A method for bandwidth enhancement of radar cross section (RCS) reduction by metasurfaces was studied. Scattering cancellation is one of common methods for reducing RCS of target scatterers. It occurs when the wave scattered by the target scatterer and the wave scattered by the canceling scatterer are the same amplitude and opposite phase. Since bandwidth of scattering cancellation is usually narrow, we proposed the bandwidth enhancement method using metasurfaces, which can control the frequency dependence of the scattering phase. We designed and fabricated a metasurface composed of a patch array on a grounded dielectric substrate. Numerical and experimental evaluations confirmed that the metasurface enhances the bandwidth of 10dB RCS reduction by 52% bandwidth ratio of the metasurface from 34% bandwidth ratio of metallic cancelling scatterers.

Dependences of arc duration D and contact gap at arc extinction d on contact opening speed v are studied for break arcs generated in a 48VDC resistive circuit at constant contact opening speeds. The opening speed v is varied over a wide range from 0.05 to 0.5m/s. Circuit current while electrical contacts are closed I0 is varied to 10A, 20A, 50A, 100A, 200A, and 300A. The following results were obtained. For each current I0, the arc duration D decreased with increasing contact opening speed v. However, the D at I0=300A was shorter than that at I0=200A. On the other hand, the contact gap at arc extinction d tended to increase with increasing the I0. However, the d at I0=300A was shorter than that at I0=200A. The d was almost constant with increasing the v for each current I0 when the I0 was lower than 200A. However, the d became shorter when the v was slower at I0=200A and 300A. At the v=0.05m/s, for example, the d at I0=300A was shorter than that at I0=100A. To explain the cause of the results of the d, in addition, arc length just before extinction L were analyzed. The L tended to increase with increasing current I0. The L was almost constant with increasing the v when the I0 was lower than 200A. However, when I0=200A and 300A, the L tended to become longer when the v was slower. The characteristics of the d will be discussed using the analyzed results of the L and motion of break arcs. At higher currents at I0=200A and 300A, the shorter d at the slowest v was caused by wide motion of the arc spots on contact surfaces and larger deformation of break arcs.

This paper proposes a dual-polarized metasurface that utilizes multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for radar cross-section (RCS) reduction in the 28GHz band of the quasi-millimeter band. MLCCs are very small in size; therefore, miniaturization of the unit cell structure of the metamaterial can be expected, and the MLCCs can be periodically loaded onto a narrow object. First, the MLCC structure was modeled as a basic structure, and the effective permeability of the MLCC was determined to investigate the influence of the arrangement direction on MLCC interaction. Next, the unit cell structure of the dual-polarized metasurface was designed for an MLCC set on a dielectric substrate. By analyzing the infinite periodic structure and finite structure, the monostatic reduction characteristics, oblique incidence characteristics, and dual-polarization characteristics of the proposed metasurface were evaluated. In the case of the MLCCs arranged in the same direction, the monostatic RCS reduction was approximately 30dB at 29.8GHz, and decreased when the MLCCs were arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The monostatic RCS reductions for the 5 × 5, 10 × 10, and 20 × 20 divisions were roughly the same, i.e., 10.8, 9.9, and 10.3dB, respectively. Additionally, to validate the simulated results, the proposed dual-polarized metasurface was fabricated and measured. The measured results were found to approximately agree with the simulated results, confirming that the RCS can be reduced for dual-polarization operation.

This paper introduces a method that identifies human activity from the height and Doppler Radar Cross Section (RCS) information detected by Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar. This method estimates the three-dimensional target location by applying the MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) method to the observed MIMO channel; the Doppler RCS is calculated from the signal reflected from the target. A gesture recognition algorithm is applied to the trajectory of the temporal transition of the estimated human height and the Doppler RCS. In experiments, the proposed method achieves over 90% recognition rate (average).

The existing methods to estimate satellite attitude by using radar cross section (RCS) sequence suffer from problems such as low precision, computation complexity, etc. To overcome these problems, a novel model of satellite attitude estimation by the local maximum points of the RCS sequence is established and can reduce the computational time by downscaling the dimension of the feature vector. Moreover, a particle swarm optimization method is adopted to improve efficiency of computation. Numerical simulations show that the proposed method is robust and efficient.

A method is proposed for improving the accuracy of the characteristic basis function method (CBFM) using the multilevel approach. With this technique, CBFs taking into account multiple scattering calculated for each block (IP-CBFs; improved primary CBFs) are applied to CBFM using a multilevel approach. By using IP-CBFs, the interaction between blocks is taken into account, and thus it is possible to reduce the number of CBFs while maintaining accuracy, even if the multilevel approach is used. The radar cross section (RCS) of a cube, a cavity, and a dielectric sphere were analyzed using the proposed CBFs, and as a result it was found that accuracy is improved over the conventional method, despite no major change in the number of CBFs.

We propose a novel improved characteristic basis function method (IP-CBFM) for accurately analysing the radar cross section (RCS). This new IP-CBFM incorporates the effect of higher-order multiple scattering and has major influences in analyzing monostatic RCS (MRCS) of single incidence and bistatic RCS (BRCS) problems. We calculated the RCS of two scatterers and could confirm that the proposed IP-CBFM provided higher accuracy than the conventional method while significantly reducing the number of CBF.

Radar cross section (RCS) of a patch array antenna is reduced using a switchable absorption/transmission surface. The switchable surface performs as between a radar absorber and transmission surface using diodes at 9GHz. The switchable surface was applied to the radome of a patch array and its radiation pattern and RCS reduction were evaluated. The gain and the radiation pattern with the radome was equivalent to that without the radome. The RCS reduction with the radome was 25dB compared to that without the radome.

The characteristic basis function method using improved primary characteristic basis functions (IP-CBFM) has been proposed as a technique for high-precision analysis of monostatic radar cross section (RCS) of a scattering field in a specific coordinate plane. IP-CBFM is a method which reduces the number of CBF necessary to express a current distribution by combining secondary CBF calculated for each block of the scatterer with the primary CBF to form a single improved primary CBF (IP-CBF). When the proposed technique was evaluated by calculating the monostatic RCS of a perfect electric conductor plate and cylinder, it was found that solutions corresponding well with analysis results from conventional CBFM can be obtained from small-scale matrix equations.

High voltage DC contactors, for operation at voltage levels up to at least about 300,volts, find their increasing markets in applications such as electrical vehicles and aircrafts in which size and weight of cables are of extreme importance. The copper bridge-type contact, cooperated with magnetic field provided by permanent magnets and sealed in an arc chamber filled with high pressure gases, is a mainly used structure to interrupt the DC arc rapidly. Arc characteristic in different gases at different pressure varies greatly. This paper is focused on the arc characteristics of the bridge-type contact system when magnetic field is applied with nitrogen and gas at different pressure. The pressure of the gases varies from 1,atm to 2.5,atm. Arc characteristics, such as arc durations at different stages and arc motions in those gases are comparatively studied. The results are instructive for choosing the suitable arcing atmosphere in a DC bridge-type arc chamber of a contactor.

Bridge-type contacts are mainly used in high voltage direct current contactors for their performance of arc extinguishment and break capacity. It is also easy to add external magnetic field in them to blow the arc. Experiments on the arc behaviors were carried out when a copper bridge-type contact pair opening a 270V resistive circuit in the air. Influences of the shape of the movable contact, the opening speed and the magnetic flux density on the key behaviors, such as the arc duration, the arc re-ignition and the stability of arcing process, were investigated by using an oscilloscope and a high-speed camera. It was revealed that a uniform magnetic field with proper density could extinguish the arc stably and could reduce the arc re-ignition.

Silver electrical contacts are separated to generate break arcs in a DC48 V/6-24 A resistive circuit. The transverse magnetic field formed by a permanent magnet is applied to the break arcs. A series of experiments are carried out for two different experimental conditions. One condition is a constant contact separating speed while the magnetic flux density is changed to investigate the shortening effect of the arc duration. Another condition is a constant magnetic flux density while the contact separating speed is changed to investigate the changes in the arc duration and the contact gap when the break arc is extinguished. As a result, with constant separating speed, it is confirmed that the duration of break arcs is shortened by the transverse magnetic field and the break arcs are extinguished when the arc length reaches a certain value L. Under the condition of constant transverse magnetic field, (i) the arc duration is shortened by increasing the separation speed; (ii) the contact gap when the break arc is extinguished is almost constant when the separating speed v is sufficiently faster than 5 mm/s.

This paper presents the near-field to far-field transformation for an outdoor radar cross section (RCS) range. Direct measurement of the large actual target requires quite a long measurement range. The near-field to far-field RCS transformation method achieves the reduction of measurement range. However the non-uniformity of the incident electric field distribution on the target causes some errors in RCS prediction. We propose a novel near-field to far-field RCS transformation method that can be applied to an outdoor RCS measurement. The non-uniformity of the incident electric field distribution is successfully resolved by introducing the correction term of the ground bounce. We investigate the validity of the proposed method by the simulation and measurement.

Radar Cross Section (RCS) can be obtained from near-field data by using near-field to far-field RCS transformation methods. Phase errors in near-field data cause the degradation of the prediction accuracy. In order to overcome the difficulty, we propose the far-field RCS prediction method from one-dimensional intensity data in near-field. The proposed method is derived by extending the phase retrieval method based on the Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm with the use of the relational expression between near-fields and scattering coefficients. The far-field RCS can be predicted from the intensity data of scattered fields measured at two different ranges. The far-field RCS predicted by the proposed method approximately coincides with the computed one. The proposed method also has significant advantages of simple and efficient algorithm. The proposed method is valuable from a practical point of view.

Petri nets with inhibitor arcs are referred to as inhibitor-arc Petri nets. It is shown that modeling capability of inhibitor-arc Petri nets is equivalent to that of Turing machines. The subject of this paper is the legal firing sequence problem (INLFS) for inhibitor-arc Petri nets: given an inhibitor-arc Petri net IN, an initial marking M0 and a firing count vector X, find a firing sequence δ such that its firing starts from M0 and each transition t appears in δ exactly X(t) times as prescribed by X. The paper is the first step of research for time complexity analysis and designing algorithms of INLFS, one of the most fundamental problems for inhibitor-arc Petri nets having more modeling capability than ordinary Peri nets. The recognition version of INLFS, denoted as RINLFS, means a decision problem, asking a "yes" or "no" answer on the existence of a solution δ to INLFS. The main results are the following (1) and (2). (1) Proving (1-1) and (1-2) when the underlying Petri net of IN is an unweighted state machine: (1-1) INLFS can be solved in pseudo-polynomial (O(|X|)) time for IN of non-adjacent type having only one special place called a rivet; (1-2) RINLFS is NP-hard for IN with at least three rivets; (2) Proving that RINLFS for IN whose underlying Petri net is unweighted and forward conflict-free is NP-hard. Heuristic algorithms for solving INLFS are going to be proposed in separate papers.

Target reconstruction algorithm from its monostatic radar cross section (RCS) has been proposed for polygonal cylinders with curved surfaces. This algorithm is based on our previous finding that the main contribution to the back scattering is due to edge diffracted fields excited at a facet of nearly specular reflection direction. Dimension of this constitutive facet of the target is estimated from the local maxima and its lobe width in the angular RCS variation. Half and quarter circular cylinders are used as canonical scattering objects, and their measured and numerically simulated monostatic RCS values have been studied extensively to find scattering pattern characteristic difference between flat and circularly curved surfaces. Thus estimated constitutive facets are connected in order, and this procedure will be continued until the distance between the first and the final edges would be minimized. Our algorithm has been tested for other targets, and it is found that it works well for predicting metal convex targets with flat and curved facets.

This paper describes two way satellite system environments on geostationary orbit (GEO) and performance enhancement mechanisms which reduces round trip time (RTT) and supports real-time services. We use performance enhancing proxy (PEP) for reducing round trip time and user-level real-time scheduler for reducing deadline violation tasks. The user-level real-time scheduling method classifies priority of user process into four types and those are reflected in kernel. With these dual performance enhancement mechanisms, we can improve quality of service (QoS) of end-user who connects to the DVB-RCS system.

Genetic algorithm (GA) is a widely used numerical technique to simplify some analytical solutions in electromagnetic theory. Genetic algorithms can be combined with the geometric optics method to tackle electromagnetic scattering problems. This paper presents an extrapolation procedure, which derived, as a first step, a functional representation of the radar cross section (RCS) of three different dielectric objects that was computed via the Mie solution or the method of moments (MOM). An algorithm was employed to fit the scattering characteristics of dielectric objects at high frequencies.

A simple non-destructive depth estimation method for a crack on a metal surface has been proposed. This method is based on our finding that the electromagnetic back scattering from a narrow trough (crack model) on the ground plane causes periodical nulls (dips) as the frequency changes, and the first dip occurs when the depth of the crack becomes nearly one half of the incident wavelength. Dependencies of the crack's aperture and the incident angle have also been studied from rigorous and numerical analyses, and considered as our depth estimation parameters. A simple estimation formula for a crack depth has been derived from these studies. Test measurement has been made to check the accuracy of our estimation formula. Time domain gating process is utilized for isolating the crack scattering spectra buried in the measured frequency RCS data. Tested crack types are a narrow rectangular, a tapered, and a stair approximated crack shapes. It is found that the depth of these cracks can be measured within 3 percent error by our estimation method.

To increase the discriminating ability of the speech feature based on linear predictive coding (LPC) and increase its noise robustness, an SNR-dependent arcsin transform is applied to the autocorrelation sequence (ACS) of each analysis frame in a speech signal. Moreover, each component in the ACS is also weighted by the normalized reciprocal of the average magnitude difference function (AMDF) for emphasizing its peak structure. Experimental results for the task of Mandarin digit recognition indicate that the LPC speech feature employing the proposed scheme is more robust than some widely used LPC-based approaches over a wide range of SNR values.
