  • Development and Outdoor Evaluation of an Experimental Platform in an 80-MHz Bandwidth 22 MIMO-OFDM System in 5.2-GHz Band

    The IEEE802.11ac task group has announced the use of a wider channel that extends the channel bandwidth to more than 80 MHz. We present an experimental platform consisting of a baseband and a RF unit in a 22 MIMO-OFDM system for the wider channel and report its system performance results from a field experiment. The MIMO-OFDM transceiver in the baseband unit has been designed to detect real-time MIMO and provides a maximum data rate of 600 Mbps. OFDM tends to cause high peak PAPR for wider channels and distorts the power amplifier performance in the RF unit. We have improved the non-linear distortion by optimizing the OFDM preamble and evaluated its performance by conducting a simulation integrated with baseband processing and a RF. In the field experiment, our platform tested the communication performance in a farm and a passage environment.

  • On Improving the Reliability and Performance of the YAFFS Flash File System

    In this paper, we propose three techniques to improve the performance of YAFFS (Yet Another Flash File System), while enhancing the reliability of the system. Specifically, we first propose to manage metadata and user data separately on segregated blocks. This modification not only leads to the reduction of the mount time but also reduces the garbage collection time. Second, we tailor the wear-leveling to the segregated metadata and user data blocks. That is, worn out blocks between the segregated blocks are swapped, which leads to more evenly worn out blocks increasing the lifetime of the system. Finally, we devise an analytic model to predict the expected garbage collection time. By accurately predicting the garbage collection time, the system can perform garbage collection at more opportune times when the user's perceived performance may not be negatively affected. Performance evaluation results based on real implementations show that our modifications enhance performance and reliability without incurring additional overheads. Specifically, the YAFFS with our proposed techniques outperforms the original YAFFS by six times in terms of mount speed and five times in terms of benchmark performance, while reducing the average erase count of blocks by 14%.

  • Adaptive Prefetching Scheme for Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand Systems with a Media Server

    In this paper, we consider Peer-to-Peer Video-on-Demand (P2P VoD) systems based on the BitTorrent file sharing protocol. Since the Rarest First policy adopted in the original BitTorrent protocol frequently fails to collect pieces corresponding to a video file by their playback time, we need to develop a new piece selection rule particularly designed for P2P VoDs. In the proposed scheme, we assume the existence of a media server which can upload any piece upon request, and try to bound the load of such media server with two techniques. The first technique is to estimate pieces which are not held by any peer and prefetch them from the media server. The second technique is to switch the mode of each peer according to the estimated size of the P2P network. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by simulation.

  • A Simplified 3D Localization Scheme Using Flying Anchors

    WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) are becoming more widely used in various fields, and localization is a crucial and essential issue for sensor network applications. In this letter, we propose a low-complexity localization mechanism for WSNs that operate in 3D (three-dimensional) space. The basic idea is to use aerial vehicles that are deliberately equipped with anchor nodes. These anchors periodically broadcast beacon signals containing their current locations, and unknown nodes receive these signals as soon as the anchors enter their communication range. We estimate the locations of the unknown nodes based on the proposed scheme that transforms the 3D problem into 2D computations to reduce the complexity of 3D localization. Simulated results show that our approach is an effective scheme for 3D self-positioning in WSNs.

    A signal model and weighted-average based estimation techniques are proposed to estimate the angle-of-arrival (AOA) parameters of multiple clusters for a low data rate ultrawide band (LR-UWB) based wireless positioning system. The optimal AOA estimation techniques for the LR-UWB wireless positioning system according to the cluster condition are introduced and it is shown that the proposed techniques are superior to the conventional technique from the standpoint of performance.

  • Hybrid Parallel Extraction of Isosurface Components from 3D Rectilinear Volume Data

    We describe an efficient algorithm that extracts a connected component of an isosurface, or a contour, from a 3D rectilinear volume data. The efficiency of the algorithm is achieved by three factors: (i) directly working with rectilinear grids, (ii) parallel utilization of a multi-core CPU for extracting active cells, the cells containing the contour, and (iii) parallel utilization of a many-core GPU for computing the geometries of a contour surface in each active cell using CUDA. Experimental results show that our hybrid parallel implementation achieved up to 20x speedup over existing methods on an ordinary PC. Our work coupled with the Contour Tree framework is useful for quickly segmenting, displaying, and analyzing a feature of interest in 3D rectilinear volume data without being distracted by other features.

    In this letter, we propose a novel speech enhancement algorithm based on data-driven residual gain estimation. The entire system consists of two stages. At the first stage, a conventional speech enhancement algorithm enhances the input signal while estimating several signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-related parameters. The residual gain, which is estimated by a data-driven method, is applied to further enhance the signal at the second stage. A number of experimental results show that the proposed speech enhancement algorithm outperforms the conventional speech enhancement technique based on soft decision and the data-driven approach using SNR grid look-up table.

    Radio frequency on free-space optical (RoFSO) technology is regarded as a new universal platform for enabling seamless convergence of fiber and FSO communication networks, thus extending broadband connectivity to underserved areas. In this paper, we investigate the performance to characterize the transmission of code division multiple access (CDMA) based wireless signals over RoFSO system using aperture averaging (AA) technique under strong turbulence conditions. An analytical model including a modified carrier-to-noise-plus- interference ratio (CNIR) form and a novel closed-form expression for the bit-error rate (BER) is derived. Unlike earlier work, our model takes into consideration the effect of using the AA technique modeled by the gamma-gamma distribution, the optical noises, the intermodulation distortion term due to the laser diode non-linearity and the multiple interference access. By investigating the impact of AA on our model in the strong turbulence regime, we show that there is a design trade-off between the receiver lens aperture and the number of users to achieve a required CNIR ensuring a substantial scintillation fade reduction. The presented work can be used as baseline for the design and performance evaluation of the RoFSO system's ability to transmit different broadband wireless services signals over turbulent FSO links in real scenarios.

  • A 0.18 µm CMOS 12 Gb/s 10-PAM Serial Link Transmitter

    A 12 Gb/s 10-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) serial-link transmitter was implemented using a 0.18 µm CMOS process. The proposed 10-PAM transmitter achieves a channel efficiency of 4 bit/symbol by dual-mode amplitude modulations using 10 differential-mode levels and 3 common-mode levels. The measured maximum data-rate was 12 Gb/s over 0.7-m cable and 2-cm printed circuit board (PCB) traces. The entire transmitter consumes 432 mW such that the figure of merit of the transmitter is 36 pJ/bit. The present work demonstrates the greater channel efficiency of 4 bit/symbol than the currently reported multi-level PAM transmitters.

  • Robust Adaptive Array with Variable Uncertainty Bound under Weight Vector Norm Constraint

    The doubly constrained robust Capon beamformer (DCRCB), which employs a spherical uncertainty set of the steering vector together with the constant norm constraint, can provide robustness against arbitrary array imperfections. However, its performance can be greatly degraded when the uncertainty bound of the spherical set is not properly selected. In this paper, combining the DCRCB and the weight-vector-norm-constrained beamformer (WVNCB), we suggest a new robust adaptive beamforming method which allows us to overcome the performance degradation due to improper selection of the uncertainty bound. In WVNCB, its weight vector norm is limited not to be larger than a threshold. Both WVNCB and DCRCB belong to a class of diagonal loading methods. The diagonal loading range of WVNCB, which dose not consider negative loading, is extended to match that of DCRCB which can have a negative loading level as well as a positive one. In contrast to the conventional DCRCB with a fixed uncertainty bound, the bound in the proposed method varies such that the weight vector norm constraint is satisfied. Simulation results show that the proposed beamformer outperforms both DCRCB and WVNCB, being far less sensitive to the uncertainty bound than DCRCB.

    This Letter defines thirteen useful correlation measures for directed weighted complex network analysis. First, in-strength and out-strength are defined for each node in the directed weighted network. Then, one node-based strength-strength correlation measure and four arc-based strength-strength correlation measures are defined. In addition, considering that each node is associated with in-degree, out-degree, in-strength and out-strength, four node-based strength-degree correlation measures and four arc-based strength-degree correlation measures are defined. Finally, we use these measures to analyze the world trade network and the food web. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed measures for directed weighted networks.

    We propose an AP-based handoff management scheme in which each AP having multiple interfaces communicates with MSs by turns, prohibiting from using the same channel as neighboring APs at the same time to avoid interference. In the proposed scheme, APs support handoff management to accomplish MS-unaware handoff. Performance evaluation shows that the proposed scheme can not only achieve low handoff delay, but enhance throughput performance.

  • Secure Key Transfer Protocol Based on Secret Sharing for Group Communications Open Access

    Group key establishment is an important mechanism to construct a common session key for group communications. Conventional group key establishment protocols use an on-line trusted key generation center (KGC) to transfer the group key for each participant in each session. However, this approach requires that a trusted server be set up, and it incurs communication overhead costs. In this article, we address some security problems and drawbacks associated with existing group key establishment protocols. Besides, we use the concept of secret sharing scheme to propose a secure key transfer protocol to exclude impersonators from accessing the group communication. Our protocol can resist potential attacks and also reduce the overhead of system implementation. In addition, comparisons of the security analysis and functionality of our proposed protocol with some recent protocols are included in this article.

    This paper proposes likelihood smoothing techniques to improve decision tree-based acoustic models, where decision trees are used as replacements for Gaussian mixture models to compute the observation likelihoods for a given HMM state in a speech recognition system. Decision trees have a number of advantageous properties, such as not imposing restrictions on the number or types of features, and automatically performing feature selection. This paper describes basic configurations of decision tree-based acoustic models and proposes two methods to improve the robustness of the basic model: DT mixture models and soft decisions for continuous features. Experimental results for the Aurora 2 speech database show that a system using decision trees offers state-of-the-art performance, even without taking advantage of its full potential and soft decisions improve the performance of DT-based acoustic models with 16.8% relative error rate reduction over hard decisions.

    The involvement of IEEE 802.15.4 Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in diverse applications has made the realistic analysis of sensor power dissipation in distributed network environments an essential research issue. In this paper, we propose and thoroughly analyze a power dissipation model for Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) based IEEE 802.15.4 distributed multi-hop WSNs. Our model takes the loss rate of frames, neighbor sensors density in communication range of a sensor, number of hops, distance of source to the sink, and density of the network into account. We evaluate the impact of these factors on overall power dissipation. We also perform comprehensive analysis of overheads caused by message routing through multi-hop distributed networks. We validate our proposed model through Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that our power dissipation model is more realistic compared to other proposed models in terms of accuracy and multiplicity of the environments.

  • Modeling and Analysis for Universal Plug and Play Using PIPE2

    Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows devices automatic discovery and control of services available in those devices connected to a Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network. Although many products are designed using UPnP, little attention has been given to UPnP related to modeling and performance analysis. This paper uses a framework of Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) to model and analyze the behavior of UPnP systems. The framework includes modeling UPnP, reachability decomposition, GSPN analysis, and reward assignment. Then, the Platform Independent Petri net Editor 2 (PIPE2) tool is used to model and evaluate the controllers in terms of power consumption, system utilization and network throughput. Through quantitative analysis, the steady states in the operation and notification stage dominate the system performance, and the control point is better than the device in power consumption but the device outperforms the control point in evaluating utilization. The framework and numerical results are useful to improve the quality of services provided in UPnP devices.

    Well-crystallized Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ powders were grown on a substrate by the vapor phase reaction between a mixed powder (barium carbonate and europium oxide) and SiO gas. The vaporization of SiO occurs at 1400–1600 from the SiO2 source (or SiO powder) in a reducing atmosphere. The formed SiO gas was transported by 95 vol% Ar - 5 vol% H2 gas and reacted with the raw material powders. The emission intensity of the Ba2SiO4:Eu2 + phosphor synthesized by the new vapor phase technique is about 2.6 times higher than that of a conventional solid-state reaction sample.

  • A 4 Gb/s Adaptive FFE/DFE Receiver with a Data-Dependent Jitter Measurement

    This paper presents an adaptive FFE/DFE receiver with an algorithm that measures the data-dependent jitter. The proposed adaptive algorithm determines the compensation level by measuring the input data-dependent jitter. The adaptive algorithm is combined with a clock and data recovery phase detector. The receiver is fabricated in with 0.13 µm CMOS technology, and the compensation range of equalization is up to 26 dB at 2 GHz. The test chip is verified for a 40 inch FR4 trace and a 53 cm flexible printed circuit channel. The receiver occupies an area of 440 µm 520 µm and has a power dissipation of 49 mW (excluding the I/O buffers) from a 1.2 V supply.

  • Greedy Algorithm for Target Q Coverage in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Target Q coverage is needed to secure the stability of data collection in WSN. The targets may have different level of importance then the multiple-target coverage scheme must schedule sensors according to each target's weight to increase the network lifetime. The schedule scheme previously proposed for weighted coverage uses an iterative solution to solve the problem but it has long computation time. We propose a heuristic greedy-TQC algorithm to use the residual energy of sensors to generate multiple scheduling cover sets. A simulation shows a dramatic reduction in computation time. The greedy-TQC algorithm is suitable for the frequently topology-changing WSN and for the often changing targets' weights in WSN.

  • An Application of Microwave Measurement for Complex Dielectric Constants to Detecting Snow and Ice on Road Surface

    In order to detect snow and ice on a road surface, the microwave measurement method of dielectric constants are presented. And some examples of measurements for artificial and natural snow and ice using the method are introduced. The results show reasonable estimations of the dielectric constants, and they indicate that the method could be utilized for the snow and ice detection.
