  • Multilevel Hierarchical Mobility Management in Densely Meshed Networks

    Micromobility management is a key issue for the deployment of broadband mobile communication services. The packet loss during handover and the handover latency need to be minimized to maintain the high quality of these services. We have previously proposed a mobility management scheme that addresses this issue in wide-area mobile networks that employed hierarchical multiple mobility management routers (Mobility Anchor Points or MAPs). Our scheme directs a Mobile Terminal (MT) to a suitable MAP to fully minimize packet loss during handover, and handover latency of the MTs. In our previous work, we confirmed the effectiveness of our scheme using a simple tree network. Actual networks however, always have densely meshed topologies to provide some redundancy for the elimination of single points of failure. In such networks, it is difficult to deduce the relationships between the MAPs, and this makes it difficult for our scheme to select a suitable MAP for an MT, because the selection is performed using both the MT's smoothed speed and the relationships existing between the MAPs located above the Access Router (AR), to which the MT is connected. In this paper, we propose a method to overcome this problem, by autonomously adjusting the selection criteria that are individually configured for use at a particular AR, and we evaluate this method using simulation experiments. The results show that our mobility management scheme works well in densely meshed networks using the proposed additional method.

  • Realtime Hand Posture Estimation with Self-Organizing Map for Stable Robot Control

    The hand posture estimation system by searching a similar image from a vast database, such as our previous research, may cause the increase of processing time, and prevent realtime controlling of a robot. In this study, the authors proposed a new estimation method of human hand posture by rearranging a large-scale database with the Self-Organizing Map including self-reproduction and self-annihilation, which enables two-step searches of similar image with short period of processing time, within small errors, and without deviation of search time. The experimental results showed that our system exhibited good performance with high accuracy within processing time above 50 fps for each image input with a 2.8 GHz CPU PC.

    A microstrip phase shifter design that uses a reconfigurable metal pattern on the EBG ground plate is introduced. The EBG ground plate metal pattern contains a linear array of thin slots with switching devices loaded at the center. This design can vary the phase constant with minimum mismatch loss over a large frequency bandwidth. Several test ground plates without actual switching devices were used to verify the design concept.

    In this paper, a chromatic adaptation model (CAM) based on the dependence on LMS cone responses of the human visual system (HVS) is proposed for TV and PC monitors under a variety of viewing conditions. We derived the proposed CAM based on Breneman's corresponding color data. The results of the experiments were carried out to assess the proposed model performance in terms of color fidelity by comparing complex images on a LCD monitor. We confirmed that the proposed model performed better to predict corresponding colors under various viewing conditions. Therefore, the reproduced colors, which are viewed in real surround viewing conditions, are perceived the same as original object colors, when the proposed CAM was applied to color display devices such as CRT, LCD, and PDP.

    In this paper, the confinement loss of octagonal photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with an isosceles triangle lattice of air-holes are numerically investigated. Taking into account the confinement loss, the mode field diameter (MFD), the effective area (Aeff) and the chromatic dispersion of octagonal PCFs are calculated, compared to conventional hexagonal PCFs. It is found from confinement loss and MFD results that the octagonal PCFs can confine the field strongly than the hexagonal PCFs due to the different air filling fraction. Moreover, it is shown that the octagonal PCFs are obtained not only positive but also negative larger dispersion values and smaller Aeff values compared to the hexagonal PCFs.

    This paper describes a two-dimensional clustering scheme-based analysis of audible noises induced at telephone terminals. To analyze EMI sources that cause telephone-audible noise, we use a self-organizing map, which provides a way to map high-dimensional data onto a two-dimensional domain. Also, in order to discriminate EMI sources without using particular resonance frequencies that have peaks in the frequency domain, we use the energy spectra of telephone-audible noises as input for training the self-organizing map. In applying this method in actual environments, we measured ten kinds of telephone-audible noises (due to Radio waves and cross-talk noises, etc.) and then derived their energy spectra for eight frequency bands: 1-250 Hz, 250-500 Hz, 500-1 kHz, 1 k-1.5 kHz, 1.5 k-2 kHz, 2 k-3 kHz, 3 k-4 kHz, and over 4 kHz. We visually confirmed that the measured telephone-audible noise data could be projected onto the map in accordance with their properties, resulting in a combined depiction of the composition of derived energy spectra in the frequency bands. The proposed method can deal with multi-dimensional parameters, projecting its results onto a two-dimensional space in which the projected data positions give us an effective depiction of EMI sources that cause disturbances at telephone terminals.

  • A Quantum Protocol to Win the Graph Colouring Game on All Hadamard Graphs

    This paper deals with graph colouring games, an example of pseudo-telepathy, in which two players can convince a verifier that a graph G is c-colourable where c is less than the chromatic number of the graph. They win the game if they convince the verifier. It is known that the players cannot win if they share only classical information, but they can win in some cases by sharing entanglement. The smallest known graph where the players win in the quantum setting, but not in the classical setting, was found by Galliard, Tapp and Wolf and has 32,768 vertices. It is a connected component of the Hadamard graph GN with N=c=16. Their protocol applies only to Hadamard graphs where N is a power of 2. We propose a protocol that applies to all Hadamard graphs. Combined with a result of Frankl, this shows that the players can win on any induced subgraph of G12 having 1609 vertices, with c=12. Moreover combined with a result of Godsil and Newman, our result shows that all Hadamard graphs GN (N ≥ 12) and c=N yield pseudo-telepathy games.

  • Modal-Expansion Analysis of Electromagnetically Coupled Coaxial Dipole Antennas

    This paper presents a modal-expansion analysis of the electromagnetically coupled coaxial dipole antenna. The analysis of the antenna problem is initially simplified using the even-odd mode excitation and then the resultant half structure is divided into two parts; one is the characterization of a coaxial feeding network and the other is the modeling of a sleeve monopole antenna driven by a coaxial line. The formally exact modal-expansion method is employed to analyze both parts. The analysis of the sleeve monopole antenna is facilitated by introducing a perfectly conducting boundary at a distance from the monopole's top end. The current distribution and input impedance of the electromagnetically coupled coaxial dipole antenna are obtained by finding expansion coefficients through enforcing the continuity of tangential field components across regional interfaces and cascading the two parts together. Numerical results for the coaxial dipole antenna's radiation characteristics are presented and discussed.

    This paper proposes a parallel coupled microstrip bandpass filter (BPF) with ring Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) cells on the middle layer for spurious suppression. The ring EBG cells of the middle layer add a good stopband-rejection mode to the second harmonics of the parallel coupled microstrip BPF with suppression of over -50 dB, without affecting the center frequency and insertion loss of the original designed BPF. The design of ring EBG cells is presented and verified by the experimented results.

  • The Port-to-Port Isolation of the Downconversion P-Type Micromixer Using Different N-Well Topologies

    The port-to-port isolation of the micromixer is studied using three different p-type downconversion micromixers in 0.35-µm CMOS technology. Both the body effect and the well isolation influence the port-to-port isolation significantly. The body effect degrades the LO-to-IF isolation and also deteriorates the LO-to-RF isolation. Without the well isolation, the LO-to-RF isolation drops. However, the RF-to-IF isolation is independent of the body effect and well isolation. The p-type micromixer with a separate N-well and without body effect has the best port-to-port isolation properties; its LO-to-IF, LO-to-RF, and RF-to-IF isolations are -59 dB, -58 dB, and -30 dB, respectively.

    A new approach used to formulate to mixed-path propagation of surface wave is presented based on two main ingredients: the decomposition of electromagnetic fields and the introduction of equivalent electric (magnetic) currents adopted for convenience. The present method can be extended to obtain the corresponding results for the arbitrary incident wave excitation.

    A free-space method is in wide spread use for the reflectivity measurement of electromagnetic wave absorbers (EMA) in VHF and UHF range. In the free-space method, the reflection levels from EMA and from the metal plate with same size as the EMA are measured, and the reflectivity is calculated from their ratio. The incident angle such as normal or oblique must be defined, and the polarization of electromagnetic (EM) wave must be specified to be TE, TM, or circularly-polarized mode. In this paper, a parallel EM wave beam method using dielectric lenses in front of horn antennas was studied experimentally. Electromagnetic wave absorption was measured with the vertical and the oblique incidence by using this parallel EM wave beam. This measurement system has following features:• It is compact because equiphase parallel EM wave beam was obtained in a short distance from the dielectric lens.• It requires no anechoic chamber because of little multi-reflection due to high directivity of parallel EM wave beam.• It allows a large oblique incident measurement by using high directive parallel EM wave beam.

  • Near-Field Magnetic Measurements and Their Application to EMC of Digital Equipment

    Techniques of near-field magnetic measurement and their applications to EMC of digital equipment are described. Magnetic-field measurement near PCB or LSI is the mostly used technique to specify the source. This paper treats an example of board analysis by near-field magnetic measurement, the sensing mechanism and the structure of a loop probe, and a recent progress of this method and application. To establish appropriate design direction in high-speed and high-density packaging of electronic equipment, electromagnetic behavior in chip and package should be clarified. Expectation of development for measuring minute area is more and more increasing.

    A new shielding evaluation setup for conductive O-rings is proposed. This setup consists of the holder with a groove to fix the O-ring position. There are two ways to apply O-rings in narrow gaps, cylinder-fixing and plane-fixing. With this holder shielding effects of the O-rings can be evaluated from 10 kHz to 1 GHz for both fixing types.

  • A Study on the Effect of Grounded Conductive Sheet Placed over PCB for Electromagnetic Noise Shielding

    The effect of a grounded conductive sheet placed over a PCB with a microstrip line on the electromagnetic noise shielding is discussed experimentally and with FDTD modeling. The grounding position of the sheet, which is connected with the ground plane of PCB, is changed. In results, the resonance frequency is shifted by the grounding position, and reducing the resonance of the input impedance should make a more effective shielding for EM noise radiation below 1 GHz.

    An inverse scattering problem of estimating the surface impedance for an inhomogeneous half-space is investigated. By virtue of the fact that the far field representation contains the spectral function of the scattered field, complex values of the function are estimated from a set of absolute values of the far field. An approximate function for the spectral function is reconstructed from the estimated complex values by the least-squares sense. The surface impedance is estimated through calculating the field on the surface of the half-space expressed by the inverse Fourier transform. Numerical examples are given and the accuracy of the estimation is discussed.

  • Adaptive Plastic-Landmine Visualizing Radar System: Effects of Aperture Synthesis and Feature-Vector Dimension Reduction

    We propose an adaptive plastic-landmine visualizing radar system employing a complex-valued self-organizing map (CSOM) dealing with a feature vector that focuses on variance of spatial- and frequency-domain inner products (V-CSOM) in combination with aperture synthesis. The dimension of the new feature vector is greatly reduced in comparison with that of our previous texture feature-vector CSOM (T-CSOM). In experiments, we first examine the effect of aperture synthesis on the complex-amplitude texture in space and frequency domains. We also compare the calculation cost and the visualization performance of V- and T-CSOMs. Then we discuss merits and drawbacks of the two types of CSOMs with/without the aperture synthesis in the adaptive plastic-landmine visualization task. The V-CSOM with aperture synthesis is found promising to realize a useful plastic-landmine detection system.

    We had recently measured a chromatic dispersion of optical fiber and a time delay of chirped fiber grating based on a bidirectional modulation of an optical intensity modulator. In this paper, we analyze characteristics of the chromatic dispersion measurement method using a bidirectional modulation of an optical intensity modulator, and give a detailed explanation about the selection of measurement setup parameters to achieve an accurate measurement. We also propose a modified measurement system to decrease relative intensity noise caused by the bidirectional transmission through a device under test.

  • On the Inversion of Wind Scatterometer Incomplete Data Sets

    ERS-1/2 wind scatterometers (WSC) data sets may contain cells in which two, instead of three, measurements are available. These data sets are called incomplete. Operational inversion procedures discard such data sets and therefore no wind field is estimated. This is very limiting in semi-closed seas such as the Mediterranean Sea. In this paper we propose a new inversion procedure capable to retrieving near surface wind fields from incomplete data sets. This procedure is an enhancement of an algorithm already proposed and tested by the authors. A set of comprehensive experiments are presented and discussed. It is shown that the inversion procedure gets to remarkable results even in presence of a large number of doublets.

  • An Iterative Factorization Method Based on Rank 1 for Projective Structure and Motion

    We propose a method for the recovery of projective structure and motion by the factorization of the rank 1 matrix containing the images of all points in all views. In our method, the unknowns are the 3D motion and relative depths of the set of points, not their 3D positions. The coordinates of the points along the camera plane are given by their image positions in the first frame. The knowledge of the coordinates along the camera plane enables us to solve the SFM problem by iteratively factorizing the rank 1 matrix. This simplifies the decomposition compared with the SVD (Singular Value Decomposition). Experiments with both simulated and real data show that the method is efficient for the recovery of projective structure and motion.
