  • Parameter Insensitive Disturbance-Rejection Problem with Incomplete-State Feedback

    The disturbance-rejection problem is to find a feedback control law for linear control systems such that the influence of disturbances is completely rejected from the output. In 1970 Wonham and Morse first studied this problem in the framework of the so-called geometric approach. On the other hand, in 1985 Ghosh studied parameter insensitive disturbance-rejection problems with state feedback and with dynamic compensator. In this paper we study the parameter insensitive disturbance-rejection problem with static incomplete-state feedback for linear multivariable systems in the framework of the geometric approach from the mathematical point of view. Necessary conditions and/or sufficient conditions for this problem to be solvable are presented. Finally an illustrative example is presented.

  • The Design and Implementation of an Interoperable Database System Based on Scripts and Active Objects

    Our objective is to resolve three types of heterogeneity - data model,database system, and semantic - in heterogeneous databases. The basic framework which we propose for this objective is realized in an autonomous decentralized database system (i.e., an interoperable database system), called Jasmine/M. Users describe their relational or object-oriented data models and schemas locally using the model primitives which Jasmine/M provides as a scripting language. Description using such primitives or scripts constitutes viewports, which have a role to resolve heterogeneity in data models and database systems at local sites. At relational viewports, both relational and object-oriented schemas defined at other sites are translated via scripts and are viewed as relational schemas. Similarly at object-oriented viewports, any schema defined at other sites is viewed object-oriented schemas. Relational and object-oriented views are used to resolve semantic heterogeneity within viewports. This paper describes a step wise approach to resolving the three types of heterogeneity, using scripts, viewports, and views, and its implementation using active objects.

  • The Choice of the Initial Condition of CMA Adaptive Arrays

    In this paper, we analyze the convergence behavior of the CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) adaptive array working under the steepest decent method, and investigate how to achieve the highest possible output SINR (Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio). In multipath radio environments, CMA sometimes suppresses the desired signal (stronger one) and selects to receive the interference (the weaker one) resulting in the low output SINR. This is one of the problems met in an optimization system under a nonlinear control equation where there are two or more local minima of the cost function and the final state depends on the initial condition. The study can be done only numerically by starting from various initial values. In our analysis of the CMA adaptive array in multipath radio environments, we will assume that there are two waves which are radiated from the same source and try to find out what conditions may affect the convergence behavior. In this process, we discover the effect of the neglected factor by the previous papers and revise the initial condition to guarantee the reception of the desirable wave. In conclusion, we propose the prescription of the initial weights of the array elements as well as the choice of preferable arrays.

  • An ASIC Implementation Scheme to Realize a Beam Space CMA Adaptive Array Antenna

    We demonstrate a feasibility of a Beam Space CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) Adaptive array antenna by implementing a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) in ASICs using field programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The DSP can synthesize 16 multibeams and eliminate interference signals by CMA adaptive processing. The whole function was implemented in about 127,000 equivalent gates. Simple experimental results in a radio anechoic chamber have confirmed the basic function of BSCMA adaptive array antenna.

    To evaluate the radial eigenmode field distributions and the resonance wavelengths of axially symmetric pillbox resonator, a numerical method is described which is based on the FE-BPM expression in cylindrical coordinates. Under the weakly guiding approximation, we solve Fresnel equation and can get a fairly accurate result. By using effective index method, 3-D pillbox guiding structure is reduced to 2-D one which is then used for the analysis. One advantage of this method is that it is applicable for the axially symmetric optical waveguides with arbitrary index distribution. The validity of this method is checked by comparing the results of this method with those of the analytical ones. This method is applied for the evaluation of the coupling properties of a coupled structure consisting of a pillbox resonator and a curved waveguide placed outside the pillbox. This coupled structure has a good prospect to be used as optical wavelength filter. By varying the separation distance between the pillbox and the outer curved waveguide, the power transfer due to coupling is determined near the resonance wavelength 0.9 µm.

  • A Block Management Mechanism for Multimedia Files

    In general, multimedia files are much larger than ordinary text files because they consist of multiple monomedia. In order to process large multimedia files in real time, the file system must be able to store and access files efficiently. In th UNIX s5 file system, a multimedia file may be scattered into many disk blocks over the entire disk space, and accessing a multimedia file requires a considerable amount of time for random disk head movement. This paper proposes the internal structure of a multimedia file and its inode which is modified from UNIX s5 file system's. Also, we propose a mechanism for allocating and deallocating contiguous disk blocks for large multimedia files using the bitmap tree and compares its performance with that of the UNIX s5 file system. Our results show that the proposed mechanism reduces considerably the number of disk I/Os required to allocate and deallocate contiguous disk blocks. It also reduces the total access time for large multimedia files by approximately 95% due to the contiguous allocation of disk spaces.

  • Specialization Constraints for a Complex Object Model Supporting Selective Inheritance

    For a complex object model, a form of range restriction, called specialization constraint (SC), has been studied. On the other hand, very few models have been proposed that support selective inheritance. In this paper, the following consideration is taken into SCs for a complex object medel suppoorting selective inheritance. A polynomial-time algorithm is given for deciding if a given database schema is well-formed. A sound and complete axiomatization for SCs is presented. A polynomial-time algorithm is given that decides if an SC is a logical consequence of a set of SCs. Finally, another polynomial-time algorithm is given, which decides if there exists a database that contains a given path from a given class.

  • A Spatially and Temporally Optimal Multi-User Receiver Using an Array Antenna for DS/CDMA

    The tandem structure of a matched filter (MF) and a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) using the Viterbi algorithm (VA) has been considered to be an optimal receiver for digital pulse-amplitude sequences in the presence of intersymbol interference (ISI) and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). An adaptive array antenna has the capability of filtering received signals in the spatial domain as well as in the temporal one. In this paper, we propose a receiver structure using an adaptive array antenna, a digital filter and the VA that is spatially and temporally optimal for multi-user detection in a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) environment. This receiver uses a tapped delay line (TDL) array antenna and the VA, which provides a maximum likelihood sequence estimate from the spatially and temporally whitened matched filter (ST-WMF) output. Performance of the proposed receiver is evaluated by theoretical analysis and computer simulations.

  • Tap Selectable Viterbi Equalizer Combined with Diversity Antennas

    This paper proposes and investigates a tap selectable Viterbi equalizer for mobile radio communications. When the multipath channel is modeled by a tapped delay line only, the taps which may seriously affect the data sequence estimation are selected and used to calculate the trellis metric in the Viterbi algorithm. The proposed equalization algorithm can reduce the number of path metric calculations and the number of path selections in the Viterbi algorithm. Moreover, we propose an extended equalizer which has antenna diversity. This equalizer calculates the path metric using the antenna outputs and results of channel estimators. Computer simulation is used to evaluate the BER performance of the proposed equalizer in a multipath radio channel.

    A typed, object-oriented database technology, equipped with appropriate declarative, temporal logic based executable constraints, is presented. The underlying object-oriented database type system is based on advanced features such as subtype, parametric and F-bounded polymorphism. A particularly distinctive feature of the type system is its associated type-safe reflection technology, which provides the flexibility required by database operators without sacrificing type safety. Strongly, and even statically typed, executable class specifications of a variety of standard database abstractions, both application-oriented and system-oriented, are presented in the paper, in order to demonstrate strate the applicability of the paradigm. The temporal logic basis of the constraint language has an execution model, as well as the minimal model semantics, and it allows complex, temporal behavioral patterns to be expressed. It is based on three tomporal operators: always, next time and some time, and rules that determine how these operators may be applied in temporal Horn clauses. Because of the object-oriented nature of the paradigm, the logic basis is also equipped with the equality predicate The proposed technology is intended to provide major advantages not only in managing appropriately complex application environments with temporal constraints, but also in providing more efficient (because of static type checking) and reliable database management systems. It offers the advantages of non-procedural data languages and the richness of a temporal object-oriented paradigm. It also leads to a powerful prototyping tool for structural and behavioral testing of complex, strongly typed object-oriented systems, prior to major procedural implementation efforts.

  • Development of Particulate Recording Media with Ultrathin Magnetic Layer

    A particulate recording medium with an ultrathin magnetic layer is presented in this paper. This medium consists of a magnetic layer and a nonmagnetic underlayer composed of very fine titanium dioxide powder. When metal powder was employed, we observed the anticipated advantages of decreasing the thickness of the magnetic layer in tapes and diskettes. By reducing the layer thickness to below 0.3 µm we were able to increase the reproduced output at short wavelengths, and improve both the overwrite erasability and the D50. There was also a decrease in the half peak width of an isolated pulse and a peak shift. Tribological advantages were also observed with this medium. When barium ferrite was employed as the magnetic powder, we observed that the modulation noise of thin-layer barium ferrite medium was less than that of a thinlayer MP medium while it generated an output as high as that of the MP medium. The advantages of the barium ferrite medium lie in its two-layer construction. Particulate media will continue to develop as magnetic powder is improved mainly in terms of its size, saturation magnetization, and coercivity.

  • High-Resolution Techniques in Signal Processing Antennas

    Signal processing antennas have been studied not only for interference suppression but also for high-resolution estimation of radio environment such as directions-of-arrival of incident signals. These two applications are based on the common technique, that is, null steering. This tutorial paper reviews the MUSIC algorithm which is one of the typical high-resolution techniques. Examining the eigenvector beam patterns, we demonstrate that the high-resolution capability is realized by steering nulls. The considerations will be useful for understanding the high-resolution techniques in the signal processing antennas. We then describe a modified version of MUSIC (Root MUSIC). We show the performance and robustness of the method. Furthermore, we introduce radar target identification and two-dimensional radar target imaging. These study fields are new applications of the signal processing antennas, to which a great deal of attention has been devoted recently.

  • The Differential CMA Adaptive Array Antenna Using an Eigen-Beamspace System

    This paper addresses approaches to enhancement of performance of the CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) adaptive array antenna in multipath environments that characterize the mobile radio communications. The cost function of the CMA reveals that it has an AGC (Automatic Gain Control) procedure of holding the array output voltage at a constant value. Therefore, if the output voltage by the initial weights is different from the object value, then the CMA may suffer from slow convergence because suppression of the multipath waves is delayed by the AGC behavior. Our objective is to improve the convergence characteristics by adopting the differential CMA for the adaptive array algorithm. First, the basic performance of the differential CMA is clarified via computer simulation. Next, the differential CMA is incorporated into the eigen-beamspace system in which the eigenvectors of the correlation matrix of array inputs are used in the BFN (Beam Forming Network). This BFN creates the optimum orthogonal multibeams for radio environments and works helpfully as a preprocessor of the differential CMA. The computer simulation results have demonstrated that the differential CMA with the eigen-beamspace system has much better convergence characteristics than the conventional CMA with the element space system. Furthermore, a modified algorithm is introduced which gives the stable array output voltages after convergence, and it is confirmed that the algorithm can carry out more successful adaptation even if the radio environments are changed abruptly.

    The MUSIC algorithm has proven to be an effective means of estimating parameters of multiple incoherent signals. Furthermore, the forward-backward (FB) spatial smoothing technique has been considered the best preprocessing method to decorrelate coherent signals. In this paper, we propose a novel preprocessing technique based upon ideas associated with the FB and adaptive spatial smoothing techniques and report on its superiority in numerical simulations.

  • Control of Soft Magnetism of Co-Zr and Co-Zr-Ta Films for Backlayers in Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Media

    Co-Zr and Co-Zr-Ta amorphous films were prepared by the Kr sputtering method for use as the backlayers of Co-Cr perpendicular magnetic recording tape media. The effect of the addition of Ta to Co-Zr thin films was also investigated. Lower substrate temperature was required to prepare amorphous Co-Zr films with excellent soft magnetic properties. The relationships among Ta content X, magnetostriction constant λ and magnetic characteristics such as coercivity Hc and relative permeability µr were clarified. A method of evaluating λ of soft magnetic thin films deposited on polymer sheet substrate has been presented. Films with composition of (Co95.7Zr4.3) 100-X TaX at X of 10 at.% possessed sufficiency soft magnetic properties such as low Hc below 80 A/m and high µr above 600. Addition of Ta was effective in changing change the sign of λ from positive to negative. It was found that the negative magnetoelastic energy and the smaller λ caused the soft magnetism.

  • Eliminating the Quantization Problem in Signal Subspace Techniques

    When signal subspace techniques, such as MuSIC, are used to locate a number of incident signals, an exhaustive search of the array manifold has to be carried out. This search involves the evaluation of a single cost function at a number of points which form a grid, resulting in quantization-error effects. In this paper a new algorithm is put forward to overcome the quantization problem. The algorithm uses a number of cost functions, and stages, equal to the number of incident signals. At each stage a new cost function is evaluated in a small number of "special" directions, known as characteristic points. For an N-element array the characteristic points, which can be pre-calculated from the array manifold curvatures, partition the array manifold into N-1 regions. By using a simple gradient algorithm, only a small area of one of these regions is searched at each stage, demonstrating the potential benefits of the proposed approach.

  • A Distributed BIST Technique and Its Test Design Platrorm for VLSIs

    This paper proposes a distributed built-in self-test (BIST) technique and its test design platform for VLSIs. This BIST has lower hardware overhead pattern generators, compressors and controller. The platform cuts down on the number of complicated operations needed for the BIST insertion and evaluation, so the BIST implementation turn-around-time (TAT) is dramatically reduced. Experimental results for the 110 k-gate arithmetic execution blocks of an image-processing LSI show that using this BIST structure and platform enables the entire BIST implementation within five days. The implemented BIST has a 1% hardware overhead and 96% fault coverage. This platform will significantly reduce testing costs for time-to-market and mass-produced LSIs.

    In this paper, we discuss an abstraction method for Petri nets based on an equivalence of firing sequences of a specified subnet or a specified subset of transitions. Specifically, a method is presented to generate an equivalent net which preserves firing sequences of a specified subnet or a specified subset of transitions. The abstraction can be applied to an efficient behavioral analysis of concurrent systems constructed by composition of modules such as communication networks and Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS).

    In this paper, a pushdown automaton, with an infinite set of states as a partially ordered set (poset), is formulated, and its control problem of whether a given configuration can be transferred to another is discussed. For the controllability to be decidable, we take a condition the poset satisfies, that is, a condition that there are only finite number of states under the partial ordering between two given states. The control problem is decidable in polynomial time on condition the length of each pushed stack string is bounded by a constant in a given pushdown automaton. The motivation of considering the control problem comes up from the stack structure in implementing the SLD resolution deductions, in which the leftmost atom in each goal is selected and unified with some procedure name (that is, some head) of a definite clause, with the effect of the procedure name being replaced by the procedure bodies and unifications. Thus, the control problem is applied to describe the SLD resolution deductions of finite steps, by constructing a pushdown automaton model for a set of definite clauses, in which leftmost selection of atom in each goal forms a stack structure and substitutions affecting goals are interpreted as states. When constructing a pushdown automaton model for an SLD resolution deduction, algebraic properties of the idempotent substitution set, which are used in unifications, are examined and utilized. The quotient set of the idempotent substitution set per renamings is adopted to present the automaton model.

  • Simplification of Viterbi Algorithm for (1, 7) RLL Code

    Simplification of the Viterbi algorithm and the error rate performance are presented for a partial response maximum-likelihood (PRML) system employing the PR(1, 1) system as a PR system for (1, 7) run-length limited (RLL) code. The minimum run-length of 1's or O's in the output sequence of the precoder for (1, 7) RLL code is limited to 2. Two kinds of simplified Viterbi algorithms using this run-length constraint are proposed. One algorithm requires the path memory length of only two in the Viterbi detector. The Viterbi detector based on the other algorithm is equivalent to the simple PR(1, 1) system followed by a threshold detector. The bit-error rates of PRML systems with Viterbi detectors based on these algorithms are obtained by computer simulation and their performance is compared with that of conventional PRML systems for (1, 7) RLL code. It is shown that the proposed PRML system exhibits better performance than conventional PRML systems at high recording density.
