method on a wearable vision system. This experimental system can annotate real objects with 3D virtual objects by using the proposed method. The system was implemented in order to enable effective annotation in a mixed-reality environment on a wearable computing system. The system consists of an ultra small CCD camera set at the user's eye, an ultra small display, and a computer. This computer uses the proposed method to determine the camera parameters. It then renders virtual objects based on the camera parameters and synthesizes images on a display. The system works at 10 frames per second.

As a new category of the optical application system integrated with electronics, the opto-electronic information system (OEIS) is presented. Combination of the different characteristic technologies, optics and electronics, is expected to be useful for development of an effective and high-performance information systems. The properties of the optical technologies such as parallelism, high-speed, and large information capacity can be utilized for information processing. Even if some of the functions are emulated by the electronics, the optics give more effective solutions. To implement the OEIS, various optoelectronic devices and fabrication technologies are available including vertical cavity surface emitting lasers and spatial light modulators. There are two forms of system construction for the OEIS: an application of optics to an electronic-based system and the reversed form. As examples of the OEIS, the parallel matching architecture (PMA) and the thin observation module by bound optics (TOMBO) are presented. The PMA is an architecture of parallel computing system specified for global processing. This architecture shows a typical strategy to utilize the optical interconnection capability with flexibility of the electronic technology. The TOMBO presents possibility of morphological conversion using combination of the optical and electronic technologies. A compound-eye imaging system and post digital processing enable us to realize a very thin image capturing system. The issues related on development of the OEIS are proper usage of optics, effective fusion of the optical and electronic technologies, methodologies for system construction, fabrication supporting tools, and development of attractive demonstrators other than communication and interconnection fields.

PSK coherent demodulation has difficulty in achieving high speed carrier extraction and symbol synchronization when implementing to slow FH-SS radio system. On the other hand, implementation to FPGA has the requirement of a small gate size to design because of FPGA cost issue. We developed a QPSK coherent demodulation digital modem for FH-SS radio systems using FPGA by solving problems. The designed modem performs symbol synchronization with no carrier extractions, under the limitation of the small gate size requirement. The modem employs shift arithmetic operation and a comb digital BPF to achieve very good synchronization lock-up performance with small gate size. In this paper, the symbol synchronization and the carrier tracking scheme are mainly discussed. Analysis of its performance and stability are also explained. The achievement of its very good performance is presented by experimental measurement.
In this paper, we describe a frame synchronization method for bi-orthogonal modulation systems. In bi-orthogonal modulation systems, several bi-orthogonal sequences are used for data transmission. Frame synchronization in bi-orthogonal modulation systems is difficult because transmitted sequences can change every frame. In the proposed method, each bi-orthogonal sequence consists of two different inner sequences. Each bi-orthogonal sequence has the same arrangement of two different inner sequences. A receiver can track the frame timing by observing the arrangement of inner sequences. In this paper, we analyze the bit error rate performance that takes into account the tracking performance of a system we developed based on our method. The spectral efficiency of the proposed system in code division multiple access (CDMA) systems is also investigated. As a result, we found that the proposed system is effective in synchronous CDMA systems.

In order to fabricate smart vision chips including photo detector compactly, we have proposed the application of three dimensional LSI technology for smart vision chips. Three dimensional technology has great potential to realize new biologically inspired systems inspired by not only the biological function but also the biological structure. In this paper, we describe our three dimensional LSI technology for biologically inspired circuits and the design of smart vision chips.

This paper describes the JAINTM JavaTM Call Control (JCC) Application Programming Interface (API), and its relationship to network protocols, in particular the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). JCC is a high-level object-oriented open, standard API for Next Generation Network (NGN) softswitches that enables rapid creation, by third parties, of services that can run independently of the underlying network technology (e.g. wireless, wired, packet, IP, PSTN) and protocols. SIP is a protocol that has been proposed for a wide variety of uses in IP networks, including call control. We argue that instead of being competitors, JCC and SIP are complementary, with JCC offering higher-layer programming abstractions and protocol-independence, and demonstrate by examples how to map JCC version 1.0 to a SIP environment. We thus show that for common call control applications using JCC is simpler, faster and less maintenance intensive than using SIP directly.
In this paper, a discrete-time convergence theorem for continuous-state Hopfield networks with self-interaction neurons is proposed. This theorem differs from the previous work by Wang in that the original updating rule is maintained while the network is still guaranteed to monotonically decrease to a stable state. The relationship between the parameters in a typical class of energy functions is also investigated, and consequently a "guided trial-and-error" technique is proposed to determine the parameter values. The third problem discussed in this paper is the post-processing of outputs, which turns out to be rather important even though it never attracts enough attention. The effectiveness of all the theorems and post-processing methods proposed in this paper is demonstrated by a large number of computer simulations on the assignment problem and the N-queen problem of different sizes.

This paper investigates the interference suppression effect from much higher rate dedicated physical channels (DPCHs) of a parallel-type coherent multistage interference canceller (COMSIC) with iterative channel estimation (ICE) by laboratory experiments in the transmit-power-controlled W-CDMA reverse link. The experimental results elucidate that when two interfering DPCHs exist with the spreading factor (SF) of 8 and with the ratio of the target signal energy per bit-to-interference power spectrum density ratio (Eb/I0) of fast transmit power control, ΔEb/I0, of -6 dB (which corresponds to 64 simultaneous DPCHs with SF = 64, i.e., the same symbol rate as the desired DPCH), the implemented COMSIC receiver with ICE exhibits a significant decrease in the required transmit signal energy per bit-to-background noise power spectrum density ratio (Eb/N0) at the average bit error rate (BER) of 10-3 (while the matched filter (MF)-based Rake receiver could not realize the average BER of 10-3 due to severe multiple access interference (MAI)). It is also found that the achieved BER performance at the average BER of 10-3 of the COMSIC receiver with the A/D converter quantization of 8 bits in the laboratory experiments is degraded by approximately 1.0 dB and 4.0 dB compared to the computer simulation results, when ΔEb/I0=-6 dB and -9 dB, respectively, due to the quantization error of the desired signal and path search error for the Rake combiner. Finally, we show that the required transmit Eb/N0 at the average BER of 10-3 of the third-stage COMSIC with ICE is decreased by approximately 0.3 and 0.5 dB compared to that of COMSIC with decision-feedback type channel estimation (DFCE) with and without antenna diversity reception, respectively.

This paper proposes a new method to recover the sign of local Gaussian curvature from multiple (more than three) shading images. The information required to recover the sign of Gaussian curvature is obtained by applying Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to the normalized irradiance measurements. The sign of the Gaussian curvature is recovered based on the relative orientation of measurements obtained on a local five point test pattern to those in the 2-D subspace called the eigen plane. Using multiple shading images gives a more accurate and robust result and minimizes the effect of shadows by allowing a larger area of the visible surface to be analyzed compared to methods using only three shading images. Furthermore, it allows the method to be applied to specular surfaces. Since PCA removes linear correlation among images, the method can produce results of high quality even when the light source directions are not widely dispersed.

This letter describes a new parallel combinatorial delayed multiplexing CDMA system for high-bit-rates mobile communications. It combines delayed multiplexing and parallel combinatory methods with the CDMA system to provide higher bit rates without the use of complex receivers. The results of computer simulations using the double-spike Rayleigh fading channel model in a multiple-user environment show that its down-link BER performance is the same as that of the conventional multicode system.
In this article, a hierarchical classifier is proposed for classification of ground-cover types of a satellite image of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The image contains seven ground-cover types, which are categorized into three groups using principal component analysis. The first group contains clouds only, the second consists of sea and cloud shadow over land, and the third contains land and three types of forest. The sea and shadow over land classes are classified with 99% accuracy using a network of threshold logic units. The land and forest classes are classified by multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) using texture features and intensity values. The average performance achieved by six trained MLPs is 91%. In order to improve the classification accuracy even further, the outputs of the six MLPs were combined using several committee machines. All committee machines achieved significant improvement in performance over the multilayer perceptron classifiers, with the best machine achieving over 92% correct classification.
We summarize recent studies on performance improvement in the correlation-based continuous-wave technique for optical fiber distributed strain measurement using Brillouin scattering, that had been proposed previously. The correlation-based technique enables the spatial resolution of 1 cm, which is difficult for conventional sensing techniques using Brillouin scattering to achieve. Though the correlation-based technique left a problem with measurement range, we have proposed methods to overcome it with keeping high spatial resolution. In addition, we verified usefulness of the technique for smart materials by measuring strain distribution along surface of a ring structure.
In this paper a different view on Viterbi's method for the estimation of the reverse link capacity of a single cell of CDMA based mobile communications systems is given. Viterbi's approach is well-known and of great importance for the capacity estimation. However, the interpretation of Viterbi's result on the system capacity is not that clear. Thus, we introduce a new approach giving accurate reasons for Viterbi's capacity estimation. When neglecting the noise power, both methods provide nearly the same result. We conclude that Viterbi's finding relates to the average capacity, which is an important statistical parameter. However, we should note that this average capacity will be not available all the time. The improvements discussed in this paper focus on the specification of a certain reliability about the availability of the average capacity.

This paper addresses the problem to extract moving object from the moving background in the mixed domain (MixeD), which makes it possible to carry the filtering in one dimension. Since the velocities of moving object and background are necessary for moving object extraction, we first estimate the velocities based on the appropriate spatial frequency point selection method in the MixeD. Then an optimal filter used for 1-D signal filtering is designed. By filtering 1-D signals over all spatial frequencies, signals with certain velocity vector are extracted, while the extracted image is obtained by applying the 2-D IDFT to the filtered signals. The simulation results show that the method can extract moving object based both on the correctly estimated velocity and the proposed optimal 1-D filter.
This paper describes the wafer-level, three-dimensional packaging for MEMS in which sensors, actuators, electronic circuits and other functions are combined together in one integrated block. Si wafers with built-in MEMS functions were integrated with no change in thickness to ensure mechanical strength and improve heat dissipation. In the entire process of three-dimensional integration, Si wafers were processed at temperatures below 400C to prevent degradation of their built-in functions. A description is made of the low-temperature oxidation technology developed by us, which makes through-holes of high density and high aspect ratio in Si wafers with built-in functions by the Optical Excitation Electropolishing Method (OEEM) and forms an oxide film on the hole walls simply by replacing electrolyte. Next, a description is presented of the bumpless interconnection method which fills through-holes of stacked layers with metal by the molten metal suction method and of the electrocapillary effect as a countermeasure to prevent the filler metal from dropping out of holes under its own weight.
Bidirectional reflection distribution functions (BRDFs) of commercially pure titanium sheets with three different kinds of surface morphology were measured. Those experimental BRDFs were analyzed by using Phong's reflection model. Topographic measurements of the specimens' surfaces were performed with using a stylus-method. An explicit microfacet model based on topographic data was proposed. With using the explicit microfacet model and geometrical optics the calculated BRDFs were obtained and then compared with the experimental BRDFs. Both of them were in a good agreement. Through this comparison physical meanings of Phong's reflection model were discussed. We concluded that with using the explicit microfacet model it will be possible to calculate the BRDF of the materials' surface in arbitrary illumination conditions and that this modeling will be useful to develop new aesthetic surface appearance in material industries, computer graphics, architectural design and surface science.
