  • C-S Thin Films Formed by Plasma CVD

    Thin films of carbon (C)-sulfur (S) compound were formed by plasma CVD (PCVD) at the special chemical condition. The reactor has a parallel plate electrode system and was operated at a discharge frequency of 13.56 MHz with using a mixture gas of argon (Ar), methane (CH4) and SF6. The deposition was performed on a substrate placed on the grounded electrode. Atomic composition of the film was observed to depend on the gas mixture ratio. The sulfur atom density was increased up to 30% with using a mixture gas at a pressure of 0.1 Torr and at a flow rate of 20, 20 and 50 SCCM for Ar, CH4 and SF6, respectively. It was expected that the C-S compounds were deposited under the condition of F atom elimination by forming HF.

    Short-circuit photocurrents (ISC) utilizing surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation were investigated for the merocyanine (MC) LB film photoelectric device. The device has a prism/MgF2/Al/MC LB film/Ag structure. In the attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration, SPPs were resonantly excited at the interfaces between MgF2 and Al (MgF2/Al) and between Ag and air (Ag/air). The thickness and the dielectric constants of the layers were evaluated from the ATR measurements. Short-circuit photocurrents, ISCs, as a function of the incident angle of the laser beam were observed simultaneously during the ATR measurements. In the ISC curves, large and small peaks were observed, and the peak angles of the ISC almost corresponded to the dip angles of the ATR curves due to the SPP excitations. Electric fields and optical absorptions in the cell were calculated using the dielectric constants and the film thickness obtained from the ATR measurements. The calculated absorption in the MC layer as a function of the incident angle corresponded to the ISC curve. It was thought that the optical absorption in the MC layer affected directly to the profile of the ISC. Furthermore, the calculated absorption in the cell with the prism and the MgF2 layer exhibited much larger than that of the cell without them. It was estimated that the photocurrents were enhanced by the excitation of SPPs in the ATR configuration.

    For plasma simulations, we developed a one-dimensional (1d) Object-Oriented Particle-in-Cell code for X11-based Unix workstations (XOOPIC) by modifying the current two-dimensional version which was originally developed by PTSG (Plasma theory and simulation group) in the University of California at Berkeley. We implemented a simplified field solve and current deposition in the code. We retained three components of particle velocity, although the spatial variation for particle position and field components is limited to one dimension. To verify the function of the 1d code, we perform simulations with typical models such as the Child-Langmuir current model and electromagnetic wave propagation in plasma. In both cases, the simulation results quantitatively agree with the theory.

    Photonic crystals have optical properties characterized by photonic bandgap, large anisotropy and high dispersion, which can be applied to various optical devices. We have proposed an autocloning method for fabricating 2D or 3D photonic crystals and are developing novel structures and functions in photonic crystals. The autocloning is an easy process based on the combination of sputter deposition and sputter etching and is suitable for industry. We have already demonstrated devices or functions such as polarization splitters and surface-normal waveguides. In this paper, we describe our latest work on photonic crystals utilizing the autocloning technology. Phase plates and polarization selective gratings for optical pick-ups are demonstrated utilizing TiO2/SiO2 photonic crystals. The technology to introduce CdS into 3D photonic crystals is also developed and photoluminescence from the introduced CdS is observed, which is the first step to realize luminescent devices with 3D confinement or high polarization controllability.

  • Research on Hardware Platform of the Software Radio

    In recent years, the concept of the software radio has been put forward by the international communication society. It is well known that software radio will play an important role in third generation wireless communication systems. But until now there is not an acceptable concept of software radio. How to make software radio be applicable authentically, and how to develop its ascendancy? This paper introduces some new ideas about the key issues of software radio, including software radio architecture and its hardware platform, and it focuses on the design considerations of the hardware platform. Conventional software radio systems use pipeline architecture, which is not scalable and cannot fulfill the inherent requirements of software radios. In this paper a new layer structure of the hardware platform is proposed. It is an open architecture with flexibility and scalability. Then three schemes for hardware platform realization are introduced: bus architecture, switched network architecture, and fat tree architecture. An extensive analysis on advantages and disadvantages of each architecture is given. Then an application example is proposed. The switched network architecture is applied in the cellular wireless communication systems. The basestation is divided into four components according to their functions: antenna, IF, baseband, and control, which are connected by the ATM network. We call this virtualization of wireless communication systems. This will bring great benefits such as fast handoff, easily realization of different macrodiversity algorithm.

  • VLRU: Buffer Management in Client-Server Systems

    In a client-server system, when LRU or its variant buffer replacement strategy is used on both the client and the server, the cache performance on the server side is very poor mainly because of pages duplicated in both systems. This paper introduces a server buffer replacement strategy which uses a replaced page-id than a request page-id, for the primary information for its operations. The importance of the corresponding pages in the server cache is decided according to the replaced page-ids that are delivered from clients to the server, so that locations of the pages are altered. Consequently, if a client uses LRU as its buffer replacement strategy, then the server cache is seen by the client as a long virtual client LRU cache extended to the server. Since the replaced page-id is only sent to the server by piggybacking whenever a new page fetch request is sent, the operation to deliver the replaced page-id is simple and induces a minimal overhead. We show that the proposed strategy reveals good performance characteristics in diverse situations, such as single and multiple clients, as well as with various access patterns.

    Simultaneous wavelength conversion of multi-WDM channels is expected to be a key technique in near-future networks. In this paper, 4-channel wavelength conversion using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a hybrid wavelength selector is successfully demonstrated. The wavelength selector consists of two four-channel spot-size-converter-integrated semiconductor optical amplifier (SS-SOA) gate arrays on a planar-lightwave-circuit (PLC) platform and two PLC-arrayed-waveguide-gratings (AWGs). As the wavelength selector has an individual SS-SOA for the wavelength conversion of each channel, there is negligible interference between channels. Four WDM channels with an 2.5 Gb/s modulation were converted from 1555 to 1575 nm. Clear eye openings and only a small power penalty of less than 0.5 dB were observed. The receiver sensitivity was -31 dBm at a bit error rate (BER) of 10-9.

  • Planar PBG Structures: Basic Properties and Applications

    This paper reviews recent progresses in the research and development of planar photonic band-gap (PBG) structures, also called electromagnetic crystals, for microwave and millimeter-wave applications. Planar electromagnetic crystals are particularly attractive and intensively investigated because of their easy fabrication, low cost, and compatibility with standard planar circuit technology. Two configurations and their applications are described in this paper: a square lattice of holes etched in a ground plane and the recently developed Uniplanar Compact PBG (UC-PBG) structure. Basic properties as well as applications to microwave circuits are reported. These include harmonic tuning in power amplifier, leakage suppression in conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CB-CPW), realization of planar slow-wave structure, and performance improvement in microstrip filters and patch antennas.

  • Mode Extinction Effect on Microstrip Lines when the Thickness of a Conductor with Loss is Decreased

    Printed transmission lines have been extensively examined so far, but results obtained there are all concerned with the waveguiding conductors with no loss and zero thickness, except very few results. We have recently studied the transmission characteristics of printed transmission lines in detail, when the waveguiding conductors have finite conductivity and thickness, and we have found an unexpected effect that we call a "mode extinction effect. " This effect results in significant changes in the dispersion behavior of the printed-transmission-line fundamental mode. For a critical thickness, it may turn out that such transmission line can not use in open structural configuration, but must always be used by putting into a packaging box. In this paper, we discuss thoroughly this important effect and related results from the standpoints of both the dispersion behavior and the vector field plots. We also show the measured results of the attenuation constant.

  • Simultaneous-Propagation Effect in Conductor-Backed Coplanar Strips and Its Experimental Verification

    We first reported the simultaneous-propagation effect that the leaky dominant mode can be present on conductor-backed coplanar strips at the same time as the conventional bound dominant mode. We have investigated here numerically and experimentally this effect in detail. Consequently, we have found that it occurs under a certain condition of structural parameters, and also have verified that it affects circuit performance significantly.

  • Reliability and Availability of a Repairable Lattice System

    A lattice system in this paper is a system whose components are ordered like the elements of (m, n) matrix. A representative example of a lattice system is a connected-(r, s)-out-of-(m, n):F lattice system which is treated as a model of supervision system. It fails if and only if all components in an (r, s) sub lattice fail. We modify the lattice system so as to include a maintenance action and a restriction on the number of failed components. Then, this paper presents availability and MTBF of the repairable system, and reliability when the system stocks spare parts on hand to ensure the specified reliability level.

  • Analytical Investigation of Resonant Frequency of a Microstrip Antenna with Meshed Ground Plane

    In this letter, we propose an approximate calculation formula for the resonant frequency of a microstrip antenna with meshed ground plane, which is derived by perturbational technique and is expressed by a simple closed form. The calculated results are in good agreement with FDTD-calculated and measured ones. Therefore, it is confirmed that the proposed formula is valid for approximate evaluation of the resonant frequency of microstrip antenna with meshed ground plane.

    Mathematical proof for the equivalent edge currents for physical optics (POEECs) is given for plane wave incidence and the observer in far zone; the perfect accuracy of POEECs for plane wave incidence as well as the degradation for the dipole source closer to the scatterer is clearly explained for the first time. POEECs for perfectly conducting plates are extended to those for impedance plates.

  • Cause of Long Spikes for Cyclotron Harmonic Waves in the Ionograms

    The long spikes have been often recorded at the multiples of the electron cyclotron frequency in the ionograms of the topside sounders observed in low latitudes. There has not been sufficient explanation for the physical cause for occourrence of the long spike so far. Here, by interpreting this phenomenon as receiving the trapped cyclotron harmonic wave, some analyses for the length of spike are done not only from the viewpoint of the sweeping property of the frequency spectrum of the transmitted pulse but also from that of the mutual positional relation between the propagation path and the orbit of the sounder. The cause of forming a single spike and a graphical calculation method for the long spike are proposed, respectively. Thus, the cause and the fine structure of long spike consisting of superposed spikes are clarified.

    Distributed shared memory (DSM) systems on top of network of workstations are especially vulnerable to the impact of false sharing because of their higher memory transaction overheads and thus higher false sharing penalties. In this paper we develop a dynamic-granularity shared memory management scheme that eliminates false sharing without sacrificing the transparency to conventional shared-memory applications. Our approach utilizes a special threaded splay tree (TST) for shared memory information management, and a dynamic token-based path-compression synchronization algorithm for data transferring. The combination of the TST and path compression is quite efficient; asymptotically, in an n-processor system with m shared memory segments, synchronizing at most s segments takes O(s log m log n) amortized computation steps and generates O(s log n) communication messages, respectively. Based on the proposed scheme we constructed an experimental DSM prototype which consists of several Ethernet-connected Pentium-based computers running Linux. Preliminary benchmark results on our prototype indicate that our scheme is quite efficient, significantly outperforming traditional schemes and scaling up well.

    A family C of min-wise independent permutations is known to be a useful tool of indexing replicated documents on the Web. For any integer n>0, a family C of permutations on [n]={1,2,. . . ,n} is said to be min-wise independent if for any (nonempty) X [n] and any x X, Pr ( min {π(X)} = π(x))= ||X||-1 when π is chosen uniformly at random from C, where ||A|| is the cardinality of a finite set A. For any integer n>0, it has been known that (1) ||C|| lcm(n,n-1,. . . ,2,1) = en-o(n) for any family C of min-wise independent permutations on [n]; (2) there exists a polynomial time samplable C family of min-wise independent permutations on [n] such that ||C|| 4n. However, it has been unclear whether there exists a min-wise independent family C such that ||C|| = lcm(n,n-1,. . . ,2,1) for each integer n>0 and how to construct such a family C of min-wise independent permutations for each integer n>0 if it exists. In this paper, we shall construct a family Fn of permutations for each integer n>0 and show that Fn is min-wise independent and ||Fn|| = lcm(n,n-1,. . . ,2,1). Moreover, we present a polynomial time sampling algorithm for the family. Thus the family Fn of min-wise independent permutations is optimal in the sense of family size and is easy to implement because of its polynomial time samplability.

  • The 3D-Packing by Meta Data Structure and Packing Heuristics

    The three dimensional (3D) packing problem is to arrange given rectangular boxes in a rectangular box of the minimum volume without overlapping each other. As an approach, this paper introduces the system of three sequences of the box labels, the sequence-triple, to encode the topology of the 3D-packing. The topology is the system of relative relations in pairs of boxes such as right-of, above, front-of, etc. It will be proved that the sequence-triple represents the topology of the tractable 3D-packings which is a 3D-packing such that there is an order of the boxes along which all the boxes are extracted one by one in a certain fixed direction without disturbing other remaining boxes. The idea is extended to the system of five ordered sequences, the sequence-quintuple. A decoding rule is given by which any 3D-packing is represented. These coding systems are applied to design heuristic algorithms by simulated annealing which search the codes for better 3D-packings. Experimental results were very convincing its usefulness as automated packing algorithms.

    This paper analyzes what structural features of graph problems allow efficient parallel algorithms. We survey some parallel algorithms for typical problems on three kinds of graphs, outerplanar graphs, trapezoid graphs and in-tournament graphs. Our results on the shortest path problem, the longest path problem and the maximum flow problem on outerplanar graphs, the minimum-weight connected dominating set problem and the coloring problem on trapezoid graphs and Hamiltonian path and Hamiltonian cycle problem on in-tournament graphs are adopted as working examples.

  • Balance-Unbalance Conversion Characteristics of Untwisted Unbalanced Metallic Pair Lines and Their Application to a Method for Estimating Equivalent Ground Plane

    Metallic pair lines transmitting high-frequency information signals above several tens MHz are often used without being twisted, as flat floor cable installed in buildings, ribbon-type cables installed in computer equipment, and traces in printed circuit boards. However, the conversion characteristics of untwisted unbalanced metallic pair lines connecting unbalanced circuits have not been investigated over a wide range of frequencies in the MHz region. First, we developed a method to estimate effective power conversion factors using a cascade connection of F matrices, where the unbalance in impedance and admittance of each pair line is distributed uniformly along the line. As a result some useful information was obtained about the balance-unbalance conversion characteristics of the effective power which can be used to suppress EMI phenomena in wiring, especially over several decades of high frequencies. Next, we attempted to apply the conversion characteristics of untwisted unbalanced pair lines obtained at frequencies below several MHz to techniques for searching for the return circuits of conductors installed in buildings. It was clarified experimentaly that the depth of the equivalent ground plane can be estimated by comparing the measured conversion values of TV feeder lines installed at the place being tested with reference values measured in advance on a copper plate .
