  • FDTD Analysis of Electromagnetic Interaction between Portable Telephone and Human Head

    Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis is performed to evaluate the distributions of specific absorption rate (SAR) in a human head during use of a handheld portable telephone. A heterogeneous head model has been assumed which is comprised of 273 108 cubic cells 2.5 mm on a side, with the electrical properties of anatomical equivalents. A handset model has been assumed to be a metal box with either a quarter-wavelength monopole or a half-wavelength dipole operating at 900 MHz or 1.5 GHz. The maximum local SARs in the head are evaluated under various exposure conditions. The dependence of the maximum local SARs on the difference in the structures or parameters of the model, i.e. the distance between the antenna and the head, the heterogeneity of the head, the antenna type, the volume of the smoothing region of the local SAR value, skin electrical constants, and the presence or absence of auricles, are examined. It is shown that the heterogeneity of the head barely affect the maximum local SAR when the telephone is located sufficiently close to the head. It is also shown that the electrical constants of skin which has lower conductivity provide the lower maximum local SAR in the head while the maximum local SAR within the brain is not significantly affected. The auricle which lies in closest proximity to the antenna is shown to have significant effect on the maximum local SAR. It is suggested that the presence of the auricle enhances the maximum local SAR by a factor that is 1.7-2.4 larger than the model without auricles.

    Direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) is a promising candidate for 3rd generation mobile communications systems. We recently proposed a coherent multicode DS-CDMA (CM-CDMA) scheme that uses pilot symbol-aided coherent RAKE, interference power measurement based transmit power control, orthogonal multicode transmission, and concatenated channel coding. We have implemented a CM-CDMA test-bed for a series of laboratory and field tests using the 2 GHz band. This paper describes the test-bed system and experimental results are presented. It is confirmed that pilot symbol-aided coherent RAKE can reduce the required signal energy per bit-to-interference plus background noise spectrum density ratio (Eb/Io) by 2-3 dB from that achievable with differential detection. Also shown is that by using both RAKE combining and SIR-based power control the transmit power of mobile stations can be significantly reduced. Measurement results show that the required Eb/Io degrades only slightly when 24 code-channels (768 kbps) are used since orthogonal Gold sequences are used as short spreading codes.

  • Modular Middle-Scale SQUID Magnetometer System for Neuromagnetic Research

    A new 19-channel SQUID magnetometer system has been developed for research use in order to measure the neuromagnetic fields originating from cortices of the human brain.The system could function for 6 days with a one-time supply of about 25 L of liquid helium. The system consists of Nb/Al-oxide/Nb SQUID sensors with 2nd-order gradiometers, tank circuits, readout electronics, a liquid helium dewar, a gantry, and a prefabricated shielded room. The gradiometers cover a circular area of 15 cm radius. We used fine stainless steel leads for electric connection between the sensors and room-temperature electronics with low thermal conduction in a low helium consumption dewar. The system could function for 6 days with a one-time supply of about 25L of liquid helium. The system can be thermally cycled for repeated measurements, with an intervening nonusage period at room temperature. The noise characteristics, for both the time and frequency domains, of all channels were measured. From an analysis of the voltage output at the phase-sensitive detector, the flux-origin noise which is generated by external sources was dominant in the white noise frequency. The power spectra of the noise field were below 10 fT/Hz1/2 at 10-100 Hz and below 18 fT/Hz1/2 at 1-10 Hz. Some other peaks of power line frequencies such as 50 Hz and 150 Hz were observed at several channels. Sound-evoked magnetic fields were measured from the temporal area of the head upon application of tone bursts. The evoked fields were recorded with the amplitude of about 250 fTpp. The isofield contours of the peak response showed that the measurement area is large enough to estimate current dipoles. It is confirmed that the system has the ability to measure magnetic fields from the human brain.

    The performance of APP (a posteriori probability) decoding algorithm which is well known as a soft decision decoding algorithm for majority logic decodable codes is further improved by iterating the algorithm one or more times. This letter shows that there exists the optimal non-zero threshold value of the decision function that minimizes the decoded error rate in two-pass APP decoding though the optimal threshold value in one-pass APP decoding is zero.

    A close correlation between the YBa2Cu3Oy film morphology and location of the (100) MgO substrate during growth by excimer laser ablation was obtained. When the susbtrate was placed inside the fringe portion of the laser plume, the spiral shape was most clearly seen on the entire film surface for both the conventional and eclipse ablation methods. When the substrate was placed outside the plume, the spiral growth was less pronounced. On the other hand, when the substrate was placed inside the plume core, marked deformation of the morphology occurred, and the superconducting critical temperature was lowered. This correlation was explained to some extent by the spatial variation of kinetic energy of the flying growth species.

    Physical optics(PO) and the aperture field integration method (AFIM) give accurate and similar field patterns near the first few sidelobes of reflector antennas. It is widely accepted that the use of AFIM is restricted to norrower angles than PO. In this paper, uniform equivalent edge currents of PO and AFIM are compared analytically and their equivalence in high frequency in discussed. It is asymptotically verified that the patterns by AFIM are almost identical to PO fields in the full 360angular region, provided that AFIM uses the equivalent surface currents consisting of two components, that is, the geometrical optics(GO) reflected fields from the reflector and the incident fields from the feed source, the latter of which are often neglected. Slightly weaker equivalence is predicted for cross polarization patterns. Numerical comparison of PO and AFIM confirms all these results, the equivalence holds not only for large but also for a very small refiector of the order of one wavelength diameter.

    In this paper the normalized lease mean square (NLMS) algorithm based on clipping input samples with an arbitrary threshold level is studied. The convergence characteristics of these clipping algorithms with correlated data are presented. In the clipping algorithm, the input samples are clipped only when the input samples are greater than or equal to the threshold level and otherwise the input samples are set to zero. The results of the analysis yield that the gain constant to ensure convergence, the speed of the convergence, and the misadjustment are functions of the threshold level. Furthermore an optimum threshold level is derived in terms of the convergence speed under the condition of the constant misadjustment.

    This paper describes the effects of operating temperature on delay time in a 1-V multi-threshold CMOS(MTCMOS) circuit, Delay-time analysis including the temperature factor shows that the delay-time variation of the CMOS circuit becomes amall for low-voltage operation and the variation is mainly determined by the threshold voltage and its variation-rate with temperature. As a design method of a MTCMOS circuit with both high-threshold and low-threshold MOSFETs, optimization of the low-threshold voltage at which the delay-time of the circuit is independent of operating temperature is described in detail. The validity of the design method is confirmed by the evaluation of a gate-chain TEG and a 1-V 12 K-gate digital-filter LSI fabricated with o.5-µm MTCMOS technology.

    Stable phase locked states" are found amongst the equiliblia of the phasor model known as a generalized Hopfield model having complex-valued local states on the unit circle with centre at the origin. The asynchronous updating rule is assumed, and the energy decreasing characteristic is used to investigate a property of the equilibrium states. Some of the equilibria are shown to be fragile" in the sense that the energy is not locally convex. It is also shown that the local convexity of the energy is assured by a sort of consistency between the equilibrium and the connection weights.

    To enhance fabrication yield for processor arrays, many reconfiguration schemes for replacing faulty processing elements (PE's) with spare PE's have been proposed. An array grid model based on single-tracks is one of such models. For this model, some algorithms for reconfiguring processor arrays have been proposed. However, an algorithm which can reconfigure the array, whenever the array is reconfigurable, has not been proposed yet. This paper presents two types of methods for reconfiguration of processor arrays. Both the types use indirect replacements for reconfiguring arrays. For an indirect replacement of a faulty non-spare PE, one has a fixed direction, the other has at most four directions among which one is chosen. For the former, we consider the several distribution of spare PE's, and computer simulations show a tendency in the term of difference in the distributions. The latter algorithms consist of two phases. In the first phase, rows and columns of spare PE's are decided in accordance with a rule. Several rules for deciding spare PE's are considered in this paper. In the second phase, faulty non-spare PE's are replaced with healthy spare PE's. By simulations the performance of the algorithms are evaluated and a tendency is shown in the terms of difference in disposition of spare PE's.

  • Self-Organization of Spatio-Temporal Visual Receptive

    A self-organizing neural network model of spatio-temporal visual receptive fields is proposed. It consists of a one-layer linear learning network with multiple temporal input channels, and each temporal channel has different impulse response. Every weight of the learning network is modified according to a Hebb-type learning algorithm proposed by Sanger. It is shown by simulation studies that various types of spatio-temporal receptive fields are self-organized by the network with random noise inputs. Some of them have similar response characteristics to X- and Y-type cells found in mammalian retina. The properties of receptive fields obtained by the network are analyzed theoretically. It is shown that only circularly symmetric receptive fields change their spatio-temporal characteristics depending on the bias of inputs. In particular, when the inputs are non-zero mean, the temporal properties of center-surround type receptive fields become heterogeneous and alter depending on the positions in the receptive fields.

    A main result in this paper is that for a Hopfield-type neural circuit with a symmetric connection matrix T, the negative semidenfiniteness of T is a necessary and sufficient condition for absolute exponential stability. While this result extends one of absolute stability in Forti, et al. [1], its proof given in this paper is simpler, which is completed by an approach different from one used in Forti et al. [1]. The most significant consequence is that the class of neural networks with negative semidefinite matrices T is the largest class of symmetric networks that can be employed for embedding and solving optimization problem with global exponential rate of convergence to the optimal solution and without the risk of spurious responses.

    To improve the efficiency for the threshold schemes, the major problem is that the secret shadows cannot be reused after renewing or recovering the shared secret. However, if the secret shadows cannot be reused, the established threshold scheme is limited to be used only once. It is inefficient to reconstruct the whole secret sharing system. Therefore, we introduce an efficient dynamic threshold scheme. In the new scheme, the shadowholders can reuse the secret shadows no matter that the shared secret is renewed or recovered. In addition, the new scheme provides a way by which the dealer can renew the shared secret or reconstruct the secret sharing system, efficiently. Therefore, this scheme is good for maintaining the important secrets.

  • An Experimental Field Trial of PON Based Digital CATV Network

    A CATV network which has a switched double star configuration, fiber to the home (FTTH) and full digital transmission has been tested to see the feasibility with one Head-End (HE), one Central Office (CO), one Distribution Center (DC), and 25 subscribers. Also POTS and NISDN services have been provided to 5 subscribers. Single mode optical fibers are fully deployed from a HE to subscribers. A PON with TDM/polling scheme has been implemented considering the economic issue. Also in the outside plant, we tried to use the existing facility including the in-house duct. This paper deals with the results of the trial and some issues on the operational view.

  • Multimedia Database Systems for the Contents Mediator

    Multimedia Database Systems as the tool to extract and generate additional values from multimedia 'Contents' are discussed in this paper with putting emphasis on the mediator functions between users and contents. Firstly, we discuss about 'what to do' from the view point of four promising contents sources: 'on the network,' 'in the digital broadcasting' 'in the library' and 'in the real world.' From this view pont, four types of multimedia database systems are defined. 'What to do' for each database system is also discussed. Two concrete multimedia database systems with unique mediator functions, stream-type multimedia database platform GOLS and the intelligent access and authoring system using multiple media synchronization are proposed with experimental evaluation results and concrete multimedia database applications.

    This paper presents a vision-based human interface system that enables a user to move a target object in a 3D CG world by moving his hand. The system can interpret hand motions both in a frame fixed in the world and a frame attached to the user. If the latter is chosen, the user can move the object forward by moving his hand forward even if he has changed his body position. In addition, the user does not have to keep in mind that his hand is in the camera field of view. The active camera system tracks the user to keep him in its field of view. Moreover, the system does not need any camera calibration. The key for the realization of the system with such features is vision algorithms based on the multiple view affine invariance theory. We demon-strate an experimental system as well as the vision algorithms. Human operation experiments show the usefulness of the system.

  • Analysis of Communication Behaviors in ISDN-TV Model Conferences Using Synchronous and Asynchronous Speech Transmission

    Intricate Speech Communication Mode (I-SC Mode) is observed in verbal interaction during ISDN-TV conferencing. It is characterized by conflicts and multiple interactions of speech. I-SC Mode might cause mental stress to participants and be obstacles for smooth communication. However, the reasons of I-SC Mode on the environment of information transmission are hitherto unknown. Furthermore, analyses on the talks inside a conference site (LT: local talk or a talk inside a local site) and between remote sites (MT: media talk or a talk between remote sites) are originally conceived on assumed differences in cognitive distance and media intimacy. This study deals with communication effects/barriers and cognitive distance/intimacy of media correlated with audio-video transmission signals and speech modes or talk types and response delay in human speech interactions by using an innovated conference model (decision-making transaction model: DT-Model) in synchronous ISDN-TV conference systems (SYN) and asynchronous ones (ASYN). The effects of intricate communication can be predicted to a certain extent and in some ways. In I-SC Mode, because a timely answer can not be received from recipients (or partner), response time delay and response rate are analyzed. These factors are thus analyzed with an innovated dynamic model, where the recognizable acceptance of delay is evaluated. The nonlinear model shows that the larger the response time delay, the lower the response rate becomes. Comparing the response rate between SYN and ASYN, the latter is notably lower than the former. This indicates that the communication efficiency is lower in ASYN. An I-SC Mode is the main mode that occurs during ASYN conferences, and this in turn causes psychological stress. Statistics show the prevalence of a high incidence of complicated plural talks and a low response rate exists as the main factors preventing smooth human-to-human communication. Furthermore, comparing the response delays in face-to-face LT (Tf) and machine-mediated MT (Tm), human communication delay is significantly extended by the effects of initial mechanical delays. Therefore, cognitive intimacy of media is clearly affected by the existence of physical distance.

  • An Automated Thresholding Approach for Segmenting Deteriorated SEM Images in X-Ray Mask Visual Inspection

    The most troublesome problem in automated X-ray mask inspection is how to exactly determine the threshold level for extracting the pattern portions of each scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image. An exact determination is difficult because the histogram shows, in most cases, a complicated multi-modal pattern and the true threshold level often varies with each successive image. This paper presents a novel thresholding approach for segmenting SEM images of X-ray masks. In this approach, the shape of the histogram of each image is iteratively analyzed until a threshold value minimizing the cost of the correspondence with a reference histogram and satisfying criteria for determining thresholds is obtained. This new approach is used in an automated inspection system. When the input image resolution is set to 0.05µm/pixel, experiments confirm 0.1µm defects are unfailingly detected.

  • Improving the Hopfield Model for TSP Feasible Solutions by Synapse Dynamical Systems

    It is well known that the Hopfield Model (HM) for neural networks to solve the TSP suffers from three major drawbacks: (D1) it can converge to non-optimal local minimum solutions; (D2) it can also converge to non-feasible solutions; (D3) results are very sensitive to the careful tuning of its parameters. A number of methods have been proposed to overcome (D1) well. In contrast, work on (D2) and (D3) has not been sufficient; techniques have not been generalized to larger classes of optimization problems with constraint including the TSP. We first construct Extended HMs (E-HMs) that overcome both (D2) and (D3). The extension of the E-HM lies in the addition of a synapse dynamical system cooperated with the corrent HM unit dynamical system. It is this synapse dynamical system that makes the TSP constraint hold at any final states for whatever choices of the HM parameters and an initial state. We then generalize the E-HM further into a network that can solve a larger class of continuous optimization problems with a constraint equation where both of the objective function and the constraint function are non-negative and continuously differentiable.

  • Information Geometry of Mean Field Theory

    The mean field theory has been recognized as offering an efficient computational framework in solving discrete optimization problems by neural networks. This paper gives a formulation based on the information geometry to the mean field theory, and makes clear from the information-theoretic point of view the meaning of the mean field theory as a method of approximating a given probability distribution. The geometrical interpretation of the phase transition observed in the mean field annealing is shown on the basis of this formulation. The discussion of the standard mean field theory is extended to introduce a more general computational framework, which we call the generalized mean field theory.
