    The maintenance of a system on a ship has limitations when the ship is engaged in a voyage because of limited maintenance resources. When a system fails, it is either repaired instantly on ship with probability p or remains unrepaired during the voyage with probability 1-p owing to the lack of maintenance resources. In the latter case, the system is repaired after the voyage. We propose two management policies for the overhaul interval of an IFR system: one manages the overhaul interval by number of voyages and the other manages it by the total voyage time. Our goal is to determine the optimal policy that ensures the required availability of the system and minimizes the expected cost rate.

  • Design of Miniaturized and Bandwidth-Enhanced Implantable Antenna on Dielectric/Ferrite Substrate for Wireless Biotelemetry

    A miniaturized and bandwidth-enhanced implantable antenna is designed for wireless biotelemetry in the medical implantable communications service (MICS) frequency band of 402-405MHz. To reduce the antenna size and enhance the available bandwidth with regard to the reflection coefficients, a meandered planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) structure is adopted on a dielectric/ferrite substrate which is an artificial magneto-dielectric material. The potential of the proposed antenna for the intended applications is verified through prototype fabrication and measurement with a 2/3 human muscle phantom. Good agreement is observed between the simulation and measurement in terms of resonant characteristics and gain radiation patterns; the bandwidth is enhanced in comparison with that of the ferrite-removed antenna, and antenna gain of -27.7dB is obtained in the measurement. Allowances are made for probable fabrication inaccuracies and practical operating environments. An analysis of 1-g SAR distribution is conducted to confirm compliance with the specific absorption rate limitation (1.6W/kg) of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

    The write operations on emerging Non-Volatile Memory (NVM), such as NAND Flash and Phase Change Memory (PCM), usually incur high access latency, and are required to be optimized. In this paper, we propose Asymmetric Read-Write (ARW) policies to minimize the write traffic sent to NVM. ARW policies exploit the asymmetry costs of read and write operations, and make adjustments on the insertion policy and hit-promotion policy of the replacement algorithm. ARW can reduce the write traffic to NVM by preventing dirty data blocks from frequent evictions. We evaluate ARW policies on systems with PCM as main memory and NAND Flash as disk. Simulation results on an 8-core multicore show that ARW adopted on the last-level cache (LLC) can reduce write traffic by more than 15% on average compared to LRU baseline. When used on both LLC and DRAM cache, ARW policies achieve an impressive reduction of 40% in write traffic without system performance degradation. When employed on the on-disk buffer of the Solid State Drive (SSD), ARW demonstrates significant reductions in both write traffic and overall access latency. Moreover, ARW policies are lightweight, easy to implement, and incur negligible storage and runtime overhead.

    The purpose of this study was to identify the key variables that determine the quality of the auditory environment, for the purposes of workplace auditory design and assessment. To this end, we characterized changes in oscillatory neural activity in electroencephalographic (EEG) data recorded from subjects who performed an intellectual activity while exposed to fluctuating ambient noise. Seven healthy men participated in the study. Subjects performed a verbal and spatial task that used the 3-back task paradigm to study working memory. During the task, subjects were presented with auditory stimuli grouped by increasing high-frequency content: (1) a sound with frequencies similar to Brownian noise and no modulation; (2) an amplitude-modulated sound with frequencies similar to white noise; (3) amplitude-modulated pink noise; and (4) amplitude-modulated Brownian noise. Upon presentation, we observed a characteristic change in three EEG bands: theta (4-8Hz), alpha (8-13Hz), and beta (13-30Hz). In particular, a frequency-dependent enhancement and reduction of power was observed in the theta and beta bands, respectively.

    Case studies have reported that pedestrian detection methods using vehicle radar are not complete systems because each system has specific limitations at the cost of the calculating amounts, the system complexity or the range resolution. In this letter, we proposed a novel pedestrian detection method by template matching using Gabor filter bank, which was evaluated based on the data observed by 24GHz UWB radar.

    This letter proposes a Light Space Partitioned Shadow Maps (LSPSMs) algorithm which implements shadow rendering based on a novel partitioning scheme in light space. In stead of splitting the view frustum like traditional Z-partitioning methods, we split partitions from the projection of refined view frustum in light space. The partitioning scheme is performed dual-directionally while limiting the wasted space. Partitions are created in dynamic number corresponding to the light and view directions. Experiments demonstrate that high quality shadows can be rendered in high efficiency with our algorithm.

    This paper presents a novel method for unsupervised segmentation of objects with large displacements in high speed video sequences. Our general framework introduces a new foreground object predicting method that finds object hypotheses by encoding both spatial and temporal features via a semantic motion signature scheme. More specifically, temporal cues of object hypotheses are captured by the motion signature proposed in this paper, which is derived from sparse saliency representation imposed on magnitude of optical flow field. We integrate semantic scores derived from deep networks with location priors that allows us to directly estimate appearance potentials of foreground hypotheses. A unified MRF energy functional is proposed to simultaneously incorporate the information from the motion signature and semantic prediction features. The functional enforces both spatial and temporal consistency and impose appearance constancy and spatio-temporal smoothness constraints directly on the object hypotheses. It inherently handles the challenges of segmenting ambiguous objects with large displacements in high speed videos. Our experiments on video object segmentation benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for segmenting high speed objects despite the complicated scene dynamics and large displacements.

    An alignment control system using beam-tilting 1-D arrays for a 120-GHz-band corporate-feed 2-D waveguide-slot array antenna is presented. The 2-D waveguide-slot array antenna transmits data, and the 1-D arrays are used to determine array alignment. We design two types of 1-D array antenna and fabricate a corporate-feed 2-D waveguide-slot array antenna surrounded by four beam-tilting 1-D arrays. We then construct an alignment control system and evaluate the performance of the control. We find that the angular accuracy of the antenna alignment control was within ±1deg.

    This paper addresses the issue of source retrieval in plagiarism detection. The task of source retrieval is retrieving all plagiarized sources of a suspicious document from a source document corpus whilst minimizing retrieval costs. The classification-based methods achieved the best performance in the current researches of source retrieval. This paper points out that it is more important to cast the problem as ranking and employ learning to rank methods to perform source retrieval. Specially, it employs RankBoost and Ranking SVM to obtain the candidate plagiarism source documents. Experimental results on the dataset of PAN@CLEF 2013 Source Retrieval show that the ranking based methods significantly outperforms the baseline methods based on classification. We argue that considering the source retrieval as a ranking problem is better than a classification problem.

    We address the problem of measuring matching similarity in terms of template matching. A novel method called two-side agreement learning (TAL) is proposed which learns the implicit correlation between two sets of multi-dimensional data points. TAL learns from a matching exemplar to construct a symmetric tree-structured model. Two points from source set and target set agree to form a two-side agreement (TA) pair if each point falls into the same leaf cluster of the model. In the training stage, unsupervised weak hyper-planes of each node are learned at first. After then, tree selection based on a cost function yields final model. In the test stage, points are propagated down to leaf nodes and TA pairs are observed to quantify the similarity. Using TAL can reduce the ambiguity in defining similarity which is hard to be objectively defined and lead to more convergent results. Experiments show the effectiveness against the state-of-the-art methods qualitatively and quantitatively.

    In this paper, we propose a novel placement algorithm for mixed-grained reconfigurable architectures (MGRAs). MGRA consists of coarse-grained and fine-grained clusters, in order to implement a combined digital systems of high-speed data paths with multi-bit operands and random logic circuits for state machines and bit-wise operations. For accelerating simulated annealing based FPGA placement algorithm, range limiter has been proposed to control the distance of two blocks to be interchanged. However, it is not applicable to MGRAs due to the heterogeneous structure of MGRAs. Proposed range limiter using connection bounding box effectively keeps the size of range limiter to encourage moves across fine-grain blocks in non-adjacent clusters. From experimental results, the proposed method achieved 47.8% reduction of cost in the best case compared with conventional methods.

    A black mask (BM) is a layer used to improve the display quality by suppressing light leakage. In general, the BM is formed by a photolithography process. In this study, a novel technique for the fabrication of a quasi-black mask (q-BM) is proposed; the q-BM was composed of vertical and hybrid orientation areas, patterned by a separation coating technique using an electro-spray deposition method. Using our technique, the q-BM can be formed easily without the additional masks used for the BM.

    We investigate the influence of launching conditions on misalignment tolerance of pluggable ballpoint-pen interconnects, where graded-index plastic optical fibers (GI POFs) are coupled with ball lenses mounted on their end faces. The lateral-misalignment tolerance of the ballpoint-pen connector decreased with an increase in the driving current of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) under the center launching condition. This was attributed to the VCSEL multimode oscillation, which increased the connector coupling loss through the higher-order guided mode launching in the GI POF and the resulting output beam expansion in the ballpoint-pen connector. The driving-current dependence of the connector coupling loss could be decreased using offset launchings. For a radial launching offset of 20µm, we could obtain coupling losses below 1dB for lateral coupling offsets of ±50µm with little dependence on the driving current. This suggests that data transmission quality for misaligned connection of the GI POFs can be improved further by optimizing launching systems for the ballpoint-pen interconnects.

    This paper proposes an address power reduction method for plasma display panels (PDPs) using subfield data smoothing based on a visual masking effect. High-resolution, high-frame-rate PDPs have large address power loss caused by parasitic capacitance. Although the address power is reduced by smoothing the subfield data, noise is generated. The proposed method reduces the address power while maintaining the image quality by choosing the smoothing area of the address data based on the visual masking effect. The results of subjective assessment for the images based on smoothed address data indicate that image quality is maintained.

    To efficiently utilize storage resources, the in-network caching system of Information-Centric Networking has to deal with the popularity of huge content chunks which could cause large memory consumption. This paper presents a Popularity Monitoring based Gain-aware caching scheme, called PMG, which is an integrated design of cache placement and popularity monitoring. In PMG, by taking into account both the chunk popularity and the consumption saving of single cache hit, the cache placement process is transformed into a weighted popularity comparison, while the chunks with high cache gain are placed on the node closer to the content consumer. A Bloom Filter based sliding window algorithm, which is self-adaptive to the dynamic request rate, is proposed to capture the chunks with higher caching gain by Inter-Reference Gap (IRG) detection. Analysis shows that PMG can drastically reduce the memory consumption of popularity monitoring, and the simulation results confirm that our scheme can achieve popularity based cache placement and get better performance in terms of bandwidth saving and cache hit ratio when content popularity changes dynamically.

    We developed flexible LC devices using coat-debond polyimide substrates with a low birefringence and etched post spacers, and clarified that flexible LCDs using post spacers with small spacer distance have a high flexibility without degradation of the image quality. This result ensured the feasibility of flexible LCDs using coat-debond method.

    We have proposed composite films composed of a molecular-aligned polymer and liquid crystal (LC) for substrate-free liquid crystal displays with high-contrast images. We successfully controlled the molecular alignment of the LC and formed molecular-aligned LC droplets in the polymer by controlling the fluidity of the LC/monomer mixture and the curing rate of the monomer.

    In the present paper we show how to obtain rapidly the spectral BRDF and BTDF of different display components or transparent displays using Fourier optics system under different illumination configurations. Results can be used to simulate the entire structure of a LCD display or to predict transparent display performances under various illuminations.

    This article presents efficient strategies for evacuating from an unknown affected area in a plane. Evacuation is the process of movement away from a threat or hazard such as natural disasters. Consider that one or n(n ≥ 3) agents are lost in an unknown convex region P. The agents know neither the boundary information of P nor their positions. We seek competitive strategies that can evacuate the agent from P as quickly as possible. The performance of the strategy is measured by a competitive ratio of the evacuation path over the shortest path. We give a 13.812-competitive spiral strategy for one agent, and prove that it is optimal among all monotone and periodic strategies by showing a matching lower bound. Also, we give a new competitive strategy EES for n(n ≥ 3) agents and adjust it to be more efficient with the analysis of its performance.

  • Low Cost, High Performance of Coplanar Waveguide Fabricated by Screen Printing Technology Open Access

    This paper presents an innovative fabrication process for a planar circuits at millimeter-wave frequency. Screen printing technology provides low cost and high performance coplanar waveguides (CPW) lines in planar devices operated at millimeter-wave frequency up to 110GHz. Printed transmission lines provide low insertion losses of 0.30dB/mm at 110GHz and small return loss like as impedance standard lines. In the paper, Multiline Thru-Reflect-Line (TRL) calibration was also demonstrated by using the impedance standard substrates (ISS) fabricated by screen printing. Regarding calibration capability validation, verification devices were measured and compare the results to the result obtained by the TRL calibration using commercial ISS. The comparison results obtained by calibration of screen printing ISS are almost the same as results measured based on conventional ISS technology.
