  • Data Compression of Ambulatory ECG by Using Multi-Template Matching and Residual Coding

    This paper proposed a new algorithm of data compression for ambulatory ECG, where no distortion was included in the reconstructed signal, templates were constructed selectively from detected beats, and categorized ECG morphologies (templates) could be displayed in decoding the compressed data. This algorithm consisted of subtracting a best-fit template from the detected beat with an aid of multi-template matching, first differencing of the resulting residuals and modified Huffman coding. This algorithm was evaluated by applying it to ECG signals of the American Heart Association (AHA) data base in terms of bit rates. Following features were indicated. (1) Decompressed signal coincided completely with the original sampled ECG data. (2) Bit rate was approximately 800 bps at the appropriate threshold 50-60 units (1 unit2.4µVolt) for the template matching. This bit rate was almost the same as that of the direct compression (encoding the first differenced signal of original signal). (3) The decompressed templates could make it easy to classify the templates into the normal and abnormal beats; this could be executed without fully decompressing the ECG signal.

  • A Specific Design Approach for Automotive Microcomputers

    When used for automotive applications, microcomputers have to meet two requirements more demanding than those for general use. One of these requirements is to respond to external events within a time scale of microseconds; the other is the high quality and high reliability necessary for the severe environmental operating conditions and the ambitious market requirements inherent to automotive applications. These needs especially the latter one have been responded to by further elaboration of each basic technology involved in semiconductor manufacturing. At the same time, various logic parts have been built into the microcomputer. This paper deals with several design approaches to the high quality and high reliability objective. First, testability improvement by the logical separation method focusing on the logic simulation model for generating test vectors, which enables us to reduce the time required for test vector development in half. Next, noise suppression methods to gain electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Then, simplified memory transistor's analysis to evaluate the V/I-characteristics directly via external pins without opening the model seal, removing the passivation and placing a probe needle on the chip. Finally, increased reliability of on-chip EPROM using a special circuit raising the threshold value by approximately 1(V) compared to EPROM's without such a circuit.

  • Effects of Integration Time on Rain Attenuation Statistics at 20GHz

    By using measured attenuation time-series data over 2 years at 19.5GHz with an integration time of 1 sec, effects of the integration time on attenuation statistics are presented. It is observed that the effect on cumulative distribution of attenuation and the relation between annual and the worst-month cumulative time percentages are not significant for the practical prediction purposes. The effect is significant in attenuation duration statistics.

    This paper gives a systematic approach to generate a Markov chain by a discrete-valued auto-regressive equation, which is a a nonlinear auto-regressive equation having a discrete-valued solution. The power spectrum, the correlation function and the transition probability are explicitly obtained in terms of the discrete-valued auto-regressive equation. Some computer results are illustrated in figures.

    The two-dimensional nested cellular automata array presented here as a method for testing CCD arrays accommodates a set of spatial bilateral inhibition and excitation, and thus generates spatio-temporal artificial chaotic signals. Adequate use of the spatio-temporal pulses achieves exact line detection that is completely different from the template-matching scheme used by conventional methods.

  • GaAs MESFET Circuit Structures Based on Virtual Ground Concept for High-Performance ASICs

    Two types of circuit architecture for GaAs LSI are described. The first circuit is named Stacked DCFL which has supply voltage compatibility with Si CMOS/BiCMOS and ECL operating on 3 V or 3.3 V. A divide by 128/129 prescaler IC has been developed to confirm the Stacked DCFL circuit operation. The second circuit is named SVFL which operates on single supply voltage by using Schottky FET characteristics in spite of normally-on FET logic. Both circuit architectures are based on the virtual ground concept. The transition time of 45 psec was obtained by the SVFL ring oscillator circuit fabricated with 1 µm gate length FET process, and the transition time of DCFL using the same process was from 80 psec to 100 psec. Stacked DCFL and SVFL are candidates for an internal gate and an input/output interface circuit for GaAs ASIC, respectively.

    This paper discusses the fully three-dimensional finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to analyze a monopole antenna mounted on a rectangular conducting box covered with a layer of dielectric. The effects of the conductivity and the permittivity of the dielectric layer are investigated. It is shown that all calculation results agree very well with the measured data.

    We propose a recognition method for HMM using a simultaneous generative histogram. Proposed method uses the correlation between two features, which is expressed by a simultaneous generative histogram. Then output probabilities of integrated HMM are conditioned by the codeword of another feature. The proposed method is applied to isolated digit word recognition to confirm its validity.

  • Data Compression of a Gaussian Signal by TP Algorithm and Its Application to the ECG

    In the present paper, we focus ourselves on the turning point (TP) algorithm proposed by Mueller and evaluate its performance when applied to a Gaussian signal with definite covariance function. Then the ECG wave is modeled by Gaussian signals: namely, the ECG is divided into two segments, the baseline segment and the QRS segment. The baseline segment is modeled by a Gaussian signal with butterworth spectrum and the QRS one by a narrow-band Gaussian signal. Performance of the TP algorithm is evaluated and compared when it is applied to a real ECG signal and its Gaussian model. The compression rate (CR) and the normalized mean square error (NMSE) are used as measures of performance. These measures show good coincidence with each other when applied to Gaussian signals with the mentioned spectra. Our results suggest that performance evaluation of the compression algorithms based on the stochastic-process model of ECG waves may be effective.

    This paper presents an equation capable of briefly evaluating the length of white noise sequence to be sent as a training signal. The equation is formulated by utilizing the formula describing the convergence property, which has been derived from the IIR filter expression of the NLMS algorithm. The result revealed that the length is directly proportional to I/[K(2-K)] where K is a step gain and I is the number of the adaptive filter taps.

    This paper describes a vision system, which is based on ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) approaches, for vehicle guidance on highways. After reviewing related work in the field of intelligent vehicles, stereo vision, and ASIC-based approaches, the paper focuses on a stereo vision system developed for intelligent cruise control. The system measures the distance to the vehicle in front using trinocular triangulation. Application specific processor architectures were developed for low mass-production cost, real-time operation, low power consumption, and small physical size. The system was installed in a trunk of a car and evaluated successfully on highways.

  • A Model for Explaining a Phenomenon in Creative concept Formation

    This paper gives a model to explain one phenomenon found in the process of creative concept formation, i.e. the phenomenon that people often get trapped in some state where the mental world remains nebulous and sometimes suddenly make a jump to a new concept. This phenomenon has been qualitatively explained mainly by the philosophers but there have not been models for explaining it quantitatively. Such model is necessary in a new research field to study the systems for aiding human creative activities. So far, the work on creation aid has not had theoretical background and the systems have been built based only on trial and error. The model given in this paper explains some aspects of the phenomena found in creative activities and give some suggestions for the future systems for aiding creative concept formation.

    Typical processes controlled by hard real-time computer systems undergo several, mutually exclusive modes of operation. By deterministically switching among a number of static schedules, a pre run-time scheduled system is able to adapt to changing environmental situations. This paper presents concepts for specification of mode changes, construction of static schedules for modes and transitions, and timely run-time execution of mode changes. We propose concepts for mode changes in the context pre run-time scheduled hard real-time systems. While MARS is used to illustrate the concepts' application, they are applicable to a variety of systems. Our methods adhere closely to the ones established for single modes. By decomposing the system into a set of disjoint modes, the design process and its comprehension are facilitated, testing efforts are reduced significantly, and solutions are enabled which do not exist if all system activities of all modes are combined into a single schedule.

  • Design of High Speed 88-Port Self-Routing Switch on Multi-Chip Module

    The design of a high speed self-routing network switch module is described. Clock distribution and timing design to achieve high-speed operation are considered. A 88-port self-routing Benes network switch prototype on multi-chip module is fabricated using 44-port space division switch LSIs. The switch module achieves a maximum measured clock frequency of 750MHz under switching operation. Resultant total throughput of the switch module is 12Gbit/s.

    Material research on capacitor dielectrics for DRAM applications is reviewed. The state of the art technologies to prepare Si3N4,Ta2O5, and SrTiO3 thin films for capacitors are described. The down-scaling limits for Si3N4 and Ta2O5 capacitors seem to be 3.5 and 1.5 nm SiO2 equivalent thickness, respectively. Combined with a rugged polysilicon electrode surface,Si3N4 and Ta2O5 based-capacitors are available for 256 Mbit and 1 Gbit DRAMs. At the present time, the minimum SiO2 equivalent thickness for high permittivity materials is around 1 nm with the leakage current density of 10-7 A/cm2. Among the great variety of ferroelectrics, two families of materials,i.e., Pb (Zr, Ti) O3 and (Ba, Sr) TiO3 have emerged as the most promising candidates for 1 Gbit DRAMs and beyond. If the chemical vapor deposition technology can be established for these materials, capacitor dielectrics should not be a limiting issue for Gbit DRAMs.

    We propose an advanced hyper parallel testing method which improves the line-mode test method by adding data inversion registers which we call the Advanced Line-mode Test (ALT). This testing method has the same testing capability as the conventional bit-by-bit and multi-bit test method (MBT), because it enables the application of a high sensitive and practical test patterns under the hyper parallel condition. The testing time for fixed data patterns are reduced by 1/1900 (all-0/1, checker board, and etc.). Moreover, the ALT can be applicable to the continuous patterns (march, walking, and etc.). The ALT improved from the line-mode test with registers and comparators (LTR) is able to applicable to the most test patterns and to reduce the testing time remarkably, and is suitable for the ULSI memories.

    The intensity-dependent transmission characteristics of an Ag+Na+ ion-exchanged glass waveguide with a nematic liquid crystal MBBA cover have been investigated experimentally using an Ar+ laser. It is found that the transmission characteristics of the TE1 mode are strongly influenced by temperature. Optical bistability has been observed at a particular temperature. Such the strong temperature dependence is believed to be brought by an increase in ordinary refractive index of the MBBA cover due to temperature rise.

  • A Feasibility Study on a Simple Stored Channel Simulator for Urban Mobile Radio Environments

    A stored channel simulator for digital mobile radio enviroments is proposed, which enables the field tests in the laboratory under identical conditions, since it can reproduce the actual multipath radio channels by using the channel impulse responses (CIR's) measured in the field. Linear interpolation of CIR is introduced to simplify the structure of the proposed simulator. The performance of the proposed simulator is confirmed by the laboratory tests.

    For the production of high quality synthetic sounds in a text-to-speech system, an excellent synthesizing method of speech signals is indispensable. In this paper, a new speech analysis-synthesis method for the text-to-speech system is proposed. The signals of voiced speech, which have a line spectrum structure at intervals of pitch in the linear frequency domain, can be represented approximately by the superposition of sinusoidal waves. In our system, analysis and synthesis are performed using such a harmonic structure of the signals of voiced speech. In the analysis phase, assuming an exact harmonic structure model at intervals of pitch against the fine structure of the short-time power spectrum, the fundamental frequency f0 is decided so as to minimize the error of the log-power spectrum at each peak position. At the same time, according to the value of the above minimized error, the rate of periodicity of the speech signal is detemined. Then the log-power spectrum envelope is represented by the cosine-series interpolating the data which are sampled at every pitch period. In the synthesis phase, numerical solutions of non-linear differential equations which generate sinusoidal waves are used. For voiced sounds, those equations behave as a group of mutually synchronized oscillators. These sinusoidal waves are superposed so as to reconstruct the line spectrum structure. For voiceless sounds, those non-linear differential equations work as passive filters with input noise sources. Our system has some characteristics as follows. (1) Voiced and voiceless sounds can be treated in a same framowork. (2) Since the phase and the power information of each sinusoidal wave can be easily controlled, if necessary, periodic waveforms in the voiced sounds can be precisely reproduced in the time domain. (3) The fundamental frequency f0 and phoneme duration can be easily changed without much degradation of original sound quality.
