  • Synthesizing Efficient VLSI Array Processors from Iterative Algorithms by Excluding Pseudo-Dependences

    This paper is concerned with synthesizing VLSI array processors from iterative algorithms. Our primary objective is to obtain the highest processor efficiency but not the shortest completion time. Unlike most of the previous work that assumes the index space of the given iterative algorithm to be boundless, the proposed method takes into account the effects of the boundaries of the index space. Due to this consideration, the pseudo-dependence relations are excluded, and most of the independent computations can therefore be uniformly grouped. With the method described in this paper, the index space is partitioned into equal-size blocks and the corresponding computations are systematically and uniformly mapped into processing elements. The synthesized VLSI array processors possess the attractive feature of very high processor efficiency, which, in general, is superior to what is derived from the conventional linear transformation methods.

    In the program development process, it is ofren necessary for programmers to know the differences between two programs, or two different versions of a program. Since programs have structures such as iteration statement and selection statement, applying text-based tools such as UNIX diff to identify the differences may produce unsatisfactory results. In this paper, we exploit a tree as the internal representation of a program, obtain the mapping between two trees and display the program differences visually based on the mapping and pretty-printing technique so that the structural differences can be identified immediately.

  • Tokky: A High-Performance, Randomizing Adaptive Message Router with Packet Expressway

    We propose a new high-performance message router for k-ary n-cube multicomputer systems, called the Tokky router. The router utilizes a small number of queues at the outputs of its communication ports to allow fully adaptive routing, misrouting to prevent deadlocks and randomization to prevent livelock. Uncongeste network performance is improved by the inclusion of the packet expressway. Accurate models are developed to predict the switch and buffer performance of routers for varying radix and dimension and these models can be used in the design of routers for networks other than those investigated here. The simulated performance of the router exceeds that of published results for oblivious routers and is equal to or exceeds those reported for other adaptive routers. These performance predictions are especially encouraging when the simplicity of the control structures required to implement the router are taken into consideration.

  • A Study of the Pendulum Equation with a Periodic Impulsive Force--Bifurcation and Control--

    The pendulum equation with a periodic impulsive force is investigated. This model described by a second order differential equation is also derived from dynamics of the stepping motor. In this paper, firstly, we analyze bifurcation phenomena of periodic solutions observed in a generalized pendulum equation with a periodic impulsive force. There exist two topologically different kinds of solution which can be chaotic by changing system parameters. We try to stabilize an unstable periodic orbit embedded in the chaotic attractor by small perturbations for the parameters. Secondly, we investigate the intermittent drive characteristics of two-phase hybrid stepping motor. We suggest that the unstable operations called pull-out are caused by bifurcations. Finally, we proposed a control method to avoid the pull-out by changing the repetitive frequency and stepping rate.

  • Analysis of 3-Line Tapered Velocity Couplers with a Nonlinear Waveguide

    We investigate a three-waveguide tapered velocity coupler which consists of a uniform linear, tapered linear and tapered nonlinear slab waveguide. The coupling characteristics depending on the gap width between the waveguides and sloping angle of the tapered waveguides are analyzed by means of the finite difference method. The numerical results show that with realistic structural parameters flat output power characteristics can be obtained over a wide range of input power. It is found that it is possible to use the present structure as a power limiter.

  • Data Bypassing Register File for Low Power Microprocessor

    In this paper, we propose a register file with data bypassing function. This register file bypasses data using data bypassing units instead of functional units when actual operation in functional units such as ALU is unnecessary. Applying this method to a general purpose microprocessor with benchmark programs, we demonstrate 50% power consumption reduction in functional units. Though length of bus lines increases a little due to an additional hardware in register file, as buses are not driven when data is bypassed, power consumption in bus lines is also reduced by 40% compared with the conventional architecture.

  • A Priori Estimation of Newton Type Homotopy Method for Calculating an Optimal Solution of Convex Optimization Problem

    In this paper a priori estimation method is presented for calculating solution of convex optimization problems (COP) with some equality and/or inequality constraints by so-called Newton type homotopy method. The homotopy method is known as an efficient algorithm which can always calculate solution of nonlinear equations under a certain mild condition. Although, in general, it is difficult to estimate a priori computational complexity of calculating solution by the homotopy method. In the presented papers, a sufficient condition is considered for linear homotopy, under which an upper bound of the complexity can be estimated a priori. For the condition it is seen that Urabe type convergence theorem plays an important role. In this paper, by introducing the results, it is shown that under a certain condition a global minimum of COP can be always calculated, and that computational complexity of the calculation can be a priori estimated. Suitability of the estimation for analysing COP is also discussed.

    This paper describes, from a system architectural viewpoint, how knowledge-based technologies have been utilized in developing EXLOG (an LSI circuit synthesis system) and SOFTEX (a software synthesis system) inside the authors' projects. Although the system architectures for EXLOG and SOFTEX started from the same production systems, consisting of transformation rules in the middle of the 1980's, both branched off in different directions in the 1990's. Based on experiences with EXLOG and SOFTEX, the differences between LSI and software design models are discussed, and the future directions are indicated for the knowledge-based design system architectures.

    In this work, we present an 8-state trellis code for bit interleaved 16-QAM and the BER performance on Rayleigh fading channel is evaluated. We analyze the BER and show that the effective code length and minimum productive distance are also important criterion for code design on bit interleaved system. We design the code by considering not only minimum Hamming distance but also the effective code length and minimum productive distance. As a result, we found that the scheme employing the code achieves good BER performance on Rayleigh fading channel even with the finite interleaving size.

    This paper proposes a novel phase ambiguity resolver with combining a very low power Viterbi decoder employing a scarce state transition scheme to realize cost effective receivers for the PCM sound broadcasting satellite service. The theoretical analyses on phase decision performance show that the proposed resolver achieves the symbol-by-symbol phase detection and decides correctly phases of the demodulated data even if the bit error probability of 710-2. The resolver also reduces the phase decision time to below 1/1000 of that of the conventional resolver. Furthermore, experimental results of the power consumption estimate that the prototype Viterbi decoder consumes only 60mW at the data rate of 24.576Mbit/s.

    High speed GaAs ICs (Integrated Circutis) using FETs (Field Effect Transistors) are reported. As the fabricating techniques, ion implantation processes for both 0.5 µm and 0.2 µm gate FETs using W/Al refractory metal and 0.2 µm recessed gate process with MBE grown epitaxial wafers are shown. These fabrication processes are selected depending on the circuit speed and the integration level. The outline of the circuit design and the examples of ICs, which are developed for 10 Gb/s optical communication systems, are also shown with the obtained characteristics.

    This paper discusses linear cryptanalysis of LOKI89, LOKI91 and s2DES. Our computer program based on Matsui's search algorithm has completely determined their best linear approximate equations, which tell us applicability of linear cryptanalysis to each cryptosystem. As a result, LOKI89 and LOKI91 are resistant to linear cryptanalysis from the viewpoint of the best linear approximate probability, whereas s2DES is breakable by a known-plaintext attack faster than an exhaustive key search. Moreover, our search program, which is also applicable to differential cryptanalysis, has derived their best differential characteristics as well. These values give a complete proof that characteristics found by Knudsen are actully best.

    In this paper face feature detection and tracking are discussed, using methods called edge pixel counting and deformable circular template matching. Instead of utilizing color or gray scale information of the facial image, the proposed edge pixel counting method utilizes the edge information to estimate the face feature positions such as eyes, nose and mouth, using a variable size face feature template, the initial size of which is predetermined by using a facial image database. The method is robust in the sense that the detection is possible with facial images with different skin color and different facial orientations. Subsequently, by using a deformable circular template matching two iris positions of the face are determined and are used in the edge pixel counting, to track the features in the next frame. Although feature tracking using gray scale template matching often fails when inter frame correlation around the feature areas are very low due to facial expression change (such as, talking, smiling, eye blinking etc.), feature tracking using edge pixel counting can track facial features reliably. Some experimental results are shown to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    We propose an algorithm for image decomposition based on Hadamard functions, realized by answer-in-weights neural network, which has simple architecture and is explored with steepest decent method. This scheme saves memory consumption and it converges fast. Simulations with least mean square (LMS) and absolute mean (AM) errors on a 128128 image converge within 30 training epochs.

    Conceptual graph formalism is a knowledge representation language in AI based on a graphical form of logic. Although logic is the basis of the conceptual graph theory, there is a strongly felt absence of a formal treatment of conceptual graphs as a logic programming language. In this paper, we develop the notion of a conceptual graph program as a kind of graph-based order-sorted logic program. First, we define the syntax of the conceptual graph program by specifying its major syntactic elements. Then, we develop a kind of model theoretic semantics and fixpoint semantics of the conceptual graph program. Finally, we show that the two types of semantics coincide for the conceptual graph programs.

    This paper discusses the performance of non-coherent reception for M-ary spread-spectrum (M-ary/SS) signals in the presence of carrier frequency offset. In general, the M-ary/SS scheme is expected to be of higher spectral efficiency than the conventional DS/SS schemes, but its performance may be degraded by the carrier frequency offset. We, therefore, analyze the effect of carrier frequency offset on the performance of the non-coherent M-ary/SS system with orthogonal modulation using a set of sequences generated by the Hadamard matrix. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that the carrier frequency offset may cause a great deal of degradation in the performance, and that its effect has a distinctive property which is due to the characteristic of Hadamard matrix, at the same time. Making use of this property, we propose two schemes that can mitigate the effect of carrier frequency offset: one is based on choise of the code sequences, the other is on the error correcting code. The effectiveness of the schemes is evaluated in the terms of symbol-error-rates through analysis and computer simulation.

  • A Similar Key Search File Based on Extendible Hashing

    The organization of the proposed file and algorithms for search and maintenance of the file are simpler than those of a similar key search file based on B+-tree. An experiment using 230,188 keys with length 1-16 shows the good performance of the file. The storage utilization of the file is about 68%.

  • Effects of Hard-Limiter and Error Correction Coding on Performance of Direct-Detection Optical CDMA Systems with PPM Signaling

    The effect of an optical hard-limiter on the performance of direct-detection optical synchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems with M-ary pulse position modulation (PPM) signaling is analyzed. Moreover, the effect of the error correction coding on the performance of direct-detection optical synchronous CDMA systems with PPM signaling is analyzed: Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and convolutional codes (CC's) with soft-decision Viterbi decoding are employed. We analyze the performance under the assumption of Poisson shot noise model for the receiver photodetector and the noise due to the detector dark currents is considered. We analyze the performance under average power and bit rate constraints. Our results show that the optical hard-limiter is not effective for improving the performance of the optical CDMA systems with PPM signaling. Moreover, RS codes are shown to be more effective than CC's with soft-decision Viterbi decoding to reduce an asymptotic floor to the error probability of the system with large M, while CC's with soft-decision Viterbi decoding is more effective than RS codes for the system with small M. Furthermore, we show that as the code rate of the error correction code increases, the required average energy to achieve the bit error probability Pb105 for the RS coded PPM/CDMA system appreciably increases compared with that for the convolutional coded PPM/CDMA system when M16.

  • A Constructing Method of Functional Model by Integrated Learning from Examples of Software Modification

    One approach to develop software efficiently is to reuse existing software by modifying a part of it. However, modifying software will often introduce unexpected side effects into other parts of it. As a result, it costs much time and care to modify the software. So, in order to modify software efficiently, we have proposed a functional model to represent information about side effects caused by modification and a model based supporting system for modifying software. So far, however, an expert software developer must describe the entire functional model of the target software through the analysis of practical modifying processes. This will be an unnecessary burden on him. Moreover, the larger target software becomes, the harder the model construction becomes. Therefore, an automatic constructing method of the functional model is needed in order to solve this problem. So, this paper considers a method of acquiring useful interaction information by learning from training examples of modification. However, in our application domain, it seems that it is impossible to make complete domain theory and to prepare a large number or training examples in advance. Therefore, our learning method involves an integration of explanation-based learning (EBL) from positive examples of modification generated by the user and Similarity-based learning (SBL) from positive or negative examples generated by the user and the learning system. As a result, our method can acquire valid knowledge about the interaction from not so many examples under incomplete theory. Then, this paper presents a constructing method, in which our proposed learning method is incorporated, of a functional model. Finally, this paper demonstrates construction of the functional model in the domain of an event-driven queueing simulation program according to our learning method.

    There are three viewpoints involved in software project management: process management, quality management and cost management. Software projects must be managed on the basis of these three viewpoints. However, in many cases process management, quality management and cost management systems are built separately as individual systems respectively. Construction of software project management systems which these three functions are integrated has been rare. Therefore, in order to construct a system integrating these functions, the authors clarify the significance of integration of application systems. And then the authors unveil the structure of a software project management system that process management system, quality management system and cost management system are integrated by using an object oriented database.
