  • A Path Loss Model in Residential Areas Based on Measurement Studies Using a 5.2-GHz/2.2-GHz Dual Band Antenna

    Research on the propagation characteristics in the microwave band aiming at broadband mobile services is attracting much attention. Typical examples are the Unlicensed-NII (U-NII) band in the U.S. and HIPER-LAN band in Europe, i.e. 5.2 GHz. An efficient approach to revealing the propagation characteristics in the 5-GHz band is to utilize the existing propagation data accumulated by many researchers on the 2-GHz band. This paper presents the differences in path loss between the 5.2-GHz and 2.2-GHz bands in a residential area by using a 5.2-GHz/2.2-GHz dual band antenna. This antenna enables a direct comparison of 5.2 GHz and 2.2 GHz in terms of the propagation characteristics. We found that the difference in path loss between the 2.2-GHz and 5.2-GHz bands depends on only the base/mobile station antenna height. Based on this, we formulate the relationship between the heights of the base/mobile station antennas and the difference in path loss between the 2.2-GHz and 5.2-GHz bands.

    This paper proposes a new heuristic algorithm FMDB for the minimum initial marking problem MIM of Petri nets: "Given a Petri net and a firing count vector X, find an initial marking M0, with the minimum total token number, for which there is a sequence δ of transitions such that each transition t appears exactly X(t) times in δ, the first transition is firable on M0 and the rest can be fired one by one subsequently. " Experimental results show that FMDB produces better solutions than any known algorithm.

    To reduce an amount of computation of full search algorithm for fast motion estimation, we propose a new and fast matching algorithm without any degradation of predicted images. The computational reduction without any degradation comes from adaptive matching scan algorithm according to the image complexity of the reference block in current frame. Experimentally, we significantly reduce the computational load compared with conventional full search algorithm.

    In this paper, a new expression is derived for the bit error rate (BER) performance of Gray-encoded MDPSK for M=2 and 4 in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over time-variant and frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channels. We assume that the guard time is sufficiently larger than the delay spread to solve the intersymbol interference (ISI) problem on the demodulated OFDM signal. In this case, the performance depends on the Doppler spread of fading channel. The closed form expression for the bit error probability of MDPSK/OFDM extended from the result in [5] shows that the BER performance of MDPSK is determined by (N + NG ) fD Ts where N is the number of subchannels, NG the length of the guard interval, fD the maximum Doppler frequency, and Ts the sampling period. The theoretical analysis results are confirmed by computer simulations for DPSK and QDPSK signals.

  • A Waste-Free Fairness Control for Rings with Spatial Reuse

    While spatial reuse in a high-speed ring increases the throughput performance, it leads to a fairness problem in distributing the network bandwidth among distinct nodes. To alleviate this problem, fairness control algorithms based on a packet window have been developed. Under these algorithms, satisfied nodes are forced to pass empty slots to starved downstream nodes until their windows are refilled by a reset signal. This regulation incurs a bandwidth waste corresponding to the travel distance of those empty slots. In this paper, a waste-free fairness control method based on a two-layer window composed of the cycle and packet windows is developed. Using the proposed method, packets allocated to multiple fairness cycles are simultaneously transferred and, in consequence, the otherwise wasted bandwidth can be reused to carry, in advance, packets allocated to future fairness cycles. This method is applied to two typical ring protocols with only the packet window, ATMR and MetaRing, and their performances are investigated. The simulation results show that the cycle window is very effective to improve the performance of the ATMR and MetaRing protocols.

    We consider a dynamically reconfigureable network where dynamically changing traffic is offered. Rearrangement and adjustment of network capacity can be performed to maintain Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for different traffic classes in the dynamic traffic environment. In this work, we consider the case of a single, dynamic traffic class scenario in a loss mode environment. We have developed a numerical, analytical tool which models the dynamically changing network traffic environment using a time-varying, fluid-flow, differential equation; of which we can use to study the impact of adaptive capacity adjustment control schemes. We present several capacity adjustment control schemes including schemes which use blocking and system utilization as means to calculate when and how much adjustment should be made. Through numerical studies, we show that a purely blocking-based capacity adjustment control scheme with a preset adjustment value can be very sensitive to capacity changes and can lead to network instability. We also show that schemes, that uses system utilization as a means to calculate the amount of capacity adjustment needed, is consistently stable for the load scenarios considered. Finally, we introduce a minimum time interval threshold between adjustments, which can avoid network instability, in the cases where the results showed that capacity adjustment had been performed too often.

    We propose a blind source separation algorithm for the mixture of finite alphabet sources where sensors are less than sources. The algorithm consists of an update equation of an estimated mixing matrix and enumeration of the inferred sources. We present the bound of a step size for the stability of the algorithm and two methods of assignment of the initial point of the estimated mixing matrix. Simulation results verify the proposed algorithm.

    The first important step in pre-processing data for 3D virtual colonoscopy requires careful segmentation of a complicated shaped colon. We describe an automatic colon segmentation method with a new patient-friendly bowel preparation scheme. This new bowel preparation makes the segmentation more appropriate for digitally removing undesirable remains in the colon. With the aim of segmenting the colon accurately, we propose two techniques which can solve the partial-volume-effect (PVE) problem on the boundaries between low and high intensity regions. Based on the features of the adverse PVE voxels on the gas and fluid boundary inside the colon, our vertical filter eliminates these PVE voxels. By seriously considering the PVE on the colon boundary, our gradient-magnitude-based region growing algorithm improves the accuracy of the boundary. The result of the automatic colon segmentation method is illustrated with both extracted 2D images from the experimental volumetric abdominal CT datasets and a reconstructed 3D colon model.

  • Security of E2 against Truncated Differential Cryptanalysis

    This paper evaluates the security of the block cipher E2 against truncated differential cryptanalysis. We show an algorithm to search for effective truncated differentials. The result of the search confirmed that there exist no truncated differentials that lead to possible attacks for E2 with more than 8 rounds. The best attack breaks an 8-round variant of E2 with either IT-Function (the initial transformation) or FT-Function (the final transformation) using 294 chosen plaintexts. We also found the attack which distinguishes a 7-round variant of E2 with IT- and FT-Functions from a random permutation using 291 chosen plaintexts.

    Aged people who live alone are in particular need of a daily health check, medication, and of warm communication with family and friends. The authors have been developing a life-support computer system with such functions. Among them, a daily health check function with the capability of measuring blood pressure, detecting diseases from coughing, and so on would in particular be very powerful for primary care. As a first step to achieving quick services for a daily health check with a personal computer, utilization of cough information is considered. Features of cough data are analyzed aiming at developing an automatic cough data detection method. This paper proposes a novel method for extracting cough signals from other types of signals. The differential coefficient of a low-pass filtered waveform is first shown to be an effective parameter for discriminating between vowel and cough signals, and the relationship between cut-off frequency and cough detection rate is clarified. This parameter is then applied to cough signals mixed with vowel signals or white noises to evaluate robustness. The evaluation tests show that the cough feature can be perfectly detected for a 20 dB S/N ratio when the cut-off frequency is set to 24 [Hz]. The experimental results suggest that the proposed cough detection method can be a useful tool as a primary care for aged people with a bronchitis like an asthmatic bronchitis and a bronchopneumonia.

    This paper describes a new algorithm for configuring the array of adders used to add the partial products in a multiplier circuit. The new algorithm reduces not only the number of half adders in an adder tree, but also the number of operands passed to the block generating the final product in a multiplier. The arrays obtained with this algorithm are smaller than Wallace's ones and have fewer outputs than Dadda's arrays. We show some evaluation figures and preliminary simulation results of 4, 8 and 16-bit tree configurations.

  • An Initial Code Acquisition Scheme for Indoor Packet DS/SS Systems with Macro/Micro Antenna Diversity

    In this paper, we study macro/micro diversity techniques for code acquisition of a direct-sequence spread-spectrum signal in an indoor packet communication system. In the system discussed, the base station has several radio ports each with a cluster of antennas, and the terminal also has multiple antennas. The performance in the uplink of this system is analyzed under Lognormal shadowing and flat Rayleigh fading. The numerical results show great performance improvements by proposed diversity techniques. In addition, it is clarified that the mean acquisition time, which is often used as the measure of performance, is not suitable for packet radio systems as it underestimates the necessary preamble length for initial code acquisition.

  • Resource Sharing Scheme for Cellular Data Services with Differentiated QoS

    To provide cellular data services with differentiated QoS, a shared resource scheme, based on the optimization theory and LaGrange λ-calculus was developed. This scheme can generate a fair schedule for a diverse mix of traffic with diverse QoS requirements in a limited radio spectrum. We define the acceptance indication, AI, as the QoS measurement for the shared resource scheme. The experimental results show that this approach outperforms other existing schemes.

    As a preprocessor of the automatic speech recognizer in a noisy environment, a microphone array system has been investigated to reduce the environmental noise. In usual microphone array design, a plane wave is assumed for the sake of simplicity (far-field assumption). However, this far-field assumption does not always hold, resulting in distortion in the array output. In this report, the subspace method, which is one of the high resolution spectrum estimator, is applied to the near-field source localization problem. A high resolution method is necessary especially for the near-field source localization with a small-sized array. By combining the source localization technique with a spatial inverse filter, the signal coming from the multiple sources in the near-field range can be separated. The modified minimum variance beamformer is used to design the spatial inverse filter. As a result of the experiment in a real environment with two sound sources in the near-field range, 60-70% of word recognition rate was achieved.

  • Advanced Sequential Control Based on an Autonomous Decentralized System for Attaining Highly Productive Systems

    A new method of sequential control has been developed in order to increase the productivity and flexibility of production systems. This advanced sequential control (ASC) method is proposed for sequential control systems based on the autonomous decentralized system (ADS) architecture. The ADS defines the system software and message formats and makes it easy to expand the number of devices and software modules. The ASC method increases productivity because it minimizes the processing and adjustment times of production lines by adjusting the starting times of production processes automatically. Experimental evaluation results of the ASC method showed that it increases the productivity of production systems. It is also applied to an actual production system and the results are reported.

    A new method is introduced for sequential estimation of TDOA (time delay of arrival) and FDOA (frequency delay of arrival) in a two sensor array. The proposed scheme is basically a two step algorithm utilizing 1-dimensional slice functions of the third order cumulants between two signal measurements, and is capable of suppressing the effect of correlated Gaussian measurement noises. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing TDOA/FDOA estimation algorithms from the viewpoint of computational burden and in the sense of mean squared error as well.

    We have developed a highly integrated liquid-crystal-on-silicon microdisplay for virtual reality applications. The silicon panel of 704 576 pixels was designed and fabricated by a custom 0.35 µm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology with emphasis on surface planarization. Topographic variation of less than 100 within the pixels was achieved. The pixel pitch was 9.6 µm, fill factor was 88% and display area was 0.36" in diagonal. Eight-bit digital data drivers and gamma-correction circuitry were integrated onto the silicon panel for true gray scale and full color representation. The display panel was assembled with a mixed twisted nematic and birefringence liquid crystal cell for high contract at CMOS compatible voltage. Chromatic characterization of the display using 3-color-in-1 light emitting diode (LED) as light source was performed. Contrast ratios on the pixel array were 95, 72 and 56, respectively, for red, green and blue colors at 3 V root-mean-squared voltage. In addition, a three-dimensional (3D) video stream in interlaced format was generated by a 3D modeling code for test and demonstration. Control logic was implemented to extract the left and right video frames and perform system timing synchronization. The silicon microdisplay was driven in frame inversion and by color sequence. With two sets of silicon microdisplays and eyepieces for each eye, we have demonstrated a 3D stereoscopic display based on the silicon microdisplay technology.

    Loop optimization plays an important role in compiler optimization and program transformation. Many sophisticated techniques such as loop-invariance code motion, loop restructuring and loop fusion have been developed. This paper introduces a novel technique called loop quasi-invariance code motion. It is a generalization of standard loop-invariance code motion, but based on loop quasi-invariance analysis. Loop quasi-invariance is similar to standard loop-invariance but allows for a finite number of iterations before computations in a loop become invariant. In this paper we define the notion of loop quasi-invariance, present an algorithm for statically computing the optimal unfolding length in While-programs and give a transformation method. Our method can increase the accuracy of program analyses and improve the efficiency of programs by making loops smaller and faster. Our technique is well-suited as supporting transformation in compilers, partial evaluators, and other program transformers.

    A low bit-rate encoding method which yields a good performance in edge reconstruction while achieving a high compression is proposed through MTF function and the spatial anisotropy of human vision. Human visual weighting factors applied to sub-blocks within each subband in wavelet domain are produced by the spatial anisotropic-filter, then a good perceptual performance can be obtained.

    In this paper, the improvement technique for a nonlinear parallel interference cancellation (PIC) receiver for a DS-CDMA system is studied, which cancels only the estimated multiple access interference (MAI) from specific users at each receiver stage. This technique was introduced as a PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in the proceeding of IEEE MILCOM '94, but the numerical results has not been fully provided with varying decision threshold. In this paper, the performance of the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision is shown in a Rayleigh fading channel. Also, a new PIC receiver with an adaptive decision threshold is proposed. In the proposed new PIC receiver, the decision threshold for partial cancellation is adjusted according to the statistic of its matched filter (MF) outputs. The BER of the proposed PIC receiver is obtained by simulation and compared with those of the conventional PIC receiver and the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in a Rayleigh fading channel. It is shown that the proposed PIC receiver achieves better performance than the conventional PIC receiver and the PIC receiver using null zone hard decision in a Rayleigh fading channel.
