Shared multibuffer ATM switches are attractive since they can extend memory bandwidth by the use of multiple independent buffer memories. Although the parallel accessibility allows a considerable improvement in memory bandwidth, a proper assignment of memory addresses to cells is necessary to better utilize the potential bandwidth. In this paper, we present an efficient cell placement strategy for shared multibuffer ATM switches. It is based on a combination of two key concepts, uniform distribution for writes and reference locality for reads. The former is to reduce cell loss ratio due to overflow and write-access conflicts. The latter is to have cells destined for the same output port read from the same buffer memory to minimize read-access conflicts. A single threshold is employed to assign memory locations adaptively depending on the cell distribution among the shared buffer memories. The proposed strategy is shown to outperform the existing ones, in terms of cell loss ratio, cell delay, and throughput. Moreover, the performance gains have been made with a simple control circuit.

In order to lead an ongoing software project to success, it is important to flexibly control its dynamically-changing software process. However, it is generally impossible not only to exactly pre-define the production process but also to prescribe the process change process (meta-process). To solve the problem, we have focused on communication between the project staff through which process change requests presented by individuals can be immediately shared, designed, verified, validated and implemented. This paper proposes a communication model which can represent a wide variety of communication states between the project manager and developers discussing how to implement process change requests. The communication model has been derived by investigating the sort of process change requests and, based on the model, we have implemented a cooperative process planning system (called CooPs). CooPs is a communication environment designed for software projects and supports information sharing for discussing the process change requests. By using CooPs, the software project can flexibly deal with not only expected change requests but also unexpected ones. To evaluate the applicability of the communication model and the capabilities of CooPs, we have conducted an experiment which is an application of CooPs to the ISPW6 example problem. This paper describes the concepts of CooPs, the system implementation, and the experiment.

This paper gives a detailed presentation of a "vision chip" for a very fast detection of motion vectors. The chip's design consists of a parallel pixel array and column parallel block-matching processors. Each pixel of the pixel array contains a photo detector, an edge detector and 4 bits of memory. In the detection of motion vectors, first, the gray level image is binarized by the edge detector and subsequently the binary edge data is used in the block matching processor. The block-matching takes place locally in pixel and globally in column. The chip can create a dense field of motion where a vector is assigned to each pixel by overlapping 2 2 target blocks. A prototype with 16 16 pixels and four block-matching processors has been designed and implemented. Preliminary results obtained by the prototype are shown.

High-speed collision detection is important to realize a highly-safe intelligent vehicle. In collision detection, high-computational power is required to perform matching operation between discrete points on surfaces of a vehicle and obstacles in real-world environment. To achieve the highest performance, a hierarchical matching scheme is proposed based on two representations: the coarse representation and the fine representation. A vehicle is represented as a set of rectangular solids in the fine representation (fine rectangular solids), and the coarse representation, which is also a set of rectangular solids, is produced by enlarging the fine representation. If collision occurs between an obstacle discrete point and a rectangular solid in the coarse representation (coarse rectangular solid), then it is sufficient to check the only fine rectangular solids contained in the coarse one. Consequently, checks for the other fine rectangular solids can be omitted. To perform the hierarchical matching operation in parallel, a hierarchically-content-addressable memory (HCAM) is proposed. Since there is no need to perform matching operation in parallel with fine rectangular solids contained in different coarse ones, the fine ones are mapped onto a matching unit. As a result, the number of matching units can be reduced without decreasing the performance. Under the condition of the same execution time, the area of the HCAM is reduced to 46.4% in comparison with that of the conventional CAM in which the hierarchical matching scheme is not used.

Precise plastic V-grooved alignment parts for connecting single-mode optical fiber arrays to multi-port optical devices were successfully molded with a thermosetting resin by using a highly productive injection molding technique. The molded parts are two types of V-grooved blocks that are compatible with the size of optical devices having eight or twelve optical ports. Their dimensional accuracy must be better than 1 µm over the whole length of the V-grooves for efficient optical coupling. This strict requirement was satisfied using precisely processed molding tools with a specially chosen resin under optimum molding conditions. The feasibility of the optical alignment parts was assured by an evaluation of their loss characteristics and reliability in coupling single-mode fibers to 18 power splitters, where the average optical loss was 0.2 dB and the change in loss was less than 0.2 dB under a temperature cycling test and also under a damp heat test. These results show that plastic molded parts can be used for precise coupling of single-mode optical devices, and will lead to a breakthrough in innovation in the field of optical packaging.

A problem in image recognition in practical circumstances is that an observed image is often degraded by an imaging system. A conventional method in such a case is first to estimate the parameters of the imaging system and then restore the image before analysis. Here, we propose an alternative approach based on phase invariants in Fourier domain that needs no restoration and is fairly robust against both blur and noise. We show that the image phases in positive region of the Fourier transform of the point spread function (PSF) are blur-invariant provided that the PSF is central symmetric. Under the phase-invariant assumption, a phase correlation function between a standard image and the degraded image is used in developing the recognition algorithm. The effectiveness of this algorithm is demonstrated through experiments using ten classes of figure images from car license plates.

Recent status of the polymer optical fiber (POF) for high speed data communication and telecommunication is reviewed. The GI POF was proposed for the first time 20 years ago at Keio University, and several methodologies to fabricate GI POF have been currently proposed worldwide. In this paper, we both theoretically and experimentally verify that the most transparent GI POF can be obtained by the polymer-dopant system. The relation between the refractive index profile and the dispersion characteristics of the GI POF was quantitatively clarified. The refractive index profile of the GI POF obtained by the interfacial-gel polymerization process was controlled to enable to transmit the order of gigabit per second bit rate. Furthermore, the accurate approximation of the refractive index profile and consideration of mode dependent attenuation enabled to precisely predict the dispersion characteristics of the GI POF.

Authentication protocols are necessary for the receiver of a message to ascertain its origin in a distributed environment. Since they exchange cryptographic messages at the beginning of communication, their security is an essential requirement. However, most of the protocols have suffered from several kinds of attacks. A replay attack is one kind of those attacks. Attackers could launch it easily by replaying an eavesdropped message. Moreover, there are many types of replay attacks while most of the formal methods are not capable of detecting them. [3] classified various kinds of replay attacks and proposed a taxonomy. Therefore, it is necessary to verify authentication protocols deliberately with such a taxonomy for a basis. In this paper, at first, we give a clear definition and several remarks on replay attacks. Secondly we review the taxonomy of replay attacks presented in [3], and comment on its minor mistake. Finally we examine on the basis of the taxonomy the password-based authentication protocol, K1P, which was proposed in our earlier papers for protecting weak secrets efficiently. As a result of the examination, we have found that three way mutual K1P shown in [2] was vulnerable to one of replay attacks. Therefore, we improve three way K1P on security against the replay attack. Improved three way K1P is secure against replay attacks as well as guessing attacks and therefore it may be useful for security services of various communication networks.

In this paper, a general formula of disparity estimation based on Bayesian Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) algorithm is derived and implemented with simplified probabilistic models. The formula is the generalized probabilistic diffusion equation based on Bayesian model, and can be implemented into some different forms corresponding to the probabilistic models in the disparity neighborhood system or configuration. The probabilistic models are independence and similarity among the neighboring disparities in the configuration. The independence probabilistic model guarantees the discontinuity at the object boundary region, and the similarity model does the continuity or the high correlation of the disparity distribution. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm had good estimation performance. This result showes that the derived formula generalizes the probabilistic diffusion based on Bayesian MAP algorithm for disparity estimation. Also, the proposed probabilistic models are reasonable and approximate the pure joint probability distribution very well with decreasing the computations to O(n()) from O(n()4) of the generalized formula.

60 GHz band conical beam radial line slot antennas (RLSA's) are designed and fabricated. Antennas are made of PTFE substrate with copper for high accuracy and mass producibility in millimeter wave frequency. The radiation pattern such as directivity and beam direction can be controlled by changing the excitation of slots. The measured radiation pattern is in reasonable agreement with the predicted one in main beam direction. The measured gain is about 2.5 dB smaller than the predicted gain.

Thin-film slot-array receiving antennas fed by coplanar waveguide (CPW) were fabricated on fused quartz substrates, and the antenna properties were investigated at 700 GHz. It was confirmed that the transmission efficiency of CPW was 0.83/λm, and the rate of radiated power from a slot antenna was 0.5 at 700 GHz. The fabricated antennas worked as expected from the theory based on the transmission line model, and the two-dimensional 83 slot-array antenna fed by CPW increased the power gain by 11 dB over a single-slot antenna. The power gain of the antenna was 13 dBi and the aperture efficiency was 40% when the 700 GHz-submillimeter wave was irradiated through the substrate.

This paper suggests a new type of 180-degree 3 dB hybrid, which consists of a cylindrical cavity and four E-plane rectangular waveguides radially coupled with it, and shows that good hybrid properties are realized by modifying the positions of the four input/output waveguides and the radius of the cylindrical cavity that are determined by the field distribution of the TE111 resonant mode. Moreover, a method of broadening the bandwidth with additional impedance steps is described. The present hybrid is marked by simple structure, and hence is useful for applications at millimeter wave frequencies and to high-power microwave systems. Experimental verification is additionally shown.

This paper outlines the modeling requirements of integrated circuit (IC) fabrication processes that have lead to and sustained the development of computer-aided design of technology (i. e. TCAD). Over a period spanning more than two decades the importance of TCAD modeling and the complexity of required models has grown steadily. The paper also illustrates typical applications where TCAD has been powerful and strategic to IC scaling of processes. Finally, the future issues of atomic-scale modeling and the need for an hierarchical approach to capture and use such detailed information at higher levels of simulation are discussed.

In this paper, near real time digital radiography system was implemented for the automatic verification of local errors between simulation plan and radiation therapy. Portal image could be acquired through video camera, image board and PC after therapy radiation was converted into light by a metal/fluorescent screen. Considering the divergence according to the distance between the source and the plate, we made a 340 340 12 cm3 basis point plate on which five rods of 4 cm height and 8 mm diameter lead (Pb) were built to display reference points on the simulator and the portal image. We converted the portal image into the binary image using the optimal threshold value which was gotten through the histogram analysis of the acquired portal image using the basis point plate. we got the location information of the iso-center and basis points from the binary image, and removed the systematic errors which were from the differences between the simulation plan and the portal image. Field size which was measured automatically by optimal threshold portal image, was verified with simulation plan. Anatomic errors were automatically detected and verified with the normalized simulation and the portal image by pattern matching method after irradiating a part of the radiation. Therapy efficiency was improved and radiation side effects were reduced by these techniques, so exact radiation treatment are expected.

Regular ternary logic functions are one of the most useful special classes of Kleenean functions, and a lot of research has been done on them. However, there has been little work done on incompletely specified regular ternary logic functions. This paper describes the following points: (1) Minimization of incompletely specified regular ternary logic functions. (2) A new definition of incompletely specified fuzzy switching functions and their minimization. (Concretely speaking, minimal disjunctive forms of incompletely specified fuzzy switching functions are represented in formulas of regular ternary logic functions. ) (3) Their application to fuzzy logic circuits such as fuzzy PLAs of AND-OR type.
