Passive SONAR receives a mixed form of signal that is a combination of continuous and discrete line-component spectrum signals. The conventional algorithms, DEMON and LOFAR, respectively target each type of signal, but do not consider the other type of signal also present in the practical environment. Thus when features from two types of signals are presented at the same time, analysis results may cause confusion. In this paper, we propose an integrated analysis algorithm for underwater signals using the modulation spectrogram domain. The proposed domain presents the visual difference between the different types of signal, and therefore can prevent confusion that would otherwise be feasible. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is more efficient than multiband DEMON in terms of computation complexity, while in colored ambient noise environment, it has similar performance to conventional DEMON and LOFAR. We prove the validity of the proposed algorithm through the relevant experiments with synthesized signal and actual underwater recordings.

Homemade cooking plays a key role for a healthy and cost-efficient life. Unfortunately, preparing multiple dishes is generally time-consuming. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed to minimize the cooking time by scheduling the cooking-step of multiple dishes. The cooking procedure of a dish is divided into a sequence of six types of cooking-steps to consider the constraints in cooks and cooking utensils in a kitchen. A cooking model is presented to optimize the cooking-step schedule and estimate the cooking time for a given starting order of dishes under various constraints of cooks and utensils. Then, a high-quality schedule is sought by repeating the generation of a new order and the model application based on exhaustive search and simulated annealing. Our simulation results and cooking experiments confirm the effectiveness of our proposal.

We demonstrated that load balancing using actual subscriber extension numbers was practical and effective against traffic congestion after a disaster based on actual data. We investigated the ratios of the same subscriber extension numbers in each prefecture and found that most of them were located almost evenly all over the country without being concentrated in a particular area. The ratio of every number except for the fourth-last digit in the last group of four numbers in a telephone number was used almost equally and located almost evenly all over the country. Tolerance against overload in the last, second-, and third-last single digits stays close to that in the ideal situation if we assume that each session initiation protocol server has a capacity in accordance with the ratio of each number on every single digit in the last group of four numbers in Japan. Although tolerance against overload in double-, triple-, and quadruple-digit numbers does not stay close to that in the ideal situation, it still remains sufficiently high in the case of double- and triple-digit numbers. Although tolerance against overload in the quadruple-digit numbers becomes low, disaster congestion is still not likely to occur in almost half of the area of Japan (23 out of 47 prefectures).

In this Letter, a new iris recognition approach based on local Gabor orientation feature is proposed. On one hand, the iris feature extraction method using the traditional Gabor filters can cause time-consuming and high-feature dimension. On the other hand, we can find that the changes of original iris texture in angle and radial directions are more obvious than the other directions by observing the iris images. These changes in the preprocessed iris images are mainly reflected in vertical and horizontal directions. Therefore, the local directional Gabor filters are constructed to extract the horizontal and vertical texture characteristics of iris. First, the iris images are preprocessed by iris and eyelash location, iris segmentation, normalization and zooming. After analyzing the variety of iris texture and 2D-Gabor filters, we construct the local directional Gabor filters to extract the local Gabor features of iris. Then, the Gabor & Fisher features are obtained by Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Finally, the nearest neighbor method is used to recognize the iris. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better iris recognition performance with less feature dimension and calculation time.

Perceptually optimized missing texture reconstruction via neighboring embedding (NE) is presented in this paper. The proposed method adopts the structural similarity (SSIM) index as a measure for representing texture reconstruction performance of missing areas. This provides a solution to the problem of previously reported methods not being able to perform perceptually optimized reconstruction. Furthermore, in the proposed method, a new scheme for selection of the known nearest neighbor patches for reconstruction of target patches including missing areas is introduced. Specifically, by monitoring the SSIM index observed by the proposed NE-based reconstruction algorithm, selection of known patches optimal for the reconstruction becomes feasible even if target patches include missing pixels. The above novel approaches enable successful reconstruction of missing areas. Experimental results show improvement of the proposed method over previously reported methods.

Due to the depletion of the public IPv4 address pool, Internet service providers will not be able to supply their new customers with public IPv4 addresses in the near future. Either they give private IPv4 addresses and use carrier grade NAT (CGN) or they move towards IPv6 and provide NAT64 service to the IPv6 only clients who want to reach IPv4 only servers. In both cases they must use a stateful NAT/NAT64 solution. When dimensioning a NAT/NAT64 gateway, the port number consumption of the clients is a key factor as the port numbers are 16 bits long and a unique one has to be provided for every session (when using traditional type NAPT, which does not include the destination IP address and port number in the tuple for the identification of TCP sessions) and a single web client may use several hundred sessions and an equal number of port numbers according to literature. In this paper, we present a method for the estimation of the port number consumption of web browsing. The method is based on the port number consumption measurements of the most popular web sites and their combination using the number of the visitors of the web sites as weight factors. We propose the resulting curve as an approximation of a general profile of the average port number consumption of web browsers after the first click, but without taking into consideration the effect of the web users' browsing behavior. We also discuss the case of the extended NAPT, which can reuse the source port numbers towards different destination IP addresses and/or destination port numbers. We propose a formula and give measurement results for the extended NAPT gateways, too. We disclose the measurement method in detail and provide the measurement scripts in Linux, too.

In this paper, we propose an analytical approach for adaptive decode-and-forward (ADF) relaying schemes consisting of burst data transmission based on pilot symbol assisted-channel estimation (PSA-CE) methods over quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. At first, we focus on the error-event at relay nodes in which the transmission mode switching is carried out burst by burst, whereas previous studies assumed the transmission mode switching symbol-by-symbol, thus showing lower error rate bound. Under consideration of burst transmission for ADF relay systems, we derive exact error rate expressions which better estimate the performance of actual systems. Then, the average bit and burst error rates are derived in approximated expressions for an arbitrary link signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) related with channel estimation errors. Their accuracy is confirmed by comparison with simulation results. Furthermore, ADF relay systems with PSA-CE schemes are confirmed to select correctly decoded relay nodes without additional signaling between relay nodes and the destination node and it is verified to achieve the performance at a cost of negligible SNR loss.

This paper extends our previously proposed non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme to the base station (BS) cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular downlink for future radio access. The proposed NOMA scheme employs intra-beam superposition coding of a multiuser signal at the transmitter and the spatial filtering of inter-beam interference followed by the intra-beam successive interference canceller (SIC) at the user terminal receiver. The intra-beam SIC cancels out the inter-user interference within a beam. This configuration achieves reduced overhead for the downlink reference signaling for channel estimation at the user terminal in the case of non-orthogonal user multiplexing and enables the use of the SIC receiver in the MIMO downlink. The transmitter beamforming (precoding) matrix is controlled based on open loop-type random beamforming using a block-diagonalized beamforming matrix, which is very efficient in terms of the amount of feedback information from the user terminal. Simulation results show that the proposed NOMA scheme with block-diagonalized random beamforming in BS cooperative multiuser MIMO and the intra-beam SIC achieves better system-level throughput than orthogonal multiple access (OMA), which is assumed in LTE-Advanced. We also show that BS cooperative operation along with the proposed NOMA further enhances the cell-edge user throughput gain which implies better user fairness and universal connectivity.

In this paper, a threshold-based I-Q diversity combining scheme for ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) readers with a quadrature receiver is proposed in the aspect of improving the tag detection performance. In addition, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated as the closed-form expressions. In particular, its statistical characteristics are detailed and its performance is compared to that of conventional schemes over independent and identically distributed Rician fading conditions in terms of average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), bit error rate (BER), and the average number of required combining process. Numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme enables processing power control through threshold control while meeting the required quality of service compared to conventional schemes.

The Earth's ionosphere can hinder radio propagation with two serious problems: group delay and phase advance. Ionospheric irregularities are significantly troublesome since they make the amplitude and phase of the radio signals fluctuate rapidly, which is known as ionospheric scintillation. Severe ionospheric scintillation could cause loss of phase lock, which would degrade the positioning accuracy and affect the performance of navigation systems. Based on the phase screen model, this paper presents a novel power spectrum model of phase scintillation and a model of amplitude scintillation. Preliminary results show that, when scintillation intensity increases, the random phase and amplitude fluctuations become stronger, coinciding with the observations. Simulations of the scintillation effects on the acquisition of Beidou signals predict acquisition probability. In addition, acquisition probabilities of GPS and Beidou signals under different scintillation intensities are presented. And by the same SNR the acquisition probability decreases when the scintillation intensity increases. The simulation result shows that scintillation could cause the loss of the acquisition performance of Beidou navigation system. According to the comparison of Beidou and GPS simulations, the code length and code rate of satellite signals have an effect on the acquisition performance of navigation system.

Although Quasi Orthogonal Space Time Block Code (QOSTBC) is capable of achieving a full rate transmission for more than two transmit antennas, its generation entails a complex algorithm to create the transmission matrix for a very large number of antennas. This paper presents a simplified generation scheme of QOSTBC, which can be generalized to 2k antennas for any positive integer k. In addition, under a realistic massive MIMO with up to 16 transmit and receive antennas, the performance evaluation is conducted. It is verified that the proposed scheme provides significant performance with BPSK and QPSK modulation formats in Rayleigh fading channels.

This letter presents performance analysis in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region for matched filter (MF) precoding in single cell Massive MIMO systems. The outage probability function is derived in closed form, and the data rate of each user is also given. We have also presented asymptotic analysis in terms of data rate for MF when the number of users and the number of antennas grow without bounds. The expressions of these analytical results are rather simple and are thus convenient for overall performance evaluation. The simulation results show that the analysis are very accurate.

Ultra high definition (UHD) imaging systems have attracted much attention as a next generation television (TV) broadcasting service and video streaming service. However, the state of the art video coding standards including H.265/HEVC has not enough compression rate for streaming, broadcasting and storing UHD. Existing coding standard such as H.265/HEVC normaly use RGB-YCbCr color transform before compressing RGB color image since that procedure can decorrelate color components well. However, there is room for improvement on the coding efficiency for color image based on an observation that the luminance and chrominance components changes in same locations. This observation inspired us to propose a new post-processing method for compressed images by using weighted least square (WLS) filter with coded luminance component as a guide image, for refining the edges of chrominance components. Since the computational cost of WLS tends to superlinearly increase with increasing image size, it is difficult to apply it to UHD images. To overcome this problem, we propose slightly overlapped block partitioning and a new variant of WLS (constrained WLS, CWLS). Experimental results of objective quality comparison and subjective assessment test using 4K images show that our proposed method can outperform the conventional method and reduce the bit amount for chrominance component drastically with preserving the subjective quality.

The present study proposes a method for estimation of subjective image quality, for combinations of display physical factors, based on the Mahalanobis-Taguchi system in the field of quality engineering. The proposed method estimates subjective image quality by the estimated equation based on the Mahalanobis-Taguchi System and subjective evaluation experiments using the method of successive categories for images of which parameters are combinations of gamma, maximum luminance and minimum luminance. The estimated image quality is in good agreement with the experimental subjective image quality.

Compressive sensing (CS)-based channel estimation considerably reduces pilot symbols usage by exploiting the sparsity of the propagation channel in the delay-Doppler domain. In this paper, we consider the application of Bayesian approaches to the sparse channel estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Taking advantage of the block-sparse structure and statistical properties of time-frequency selective channels, the proposed Bayesian method provides a more efficient and accurate estimation of the channel status information (CSI) than do conventional CS-based methods. Moreover, our estimation scheme is not limited to the Gaussian scenario but is also available for channels that have non-Gaussian priors or unknown probability density functions. This characteristic is notably useful when the prior statistics of channel coefficients cannot be precisely estimated. We also design a combo pilot pattern to improve the performance of the proposed estimation scheme. Simulation results demonstrate that our method performs well at high Doppler frequencies.

We investigate a quantization error improvement technique using a dual rail configuration for optical quantization. Our proposed optical quantization uses intensity-to-wavelength conversion based on soliton self-frequency shift and spectral compression based on self-phase modulation. However, some unfavorable input peak power regions exist due to stagnations of wavelength shift or distortions of spectral compression. These phenomena could induce a serious quantization error and degrade the effective number of bit (ENOB). In this work, we propose a quantization error improvement technique which can make up for the unfavorable input peak power regions. We experimentally verify the quantization error improvement effect by the proposed technique in 6 bit optical quantization. The estimated ENOB is improved from 5.35 bit to 5.66 bit. In addition, we examine the XPM influence between counter-propagating pulses at high sampling rate. Experimental results and numerical simulation show that the XPM influence is negligible under ∼40 GS/s conditions.

We demonstrate the characterization of a horn antenna in the full F-band (90 ∼ 140 GHz) based on far-field transformation from near-field electro-optic (EO) measurement. Our nonpolarimetric self-heterodyne EO sensing system enables us to simultaneously measure the spatial distribution of the amplitude and phase of the RF signal. Because free-running lasers are used to generate and detect the RF signal, our EO sensing system has wide frequency tunability. Owing to the stable and reliable amplitude and phase measurements with minimal field perturbation, the estimated far-field patterns agree well with those of the simulated results. We have evaluated the estimation errors of the 3-dB beamwidth and position of the first sidelobe. The largest standard error of the measurements was 1.1° for 3-dB beamwidth and 3.5° for the position of first sidelobe at frequency 90 GHz. Our EO sensing system can be used to characterize and evaluate terahertz antennas for indoor communication applications such as small-size slot array antennas.

This paper investigates a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) combined with single user MIMO (SU-MIMO) for future LTE (Long-Term Evolution) enhancements. In particular, we propose practical schemes to efficiently combine NOMA with open-loop SU-MIMO (Transmission Mode 3: TM3) and closed-loop SU-MIMO (Transmission Mode 4: TM4) specified in LTE. The goal is also to clarify the performance gains of NOMA combined with SU-MIMO transmission, taking into account the LTE radio interface such as frequency-domain scheduling, adaptive modulation and coding (AMC), and NOMA specific functionalities such as, multi-user pairing/ordering, transmit power allocation and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receiver side. Based on computer simulations, we evaluate NOMA link-level performance and show that the impact of error propagation associated with SIC is marginal when the power ratio of cell-edge and cell-center users is sufficiently large. In addition, we evaluate NOMA system-level performance gains for different granularities of scheduling and MCS (modulation and coding scheme) selection, for both genie-aided channel quality information (CQI) estimation and approximated CQI estimation, and using different number of power sets. Evaluation results show that NOMA combined with SU-MIMO can still provide a hefty portion of its expected gains even with approximated CQI estimation and limited number of power sets, and also when LTE compliant subband scheduling and wideband MCS is applied.

Terahertz (THz) band is an attractive candidate for future broadband (> 10 Gb/s) wireless backhaul and fronthaul. THz transmitter employing optical frequency comb can provide high quality THz carrier, and is useful to the future broadband THz communication systems based on coherent transmission technique. To realize coherent transmission, high quality carrier generation is essential and it is important to evaluate the signal quality of a THz transmitter. In this paper, we derive error vector magnitude (EVM) including optical impairments (optical amplifier noise, laser phase noise, optical crosstalk and IQ imbalance of optical modulator) of the optical frequency comb based transmitter. The calculated EVM is in good agreement with simulated one, and practical requirements for optical impairment are indicated. The analysis will be useful in the design of THz transmission systems employing an optical frequency comb.
